Former Lead Systems Designer Greg Street, aka
Ghostcrawler
, has shared another round of insights from the perspective of both a prior designer and that of a player returning to the game after many years. Now the Vice-President of IP and Entertainment at Riot games, he recently announced the companies intention of launching a
League of Legends MMO
, which may explain some of his renewed interest in World of Warcraft. Somewhat venerated by fans for his level of communication and engagement while working for Blizzard Entertainment, the game has changed considerably since that time, creating some interesting comparisons between the game mechanics of then and now. Today, he tweeted some thoughts after raid healing for the first time since
Mists of Pandaria
.
You can also check out his past commentary on leveling with Chromie Time, taking a
Paladin through Battle for Azeroth
, a
Warrior through Mists of Pandaria
, and the challenges of a former
player returning in Shadowlands
.
While certainly not considered an "expert" playing at the game's highest levels anymore, he raises good points that players often try to copy those playing at different levels than themselves, even when it's not fully appropriate to do so - such as his own point of view in playing with a group purposefully learning as they go, rather than extensively researching beforehand, the way most progression groups approach the game. Another is how short/more plentiful cooldowns are now, which has been a progressive change in the game over many years - at launch (and in Classic), most cooldowns were 5, 10, 30, or even 60 minutes long, while now they typically range from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. The final point is only a short mention about third party addons and custom UIs, but raises another very important point in that raids generally have a lot more mechanics now than they did in the past, necessitating more refinement to see and track the most important mechanics without being baited lesser ones.
