this week's Diablo 4 Spiritborn gameplay reveal
, and, based on footage showcased by several sources
like Diablo content creator Rob2628
, we have unearthed several interesting clues and hints about Diablo 4's upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion.
Paragon and Skill Point Changes Coming in Vessel of Hatred? Spiritborn Interview with Rob2628
Just a day ago, we have
reported on the potential Paragon System and Skill Tree changes
coming with Vessel of Hatred. Today, we dug even deeper and found some interesting details about a potential new level cap, the possible return of Paragon levels, and maybe even a number squish coming with Diablo 4's first expansion.
Keep in mind that this is speculation based on information found in the Spiritborn playtest gameplay footage and Blizzard's recent Spiritborn Inside the Game video. Everything presented below is subject to change!
Level 60 New Level Cap and the Return of Paragon Levels?
Based on gameplay footage shown by multiple sources over the last few days, we have found the following information:
Just like in Diablo 3, the Paragon system in Vessel of Hatred seems to become a separate system once again, meaning that base levels and Paragon levels are two different things. In essence, we would have a regular level cap at 60 and a separate Paragon cap.
Right now, each regular level in Diablo 4 from Level 50 on rewards you with a total of 4 Paragon points, so 1 point each 25% of a level. We haven't found these 25% increments in Vessel of Hatred's user interface (normally indicated by four small diamonds in the experience bar). This could also indicate that Paragon levels are again tied to normal "level-ups" - like in Diablo 3.
The experience bar not showing Paragon increments isn't the only indicator regarding a potential level cap rework. In other playtest footage, the reworded Armor Cap tooltip on the character panel refers to Level 60. In the live game, this tooltip mentions "Monster Level 100 and beyond".
Another big hint could be the Alchemists and their reworked level increments for upgrading your Health Potions.
In the screenshot above, you can see a Level 56 Potion upgrade, which is the second-to-last potion upgrade in this list. In the live game, the second-to-last upgradable potion would be

, which has a Level 80 requirement. Essentially, the new Potion upgrade level increments seem to converge towards Level 60 instead of Level 100!
Much-Requested Number Squish Incoming?
It has to be said that Blizzard hasn't provided definitive information regarding a potential level cap increase, both
during BlizzCon last year
and also after the Spiritborn playtest last week. Looking at Blizzard's "game expansion" history not only in Diablo but also in franchises like World of Warcraft, a level cap increase or change has been one of the most common and also most promoted expansion features. However, if Blizzard would plan to introduce a more drastic system change together with a potential level cap change - like a number squish, for example -, then that would be a good reason to promote such a big rework of the game separately and closer to expansion launch.
A number squish in Diablo 4 has been a much-requested community feature. Many players
have been complaining about astronomical damage numbers
, for example.
We have noticed several clues regarding a potential number squish coming with Vessel of Hatred.
It seemed that damage done by Level 30 characters in the gameplay footage seemed fairly low - even despite suboptimal gearing on premade characters.
Another hint could have been unveiled with the showcase of one of the new Spiritborn Unique items coming with Vessel of Hatred.
Sepazontec, a Spiritborn Two-Handed Quarterstaff, has been shown with a damage value of 787 Damage Per Second. In the live game, two-handed weapons have 3,677 Damage Per Second. You might think that they have shown a low-level item during the Spiritborn showcase - however, all other stats align with the current Item Power 925 itemization.
