Who is Xal'atath?
As with every other artifact weapon in Legion, Xal'atath, or Xal, received and absorbed a lot of power from many different sources, leading up to absorbing the corruption of Sargeras' Sword itself at the end of Legion. Which for most Artifact Weapons, the surges of power weren't exactly dangerous, however, Xal is, first and foremost, an entity linked to the Old Gods and the Void Lords. As stated in the
Artifact Book in the Priest Order Hall
:
Artifact Book
Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire
An ancient and terrible force trembles deep within Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire. Though this dagger can serve as a powerful tool for those who wield shadow magic, tread cautiously.
Xal'atath has a mind of its own. Ignore its maddening whispers. Do not trust the lies it spins. Take from it what you need, but always remember that the dark presence in the blade is not your ally.
Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire,
Part One
Xal'atath had its dark genesis in an age long before the Horde and the Alliance, an age when the legendary Old Gods and their Black Empire engulfed the world in shadow.
There are many theories concerning the blade's creation. The more outlandish claim that it is all that remains of a forgotten Old God who was consumed by its kin in the early days of the Black Empire. Other theories state that Xal'atath is the claw of Y'Shaarj, ripped from the Old God's monstrous form and bestowed upon its servants for use in ritual sacrifices.
As unbelievable as these stories are, perhaps there is truth to them. Xal'atath pulses with the foul essence of the Old Gods. It is even said that the blade can grant its owner visions of the Black Empire, but all who have looked upon such horrors have lost themselves to madness.
Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire,
Part Two
Mighty beings known as the titan-forged eventually defeated the Black Empire. They shackled the Old Gods and their minions in prisons beneath the earth. Harmony descended on Azeroth, but it was not to last.
Xal'atath made sure of that.
Xal'atath Broadcast Text
We may have drained the power of
萨拉塔斯,黑暗帝国之刃
, the Shadow Priest Artifact weapon, at the end of Legion, but the weapon makes a return in an upcoming patch. Through Patch 8.1 datamining, we've learned that
Xal'atath
asks for assistance from the players to regain strength.
The following section is taken from analyzing datamined broadcast text. There may be inaccuracies or changed information since the time of datamining:
We find Xal'atath. She's locked in a chest:
This is most abnormal.
Oh? The Black Blade of the Empire? Yes, I did come across it recently.
Well I suppose I could let you take it away from here... I think it might be the cause of all this. Or, at least it said it was. Did I mention it spoke?
Can I take Xal'atath? It's very important.
Xal'atath seems to be in possession of someone named Tanatoa
Tanatoa points at his diminutive friend and makes an abrupt gesture.
Tanatoa clicks in rage and casts a dark spell at Xal'atath.
Toatana clicks angrily.
Toatana gestures and makes an odd whirring sound.
Toatana shakes his head and clicks at Xal'atath.
I'm a TAD BUSY right now!
Where is the dagger, Xal'atath?
I locked it in that chest. It kept TALKING to me.
We uncover Xal'atath and decide to reawaken it.
Xal'atah... a fascinating weapon. I have heard tales of its exploits.
A pity it now lies dormant. But anything that slumbers can be awakened.
This blade is more than a dagger. It is a torch that shall light our path forward.
Find me at The Precipice of Oblivion. There we will use these relics to finally turn the tide with N'zoth and his minions.
The person that convinced us to find Xal actually wanted to do it to empower N'zoth's army
To have waited for so long... I can feel his rage... his hunger. The Black Empire will rise again!
Yes, it has brought the elements together... and something else...
These items I will take. It is time to bring the darkness to light.
Fa'thuul, handle it.
You may keep your offering. It may amuse him.
When we depart, our pact has ended. Cross us before our god, and the echoes of your broken soul will ring through the ages.
Xal awakens, offering something to N'zoth to break her prison
Hear me, N'zoth! I bring you a gift!
In exchange, break the final seal, release me!
As you wish.
You have chosen wisely, mortal.
By coming to me, you have opened yourself to great opportunity.
