Mythic Assault of the Za'qali has been defeated in 30 seconds by using some clever use of game mechanics and benefitting from Augmentation Evokers multiplicative stacking.

Augmentation Evoker Stacking is a Problem
As mentioned in our
previous article with 22 Augmentation Evokers
, Augmentation Evoker has a massive problem with stacking.
Each additional Augmentation Evoker (who buffs the same targets) increases the value of all other Augmentation Evokers
Blizzard initially band-aided the fix by capping the number of buffs at 4 per player. In addition, there are some major positional complications with choosing your Ebon Might targets since you typically can only guarantee 2 of the Ebon Mights go on the targets that you wish.
However, this solution was clearly only a band-aid as players have found a way to work around the problem.
Multiplicative Scaling
As
mentioned previously
, stacking Augmentation Evokers is a problem because each Augmentation Evoker scales multiplicatively when you add more Evokers. We talked with our class writer Jereico:
Each Evokers buffs 5 different factors on two targets:
Intellect:

Each buff stacks additively individually but when you combine them all, they scale multiplicatively for explosive results!
Each factor scales multiplicatively with each other when stacked on the same target.
Each Evoker is adding more Intellect to their targets which is getting multiplied by more Versatility which is being multiplied by more Crit (and guaranteeing a Crit eventually), which is being all being fed back through more

procs from each Evoker. All of this is then multiplied through

during the burst window.
Essentially, this is leading to a quintic function -- not quadratic, not cubic, but x to the power of 5. In other words, at low counts of Augmentation Evokers, everything is probably fine, but start stacking them and things get out of hand real quick.
Positioning Requirements
The previous explanation only included 2 targets, the targets that you would typically only be able to guarantee using

. However,
Colour-Stormreaver (EU)
, has found a way around that leading to even more multiplicative results!
They used:
A stack spot for the 4 buffed targets.
4 Augmentation Evokers positioned 100 yards away from each other, but within 100 yards of the stack spot.
The entire raid > 100 yards away from the stack spot and all Augmentation Evokers, with a summon pending to teleport in before combat starts.
By having this positioning, the Augmentation Evokers can safely buff all 4 of the same players, without buffing another Augmentation Evoker or another player in the raid as there are only exactly 4 other players in range.
This "ritual circle" positioning will not be practical the majority of the time. However, the results are massive when you can pull this off without any changes. If a boss in the next raid tier has a massive damage window, you might see top guilds actually try to force this mid encounter to reap the rewards.
Conclusion
If the multiplicative scaling of stacking Augmentation Evokers doesn't get changed, expect the optimal number of Augmentation Evokers to be either
exactly zero or exactly four
in the next tier from a DPS perspective.
As each additional Augmentation Evoker adds to the value of previous Augmentation Evokers, if something is better than the 4th Augmentation Evoker, then they must be better than the 1st Augmentation Evoker, so you would just bring that other thing 4 times instead.
Multiplicative scaling of Augmentation Evokers continues to be a problem and it's clear that the hotfix of capping it at 4 buffs can be exploited. It will be impossible to tune for both the high-end and low-end of Augmentation Evoker in this state when the balance of a spec is determined by how many others of that spec are in the raid. Imagine if your Fire Mage DPS increased based on the number of other Fire Mages in your raid, or any other spec.
Hopefully Blizzard has plans to adjust some of Augmentation Evokers outliers or else the next tier might be quite interesting and the "ritual circle" might become more than a fun meme during farm.
Raid Buff Targets
This does lead to mention another problem with Augmentation Evoker -- the inability to just buff the targets it wants to. Unlike Mythic+, where Augmentation Evoker just hits everyone, the amount of hoops that Augmentation Evoker has to jump through in order to buff the targets that you want in raid is very frustrating and I hope that some changes come for this in the near future.
