The relationship between gnome Sapphronetta Flivvers and goblin Grizzek Fizzwrench was a cute side-plot in the BFA novel
Before the Storm
as well as fun questline in Patch 8.1.5. Now, Author Christie Golden has shared on Twitter what was originally intended for these characters at the end of the novel, which was later changed!
@KateMakesStuff, the Senior Game Designer who created their 8.1.5 questline, also shared her enthusiasm for the two characters:
The two characters were originally intended to die in the explosion at the end of the novel, but as the book was so dark and the characters were so endearing, this was changed to end on an ambiguous open note. We then get in-game confirmation they both survived in a
Patch 8.1.5 quest
which rewarded their pet
Plumas
.
While the couple was in hiding for the early part of BFA, in Patch 8.2 they're back in a big way
helping the player reach Mechagon
. Later in Mechagon, Grizzek is helping making an action figure (
Mini-Azeroth: Sapphronetta
) for Sapphronetta (
Mi calabacita en figura de acción
).
As we learned from the
Shadows Rising
interview with Madeleine Roux
, Blizzard provides the authors with many constraints and requirements for tie-in books, so there's usually not much flexibility to deviate from the outlined plot. With this context, it's even more notable that these two characters marked for death not only survived, but became the focus of a special questline!
Sapphronetta Flivvers and Grizzek Fizzwrench in
Before the Storm
Sapphronetta Flivvers and Grizzek Fizzwrench are side-characters in the book
Before the Storm
. Previously a couple, they were separated by the beginning of the book, claiming they were irritated by each other. After divorcing Grizzek, Saffy joined the Explorer's League as a consultant, and was sent to Silithus to help with the Azerite gathering mission.
During Saffy's time in Silithus, she befriended the sentinel Cordressa Briarbow, close friend to Delaryn Summermoon. During one night, Saffy was kidnapped by goblins, who had direct orders to capture the gnome. Saffy defended herself but was eventually knocked out, waking up while riding a wyvern towards Tanaris, accompanied by her ex-husband, Grizzek. She was against everything the goblin stood for, until Grizzek offered the gnome a piece of Azerite, and her mind opened up to the possibilities of creations they could devise using the mineral.
Saffy and Grizzek spent weeks working on Azerite inventions for Gallywix, and rekindled their relationship during that time. Eventually, they were told to only create weapons with the Azerite they were provided, a decision that devastated the couple, as they did not want to create inventions that would be used to deliberately harm others.
The unlikely couple devised a plan to escape Gallywix: They would set a bomb at their laboratory and use the distraction to escape into a tunnel in Tanaris. While escaping, Grizzek proposed to Saffy once more, who accepted. After making to the tunnel, however, they were captured by Gallywix's forces, who set up the bomb between the couple after tying them up.
Saffy and Grizzek managed to make the bomb drop to the ground between them, but when they attempted to escape the bomb's explosion, their small legs could only take the couple so far. While escaping, Grizzek lamented that Gallywix would use their inventions to hurt others after all, but Saffy mentioned their notes were destroyed, so the Goblin leader could not use it to cause harm to others. Their participation in the book ended as the bomb went off, leaving on a cliffhanger on whether the couple survived or not.
