After seeing as a oilcovered bird would be a rather cool looking pet ive decided to tame it.. But when you tame it, it turns into a normal red/brown bird.. so you just might aswell just tame any other bird you find outhere.. like a cool eagle..

This pet is tamable. (Reposting from the Oil-covered Hawk page)

The way to keep the Oil Covered is by
1. Setting down an Immolation Trap, pulling the fledgling to it (I used tame to not cause damage) and let the trap kill it slowly.

2. You want your tame to end at the same moment the bird dies.

3. Immediately cast revive pet to force the body to disappear (but do not complete the revival).

4. Relog, and check your character screen (you'll know you succeeded when you see him flying behind you.)

5. Ressurect your pet after logging in, and enjoy your new Oil Covered Bird of Prey.

It is confirmed that Griffley's approach still works. For those hunters that are 85 now, however, you will probably want to get with a friend to do this, as your serpent sting is much too powerful now (even with your armor off), and I, personally, was never able to get the immolation trap to co-operate with me, no matter how many approaches to it I tried with it.

These guys have around 2K health, so have a friend with an instant-cast spell to kill it right as you're taming it, then don't forget, and immediately cast revive pet and cancel it. Do not summon your pet, and you will not see a picture of it on your call pet bar. Log out. Do not be discouraged when you see the pet in the background has no oil stain. Log back in, summon, revive, and Presto! A very exotic pet that'll have people boggled at how you got it.

Is anyone having this problem? Now that I have my oily fledgling it has no action bar. i can tell it to move/stay/follow and passive/defensive/aggressive but i cannot place any spells. I only intend to use it for pvp so it isn't a huge problem because i only have to manage the growl spell which i can find in my spell book.

Also: this pet is capable of preforming the "Trick" spell

Either I have really bad luck with this tactic, or the abandon trick has been fixed in 4.1. I got it just fine through a friend killing it as I finished, but I was at it for roughly 20 minutes prior to that, and every time, the abandon trick didn't work.

If this is just me, disregard this comment entirely, but if not, take my advice and bring a friend.

Also, the pet bar issue... you'll find that issue with all those pets. They tame on aggressive with nothing on their pet bar.. simply go to your spellbook to the pet tab and drag their abilities out.

Fun note: while using Camouflage, and if you have the Oil Coat buff on your pet still, it will become completely invisible unless targeted or hovered over by the mouse pointer (you can see the shadow underneath though).

With petabandon not being on option in 4.2, I can confirm these are still able to be tamed with their oil buff by using the kill/res method. Good luck!

11/16/11 Tamed this today.
Solo, used a flame trap and took off most of my gear, adjusting until the tame timer equaled the kill time. It took a lot of tries but I managed to do it. I mashed the "revive pet" button when the tame was completing, then hit revive to see that I had it, stopped the revive and re-logged.
Viola, dirty birdy.

As of patch 4.3.3, Oiled Fledgeling is no longer tameable with oiled look using all of the trick tame methods.
