I'm not quite sure why this is shown as the last quest in the chain. This Thrall/Aggra chain actually is far longer. The full chain runs as follows:

Do not log out while doing this quest. Your meter will reset and you will have to start all over again. :( Dying, of course, also resets it. Try to avoid either one because this quest takes a ridiculous amount of time as it is.

Bond 1, Air: The mechanic for this and other fights is simple. You get a bar and as you kill mobs a big mob appears, you kill that mob and the bar fills up. The main thing you should do as your fighting is to listen to what Aggra and Thrall say. Oh and avoid the whirlwinds wandering around.

Don't fall off. In my experiments this reset the bar, resetting the RP and meaning you have to do it all over again. You fall into water so you don't die you only lose time. You only get credit in your bar for the ones you contribute to killing. One reason the AIE morons who flag are so annoying. The quest could be over far faster if you were able to use area attacks. If your having trouble hitting the guys hang out on the edge. Warriors and rogues don't forget you have a ranged weapon.

Special note you will have ...ponies who flag themselves and run around trying to flag you on a PvE or RP server (AIE was the main giver of such ...ponying on my server). The mobs your fighting are NOT hostile until you attack them. So select your target and then engage your single target attacks.

As an elemental shaman, I had loads of fun. Although it -is- nasty, since the quest meter resets every time you fall off.

If you are on a pvp server, like me, you may want to try logging in at off-peak times for this one. I was off today (Wednesday) so I got on as soon as I woke up (7:30 am EST) and it was a 3 minute quest. The night before, the gank-fest was unbearable. People were on for hours trying to eliminate the other faction to finish the quest, but it was a never-ending stream of new people coming in and PvP'ing. At one point it was something like 30 vs 30 on that tiny little platform, and it was just raining people in the water below as the boomkins typhooned and the priests MC'd people off the ledge.

I am sure it will get better after a few days, but for the first week or two, I expect this to be the norm. In fact, I think it will get worse after the first couple of days, because people who got their cloaks will be eager to go grief those that haven't.

Luckily on my PvE, I had the opposite experience. This would have taken a lot longer without other players (including Horde, who are usually . . . the Horde) all going for everything in a free-for-all against the mobs. Point gain is a lot faster that way.

I tend to solo early in the morning; glad I didn't today.

(As a heads-up, the last quest in this chain takes the longest and includes an annoying debuff and a dispellable buff that increase damage taken. And confusion. Mobs no harder, but the mechanism is different in that you have to gain kill points in specific areas.)

This was such an annoying quest. Don't know if I'm just SUPERnoob but I kept dying, and dying and dying on my warrior. Waste of time. I was careful trying not to pull more than one mob at a time, but I kept getting attacked from other mobs anyway. And when I finally got my bar up, I died and had to start over again. Frustrating quest :/

I was having a heck of a time doing this one on my frost mage, until I remembered Piercing Chill. As others have said of avoiding AoE, you don't want to use anything that works like a cleave.

In the end, it became an easy grind when I switched to using Frostfire Bolt exclusively.

I had a horrible time doing this on my Enh. shaman. You cannot use Chain Lightning at all, I've found. Don't even throw down a fire totem either. Took me a long time to finish this part of it, as I died like 20 times, at least. The next two, in water, and earth didn't die much, but the fire one was awful too. Died at least 10 times in there. Finally got it done and got the nice cloak.

I completed this with my Level 85 Warrior-Fury. Killing the Essence of Doubt was most difficult. But when 3 different pairs of casters come into the small area pot-shooting at every thing from Elites on down, it becomes a matter of forget the alligators and just drain the swamp! Plus tying my Warrior's hand behind his back with NO CLEVE! Even those casters discovered what happens with "Chain Lighten in a small but very crowded area does! Just kill the Essence of Doubt, if anyone else shows up to SHOWOFF, fly out till they die out, it very quick! Level up!

I can't believe no one has explained what you're actually supposed to do in this quest. People here talking about PvP and bugs and whatnot, but nothing about what the quest is all about.

In short terms: Let Cyclonas take you to the tower where Thrall is levitating on the top floor. Next, take out those normal elemental mobs, one at a time. They respawn all the time, so avoid AOE, since it will generate too much damage that you can endure in the long run. Continue to kill mobs this way until the quest says it's complete. Nothing else to it.