Your name shall be known in the Black Empire.
We will speak again... soon.
Xal is released from her prison dagger
I can feel this world writhing in pain beneath my feet. I can taste your fear on my tongue.
You gave me this. The sword loosened our seals, but your blind trust gave me the power I needed.
Mae'n galw o'r dwn, mae ein haser wei dod.
Mae'r llygad mawr yn gwy'lio or ti willch.
Ne hi'n dod a'r canig. Rwain cig en i'w laad.
In t'e freud dwi'dia som dinas...
Pay the price for your defiance!
Kneel before your true master!
The flesh was weak!
Unworthy!
Your dream is ended!
They were tested... and found wanting.
They were not the ones you sought, master. We will find others to open the way.
Master... they are... worthy...
All... shall be... awakened...
The blood tide rises!
I am.
His eyes behold every truth... every unnumbered crime!
His devoted outnumber the sands... the stars!
His gaze falls upon every path... every dream given form!
Taste his true power!
All glory to the master!
His glory is awakened!
Aid your faithful servant, o mighty N'Zoth!
Ahh... you think you know power.
The storm holds strength... but there is a price to be paid.
Harness your fury... make your hatred a weapon.
Children... the depths are my domain.
Deeper, ever deeper...
Let the tides draw you into my dream...
At last... embrace the truth of shadow.
Yes... you draw closer... ever closer.
With every choice, you become more my servant.
Mere baubles decay beneath the gaze of a god.
Wither!
Kneel!
Obey!
Yes... you are indeed the ones I seek. The ones to turn the tide.
Receive now the greatest of all gifts. My dream has become your own. The circle of stars made flesh.
She will show you the way. Come... come. The hour approaches when all eyes shall be opened.
This part seems to be from Xal directly to the player.
The universe opens before me. You may want to pray that our paths don't cross again.
And yet, for you, I have something you never would have known to ask... A gift that you so richly deserve, my champion.
Know that you did help to stop those paltry invasions -- and by that, we have now opened the door for something bigger from Nazjatar.
Xal enjoys talking to us:
Strength failing... I need... blood... souls...
I realize it may be... disconcerting to converse with a weapon. Be at ease. I want only to help you reach your full potential.
Why, just recently I assisted another mortal hero, we defeated the Legion and saved Azeroth. It's how I came to be so weaken when I called out to you. That priest proved shortsighted.
You, though... I sense you are truly destined for greatness. We will accomplish remarkable things together, you and I. Magnificent things.
Yes. YES. It's been far too long. This body is so... delicious.
I knew you were the right choice. Such a splendid... hero.
We will accomplish remarkable things together, you and I. Magnificent things.
We make such a magnificent team.
The blood of those who are touched by us... it's so much sweeter than anything else.
Help... me...
Keep me close. I wouldn't want to lose you.
I have always admired you, my... champion.
With some text likely priest-only:
How glorious it is to be renewed. I haven't forgotten your callous use of me in Silithus.
I am... glad -- we could spend time together again. You always were my favorite.
This last quote seems to be from someone like Magni
Another Old God awakened... this does not bode well. Our world is already suffering. The wound in Silithus, the war...
Xal'atath Items and Spells
The first indication that Xal'atath was making a return, during the early Patch 8.1 PTR, was the find of the new item:
萨拉塔斯,黑暗帝国之刃
. The item seems to imply that players, not only priests, will be able to find Xal during a quest, or quest chain, for an unknown purpose.
There are also
dozens
of new spells either linked directly to Xal or highly likely to be related! From those spells, there are some speculations that we can draw, but first, let's see all those abilities:

Xal'atath Model
萨拉塔斯
has received many new NPC entries as part of Patch 8.1 datamining. Some of these models depict her as a female Void Elf. However, Blizzard is hiding the viewable models for other Xal'atath entries (such as
萨拉塔斯
NPC ID 147337), implying there is another model in store, likely spoilery.
