To be able to access this quest, you need to have all 4 totems in your bags. Banked totems won't let you get the quest from the NPCs

Completed this quest at LvL 80, it destroyed my 4 old totems but it seems I did not receive the reward. The text log says I did. Not a big deal, 4 extra bag space instead of 3, just weird... make sure you have a replacement totem if you do this quest

This quest awards no experience, reputation, or gold.

The item you receive from this quest is a Relic (Totem of the Earthen Ring), hence you are EQUIPING IT on your character and NOT keeping it in your bag. That's why you save 4 slots not only 3.

Hope this clears up some confusion.

As far as you get a new relict, which counts also as four totems (which all relicts do), you can destroy this one and save the inventory place. As far as you have any relict you can drop your totems.
This is especially notable because the four seperate totems cannot be destroyed.

Note: It wasn't well announced, but shaman no longer need to carry totems and aren't offered the quests to receive them any more. This quest is still available, but if you don't have the totems from before 4.0.1, you won't be able to complete it.

You have progressed far in your training, <name>. Now that you have mastered the four basic elements, you must strive to keep all four in balance. There is a practical benefit to this discipline - with practice, you may carry only a single relic instead of all four totems.

Speak to Farseer Eannu near the Great Forge in Ironforge. He will help you hone your mastery of the elements.
