Don't bother trying to catch the flying ones. Some are on the ground (Shift+V helps to spot them) but unless the area is overly full with other players, simply head to the top of the mountain, there should be several hatchlings on the ground.
Don't shortcut the stepstones, use the last one with the upwind, this will give you a 2 minute buff that a) increases haste by 100% and b) lets you jump as if in an upwind every time you press space - that way you can reach the top of the mountain very quickly.

Also note that since 4.0, you can bind a key for "Interact with Target", which basically simulates a rightclick. (Credit to Talonic, I'm just paraphrasing their comment further down that might not be that noticable anymore in the new comment system)
11.0 edit: by now, there is also a general "Interact" keybind which is even more helpful to interact with small targets.

When I did this quest all of the little hawks were flying just out of reach but always near an air vent. What I did to get them was walk over to the vent, aim my character toward the bird, click on it so I had it highlighted, jump (the air vents propel you up and foward - don't run and jump, just jump), and right-clicked on the bird as I flew past it.

It took some effort to get used to but it was the only way I could get the damn things. There wasn't a single one on the ground and I was alone on the island.

The center pool seems to be a good spot for the fire hawks that are on the ground, I managed to get 4/5 from there.

There is an excellent spot near 20, 28 with two birds close to an edge -- you basically walk off of and click.

In the center where you take the temp for the How Hot daily theres a few on the ground, i saw at least 3.

This is easily the most annoying quest that I've encountered so far in the firelands questlines. I didn't see any birds on the ground. Anywhere. Ever.

So ... lots of jumping and clicking. Lots. At least 20 minutes.

I'll try it with the keybind "interact with target" next time... if I don't just abandon the quest -- it's certainly very tempting to never ever do this again. Not my idea of a good time.

Awful, awful quest. It's the worst of the Druids of the Talon quests, which is saying a LOT. Between the god-awful pathing on the bombing quest, the need to traverse a deep cave AND a section of falling rock platforms--both of which cannot be done on mounts--the Druids of the Talon daily quest line takes significantly longer and is significantly more irritating than the Shadow Wardens.

The dailies on Fireplume Peak can all be made comparatively trivial by obtaining the Convalescence of Winds buff.

To get this buff, simply jump at the final little floating platform (the ones right in front of the quest givers) that has a thermal vent. It only lasts 2 minutes, but that should be all you need.

How do you get OFF the floating island after healing the druids and picking up baby birds?
I guess I should use the air went just by the side, but I somehow managed for it to send me in the completely wrong direction and then I could spirit ress.
I guess there's an easier way?

If you are having trouble r-clicking the ones by the vents, trying binding "Interact with Target" in the key-binds menu to something easily accessible.

When you find one, stand near the vent facing the bird. Jump in the general direction of the fire hawk hatchling, and spam the hell of out the key bind.

I have been playing this game for some time and discover two things in this game that completely infuriate me. Uneven world pvp and trying to click on this damn fire birds in the air. Thanks for the tips though. Prevented me from smashing my keyboard.

Just forget about "Interact with target" and "jumping vents".
Go to the top of the mountain in the lava pools wit hteh eggs, and wait for the things to come crawling out of the pools.
Done in 2 minutes max.

I, for one, have few difficulties with this quest. But again, I do have a lot of experience when it comes to picking up young chicks.

Worst chuffing quest ever. It's bloody nigh on impossible to grab the ones in the air and the ones than spawn on the deck at the top of the mountain have such a slow spawn rate I'll hit the daily reset before I collect 5 of them.

Just bring back that quest to grab that book from over there. Please. All is forgiven.

As far as I can tell, once you have both paths unlocked you can either do the firehawk quests or the quests at the spire right? The spire quests are SOOOO much easier, I'm never doing these quests again if I can help it. From the first "Stick close (but dont stick close or you'll die)" quest, this chain is probably the worst dailies in WoW.

A friend just showed me a simple way to do this quest

Go into keybindings
Scroll down to targetting functions
then to interact with target.

Bind this to an easy to use key.

Now go to the air vent that is under a hatchling. Target the hatchling and jump hitting your newly bound key as you are tossed into the air, you should loot with no trouble.

Correction to Xxrrsteve's reply to Nathanyel's post at the top of the thread:

The re-spawn rate for hatchlings at the top of the peak is NOT fast (as of 26 Dec 2011). I collected 4 hatchlings that were up, and waited 15 minutes for more, to no avail.

Edit: One idea that may help is that there are 2 more ground spawns of hatchlings on the north side of the peak, at coords 23,35.

Edit: There's an air column at about 29,57 that will carry you back to the main landmass ("Furnace"). Use care when you land back on the main-land - see below.

As one further PITA that hasn't been mentioned so far: the rare green spider Kirix that paths around the north side of the Furnace WILL aggro on you and kill you with his 83k+ HP "Sulphur Cloud" attack. He killed my hunter, so I put my pet on passive to avoid aggroing the spider. Checking my combat log after the second death to this PoS mob, he simply ran up to my hunter and whacked him with a melee hit that started the whole thing. It is hostile with a red nameplate, so I should expect this crap. His aggro range is large and the path on the rim of the Furnace is small, so you cannot avoid him unless you stand right on top of the druid quest NPC's. Be careful of him.

If Blizzard made these guys a reward from this quest I'd be really happy, but this quest is such a pain in the arse...so much for the idea of a "venomhide-esq" quest line to get one and train as a mount (different skin color)...

Also...anyone on the MoP beta able to capture and train these in the pet battle system?
