With Patch 7.1.5 just released, we're having Wowhead Mage Guide writer
Malon
analyze all of the Arcane, Fire, and Frost changes in the patch. Check out his updated
Arcane
,
Fire
, and
Frost
guides on Wowhead!
The updated spec guides on Wowhead also include an overview of what's changed in 7.1.5 and our Demon Hunter guide authors have also written a similar
in-depth post to 7.1.5 Havoc and Vengeance changes
.
Introduction
Patch 7.1.5 brings a variety of buffs and nerfs to the
Mage
class. Let's preface the article by restating one important fact:
Fire is not dead
. It has been brought down, while Arcane and Frost are stronger than they were in 7.1. When asking "What spec should I play in 7.1.5", the answer is simply, "Whichever one you have legendaries for."
So, what's changed?

Artifact Calc
Spirale gravitationnelle
– New legendary. Evocation gains one additional charge.
Summary: A powerful legendary. With the new
Surpuissance
and our tier set bonuses, could enable a constant burn playstyle (testing is needed). Overall: :D
Souhait ardent de Kil'jaeden
– New legendary. An on-use effect that causes a massive explosion around your target, on a relatively short cooldown.
Summary: Extremely powerful for AoE fights.
Kilt mystique du maître des runes
- Arcane Barrage grants you 3% of your maximum mana per
Charges arcaniques
spent.
Summary: A 25% nerf does hurt, but the item will still return a decent amount of mana. Rather than a regen tool, this now plays better with simply keeping our mana high. Received an indirect buff with the removal of Quickening in 7.1.5.
Couvre-bras d'assaut de Rhonin
-
Projectiles des Arcanes
has an 18% chance to make your next
Déflagration des Arcanes
cast within 6 sec cost no mana.
Summary: The amount of
Projectiles des Arcanes
procs we receive will increase with our two-piece tier set (
Item - Mage T19 Arcane 2P Bonus
), so Rhonin's was toned down to compensate. This remains our best single target legendary.
Secret de Sephuz
- Successfully applying a loss of control effect to an enemy, or interrupting, or dispelling any target, grants you 70% increased movement speed and 25% Haste for 10 sec. This effect may occur once every 30 sec.
Summary: A buff in that it can now be activated by
Contresort
or Spellsteal, but remains very encounter-specific. Weak.
Prydaz, chef-d'œuvre de Xavaric
- Every 30 sec, gain an absorb shield for 25% (15% if tank) of your maximum health for 30 sec.
Summary: As well as the change to increase its activation, the neck now has haste in addition to crit and mastery (although the mastery amount was lowered). A simple but welcome survivability buff.
Prescience de Norgannon
- New Effect: Standing still for 8 sec grants you Foresight, allowing you to cast while moving for 5 sec. (Old effect: Your instant cast spells have a chance to trigger Foresight, making your next non-instant cast spell castable while moving.)
Summary: Another welcome change, meaning no more reliance on Arcane Barrage to proc the effect. It is now much more controllable.
Déflagration des Arcanes
,
Projectiles des Arcanes
, Arcane Explosion, Arcane Barrage, Supernova,
Tempête du Néant
– Damage increased by 12%.
Orbe arcanique
– Scaling increased to 500% spell power.
Summary: Makes Orb a much more compelling choice for Mythic+ and AoE.
Mage Armor has been removed.
New Spell:
Barrière prismatique
Summary: A replacement for
Barrière de glace
, which also reduces magical damage taken and the duration of magical debuffs. Great stuff. However, it comes at the expense of the removal of Mage Armor, which used to perform a similar function.
Présence spirituelle
: now baseline
Summary: A small damage increase cooldown that can be woven into burst. Use the two instant
Déflagration des Arcanes
s at the end of
Pouvoir des Arcanes
, before Arcane Barrage.
Amplification
(new talent) has replaced
Présence spirituelle
.
Summary: A really solid pick, probably the best on this tier.
Cautérisation
and
Frimaire
have been removed and replaced with
Sillage
and
Bouclier de mana
Summary: The removal of
Cautérisation
is bad for raiding (it was excellent for progression), but
Sillage
will help to counter the loss of
Iceberg
. Unfortunately, it competes with
Chatoiement
.
Bouclier de mana
is not a strong choice when compared to these two talents.
Rune de puissance
nerfed to a 40% damage increase
Summary: A small but significant nerf, taking Rune down to a level more comparable to the other talents.
