On the "ethics of baiting" thing... In real life systems, these things are considered pretty clearly exploitative of the other party - think lowball offers for wages and from pawn shops, extended to things like payday loans and blanket ToS arbitration agreements. It's a matter of values as to whether that exploitation is to the extent of needing a systemic intervention - so I imagine the discourse is going to simply mirror that debate over values, plus an added layer of debate over whether such an experience would be desirable game design. Certainly there are more players getting harmed (each in small amounts) than the number of players benefiting. But ultimately that first part probably makes this a debate far larger than a comment section.
