When they do their sheild thing, you will take damage when you strike them

When they cast their Violent Shield (https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/spell=3260), they are immobilized for its duration, so this is a good time to back off and bandage, run away, et cetera.

Also, I would assume that this shield does not hit ranged attackers, but confirmation would be nice.

It's not showing up in my Combat Log either. I couldn't figure out what was causing me to take damage.

I was killing these today for the quest - they are hostile to Horde, and their shield damage does not show up in the combat log.

Also, if you're a Feral Druid, be prepared to die a lot - cat form attacks so fast that you take a lot more reflected damage than others before you can get out of melee range from the shield.

As of Patch 2.3 these guys are now hostile to the Horde.

While doing Stone Tokens (https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/quest=556) on one of my alts I found that they attacked me on sight and came up Red in the unit frame.

Just be cautious when fighting these guys, and make sure that the runners dont aggro.

Also I was able to cast Drain Life and successfuly gain health through thier shield.

If you happen to play a melee class with fast attack speed, such as a Rogue, Fury Warrior or Feral Druid, make sure you hit Esc to stop attacking them as soon as they put their Shield up. If you don't, you will be dps'ing yourself to death in no time at all.

you can attack with ranged attack and spell, but not with melee without to be damaged self when they have the shield up.

probably one of the worst corpse runs in the game, i didnt even find this quest worth doing as a L30 rogue

When they shield move away and:
a) if you have ranged attacks (mage hunter lock druid etc) pound away and bag the sucker
b) if you're melee take this time to bandage, use healing spells or w/e (druids even feral ones should use this time to spell them wrath, moonfire, w/e or heal, rogues/warrs could use throw/shoot)
once they are out of shield they'll move in again keep dpsing until they shield again move away continue...

So I found me self having alot of trouble all of a sudden... The Guards sure made a mess out of my cat form.

My advice is as the following.

Bring out the old bear claw.. That's right people ! Use the bear for those guys. The bear have 2.5 attack speed and do a great deal of dmg while having alot of HP.

Trust me it's all worth it. But you can also use the cat. But it requires alot of focus.

I would like to say be careful if you are a shaman and using Windfury Weapon, for if it goes off when the enemy is under the Violet Shield Effect, that's a triple stack of damage that almost killed me.
These NPCs do drop the quest item Worn Stone Token

Probably the worst mob I've fought thus far on a 32 Rogue. I couldn't figure out why most fights I would lose like 150 health and against these guys I would lose like 1000. Finally figured out about their shield wall ability which does 85 damage to attackers..Rogues attack fast..definitely a huge pain in the ass.

Yea this quest wasnt worth doing as a 30 fury warrior, when i got into the house to get the last gem, the mobs didnt stop spawning, luckily i have defensive stance, but that only saved me for 4 mobs, 5th one killed me with 300 health remaining

You do not have to be the shield guard's target to take damage for attacking them. A rogue and I (a hunter) were questing here together, and even though my pet and I were keeping aggro, the rogue was still taking the reactive damage from the shield. So don't bother taunting these off of a friend, just tell them to stop attacking or use ranged abilities until the effect is gone.

These are SOOOO annoying they are like 50% hp a red aura goes around them and your hp drops like mad its so insane

Violent Shield is a nasty spell- even as a 37 rogue, aggroing more than 1 Shield Guard was bad news. I'm glad more mobs don't use it!

I can confirm that the shield is nasty, but its not a castable spell. When you mind control one of these, (as i did with my Undead priest), you get no abilities, but it appears to proc as a random, as when it was hit by an enemy the shield popped up, and he could no longer move. But there have been times when i've mind controlled one, pitted him against the other, and neither have brought up the shield. It could be a chance per hit thing, in which case rogues should watch out.

From experience this spell hurts bad lol :P As a rogue/d00d best thing you can do is back off and backstab spam while their locked in place... 80 dam per hit my ass sometimes my health goes down like crazy O.o

ya they have a shield spell that causes 85 damage to melee attackers and that means each hit. i tried doing prison break in im a 32 warrior using fist weapons. i have to go train another weapon if i wanna do this quest because ill kill myself just fighting one dalaran shield guard.

I don't know what the hell these guys are doing, but whenever they start to do a strange charge up, I go from 3/4 of health left to absolutely none in a second. It's not a spell, because kick didn't disrupt it, so it must be some kind of ability :/

the "ability" as put sucks balls. Makes you have to run real far when you die because of it. Real annoying.

Turns out that annoying ability of theirs dosn't return DOT dammage. So load up any DOT you can onto these guys and when they start up that ability just turn off you're auto attack and wait it out.

The shield is a damage reflector. Just turn off attack. It may also reflect spell damage though I can't say since I've never had a caster there; just be aware that damaging these guys when the shield is up could kill you.

These mobs were driving me crazy. The red shield was hard to see and the damage wasnt showing up. Couldnt figure out what was eating my health so bad.

The most ridiculous high damage from common mobs . What are they, raid boss with special ability?

I recently lost my 32 HC rogue to one of these guys. I knew they were dangerous, and cast some kind of aura that does heavy damage. I turned away from the screen for about a second, turned back and my character was flopping over and making their death noise. Just a warning, if you are HC melee; just skip these guys. The damage is really, really unfair.

They have a low drop rate for the black tabby cat carrier.. I play alliance and they were friendly. Im just learning you must be horde to get it :(

One of the worst designed mobs i've ever encounter in WoW. It's a nightmare for a melee class to deal with these due to their ability to almost spam their damage shield, often giving you no time i which to actually deal damage without killing yourself.