The only usable information I found here is the good gentleman putting the entire NPC conversation between Thrall and Aggra, which you can follow as an indication of how many mobs you have to kill till the quest is complete.

I killed enough mobs to fill my bar, and the sun started shining out. And then nothing happened. The quest says the 'Protect Thrall from The Elements 0/1' even though I filled the bar until it dissapeared. : /

Each small elemental is worth 5 points while the bigger, elite, elementals are worth 15. Just take down the big ones and be sure to rest in between each kill. Magic mitigation is useful - as a deathknight, stopping the spells being cast helped, as well as healing through the spells when the skills were on cooldown.

I died doing this, released to graveyard and went flying off on a ghost griffin to find my corpse. Went to where it was supposed to be on mini map but found nothing but water! No structure, no corpse and no rez box either. What happened?

Don't make the same mistake I did with this quest. Notice that the mobs are yellow-that means that they won't attack you unless you attack them. If you are getting attacked by other mobs, you are doing something to attract them.

My normal DK rotation includes blood boil and even though I read the previous posts about not using AoE, I used it by habit the first few times. This got my swamped by mobs. Once I figured out what I was doing wrong, I was able to complete the quest.

I did this with my Level 85 DK-Unholy, no pet. I call it discipline. I used no AOE's, but worked as it was the only target. I got my 100 points, to complete this, but, did not die once. I killed the low baddies, did not try for the Big Baddies. And above all watch out for nobs who sling spells out like they were grabbing toilet paper, they can draw you expectantly into a fight way over everyone's head and die very easily! Level up!

Back when FL was just opening up, you have about 30+ people all doing the same quest together, and so killing the level 85 elites and attacking large groups was a no-brainer.

Today, on my frost mage, I died 6 times before I figured out how to solo this one (literally, I was the only one doing this quest!).

Stand by the totems. They actually do give you a slow amount of health and mana return. Not enough for my clothie to take a lot of hits, but it's a good amount if you can keep them mostly away.

Next, face OUTWARD. That's right. There will be guys flying around the OUTSIDE of the building. Attacking a critter that is away from all of the others means no aggro, which, for a frost mage, means a lot. Do NOT attack any that are slipping right by you or in the middle, because you will be trying to kill 3-4 of them at once in no time, with no breather before the next wave hits.

Pick one of these guys flying by OUTSIDE of the building - one that is not so close. If you can keep him in place, great. And whatever you do, do NOT issue a spell that will filter out to anyone coming by. Just start-forward hit-hit-hit.

A slight pause between each one got me up to health. And while I had to kill 20 of them alone, I still did it in about 15 minutes.

I don't know when they added this, but the so-called yellow mobs will aggro whenever they come close to your combat.

In order to solo this I had to kill 2-3 at a time.

Probably the hardest one of the four quests for casters because of the corners and angles so you can't really get far enough away from the elementals a lot of the time. My warlock was in demonology spec with the big guy as my minion and maybe it's him but I kept pulling three elementals without meaning to or trying to and got killed three times before I gave up on the spec/minion. For casters, it's best to concentrate on the elementals outside of the structure because it gives you the greatest range and the best opportunity to pull one at a time.

The elementals fly in all different directions and their paths intersect so if you're not careful, you end up pulling three of the damn things and you get whacked. So, it's best not to use AoE at all and to single out one elemental and kill it hopefully without drawing any of the others in. I had a similar problem with my tankadin. On my warlock, it simply becomes a matter of changing minions. If one doesn't work, try another. I switched out of demonology and in to destruction. The best minion for this particular quest for a warlock is the fel hunter.

The faster you kill the elementals the better. The more time they have, the more successful they are in casting things that cause you a lot of damage. Become familiar, if you're not already, with the interrupts that your particular class has. This is why my fel hunter was the best, because he's my interrupt.

This is called Bluewalling: the act of attacking someone who has their PvP flag up when yours is not up. This is only punishable on PvE and RP servers because GMs see it as a legit PvP tactic...so I'm screwed

What you said makes no sense. If you're on a PvP server, your PvP flag would be up anyway. This is only punishable on the only servers that people could actually attempt such a thing, and GM's can't punish people on servers where players wouldn't have to, yet they consider this to be a legit PvP tactic on the PvP realms, but not on the realms where one would have to do so in order to attack you (which would be...every other realm type), and because of them being able to do something (I assume you're on a PvP server with the words you used) that would flag you for PvP that they don't need to do because you would be flagged constantly and anyways, you're screwed?

