This elite group waiting for you consists of four Hyjal Protectors. Sometimes one of them will be replaced by a random NPC you have worked with before. The possible options for the random NPC are:

I had thought the NPCs might be quest based, however I have never completed Maximillian's questline so that can't be it. The NPCs must be truly random, perhaps based on faction.

Crona appears as a bronze whelp in "whelp form" (increased movement speed). When fighting, she casts normal arcane spells including Arcane Barrage, Arcane Missles, Time Warp (only 15 sec with a bloodlust icon and no debuff) and an arcane orb-like spell apparently called Parar o Tempo that stuns the target for its duration. I would like that. :)

The guys you gotta kill are hard. Sometimes they will spawn non-elite Fire Elemental adds. My pet couldn't pull aggro off me with them, and they hit pretty hard.

A word of warning: if you die in Sethria's Roost and release your spirit, take care to not fly into Ashenvale/Felwood as a ghost, as that will make you lose your ghost mount, and "Return to Graveyard" will "return" you to the nearest graveyard in those zones, with no way to return to your corpse in Hyjal except through the spirit healer...

As was mentioned, everyone's favorite death knight, Thassarian, is also one of the potential guardians. His emotes include:

your companions also seem to favor PvP so if you are questing near alliance they have no problem running over and engaging them for you

A word of caution to those completing this daily on PvP servers:

Your Hyjal protectors will aggro opposing factions' Hyjal protectors automatically if they get too close. This makes this one of the most time-consuming new dailies to complete because not only are the mobs decently challenging, you're going to be getting ganked while you're fighting them.

I find it amusing that on my forsaken rogue, I got Gwen Armstead to help me out. Says a lot about herself that she'd be willing to help a forsaken.

Though to be honest, on my alliance pally I got mankrik, so I guess te alliance and horde put aside their stupid war to focus on the real threat here.

Beware: the companions of other players of the opposite faction can and will attack you. I'm not sure if it happens only once said player has made an attack against you (or you against them), or if they are aggressive against any flagged player.

hmm.. could be bugged a bit..
I finished this quest earlier today, logged, got on later and did the firelands quest, returned to do the "Relieving the pain" quest and the protectors aren't there any more. I don't know where to get them back since I already turned in this quest. The fire elementals are hard to kill without the helpers... :)

Whatever you do, when you are flying back from the graveyard don't cut through ashenvale. I just did this, now I'm dead in ashenvale without my "dead gryphon."

Besides all the people quoting NPC's, I may add something; do not die in this quest. This quest has you go to an area that borders Ashenvale, so there is a chance that if you fly back to your body, you will enter Ashenvale, get dismounted and fall off the cliff. This makes you unable to get back to your corpse, and if you return to graveyard, you will be ported to the graveyard in Ashenvale, requiring you to get resurrection sickness. I say this from having to experience this, then promptly hitting my face on my keyboard in frustration.

works like this:

1a) you aggro one of those mob
1b) a member of the opposite faction comes in to help and damage the mob (or the protectors?)

2) mob die

3) protectors chase and kill the member of the opposite faction
4) protectors chase and kill YOU, even if you used only single target spells

While there are some awesome and lore-heavy NPCs in the "guest star" list of this quest, they are missing a few awesome candidates. In just 3 seconds of thinking, I came up with

This quest is such a pain on pvp realms. Now im fine with the pvp aspect, but when you add the adds who can kill you in seconds even though you dont even touch them it gets irritating. Oh and did i forget to mention, WE GET TO DO THIS QUEST EVERY SINGLE DAY..

for whatever reason, recently, my protectors will not attack until i either get hit, or send my controllable pet out to attack something. being a shadow priest, my pet is on a cooldown, which makes it kind of annoying doing this now. it was fine the first few weeks for whatever reason

this quest involves killing Fiery Behemoths and Seething Pyrelords

the former is capable of dropping Sulfur-laced Wrapping and the latter Flame-Wreathed Heart and Elemental Goo

I found way easier to kill the Rock giants instead the elementals in this quest. The giants you just have to pull with light DPS so the NPCs engage and then dps keeping one eye on the target, when he targets you, just wait 1 sec after he casts the boulder and then move to the side. Dont forget to position in a way you can move a few steps easy and you should do fine. I think this tip is useful for outgeared casters as me, a low geared Mage

A word of warning for PvP servers: Your protectors do certain AoE spells, so if you take them into melee combat with a mob that is already engaged by the protectors of another player from the opposite faction, they will aggro those, and continue to fight each other after the mob is killed. At best, you just stay in combat for a long time, with your protectors occupied so you can't do much except to try and outrun the combat scene so that your protectors despawn and the combat ends. At worst, the other player just kills you for stealing his time. And would be right about it.
Simply tag the mob from afar with a few ranged abilities (every class has some by now)

If you do however get into combat with another player's protectors, try to call back your protectors with /petfollow (works even if you don't have a permanent pet) or the Follow pet command - if the other player knows what to do, they will do the same. Wait a few seconds, and if they don't, attack and kill them. It's faster for both of you (but especially for you)
*edit* However, if the protectors have already decimated each other, but are not attacking you, get some distance and let the NPCs or the other player kill your protectors - since the enemy NPCs are PvP-tagged, you will get out of combat 6 seconds after combat actions end, so you can mount up before the NPCs reach you.

