David Brevik has already made a terraria style game with a diablo type loot system. Game is pretty good imo and im assuming he has a very small crew. Now i dont think we'll see any WoW killers or games that will match up with Diablo because lets be real Activision-Blizzard just has way to big of a team and too much money BUT i think the new studios can make some very potentially FUN games that can scratch an itch. I think its safe to say they will prob be way more in touch with their fan base as well.
Hopefully they can find the holy grail for RTS, although it may already been achieved and its potential met. If anything I imagine it will be something between Warcraft III and Starcraft II, with heroes involved, but units as fragile as Starcraft II, to have the overall game more fast paced. Seeing Riot Games as an investor, I would not be surprised if Riot decides to expand their universe into the genre, as although Riot has game mechanics, they lack a deep story connecting everything. And it's just a matter of time until they get into MMOs. A monopoly in the gaming world and esports may be inevitable, and required to go main stream, and I would bet it's Riot is going to succeed. Blizzard is running it seems with 1 hand tied with greedy corporate people who don't understand the culture, and have no vision of creating a culture that will last. They approach it like a business. A product that they just want to sell.
... and in best case he will create reflex and apm based, wrist destroying strategy, dominated by asian players ;-)
Riot are also the main investor in Bonefire studio's too, which is lead by Rob Pardo. Screw Blizzard they have made one decent game in 10 years and thats hearthstone (and ofc they ruined that too). Most over rated game studio in the world.
Sweet, I love RTS games. It is a pity it won't have Blizzard properties, but hopefully it'll have the charm and the new IP will be interesting.
The thing is about RTS unless the game brings something new it is hard to beat nostalgia. Even if the new hypotethical RTS game is somehow objectively better that wont be enough to beat nostalgia.
Good luck!
Finally! This World needs new games like Warcraft/Starcraft/Dune/RedAlert e.t.c.
Will anything happen? Bonfire Studios was founded in 2016 and nothing has been shown
RTS and MOBAs are falling off, but aren't dead. It's honestly just a shame that a !@#$ re-skin of One Night Ultimate Werewolf/Town of Salem (Among Us) that takes 0 skill is dominating the market, when games that take skill and thought are dying off. Alas, instant gratification is overtaking pretty much every market.
Tencent trying to consume them LULW
Rts? Knew my skepticism was wellfounded. This is the third team of ex blizz employees. And they are closing a mostly dry dead genre to start their game. And its all in the plans. So we will have to wait years for them to make this game fail to get a big enough fan following and either cut their loses and quit there or try their hands at an mmo. Heck even a moba or a fighting game would be a better idea then an rts. I'm not a game designer but I was thinking about following blizzards Road map to wow, to hype the game but any traditional result wouldn't cut it. It would be too time consuming to waste on when other genres with a stable fan following could make for better options. Ah well. God speed to em whatever they do. Guess its back to Activision iron grasp for me.
You realise the average age of video gamers is above 30 right?