I fail to see what point you made!

Blizzard has blocked roof snipping at the present. I do not know if the bug with the bar has been fixed because I haven't progressed beyond 35%. I know that the software is pretty sophisticated like artificially intelligent or they pay smart programmers to play as NPC's. This quest is vicious and fails to meet any gamesmanship standards. Please take three or four colleagues with you to play this quest.

Just thought I should mention, that tornado that takes you to the platform is considered a vehicle and that little "leave vehicle" button that pops up? Totally works. You can still fly your way over the platform on your own however... as I just found out today.

My god...

This quest had me wanting to put my head thru the monitor! On my priest.. I worked at killing them one at a time, and then when i was at abt 85 or so i disconnected and presto! back to 0 again.

So then I start killing again and again.. and im upto about 50 or 60.. and BAM! Deathwing's fire fills the entire podium killing everything! back to 0...

This quest is so stupid.

Avoiding the Shadow of Doubt usually helps here, as contrary to other encounters one would find that the mobs are noticeably quite more tight-knit, and at the worst you might, until last minute, accidentally click on on an Area of Effect damager or miss-click, and cause a Shadow of Doubt to attack, but otherwise clear this quest with relative ease, all up to the Firelands encounter. As for the Firelands portion, the zone is phased, so if one were to need assistance as they could not do the last of the quest on their own, they could get another person on the same quest to help them.

Forget the shadow of doubt if you are alone and undergeared. You will die, the count will reset and you'll start all over again.

Ok - this is very close to being impossible for a caster...

Have died 12 times with my 85 Frost Mage and never got any higher than 55%. Just standing on the platform while typing this I died again...

I am sure that there is some secret to this thing like most quests but after all my experience it is not there...

This is not fun - nor is it a reasonable challenge. I have been playing for quite a while (and did this earlier this year with my 83 Warlock) - so something has changed.

I do not usually leave a challenge - but this is not a challenge - it is close to impossible... And even a great warrior can see that and choose to live to fight other day.

I'm a hunter and found that standing on top of the dome and firing down got my numbers up pretty quick. ALSO if you die, wait and see if Agga offers to res you cause I think you keep your kills then. If you lose your bar for recording your kills, fly onto the top of the dome then back down and your bar will come back.

I just did this quest with my retadin. His item lvl is 346. You have to be careful with your aoe, Holy Wrath, ect, because you may aggro more than one elemental doubt. One is enough to take your hp down halfway. So I just used Crusader Strike, judgement and then TV, Exorcism when it popped. I healed myself quite a bit. I don't remember why people were complaining about bugs, but I did remember when this first came out and I tried it, I ended up being flagged then something killed me quick before I even got to do the quest.

WARNING: these remarks contain information that some players may consider "spoilers".

Considering my experience with the three quests that follow it, this one seems "stacked" in some way against the player -- i.e., apparently to ensure that their PC will die at least once, and probably several times, before they might find out how to survive and win. The handicap(s) is probably different for each Class and perhaps for one or more Specializations of one or more Classes.

Further, there seems to be no consistency. For example, the first time that my PC arrived, an Elemental immediately attacked and killed him before I could even identify which among the crowd of Elemental NPCs was the attacker. Succinctly, he was ambushed. In subsequent visits, I had time to identify and choose each NPC that I wanted to fight next.

As others have suggested:

(a) Beware of using AoE spells or abilities, because they can aggro multiple NPCs.

(b) Fighting the neutral NPCs (essences) one at a time is slower, since you must kill more of them to progress, but that strategy is less risky.

(c) Usually, the hostile NPCs can be avoided. Killing one advances the progress bar further than killing a neutral NPC, but they can be harder to kill before they kill your PC.

(d) Remember that you are allowed to use one potion during a fight (e.g., a healing potion), so move it to your action bar. Don't forget to pause to heal and to regain cooldowns after each fight, too.

Notes:

(1) There are four quests in this chain, each in a different location. Thrall is a prisoner respectively of Air (Uldum), Water (Vashj'ir), Earth (Deepholme), and Fire (Firelands). I was surprised that Blizz didn't add "Shadow". You can renew a quest after abandoning it by going to Aggra for it again, in the location where she was when you received it originally.