If you have a pet bar and thus a class-specific pet, set it to Passive, as that will also affect your protectors (to some extent, they seem to always be at least Defensive) but not to Assist, as then the protectors often attack when you attack. Also, your class pet being hit by AoE might also trigger your protector to "help" it, so don't send it into melee as well. The other player(s) will kill the mob anyway, so just look for another, unengaged mob to kill in the meantime. The Attack command should usually also cause the protectors to attack, which can be helpful for hunters who want to stay at range.

I find this quest extremly annoying (and time consuming) on my Mage. I can die way to easily even if I am carefull about those spawned minions.

Probably 'cause I am more accustomed playing melee classes & spec. (Have a Feral Druid, Enh Shaman, DK and Paladin).

Maybe I should try a Frost spec, instead of Fire (Arcane as 2nd spec). Pet could certainly help here more. Heck I should probably chose a Warlock instead of Mage.

I"ve done these dailies with my Prot Pali, Shadow Priest, Blood DK and Balance Druid with almost no problem at all. Now I'm working on Arcane Mage, Affliction Warlock and MM Hunter... I am having no end of trouble with the elite mobs focusing on me and the "heals" not keeping up. I"ve been killed multiple times on all three and I just can't seem to get the elites to leave me alone. If there's no one else around I'm in big trouble. Unfortunately a few days a week, I 'm up really early for work and back late so not many around at those times to play interference. . .

For ranged classes, the s are the much easier choice. There's a sweet spot where you're out of range of the Nova de Fogo but close enough that he won't throw a Pedregulho Flamejante at you. The s are much more annoying, with the time lost waiting for Escudo Refletor and the s summoned by Raiva Flamejante. Of course if you're also on you'll have to kill at least four Pyrelords.

Stick with the behemoths! The other option has all the nasty little fire elementals it spawns, but the behemoths have two attacks, and the worse one is very easy to avoid (just step out of the way).

Frankly, I became so exasperated with the clueless "aid" of these "elite" *brainless* "companions" -- of which *I* was NOT in charge (such a lie by the quest-giver!) -- that I ran off a nearby cliff just to leave combat after three of the NPCs had been killed. I just wanted to stop the charade and discard the quest. My PC died at the end of the fall, as I expected. I suppose that I did not use the "Release" option before I exited the game in disgust.

A day or two later, I found my PC resurrected at the spot where he died. One of the "party members" was on the spot, too, begging for a chance to kill the evil mobs, as though s/he would ever actually do such a thing to a fellow NPC. The worst PUG and the sickest "joke" ever! I am now considering whether to continue playing the game at all.

The "tank" does NOT hold aggro. The "healer" just does not heal. The DPS don't do much damage. They are all too mouthy, not amusing, and when an elite showed up they fought him down to about half health and left me there.
I won't be doing this one again if I can avoid it.
I died about 18 times because the mob would turn and focus on me when down to 1/4 of health.

This is the worse quest in the game. You can't win if you're a Mage wearing cloth. You range him from a distance you get aggroed he throws boulders, your NPC helpers don't help. I'm guessing only Paladins have good luck with this quest.

You are credited any kills where you have done some damage, even if it's the opposite faction doing the killing, and even after death.

So tag them with a dot, or get in at least one hit on the mob if you see someone else killing these. Even in death, if you provoke the opposite faction, will you get credited ;)

Found a bad "bug" with this quest. If you fly down and start attacking anything before your friends appear, they may not be there to help you and you'll die. I've had this happen to me on my Paladin.

Ya, I have to agree that this quest is pretty suckie, considering it is a daily and the compensation is not worth it. I had to die many times to get the slag down to get into the Molten. But this quest is ridiculous.

Since I've done this quest quite a many times, I've noticed a few newbs to the quest that have quite a problem with pyrelords. Little tip, interrupt the Reflective Shield. And do do a lil AoE to kill the adds. It amazes me how many people I see die to this.

I have this quest as complete, but there's no way to turn it in.

the question mark that should show the npc to turn it in to is on top of the portal to the firelands, if I go thru the portal, I'm in the dungeon and all the npc's are fighting and i wind up dying.

any ideas?

Interesting occurrence today. I've been doing these quests on 5 characters since Firelands was released. Today, I had "Image of Archmage Vargoth" and 2 hyjal protectors. No healer. A bear druid, cat druid, the mage of course, and myself...a mage. Couldn't figure out how I died the first time. Second time I realized I had no heals. Fly out - in, and still no healer spawn. I did have a water elemental and that could have messed the system up. But never happened when getting my hunter the flame hippo.

This happen to anybody else?

If you picked up you should do this (the page you're looking at) quest first, as it counts towards the 8 you need to kill for that quest.

Since this was completely non-obvious to me because the quest giver () was outside the portal at the The Sanctuary of Malorne, the quest takes place outside the portal, and Wowhead isn't showing the NPCs for this quest for some reason, the quest turns in to who is inside the portal

Tip:
If you only have 4 protector without any special named NPC, you can either retake the quest or logout and back in to make the special NPC spawn.
It's random and you may have to try multiple times until it spawn.

But take in mind that you cannot reroll the special NPC, when you get one it will not change for the day.