Flux de l’incantateur
is now competitive on movement-heavy fights (i.e. most of Nighthold).
Iceberg
replaced with
Translation temporelle
Summary: The tier 5 talent row was never a choice:
Iceberg
was clearly the best pick.
Translation temporelle
is now the same, but only because
Anneau de givre
and
Garde glaciale
are so uncompelling for raiding.
Magie instable
buffed to a 20% chance to activate
Summary: Makes
Magie instable
a competitive pick for two-to-four target fights. The talent row is now very clear-cut:
Erosion
for one-to-two targets,
Magie instable
for cleave and
Tempête du Néant
for AoE.
Surpuissance
redesigned to increase damage and lower mana costs by 70% while
Pouvoir des Arcanes
is active.
Summary: Will dramatically lengthen your burn phase; make sure that you are not at 100% mana before activating
Pouvoir des Arcanes
(to avoid capping mana). This is the new go-to talent.
Quickening removed and replaced with
Flux temporel
Summary: Completely changes the playstyle of Arcane at high levels to the more traditional ‘Burn and Conserve' that we have played with before.
Flux temporel
has potential but currently results in mana being drained very quickly, so is not recommended.
Bouclier de mana
renamed to Force Barrier. Now applies to
Barrière prismatique
, not
Barrière de glace
. Increases damage absorbed by up to 60%.
Summary: A very small nerf. Most people only pick this trait up towards the end of their artifact.
Tenue de parade de savoir semperardent
Two piece: Your spells have an additional 5% chance to activate
Projectiles des Arcanes
.
Summary: A solid, if boring, tier bonus
Four piece: Casting
Projectiles des Arcanes
reduces the remaining cooldown on Evocation by 2.0 sec.
Summary: An extremely strong bonus that plays well with the two piece. Enables more frequent burn phases, but de-syncs Evocation from
Pouvoir des Arcanes
(although this isn't an issue if taking
Surpuissance
).
The number of
Projectiles des Arcanes
procs and lower Evocation cooldown from our tier gear, plus
Surpuissance
, combine to keep mana high in this patch, which devalues mastery.
The patch 7.1.5 stat priority is (very broadly): Mastery > Versatility = Critical Strike > Haste.
Taking specific talents and gear (as above) changes this priority.
Magie instable
likes crit;
Erosion
and
Tempête du Néant
like haste; but
Flux temporel
plays badly with haste gear. The value of haste rises with tier gear,
Surpuissance
and
Spirale gravitationnelle
, however. It is best to run your character through SimCraft for yourself.
Arcane is in a great spot for 7.1.5. The new
Surpuissance
,
Spirale gravitationnelle
legendary and tier bonuses increase the value of haste and enable a much more aggressive playstyle with regards to the burn phase.
Quickening's removal somewhat simplifies the playstyle and may bring new players to the spec, so I'll direct them to the
Arcane Mage guide
.

Brûle-pourpoings
– New legendary.
Flammes de phénix
reduces the remaining cooldown on
Combustion
by 6 sec.
Summary: Although damage has been moved out of
Combustion
in this patch, this is still a strong legendary (although not the best).
Souhait ardent de Kil'jaeden
– New legendary. An on-use effect that causes a massive explosion around your target, on a relatively short cooldown.
Summary: Extremely powerful for AoE fights.
Banderoles du roi-soleil
– After consuming Hot Streak, there is a 15% chance that your next non-instant
Explosion pyrotechnique
cast within 15 sec deals 300% additional damage.
Summary: A small lowering to the proc chance is compensated for by a 15% buff to
Explosion pyrotechnique
's damage. However, the loss of
Iceberg
makes hard-casting
Explosion pyrotechnique
more difficult.
Toucher brûlant de Koralon
–
Brûlure
deals 350% increased damage and is a guaranteed Critical Strike against enemies below 30% health.
Summary: Significant buffs have made this legendary much more useful. However, remember that none of our damage-increasing artifact traits interact with
Brûlure
.
Secret de Sephuz
- Successfully applying a loss of control effect to an enemy, or interrupting or dispelling any target, grants you 70% increased movement speed and 25% Haste for 10 sec.
Summary: Another welcome change, meaning no more reliance on instant spells to proc the effect. It is now much more controllable.
