Unlocking Rank 3 Essences in The Eternal Palace and the Impact on Raid Progression

With the weekly reset, Mythic raiders will be able to complete rank 3 of the raid essence, which requires a total of 63

(9 for Rank 1, 18 for Rank 2, and 36 for Rank 3). Because the currency only drops from Radiance of Azshara, The Queen's Court, and Queen Azshara herself within The Eternal Palace; to achieve the amount required in two weeks, players must have defeated Mythic Radiance at least once and cleared Heroic difficulty both weeks. In this article, we're taking a look at the impact of each rank 3 raid essence, and how they might impact raid progression through The Eternal Palace.

This damage inflation is very important as it acts as something of a soft-nerf for The Eternal Palace, particularly on difficult DPS checks such as
Lady Ashvane
, which is currently blocking several guilds from progressing. Similarly, the large power gain is likely a major factor in the decision to re-clear rather than extend for the guilds currently racing to World First.
This is compounded by the fact that gear progression is more shallow this tier due to the influence of
Benthic
Gear. Because many DPS value these items and their easy access to sockets over raid drops despite their relatively low item level, there isn't much room for progression in those slots. The majority of damage inflation this tier comes from weapons, azerite, trinkets, and unlocking new essences, with the next big jump coming with the third essence slot at Heart level 65.
Damage is frequently the most important part of progression raiding; tanks are typically only geared enough to keep them alive, rarely does a group take more than the bare minimum of healers required to keep the raid alive, and it's not uncommon for progression oriented groups to choose tanks and healers based on who can provide the most damage in addition to their other duties. Damage dealers are typically geared first, in order to beat important DPS checks and get through encounters quicker. With nearly every DPS spec gaining 3-5% damage, those hard checks and damage requirements should be considerably easier with this unlock.

highlights a common tanking issue: Additional tanking cooldowns, particularly short duration ones meant to counter spike damage are only really useful when there's a need for them, a need that steadily drops over time. Each additional cooldown, trinket, essence or other tool actually devalues every other, and as a raid becomes more geared, tank survivability becomes less of an issue; tanks gain greater mitigation, DPS push phases faster and reduces total encounter time, and healers have an easier time keeping everyone topped off.
Undying Gift is a good example of this. As a purely defensive tool, you would only take it if you needed it to counter a predictable burst of damage in an encounter, such as

, and most tanking specializations typically have enough cooldowns to cover those situations anyway, as well as external cooldowns from other classes.
That said, rank 3 does make the essence significantly better, to the point where you may actively look for places to use it. Damage is often a more important consideration in early progression, so the majority of raid tanks are using

, but with Rank 3 Condensed Life-Force increasing raid damage, the burden on tanks and healers maximizing it is lessened, which may allow new strategies to develop in order to reduce the dependency on outside cooldowns or increase the viability of weaker tanking specializations.

is one of the weaker healing essences, and seldom prioritized by raid healers. Where most essences provide a significant healing throughput increase, Vitality Conduit instead redistributes healing rather than increasing it, effectively acting as a single target Spirit Link Totem. In a hypothetical encounter which had a high damage single target debuff every minute, you could use this essence to smooth out that damage, but not much better than simply healing the player directly. Outside of that hypothetical situation, it generally isn't worth taking, as the opportunity cost over using one of the other prominent healing essences is simply too great to warrant its use.
