The Eye of the Corruptor
In
Qualcosa nell'acqua
and
Terrori nell'abisso
during the
Javelins of Suramar
part of the questline, we're asked to deal with a gigantic zoatroid, the Eye of the Corruptor. Both quests explain its power is connected to N'Zoth, and we must not allow it to spread further corruption in Nazjatar, but as we approach the Eye of the Corruptor, we're bombarded with ominous whispers.
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. Listen. Listen. LISTEN.
Eye of the Corruptor: You were right to doubt them.
Eye of the Corruptor: The undrowned will join the chorus. Listen to it.
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. Open the gate. Step into the abyss. Complete the circle.
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. You know this is the truth. It is but one of a thousand. You have only to listen.
Eye of the Corruptor: Everywhere you look, the stars gaze back. You know their form already. You have but to listen.
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. She is a threat. Kill her. KILL HER.
Eye of the Corruptor: The queen threatens the king. There is no way to win. Listen.
Three Sisters
In the comic "Three Sisters," the Void menacingly whispers to Alleria, urging her to kill Sylvanas during their reunion.
This one is dangerous. She is a threat and must be ended. Beware this one, she seeks the death of all things...all possibilities. End her threat, murder her. Murder her, save yourself and murder her. Save the world and murder her.
She is a violation, she serves the true enemy. Kill her now kill her kill her now, remove her from this world and take from her what you need now now now.
This is nothing, you should have destroyed her. Now it is too late. You have sacrificed greatness for false feelings. They will leave you. You will watch as she claims them.
This echoes the Eye of the Corruptor urging us to kill a threatening woman:
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. Listen. Listen. LISTEN.
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. She is a threat. Kill her. KILL HER.
Should the Eye of the Corruptor also refer to Sylvanas, it means the Void sees Sylvanas and her mysterious endgame as a major threat to the plans of the Black Empire. The Void offers thousands of possibilities and half-truths, echoed in the Eye of the Corruptor's line:
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. You know this is the truth. It is but one of a thousand. You have only to listen.
In the short story "
A Thousand Years of War
," Alleria is exposed to the constant maddening whispers and perspectives the Void provides, including a vision in which she serves N'Zoth.
"The Light seeks one path and shuns all others as lies. The Shadow seeks every possible path and sees them all as truth."
More visions. Possible futures. She saw Xe'ra, the Mother of Light, declaring her a heretic and calling for her death. She saw her blood on Turalyon's sword. She saw Arator calling an army of paladins to hunt her down, only to fall with her arrows in his throat. She saw herself kneeling before the One Who Slumbers beneath Azeroth's waves. She saw herself killing it and taking its place, leading a throng of horrors to consume every nation.
While Alleria is not present in the Patch 8.2 story, she struggles in "Three Sisters" to keep the whispers of the Void in check, only triumphing due to the love for her son Arator. Should she lose that anchor, she may also lose control over the Void. In Crucible of Storms, N'Zoth has a whisper that could refer to Alleria reacting to the death of Arator:
Crucible of Storms: When the arrow finds its mark, the last fetter will fall away.
At the end of "Three Sisters," we learn Sylvanas' original plan was to kill Alleria and Vereesa, but she withholds signaling her Dark Rangers at the last moment. Should the Void have plans for Alleria, they would view Sylvanas' plan to master death and control her sisters as a threat to their vision of destruction.
Circle of Stars
Several whispers refer to the Circle of Stars, a riddle finally solved in the final phase of the Azshara fight.
Eye of the Corruptor: The undrowned will join the chorus. Listen to it.
Eye of the Corruptor: Listen. Open the gate. Step into the abyss. Complete the circle.
Eye of the Corruptor: Everywhere you look, the stars gaze back. You know their form already. You have but to listen.
As we've learned from the Azshara encounter, she welcomes us into the Eternal Palace and then uses our Azerite to weaken N'Zoth's prison. Because the Eye of the Corruptor is whispering to us before the raid opens, the player wouldn't know the full story behind the Circle of Stars. When we fight Azshara, she reveals the following:
Azshara: You see the truth now, don't you, heroes? Every move you've made has been according to my will.
