Venturing into the Maw
This questline is started after you pledge your allegiance to the Covenant of your Choice. Because only the Venthyr Covenant questline is available for testing on the Shadowlands Alpha, this post was made with the perspective of someone who has aligned themselves with the Venthyr Covenant. In the future, this questline might be slightly different for those who pledge themselves to other Covenants.
After we pledge ourselves to the Venthyr, we are sent to talk to Soul Warden Tenaval in
Souls to Save
. Tenaval then asks us to use our ability to enter and leave the Maw to recover souls in
Souls of the Damned
. We are provided with a tool called the Soulkeeper, which we will use to recover souls from the Maw.
After all the souls are recovered, we return to Tenaval in Sinfall and show him the souls we recovered in
Soul Salvation
. Tenaval then judges how useful these souls will be to our Covenant.
Tenaval: Hmm... these few have the dexterity to perform as artisans.
Tenaval: I sense the wisdom of architects in these three souls...
Tenaval: ... and the remaining three have the strength of spirit required to weave anima. Wonderful additions to our covenant, all nine!
As we turn in the quest to Tenaval, one of the rescued souls mention the saw someone else in the Maw with an energy similar to ours, and asks us to find the mysterious ally in the Maw in
A Familiar Energy
.
<The soul looks at you, curious.>
I saw someone else, in the Maw. He had the same... energy as you. Almost as if you were kin... no. Allies. Adventurers, bounds by shared acts of heroism.
That broker had him, in her refuge. You should seek him out.
The Ve'nari
As we return to the Maw, we find a place liked Ve'nari's Refuge, with a broker of similar name. Ve'nari tells us that she has one of our allies... she has Baine Bloodhoof! According to her, he didn't meet the Jailer's exact specifications, so she was able to take him in safely.
Ve'nari then mentions that a mortal in the Maw is a rather unique situation - Before that, the Mawsworn wouldn't bother chasing their enemies for long, so a presence of a being that is able to enter and leave the Maw in a whim is a new threat to both her and the Jailer. Ve'nari then offers an exchange - Her knowledge of the Maw for some of your labor. We gather reagents for Ve'nari in
Rule 1: Have an Escape Plan
.
Ve'nari: It is surprising what can you find lying around the Maw if you know where to look.
Ve'nari: Apparently this one didn't meet the Jailer's exacting specifications.
Ve'nari: No need to worry about his condition. He is content. And, you may leave here with him when our bargain is met.
---
Ve'nari: Rule 1: Always have an exit strategy. To ensure one's continued existence within the Maw, one must maintain a plan of escape at all times.
Ve'nari: I acknowledge the irony of me creating this rule despite my current inability to depart this place. You may laugh--briefly--without causing offense.
Ve'nari: Enough chuckling. Gather the stygia I require and return with haste. Your cypher awaits!
As you gather reagents for Ve'nari, your presence gathers the attention of the Jailer himself. The Jailer swears that there is nowhere you can go without him finding out, and in
The Eye of the Jailer
, you will start being affected by the Jailer's torments within the Maw. When you return to Ve'nari with the requested reagents, you will be able to purchase Cyphers of Relocation, an item that allows you to return to the Ve'nari's Refuge in safety.
Ve'nari then tells us to reinforce soul wards for her in
Rule 2: Keep a Low Profile
. During this quest, Ve'nari will explain what the Jailer can do to you if he notices you around the Maw.
Ve'nari: Rule 2: keep a low profile. The Maw is no place for theatrics. Get in, get what you want, and get out... while endeavoring to retain your limbs and other possessions.
Ve'nari: Now that he's noticed you, you're doomed. Anything you do in the Maw--anything of import, that is--will catch his attention. And attention is exactly what we DON'T want.
Ve'nari: First he'll turn the soulseekers on you. Then the towers. Then his kill squads. And after that... well, you don't want to know. Surgical and meticuous--that's how you stay alive.
Ve'nari: The good news is that you're safe here in my refuse. Not so out there. Remember, should a tragic fate befall you, some of that precious stygia might slip through your fingers.
Ve'nari: Fret not, mortal. A day at most away from his gaze, and the Jailer will turn his attention elsewhere. Then it will be safe for you to venture out again. To acquire stygia. For me.
In
Rule 3: Trust is Earned
, we're asked to go to the Tremaculum, another region of the Maw, and do some research on when souls are transferred there by the Mawsworn. After killing a Tower Inquisitor, you can then return to Ve'nari's Refuge using a Cypher of Relocation.
After our bargain is met with Ve'nari, she resurrects Baine Bloodhoof and allows us to return with him to Oribos in
Bloodhoof Resurrected
. With Baine with us, we go to the waystone and return with him to Oribos. Baine is very happy that he is back.
Ve'nari: Tread carefully when the Eye of the Jailer falls upon you, mortal. It would be frightfully inconvenient to lose a trading partner with such potential!
Ve'nari: You brought what I asked for, and now our bargain is complete. Recover your own and leave at once, before the Jailer sees through this veil.
Baine Bloodhoof: A pleasant dream... and I awaken in this hell once again.
Baine Bloodhoof: Is it possible to get out of here?
---
Baine Bloodhoof: It worked! Ha haaa! At long last, freedom!