Xal'atath and Sylvanas
Going back to the BlizzCon presentation, Sylvanas is now wielding Xal'atath. This implies that after we help strengthen Xal'atath, the dagger finds its way to Sylvanas. This opens up a lot of interesting speculation:
Garrosh, falling to the corruption of the Old Gods, wielded
萨拉托,血吼的亵渎之影
in Mists of Pandaria. This weapon, similar to Xal'atath, whispers spooky things to the player. Many players have felt that Sylvanas' story has many parallels to that of Garrosh--even though Blizzard previously hinted the story wouldn't be an exact copy. So far, Sylvanas has aggressively started war, alienated Horde races, sparked internal rebellion among the Horde...and now uses a weapon tied to the Old Gods.
If Sylvanas and Xal'atath are working together, that would imply Sylvanas has allegiance to the Old Gods. In "A Good War," Sylvanas talks about an ulterior motive beyond the Alliance and Horde conflict, one that Elune and other forces would be opposed to. We've since learned on the Patch 8.1 PTR that Bwonsamdi and the Lich King are both opposed to Sylvanas' actions, and you can watch our play through of that story
here
.
Bwonsamdi: Why would me want da Banshee Queen in charge? Nononono. Sure, I be all for war and death, but dat Sylvanas... she be tippin' da scales too far.
Bwonsamdi: Balance be important! Besides, dat one got a nasty habit of keepin' what she kills. No, ya warchief be no friend to ol' Bwonsamdi.
Lich King: The Banshee Queen's schemes threaten the balance. I had no hand in them.
In other parts of the Patch 8.1 storyline, Sylvanas talks about wanting to "master death," using extreme tactics to fight the Alliance like
raising Derek Proudmoore
in the hopes of manipulating him to kill the Alliance leaders. If she works with the Old Gods, this is in opposition to the Lich King's viewpoint of the Void. From
Chronicle Volume 3
:
A world ruled by the undead would have no more injustice, no more wars, no more mortal flaws. Perhaps most importantly to the Lich King, he believed his Scourge would be far more capable of defending Azeroth against the threats that would try to conquer it. He had observed the awakening of C'Thun and the Burning Legion's attempts to launch other attacks on Azeroth. Neither the demons nor the powers of the Void would rest until they controlled the world. A fractured world, constantly beset by skirmishes between the Alliance and the Horde, simply would not be prepared for another incursion.
The Lich King soon had his strategy in place. He had seen visions of destiny and had plotted all the possible outcomes of his plans. It would not be enough to conquer the world through sheer force. Many others had tried that and failed. To control Azeroth, the Lich King would enslave the strongest creatures within it, the great champions who had arisen within the Alliance and the Horde.
Once they were under his will, the rest of the world would fall int a war of attrition. But the Lich King first needed to lure these champions into his clutches.
While both the Lich King and Sylvanas seem to be about control of the Undead...there can only be one Lich King. And if the Lich King is traditionally opposed to the Void, perhaps Sylvanas would want to form an allegiance to wrest control from the Lich King.
However...some parts of this story don't quite line up. The Void are usually the enemies of Undeath, and earlier in the Battle for Azeroth story, the voices of the Void were demanding Alleria kill Sylvanas. The Void can say many things, of course, but the voices seemed particularly insistent about killing Sylvanas.
If the Void and Undeath are still enemies, perhaps Sylvanas is trying to subdue Xal'atath and twist the power to serve her will. Another potential angle of speculation is that Xal'atath has already escaped from the dagger by the time Sylvanas has found the relic, and the weapon does not have the same power. Yet another angle is that perhaps Sylvanas is trying to cause chaos, helping unleash Xal'atath from her prison to create more chaos and war, which will ultimately lead to more fallen soldiers and raised Undead for her army.
Using Xal'atath in general seems like a bad idea, as the Artifact Book, which we've reposted earlier in the article, describes countless times Xal'atath has manipulated her wielders. Perhaps Sylvanas isn't the one in charge here...and Xal'atath has tricked Sylvanas into thinking she'll help further her plan, only to turn on Sylvanas later on.
