Fire Mage received no real changes specifically to its core gameplay. The majority of the changes come in the form of the removal, replacement, and shifting around of the current talent tree.
Core Changes
Although not a “Fire” change, the decision to make non-player effects, such as Trinkets, no longer buffed by player skills is a significant change for Fire.

) no longer can be used to enhance the effect of on use trinkets such as the
Signalfeuer des Terminus
. As Fire leveraged the ability to buff trinkets more than many other specs, this is a big change that will see these kinds of on-use trinkets lose value relative to how they were seen in Legion.
Like the other two specs, the defensive shield
Lodernde Barriere
is now based off a percentage of your maximum Hit Points instead of a percentage of your Spell Power. This overall should be a buff to the ability. The additional effect of damaging enemies that melee attack you while the shield is up remains the same.
Flammenstoß
now slows by 20% instead of 50% for 8 seconds. How impactful this will be on the overall strength of Fire is unknown, but if the current Mythic+ dungeon meta of requiring heavy kiting continues then this is a substantial nerf.
As with Frost and Arcane, Fire also got the new
Arkane Intelligenz
and
Fluch aufheben
spells (re)added to its kit.
Talent Changes
Level 15
Here
Großbrand
has been moved onto another tier, and in its place
Brennende Berührung
added.
Brennende Berührung
is a copy of the current belt legendary item
Koralons brennende Berührung
. It provides Fire with the option to talent into a high mobility execute phase through empowering
Versengen
. With the removal of
Großbrand
, the talent row is now clearly focused on providing single target damage throughput, with both
Feuerteufel
and
Brennende Berührung
being competitive options.
Level 30
Minimal change occured on this row.
Lodernde Seele
now gives you a free cast of
Lodernde Barriere
when you cast
Blinzeln
instead of letting damage dealt to nearby enemies restore the barrier.
Flimmern
and
Druckwelle
remain functionally identical to their Legion iterations, although
Flimmern
did see a nerf with its recharge time being changed from 15s to 20s.
Level 45
This entire row remains identical to how it is in Legion. Performance wise,
Spiegelbild
is still lagging behind, while
Rune der Kraft
and
Fluss des Beschwörers
provide roughly the same throughput with
Rune der Kraft
eeking slightly ahead of
Fluss des Beschwörers
.
Level 60
Here Controlled Burn has been entirely removed from the talent tree and replaced by
Phönixflammen
, the Artifact ability Fire Mages had access to in Legion. While this is an improvement, as Controlled Burn underperformed most of Legion and overlaps with
Pyromane
in effect, this does have a knock-on effect of changing how Fire approaches
Einäschern
. It will no longer be possible to have both
Flammeninferno
, providing an additional
Feuerschlag
charge, and
Phönixflammen
at the same time. This changes the number of
Pyroschlag
generating instant cast spells that can be fit into
Einäschern
, and results in a weaker
Einäschern
phase. With current tuning however,
Phönixflammen
is not relevant.
Flammeninferno
dominates at lower target counts and
Alexstraszas Zorn
takes over for mass AoE situations.
Level 75
The same utility row that existed in Legion still exists in Battle for Azeroth with no substantial changes.
Level 90
Großbrand
was moved from the level 15 tier onto this tier and replaced Unstable Magic. Both
Lebende Bombe
and
Flammenfeld
remain the same as their Legion versions. The dynamic between
Lebende Bombe
and
Flammenfeld
has not changed from Legion, and
Großbrand
fills the same passive single target role that Unstable Magic filled - while being a more “flavorful” talent in doing so.
Level 100
Cinderstorm has been removed from this row and replaced with
Pyroklasmus
. Similar to
Brennende Berührung
,
Pyroklasmus
copies a current legendary effect - the
Unvergleichliche Bindungen des Sonnenkönigs
’s
Pyroschlag
empowerment proc. The tuning of this row is similar to the Level 60 row - the obvious single target option is
Pyroklasmus
, and
Meteor
takes over on sustained AoE.

is not competitive with the other two options at the moment.
Azerite Traits
Azerite traits are the new “cool” thing this time around in Battle for Azeroth. So far, all but two of the Azerite traits for Fire have no impact on the spec’s gameplan. The Azerite trait
Vorheizen
(not to be confused with our co-contributor) triggers a debuff on the target when
Versengen
is cast, therefore requiring occasional
Versengen
weaving into the rotation. While very minor, it is nice to see some attempt to add variety into the rotation through these traits. Unfortunately, the other trait which impacts the rotation does so in a negative way. The problem with
Doppeleinäscherung
is that it causes you to waste
Feuerschlag
casts. The point of
Feuerschlag
being off the GCD is that you can instantly react to Heating Up state and convert to
Kampfeshitze
. If you get a Heating Up proc, you
Feuerschlag
- the random nature of that 2nd
Feuerball
means if you didn’t recognize some proc that has no real effect in the very short window it has between the first
Feuerball
, you wasted that
Feuerschlag
cast. So you always have a chance to get the extra proc - but it’s always competing against your need to
Feuerschlag
to convert quickly.
In Summary
Not much has changed for Fire, but the few changes it did get to the talent tree are positive ones. Repetitive, bland, or underused talents have all been replaced with more interesting options that draw inspiration from the best legendary effects Fire had in Legion. If you enjoyed Fire in Legion, odds are you will continue to do so in Battle for Azeroth. The only thing remaining to be seen is how the unrevealed Azerite traits will impact the spec over the course of the expansion.
