This week, Diablo 4 has seen its first major balance patch.
Patch 1.0.3
brought several class buffs, bug fixes, and, most importantly, massive changes to the Nightmare Dungeon system. Without going into numeric detail, Blizzard stated that experience gains both from running and completing a Nightmare dungeon have been increased - but by how much exactly? We took a good look at the new experience numbers and can say that the changes are absolutely massive!
Patch 1.0.3 Patch Notes Nightmare Dungeon Teleporting Now Enabled
Significantly increased the experience awarded for completing Nightmare Dungeons.
Significantly increased the experience gained from killing monsters in Nightmare Dungeons.
Players can now teleport to their Nightmare Dungeon directly through the map.
We've decided to test the changes with a Level 98 character because the patch was supposedly targeted at higher-level characters. Before the patch, players in their 80s and 90s had to spam normal dungeons at least up until Level 95 because it was the best way to level up quickly, especially in a group - even despite the bonus experience gained from higher-level monsters in Nightmare Dungeons.
Here are our preliminary results regarding the Nightmare dungeon experience changes introduced with Diablo 4's Patch 1.0.3.:
Regardless of dungeon size, the end-of-dungeon experience reward was at around 200k experience. With about 21M experience between Level 98 and 99, this is about 1% of a level.
Most Nightmare dungeons at Level 98 gave between 1.1 and 2.1 million experience per run in total.
Comparing both monster and end-of-dungeon experience, completing a Nightmare dungeon will give players between 10 and 20% of total dungeon experience.
After running 10 different Nightmare dungeons and
teleporting from dungeon to dungeon
, our experience average was between 250k and 300k per minute.
Based on this average, leveling up from Level 98 to 99 while exclusively running Nightmare dungeons should take between 70 to 85 minutes.
Prior to the patch, leveling from 96 to 97 and from 97 to 98 through Nightmare Dungeons took about double the time.
Looking at these results, the introduced Nightmare dungeon experience changes seem to have quite the impact on Diablo 4's gameplay loop. Spamming normal dungeons during early World Tier 3 and 4 progression might still hold a lot of value, especially in group settings, to increase your overall power level quickly. However, switching to running Nightmare Dungeons once you're feeling comfortable in World Tier 4 overworld and normal dungeon content could become your starting point to start diving into the freshly tuned Nightmare Dungeon system!
