With one week before the Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch, we're doing roundup of all the information leading up to World of Warcraft's first Classic expansion. While the expansion itself is free and only requires a regular World of Warcraft subscription to play, Blizzard has added a number of premium options offering various toys, mounts, character level boosts, and the ability to clone characters for use on permanent Classic Era servers as well as Burning Crusade ones.
Burning Crusade Classic Beta Test
A
large wave beta test
will be conducted at 11 a.m. PDT on Wednesday, May 12th. With character copies and all zones and instances available on the "Launch Test" server, players will be free to test most TBC launch content in an attempt to ensure a smooth expansion launch process.
Burning Crusade Classic Launch
The Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch begins on May 18th, with the
full expansion release on June 1st
, giving players two weeks to prepare to go to Outland. During this time, players will be prompted to make an individual decision for each of their characters: choosing whether they will remain in the Patch 1.13 Classic Era, move onto the Burning Crusade expansion, or do both by using the Character Cloning service.
The expansion will launch simultaneously around the world, so check the map below to find your time zone.
Optional Premium Features
Like Classic, the expansion is
free
with a normal World of Warcraft subscription, however Blizzard has added a handful of premium features similar to those found in the modern WoW expansions, including cosmetics, toys, mounts, and character level boost services. These are all completely optional, and in no way required to play The Burning Crusade Classic.
TBC Deluxe Edition
While the Burning Crusade expansion is free, Blizzard will be offering a
TBC Deluxe Edition
for $69.99 May 18th. Similar to other expansions, the deluxe upgrade includes as number of cosmetic toys, mounts, game time, and a character boost with a combined value much higher than the actual price tag.
30 days game time
A Dark Portal Pass character boost
The Path of Illidan toy
A Dark Portal Hearthstone
The Reawakened Phase-Hunter mount for use in Burning Crusade Classic
The Viridian Phase-Hunter mount for use in modern WoW (Shadowlands)
The TBC Reawakened Phase-Hunter mount and Shadowlands Viridian Phase-Hunter mount, respectively.
Dark Portal Pass
The
Dark Portal Pass
, obtainable with the Deluxe Edition or as a standalone purchase of $39.99 is a
once per account
option to boost a character to level 58, setting them up for the new expansion content. While the boost is useable as soon as the pre-patch begins on May 18th, it can also be saved for later use, although it is not useable with the new Blood Elf or Draenei races. Along with the level increase, it grants players a handful of perks to prepare them to go into the expansion, although savvy players can use the two week pre-patch to further prepare their characters.
Apprentice Riding skill
A race-specific mount
Access to some flight paths
Weapon skills up to level 58
Level 58 green magic quality gear
Up to four 14 slot Runecloth Bags
Some amount of gold
Classic Era Character Cloning
When the pre-patch goes live on May 18th, the game will be split into two versions: Classic Era realms which never progress beyond patch 1.13 and The Burning Crusade which moves into the new expansion content. Each version will be logged in separately from the battle.net launcher, and the character select screen will prompt players to choose which version they wish to lock their characters to. This choice will be made separately for each character, but players who wish to do
both
in order to retain the same character on Classic Era realms while also taking them into TBC, will have the option of using the
character cloning service
for $35. Similar to using a boost, this creates a second version of the character, so that it may be used in both expansions separately while retaining all of its items, gear, skills, and so on.
Each character must choose to stay in the Classic Era or move forward to the Burning Crusade expansion, while Character Cloning allows them to do both!
This is
only necessary if you wish to play the same character on both Classic Era and Burning Crusade Realms at the same time
. It is not needed for characters only staying in the Classic Era or characters only moving forward into TBC as normal. More information can be found in the
Blizzard blog
, which details how snapshotting character information will work to avoid duplicating gold and items.
