You have to be VERY careful because the dragon's fire breath hits like a freight train. You have to kite it and stay the hell out from in front of it.

On the plus side, do not worry about killing it accidentally. It cannot happen.

If you have high lag like me this quest is quite difficult, by the time I would see him cast his flamebreath it was too late too move. His breath was hitting me for 78,000 each time. I found a spot at 47.77 63.84 where you have a large rock and three trees to hide behind.

Just killed him for the final quest in the chain, the easiest way is to stay under his belly, do NOT try to kite hime in circles.

OK...after reading the above posts. I still did not get how to do this quest because of dying too many times to remember.

Simple...you want to stun him before he casts that flame on you. This should take 3 stuns max. So if you do not have any stuns on your toon....get a friend to help you. Its that easy, dont try to kite him or hide underneath his belly as some have suggested. Kiting will only make him disappear. Evading under his belly will only get you dead.

Just time your stuns and your good to go.

An important thing:

The drake you are looking for is not there!

I died many times trying to give food to those drakes.

Go to a safe spot, use the meat and the right drake will spawn. Kite him, and when it goes 30%, it turns 'friendly' and you are allowed to use it as a mount.

They must of nerfed it because at 84 I handles it pretty easily with my BE Pally....I got it down to rideable before it even had a chance to blow fire.

Wowhead lists this as my only missing quest, but I'm Alliance.

I guess considering the quest is part of a chain of horde quests, and the NPC that is supposed to give the quest is hostile towards Alliance, I can safely assume that this quest is incorrectly tagged as "Both". Is there an "Alert, this quest has incorrect data!" function on wowhead?

As a Fire Mage - I popped Pyroblast to start the fight - 3 fireballs - popped Mirror Image - mowed him down enough to bait the Dragon - re-targeted the next dragon and Mirror Image helped mow him down - and was able to get this done - died a lot trying to figure this out.

Every where I tried to place the bait failed. The tip I found useful is the location around the Crucible of Carnage. Specifically, I used it on the path on the SW side of that sub-area. (48.5 62.0)

I confirm what pitufita said.
I died many times looking for the dragon.
All you have to do is use the Gryphon Carcass Bait to summon it and just attack it till he stops hitting you and mount it.

ya, looks like they nerfed it.. I'm a mage and I just did it with no problem, got him in like 4 hits and never dropped below 85% health, I was standing right in front of him the whole time

I skipped the cinematic at the end of the quest and it didn't give me credit so I had to do it over again.

After collecting the gryphon corpse and flying to the right location, I saw a dwarf yelling "Beak! Where are ya Beak? Come out now, no hiding!"

I don't think that gryphon was truly wild. I think I killed his buddy. :(

The hardest part of this quest is finding the black dragon roost. coords of the roost is 47.63 Since carbonite directs you to the ending area of the quest. As a 84 shadow priest, I had no problem weakening the dragon once I found it. After you weaken the dragon just hop on and the quest finishes itself as long as you watch the cinimatic.

Er, the dragon only hits for about 12k at first, then the attacks lower. You can get him to half health easy enough.

I found the roost around 47.3, 62.4 just around the edge of the Crucible of Carnage.

Soloed on an 84 hunter, not hard at all. Just dropped the bait, he came, hit him a few times, he turned yellow and I got on. He returns automatically to where you have to go.

this quest is quite picky on corpse placement, 48, 62 was my best bet try it out

go to cords (49,64). place the piece of meat down that is in you bag. your dragon will spawn (it is not the lvl 85 dragons perched on the cliff). You can't Kill him, he will only become friendly after you have smacked him around enough. Hop on and watch the cinematics. Will fly you back to Bloodgultch. turn in to Zaela

Don't skip the cutscene. You'll fall to the ground, lose the drake and have to do the quest again.

You can find the area for these dragons by the arena that you do the CoC chain in. Just set the meat down and they'll come to you. The dragons themselves are not very difficult to kill, perhaps slightly harder then a standard mob.
*NOTE* You CAN NOT kill the dragon so don't worry about going crazy with DoTs or too much burst when it's low.

This quest is in reference to the Dreamwork's animation 2010 movie, "How to Train Your Dragon." As a side note, this was an excellent movie... Dreamwork's finest for animation by a long shot.

If you abandon this quest, return to Narkrall Rakeclaw and he will offer it to you. If you abandon after the cinematic (like I did), you must wait for him to return to his original position - or respawn, whichever the case may be - before he will offer it again.

If you use CARBONITE (addon), you can view the original game map pressing ALT+M, and it will show you the Drake Location.
Just go there, use the Gryphon Carcass Bait and the Drakes will show. The rest is easy...

For those of you who do not fully get the reference ;

This entire quest is a reference to the part of "How To Train Your Dragon" where Hiccup distracts Toothless with fish in order to be able to mount the tailfin and eventually riding gear.

And for those of you who missed out on the NPC dialogue during the cut scene, here's a transcript;

<Your character lands the dragon and then dismounts it>
<Narkrall channels a read beam at the dragon>
Narkrall Rakeclaw says: That's right, beast. You belong to the Dragonmaw now.
Narkrall Rakeclaw says: And if you don't obey, we're cutting you up for parts.
<Narkrall finishes channeling and the dragon appears dazed>
<Zaela walks up from behind the camera>
Zaela says: Impressive. Complete domination of the animal while it's weakened.
Zaela says: Tell me, what is this charm you're using?
Narkrall Rakeclaw says: The Demon Chain. It projects our will like a physical force.
Zaela says: With your wing of drake riders and the support of the Horde, we can make an assault on the Bastion of Twilight.
Narkrall Rakeclaw says: The Horde? I SPIT on your Horde! Our enemies are weak and splintered, yet you bargain with Hellscream? Dragonmaw stand alone!
<Narkrall exclamates>
Zaela says: Another treasonous word and I will put you in your place, Narkrall.
Narkrall Rakeclaw says: I will prove it to you. I will strike the Wildhammer at Thundermar.
Narkrall Rakeclaw says: When I return victorious, we will see who the Dragonmaw call "Warchief".
<Narkrall runs off clearly flustered>
<Zaela turns to the running Narkrall and yells>
Zaela says: Narkrall! If you want to challenge me, you do so here. Do NOT squander our forces on a fool crusade.
