ActuGaming has reported a Diablo 2 remaster
, titled
Diablo 2: Resurrected
, being worked on by Blizzard and fellow Activision studio Vicarious Visions. Details are scarce, although the internet is already rife with them, although the purported release date is scheduled for quarter 4 of this year. This would seem a very sudden release considering most titles, including
Warcraft 3: Reforged
, have been announced a year or more ahead of their release dates, although their source may have simply meant the intended announcement rather than actual release date.
AcuGaming went further to report that three mobile games were in development, as well as two expansions for WoW over the next three years. Mobile games shouldn't come as news to anyone, given what we were told at
BlizzCon 2018
and the
recent job listings
, while two Warcraft expansions is fairly par for the course, as
Shadowlands
is on the horizon and early outlining for the following expansion should at least be on the drawing board.
Vicarious Visions
is a studio that may not be very well known by Blizzard fans, but they've been a long time subsidiary of Activision working on numerous smaller titles, particularly porting projects developed on one platform over to another. They achieved more notoriety in 2017 by partnering with Bungie to port
Destiny 2
to PC, and again in 2018 for taking a more active role in developing the game's second expansion:
Warmind
, receiving a great deal of acclaim in the process.
Exactly the depth of their involvement with
Diablo 2: Resurrected
, presuming the project is real at all, remains to be seen. As a long time supporting studio responsible for porting projects, it would stand to reason that the remaster might have a console version similar to
Diablo 3
, but the positive response from Warmind showed their chops, so they may be taking a more principle role in development again. Again, no details regarding the depth of this supposed rerelease, whether it is meant to be a true to form remaster like
StarCraft
or a remake the way
WarCraft 3
was hyped as a "major overhaul", however ActuGaming did make a point of reporting that Blizzard was well aware of their failures in that regard.