(2) After you accept a quest from Aggra, then your PC asks a friendly Elemental NPC nearby to take you to where Thrall (Go'el) is held prisoner. Be ready to fight before asking the Elemental for transport, because your PC might enter combat upon arrival (whether it is an ambush). Aggra will be at the location where Thrall is held prisoner when your PC arrives.

.... In my experience, if your PC goes to that location without the aid of the friendly Elemental, then a "progress bar" will not be displayed upon arrival. Since any progress is not recognized by the Game Master, you cannot complete the quest. This happened with this first quest despite the fact that it was listed in the Quest Log because I had not abandoned it -- I had just stopped pursuing it after the friendly whirlwind had already taken my PC to fight the Air Elementals.

(3) So, I doubt that any of these quests can be accomplished by two or more players acting as a "group". Nonetheless, a player who doesn't have the quest can help a player who accepts each quest in the chain except the one in Firelands. After the questing player's PC is taken to the location where Thrall is prisoner, the assistant(s) must move to Thrall's location for that quest on their own, and find the player who has the quest (who should be near Aggra when aid arrives).

.... The questing player must choose which NPC to attack and start the fight, then the other(s) can participate. I'm not sure whether the questing player's PC must make the final attack that results in the death of the NPC in order to advance the progress bar, but that is probably true.

(4) In my experience, Firelands is "phased", so the player must fight there alone. However, I did not encounter the same difficulties in Firelands that I found in the first quest, in Uldum. But there is one "gotcha".

.... Your PC must activate each of four totems in the given sequence: Air, Water, Earth and Fire. It is best to fight and kill each NPC near the respective totem that your PC is currently trying to "activate". If you are too far away, then a message warns that your PC must immediately run quickly to the totem after the fight, else, that kill will not advance the progress bar and contribute to activating the totem. You don't have to do anything with or to each totem to activate it, just fight near it until it activates, then move to the location of the next one.

If you die or disconnect, you might have difficulty continuing with the quest. A buddy of mine died during the quest and he was unable to gain credit for killing the elementals. He had to abandon the quest and restart it by talking to Cyclonas at (47, 88).

Like the rest of the quests in this chain, all you need is patience. The mobs do not attack you unless you attack them. Pick the easy targets, and once you killed 20, the quest is done. Take some food with you for healing (better than potion and bandage because of the cooldown). Unless you are a rogue (with recuperate), I would rather not do any self-healing that might use up mana. I would also avoid victory rush for my warrior becuase I tend to be rushing a bit with that.

Finally check the shot you are using, and make sure you don't hit more than one targets (like multiple shots) and aoe is definitely out. And for this particular quest, do not stand near the edge of the platform just in case you might be bounced off it.

By this stage of the game, you probably would be playing solo. However if there are other players around, you would get the credit if you hit the same target as them.

HOW TO TIP:
Select 1 elemental at a time. Never select an Elite. Attack and kill off 1 elemental at a time. Allow your health to come back up b4 engaging another elemental. U will have to kill 20 of them.
Select slower moving Airbags as they "breeze" above u. They move slower then the faster bag's of wind, giving u moe time to kill them b4 they hurt u.

If you are a tard like me, and can't find the meter, it might simply be hidden behind your "bartender"-bars.

On a not very related note, if you are a frost mage, you might wanna fight without your ice barrier up, if you put talents into Shattered Barrier, as it aoe's when it breaks.

If you abandon this quest, you can not pick it back up from Aggra. You will need to find Cyclonas. He is on the Bluff of the South Wind in Uldum, which is south of Neferset City. Cords are 47, 88. He will also give you another ride back up to the quest area if you need.

Some interesting info about the NPCs, for every regular NPC it's 5% of your bar. Every elite is 15%, this goes for all the quests form this chain.

Also note that if you get over agressive and die, you have to go back to the Bluff of the South Wind to have Cyclonas fly you back up there as opposed to abandoning.

Didn't die at all on my feral (but had help from a warlock), died once on my warrior (alone). Just take them one at a time, being very careful not to pull more while you're fighting, and it's not hard.

For those without coords: find Aggra at the most southern tip of Uldum, on the ground, overlooking the sea.

OK, just did this quest. I killed a zillion air elementals, standing near the totems that the NPC created, never even saw the damn bar. Probably 50, at one point I thought i had to kill them all and I made some inroads on the population but they popped just a bit faster than I could kill them, so I decided to look the quest up online, where it talked about the bar and all that. I had gone through two stacks of water and was on my third when I decided that this was the end of my patience, and it was time to look online to see what I was doing wrong.