The Next Frontier: Torghast
After Baine is brought safely to Oribos, we meet Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, who is certain that our allies that are still left in the Maw - Thrall, Jaina and Anduin - are being held prisoner in the Jailer's most dangerous fortress: Torghast, Tower of the Damned. We then return to the Maw in
Into Torghast
, and ask Ve'nari for a way to get to Torghast. Ve'nari is not very happy about this, but creates a portal to Torghast for us anyway.
Torghast? Why would anyone want to go there?
Then again, I suppose I am not one to question bravery so audacious it borders on idiocy, am I?
You will find a portal to Torghast in the back of my refuge.
As we enter the tower, Bolvar contacts us, and tells us to look into one of the many sections of the Tower,
Skoldus Hall
, and slay its warden.
As Warden Skoldus is defeated, we loot an object from him. We then return to Ve'nari, who tells us that the object is a key for a chamber within Torghast, and we will need to return there to find said chamber in
Prison of the Forgotten
. We enter Torghast once more, this time going into
The Fractured Chambers
and defeating its warden.
After Custodian Thonar is defeated, Bolvar contacts us once again, telling us he found out who is the soul imprisoned within Torghast: Jaina Proudmoore. We're sent to another portion of Torghast,
The Soulforges
, to find her. As we enter the Soulforges, Bolvar tells us that this is one of the more vile prisons created by the Jailer - Souls are burned down and processed as raw materials for the Jailer's twisted creations. As we approach the warden of the Soulforges, the Grand Malleare, we meet with Jaina, who mentions she has defeated the warden countless times, but remained imprisoned.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Enough already!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: How many times must I defeat you?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: No... this is another of your foul tricks, isn't it?!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: You torment me with a vision of one of Azeroth's greatest champions.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: And this portal... it must lead deeper into the death of my soul... but I must try. Again, I will try.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Wait. You're real, aren't you? <player>?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: With my magic, and your power to slip the Jailer's grasp, I might finally be able to leave this place!
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: This better not be one of your tricks, Zovaal.
After this, we return to oribos with Jaina. Jaina meets up with Baine, who is still recovering from his ordeal, and immediately wants to return and rescue Anduin and Thrall, but she is told by Bolvar to rest instead.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Baine! You're alive!
Baine Bloodhoof: Yes, but still recovering. This whole ordeal feels like a dream.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: What of the others? Still being tormented in the tower? We... we can save them...
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: No. Rest now, Lady Proudmoore. You've been through so much already.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: I suppose you're right.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Thank you, <player> I owe you... everything.
After this, Jaina has you return to Revendreth to fully empower your Soulkeeper in
Mortal Souls
. Tenaval reveres the energy within the Soulkeeper, mentioning that Jaina is a mage of the highest order, and tells us to return to Torghast, explore the
Coldheart Interstitia
and slay its warden.
Taunting the Jailer
Bolvar contacts us once again and finally locates Thrall, who is located in yet another portion of Torghast,
Mort'regar
. We once again progress through the floors there to find the warden. We managed to reach Thrall, but the Jailer pushes him away from us as we're breaking his chains.
Thrall: Stay back. They'll chain you up, too...
Thrall: Hurry, hero. Break those chains, before...
Thrall: NOOOOOOOOO!
Bolvar contacts us once more, telling us that although he can see Thrall, he doesn't see a clear path to him. He fears that we need to do the most dangerous thing we can: Purposefully return to the Maw and grab the Jailer's full attention to invoke one of his assassins.
In
Skeleton Key
, we need to explore the Maw, kill NPCs and complete world quests until the Jailer is aware enough of us to start sending assassins our way. You will need to get to Jailer threat rank 3 for Assassins to spawn.
After you loot the Skeleton Key from your assassin, you're then able to return to Torghast and complete the last unexplored section,
The Upper Reaches
. Bolvar mentions he's barely able to communicate with you in the Upper Reaches, with the communication cut to a complete halt by the warden's floor. The Jailer is there, watching you. After we kill the Arch-Suppressor keeping Thrall imprisoned, he gains enough force to stun the rest of his captors and free himself.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: Maw Walker? Have you lost your way? Where...
The Jailer: Do you like what you see? I look forward to welcoming you to my domain.
Thrall: No... I mustn't give up hope.
Thrall: AAAHHHHHHHH!
---
Thrall: It's... finally over.
Thrall: I'm ready to go home, <player>.
What the Future Holds
As we return into Oribos, we reconvene with all our saved allies. Thrall and Jaina talk about the horrors of the Maw, and Bolvar mentions that he may have pushed his peering into the Maw too far while you were in the Upper Reaches of Torghast. Because of this, he is unwilling to risk everything to search for Anduin at the current moment. You, the Maw Walker, will be the only working link between the living and The Maw.
For now, looks like the Alliance High King will remain lost in the Maw.
Baine Bloodhoof: Thrall. I am glad of your return.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: As am I.
Thrall: The things that I saw in that place, Jaina. The things I did...
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: ... are best not revisited. At least not now. Rest and recover.
Baine Bloodhoof: Bolvar. I have seen you peer into the Maw time and again, each time with greater clarity. Can you tell us now where Anduin is?
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: I am sorry, but I cannot.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: Every time I look into the Maw, I lower the veil - a veil which shrouds in two directions.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: I fear that in my last attempt, I may have pushed too far. I cannot risk another look, for the sake of all of us. For the sake of everything.
Baine Bloodhoof: Anduin...
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: For now, when it comes to the Maw, we must rely on...
Thrall: You.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore: You.
Baine Bloodhoof: You.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon: You.