Azshara: That lumbering dwarf believed you could save Azeroth by empowering your shiny little Heart. The gift of a sleeping titan.
Azshara: Yes, a titan's heart was exactly what was needed. Not to heal the world... but to shatter the prison of a god.
Azshara: The ritual nears completion. The Black Empire rises... and the world awaits its true queen.
The Circle of Stars has repeatedly come up in dialogue, beginning with Il'gynoth's whispers in the Emerald Nightmare and most recently within the Crucible of Storms:
N'Zoth: Receive now the greatest of all gifts. My dream has become your own. The circle of stars made flesh.
Uu'nat Description: When she struck her bargain with N'Zoth ten thousand years ago, Queen Azshara offered one of her most devoted followers into the Old God's service. Now Uu'nat and the crawling masses he commands herald the coming of their master, as foretold by the stars.
N'Zoth: She is not the last, but the first. Drown her and you will see.
Il'gynoth: To find him, drown yourself in the Circle of Stars.
Il'gynoth: Your coming was foretold in the rings. The long circle is nearly complete.
Xal'atath: This trifling skirmish is little more than a distraction. The true battle draws neigh as the circle nears completion.
With this additional context, the Eye of the Corruptor is urging us to fall into Azshara's trap in order to complete the Circle of Stars. While the mystery of the Circle of Stars is eventually solved, we're not sure how N'Zoth plans to usher in the Black Empire.
Queen vs King
Battle for Azeroth sets up several clashes between powerful rulers--the 8.0 conflict between Anduin and Sylvanas, as well as the
Warbringers: Azshara
deal between N'Zoth and Azshara. Should the Void hate Sylvanas, that could set up a final clash--N'Zoth vs Sylvanas. All of these fit the Eye of the Corruptor whisper:
Eye of the Corruptor: The queen threatens the king. There is no way to win. Listen.
While we speculated in earlier patches that
Azshara and N'Zoth may clash
, based on the tension present in
Warbringers
, this doesn't appear to be the case based on what we've gleaned from the Encounter Journal, as Azshara's seems determined to free N'Zoth from his prison. However, the players don't know Azshara's full plans at this point, and could easily view these whispers as encouragement to storm into the raid and defeat her. Perhaps that is the intention all along - manipulating players into confront Azshara under the guise of defeating her, wherein actuality they're bringing Azshara exactly what she needs to engineer N'Zoth's release.
It's plausible that the King refers to Anduin and the Queen to Sylvanas, as it seems that Sylvanas is always several steps ahead of everyone else, even in defeat. She sets a trap at Lordaeron when the Alliance has her cornered, welcomes the Zandalari into the Horde after the loss at Dazar'alor, and even anticipated Baine's escape in Patch 8.2. While the Alliance had an advantage going into 8.1.5 with their superior navy, the shipwrecks in Nazjatar have reduced that advantage as well. To those discouraged by Sylvanas' success, these whispers may encourage them to embrace the magic of the Void, gaining strength for upcoming battles.
However, the Old Gods are likely unconcerned with a small faction war, now that it's brought both sides to Nazjatar as Azshara planned all along. While Sylvanas' final plans are still unclear, ultimately these whispers may refer to a clash between Sylvanas and the Old Gods, which would explain why the whispers of the Void hate Sylvanas so much, viewing her as a serious threat to their own plans. Should the Old Gods try to usher in the Black Empire, which could involve reviving their fallen, Sylvanas also sharing an interest in the realm of death could greatly hamper those plans.
Another possible reading of this line is that Magni, the King of Diamonds, will have his plans to heal the world thwarted by Queen Azshara. This comes to pass, revealed at the end of the Azshara fight. It was Azshara's plan all along for us to empower our Heart of Azeroth and then travel to her palace, using the Azeroth to weaken N'Zoth's chains. Magni also recommended we retrieve the Pillars of Creation, and one of the Pillars, the Tidestone of Golganneth, is used by Azshara in 8.2 to part the sea.