So I flew around the platform, then landed and ran across the middle of the platform, and the bar appeared.

I was then able to move to the side of the platform near the totems and make kills that counted and about 20 kills later I was done. I made a mistake, had the wrong bars up for the first attempt, accidentally did a holy nova with 4 in range and died.

As an 85 with quested cat gear, ilevel 317 shadow priest, I was able to comfortably kill about three of these before I had to pop out of shadow, heal and drink. I popped another holy nova by accident and only pulled one, killing two was not hard. I used my standard PvE rotation, Vamp Emb, mind blast if I have orbs up, dev plague, shadow word pain, mind blast if I have orbs up, flay, mind blast if orbs, flay, flay. Occasionally, if I was lucky with crits, I would kill up to five between breaks.

At the end, a horde warrior arrived (pve server) and would hit them when they were about 15% to try and get credit, or I think he was getting credit because he kept doing it. I made it a point to hit his as often and as hard as I could, sometimes pulling them off him - I didn't care but the one hit credit seemed less than honorable, appropriate for a horde but not alliance. :-)

The rest of this quest line was dirt simple. One exception. Last phase, you are in the fire cavern, killing fire elementals, still yellow. You have to kill a quarter bar near each totem. I was at the last totem, about two elementals from finishing and I accidentally targeted an elite without noticing. I just do not have the damage potential to kill one of those elites, and shadowmeld only broke combat for a second because of a dot or something, so I died. It was a pain to find my way back from the gy, but did, and then I noted that the bar started from zero. So it is possible that I lost my complete position by dying in the first one, and that there was a bar and dying lost it. In any case, all your kills are yellow, so take the time you need and don't bother killing anything unless you have the bar, move around until you get it. And don't die.

I saw someone ask about doing this on a priest. I did it on my 85 shadow priest that has mostly 2 year old quested cat gear. The thing I noted was that it took about a quarter of my mana to do one, and a third of my hit points. I could have done it with poorer gear, just by healing every fight. I only had to get out my shadowfiend once, and that was when I had some crits and tried to stretch it to a sixth kill between heals, then had two misses and went out of mana. So it was time to pop the shadowfiend, and the silly thing finished the mob off without getting me the full load of mana. One way or the other, I got enough mana to survive and the fight was over, and I could drink, heal and drink...and I didn't try to push it again. These numbers stayed pretty constant - Shadow priests have two aoe, holy nova and mind sear, and sear does not do any damage to your target, it is only for pushing your numbers in big groups, or for large numbers of small swarming mobs. Seriously, it is not much of an AOE. Basically, shadow priests are single target attackers, and that is exactly what this quest needs. Holy priests have their own attack sequences, which I know a little, but I only go there if I am doing pure healing in a group, so I guess that a single spec holy could do this with one or two attacks between healing and resting - then again, holy priests go for spirit and that might allow enough regen between fights that you could deal. And I could have done this with gear that was about 20-30% worse than what I was wearing - a single fight left me no worse than 60% health and used no more than 40% of my mana, so with enough patience, really crappy gear could have done it. But gear that was fresh out of the first couple of the cat zones would be good enough. I remember having all purples, gear that was in the costume contest at the wow convention, and I had worked really hard for it - and every cat green was better than any Northrend 25 man purple.

I do not think I could have done this in northrend gear, but cat gear is fine.

I think dying can bug the quest. I died once (using AoE), only noticing the progress bar in my last few seconds of life. When I rezzed, I couldn't find it, but I figured it was a bartender thing. Since then, I've killed about 50 essences and 10 shadows. /reloadui didn't help.

Don't do any AOE's. Just focus on one at a time. Keep killing. If you die and come back and the counter is gone, then killing them over and over will do not good. Seems to be a bug. But when I logged out and logged back in the counter was back and I was able to finish the quest. Now I am on the next one which is when he is water.

so, I tried to do this quest and i kept dieing from the shadow of doubt and i did not use AOE spells, and i keep on dieing! its weird how the essences just keep on coming, like this, for example,

Essence: hey, buddy, HELP!
Essence 2: ok

they both help more and more come,

charicter dies.

If you're using an addon like GUI, the bar may not appear. I disabled GUI and did the quest fine.

I tried to do it, died first time because I didn't know what the meter was for, 2nd time meter went to 100 and thrall didn't escape. What's the problem?