Fireball,
Explosion pyrotechnique
,
Brûlure
,
Trait de feu
,
Flammes de phénix
,
Souffle du dragon
,
Choc de flammes
,
Vague explosive
,
Tempête de cendres
,
Météore
,
Bombe vivante
– Damage increased by 15%.
Molten Armor has been removed.
New Spell:
Barrière flamboyante
Summary: A replacement for
Barrière de glace
, which also reduces physical damage taken.
Cautérisation
is now baseline for Fire.
Summary: Cauterize is a great ability for progression raiding, and now we aren't forced to choose between it and
Chatoiement
.
Combustion
now increases mastery by 50% of our critical strike, down from 100%.
Summary: A change aimed at smoothing our damage dealt, moving it away from cooldowns. Make no mistake, this is a nerf, but it is partly balanced by other changes.
Masse critique
now grants a flat 15% increase to our critical strike chance, as well as the 10% increase to critical strike rating.
Summary: A crit buff is never bad for Fire, especially with the changes to crit scaling in 7.1.5.
Boute-flammes
now affects
Explosion pyrotechnique
as well as Fireball, but only applies to enemies above 90% health.
Summary: Mostly useful for Mythic+ dungeons and PvP; there are no raid fights where killing adds is such a high priority that this is worth taking.
Cautérisation
and
Frimaire
have been replaced with
Vague explosive
and
Ame flamboyante
.
Summary:
Chatoiement
is still the clear winner in this tier.
Vague explosive
has changed to be a crowd control spell, while
Ame flamboyante
is focused on melee range.
Rune de puissance
nerfed to a 40% damage increase
Summary: A small but significant nerf, taking Rune down to a level more comparable to the other talents.
Flux de l’incantateur
is now competitive on movement-heavy fights (i.e. most of Nighthold).
Vague explosive
replaced by
Fureur d'Alexstrasza
on tier 4.
Summary: Makes
Souffle du dragon
even stronger for AoE, but
Enflammé
is still superior.
Enflammé
is now a passive that increases
Trait de feu
charges by one and lowers the cooldown by two seconds.
Summary: Still the go-to talent. You will (almost) always have a
Trait de feu
when needed, and still get the same number of
Trait de feu
casts during
Combustion
.
Brûlure contrôlée
buffed to 20%, from 10%.
Summary: Now more competitive on AoE fights, if you don't have
Diadème de feu draconique de Darckli
.
Iceberg
replaced with
Vitesse frénétique
Summary: Like
Translation temporelle
for Arcane,
Vitesse frénétique
is the best choice on this tier, but only because of the weakness of
Anneau de givre
and
Garde glaciale
. The removal of
Iceberg
turns
Brûlure
into our default movement spell.
Gerbe de flammes
increased from 25% to 30%
Summary:
Gerbe de flammes
is now the strongest spell on this row for AoE up to five or six targets (Mythic+ dungeons are a specialty!). Flame Patch received a 17% nerf in a hotfix, but still fills its intended niche.
Météore
's scaling buffed to 1,100% spellpower (from 562.5%) and
Tempête de cendres
buffed to 65% (from 58%).
Summary:
Météore
now appears to be the best single-target ability, and
Tempête de cendres
for cleave and AoE.
Petit bois
was indirectly nerfed due to the nerf of
Combustion
and reduced crit rate on Fireball.
Incantation pyrétique
nerfed from a 5% crit damage increase to 2% per stack.
Summary: Another nerf taking damage out of
Combustion
.
Peau de magma
now applies to
Barrière flamboyante
, not
Barrière de glace
. Reduces physical damage taken by up to 15%.
Summary: A very small nerf. Most people only pick this trait up towards the end of their artifact.
Tenue de parade de savoir semperardent
Two piece:
Pyrotechnie
provides an additional 20% critical strike chance from each application.
Summary: 30% more crit for every non-crit your deal will significantly increase the rate at which you are throwing
Explosion pyrotechnique
s.
Four piece: Hot Streak has a 10% chance to also grant you 20% haste for 10 sec.
Summary: Haste is much more desirable for Fire after 7.1.5, due to damage being moved out of
Combustion
and back into hard-cast spells like Fireball. A very strong set bonus that plays well with the
Banderoles du roi-soleil
.
The patch 7.1.5 stat priority is (very broadly): Crit > Mastery > Haste > Versatility.
Haste has risen in value for Fire with the changes to
Combustion
; however, crit is still king.
Fire is far from dead, but without spec-specific legendaries it is likely to be out-damaged by Arcane (and possibly Frost) on a single target. However, AoE damage remains very high.

Ere glaciaire
– New legendary. Your
Orbe gelé
explodes at the end of its trail, dealing 600% spellpower damage.
Summary: Very powerful in all situations, especially AoE. Ties in well with the new
Blizzard
.
Souhait ardent de Kil'jaeden
– New legendary. An on-use effect that causes a massive explosion around your target, on a relatively short cooldown.
Summary: Extremely powerful for AoE fights.
Secret de Sephuz
- Successfully applying a loss of control effect to an enemy, or interrupting, or dispelling any target, grants you 70% increased movement speed and 25% Haste for 10 sec. This effect may occur once every 30 sec.

Éclair de givre

Éclair d’ébène
,
Rafale
,
Javelot de glace
,
Nova de glace
, Waterbolt,
Jaillissement d’eau
,
Tempête de comètes
,
Cône de froid
,
Blizzard
and
Orbe gelé
– Damage increased by 12%.
Frost Armor has been removed.
Barrière de glace
causes melee attackers to be slowed by 50%.
Frimaire
has been redesigned and is now baseline for Frost.
Summary: Still gives you two uses of
Bloc de glace
, but can now also reset the cooldown of other defensives – and
Cône de froid
, if you're desperate for AoE damage.
Blizzard
no longer activates
Doigts de givre
, but reduces the cooldown of
Orbe gelé
by 0.5 seconds per target hit, each time it deals damage.
Summary: A massive buff to Frost's AoE damage, especially if using Frost Bomb (due to the increased
Doigts de givre
procs from all those
Orbe gelé
s).
Cautérisation
and
Frimaire
have been replaced with
Iceberg
and Glacial Insulation.
Summary:
Chatoiement
now competes with
Iceberg
, making this tier an extremely difficult choice. Take
Chatoiement
for long-distance movement,
Iceberg
if just nudging yourself out of a fire patch. Glacial Insulation is a very niche pick and cannot compete with the other talents in most situations.
Rayon de givre
buffed by 12%.
Rune de puissance
nerfed to a 40% damage increase
Summary: A small but significant nerf, taking Rune down to a level more comparable to the other talents.
Flux de l’incantateur
is now competitive on movement-heavy fights (i.e. most of Nighthold).
Toucher gelé
is now a passive that increases
Doigts de givre
proc chance by 40%.
Summary: Less control than previously, but results in more reliable
Doigts de givre
generation (an indirect movement buff). The choice comes down to this or
Bris de glace
on this tier.
Vents algides
has replaced
Iceberg
on tier 5.
Summary: An almost useless tier for raiding, which is a shame; Fire and Arcane at least got movement speed buffs when
Iceberg
was removed.
Vents algides
is still probably the best talent, for add control, but is very lacklustre for raiding.
Réaction en chaîne
now increases the damage of Ice Lance by 10% per stack (was 20%).
Summary: Still a very good trait, but it's never nice to be nerfed.
Bouclier d’Alodi
now increases
Barrière de glace
size by up to 60% (was 100%).
Summary: A minor nerf.
Tenue de parade de savoir semperardent
Two piece: Frost Bolt has a 10% increased chance to trigger
Gel mental
.
Summary: Like most early tier gear, this is a solid, if boring, bonus.
Four piece:
Orbe gelé
has an additional 5% chance to trigger
Doigts de givre
when it deals damage.
Summary: Obviously plays into our AoE with the new
Blizzard
and Frost Bomb; also indirectly buffs mobility. Not as flashy as Arcane or Fire bonuses, though.
The patch 7.1.5 single target stat priority is (very broadly): Critical Strike (to 33.34%) > Haste > Versatility > Mastery > Critical Strike.
For multiple targets, haste gained a great deal of value with the
Blizzard
change. The stat priority is now Haste > Critical Strike > Versatility > Mastery.
Frost was already in a good spot mechanically, which was evident in the fact that this patch was mostly number tuning. AoE damage, which was a weakness in patch 7.1, has received a very welcome buff with the new
Blizzard
, and mobility is also unaffected – unlike Fire and Arcane. Overall, we should be positive about the spec going into Nighthold.
The spec is currently simming ahead of Fire and Arcane, but that is due to
Vide thermique
, which is difficult to play well. Be aware of that when deciding what to play in 7.1.5.
