For many warrior tanks, this is a direct upgrade from the throwing weapon you buy from the triumph badge vendor. The only difference is that is doesn't have defense, but assuming you are in t9+, you should already be having plenty of defense not to worry about it.

This drops in both ICC25 and ICC10 trash.

Finally a ranged weapon that isn't a noticeable downgrade in stamina compared to ye olde Armor Plated Combat Shotgun. A good spread of avoidance and hit rating, plus the bit of strength. Quite nice.

In the interest of correcting inaccuracy:
The "global cooldown cap", or haste cap, has absolutely nothing to do with weapon speed. It is referring to the casting time of Steady Shot. Basically, you gain full benefit from haste up until your Steady Shot reaches a 1.5s casting time, then it only helps your Auto Shot DPS. Since Steady Shot's casting speed is completely unrelated to weapon speed, the only things affecting your haste cap are Haste, the base 15% boost hunters get, Rapid Fire, and talents, particularly Serpent's Swiftness (which brings you to the cap all on it's own) and IAotH. None of which have anything to do with this gun.

Insofar as I am aware, there is no lower limit on Auto Shot speed. I've knocked it down to about .5 previously and seen my character acting like a machine gun.

Wait, how is damage calculated in WoW. Several of the statements above make no sense to me.

If a weapon does, say 100 damage with each shot (I'm assuming that is what the 406-665 is, damage per shot ) and then fires every 2 seconds, and another does 100 damage with each shot but only fires every 3 seconds then over the course of 1 minute, weapon 1 would do (100 x 30 = ) 3000 damage whle weapon 2 would do only (100 x 20 = ) 2000. This would give weapon 1 (the fast one) a higher damage per second. Now why is MORE dps bad for a hunter?

You guys ranting about only huntards using this gun for DPS should calm down a bit and go spreadsheet things using current gear. 2pcT10 is very good and very very easy to attain currently, and while this gun's stats are non-existent and its speed means weak aimed/chimera/kill shots, the higher attack speed dramatically boosts uptime on the set bonus; that coupled with iLvl 264 base DPS make it quite a good ranged weapon if you can't snag an actual 264 ranged weapon (of which only one is available for the next month or two). My uptime on 2pc T10 with a 2.8 speed weapon is around 25%. If I equipped this gun, my uptime would go up to 34% - given that the set bonus is a flat 15% increase to all my damage while up, this equates to around 2% passive overall DPS gain. That makes it significantly better than all 245 ranged weapons, and on par with the 251 ICC10 bow.

I don't disagree that it'd be better used on a tank, and it's still quite a lot worse than a real 264 ranged weapon, but that hardly makes it pure huntard fodder - if someone wants to buy it because they have gold to blow and no 251 or 264 weapon, it's a good weapon, and a large DPS upgrade over anything else.

What you fail to understand is that between a fast and a slow weapon of equivalent DPS, the slow weapon will always win because of how instant shots are calculated.

Currently, the normalized weapon damage for instant attacks is:

normalized_damage = base_weapon_damage + (X * Attack Power / 14)

where X is:
# 1.7 for daggers
# 2.4 for other one-handed weapons
# 3.3 for two-handed weapons
# 2.8 for ranged weapons

So as you can see, only the attack power part of the calculation is normalized. Thus, the higher the base weapon damage, the higher your instant shots are going to hit for.

Now, that's for instant attacks (chimera shot, aimed shot, etc). For pure auto-shot purposes, this is one of the best gun for a hunter since its DPS is high. But a slower ilvl 264 gun would be a DPS increase for a hunter because instant shots would hit a lot harder.

Ignoring the disrespect shown by a lack of even the most common of proofreading skills, let's address the meat of your claims.

1) You really think an extra 1.55% avoidance will save your butt?

2) Wild quiver gains nothing from speed. It works out as a flat 9.6% increase to your auto shot damage. A slow weapon that does the same DPS functions just as well for Wild Quiver, so you're espousing the same argument as everyone previously that "it has a higher ilvl, it must be better!"

3) Volley gains nothing at all from weapon speed, at least from every bit of research I'm able to find.

I'd say you're acting as a perfect example of what people mean by "Huntard". Someone who pretends knowledge but spouts opinion, then takes to insulting others when they come along and legitimately say "you're wrong".

This isn't a college philosophy class, there aren't multiple right answers. Saying something is better just because you wish it worked that way doesn't make it so. This is a bad weapon for hunters, any hunter who equips it does have a surplus of gold and a lack of common sense, and the purpose of this website is to provide correct and useful information to those of us who actually care enough about our performance to work towards maximizing it.

Frankly, if that doesn't describe you, go away. Don't come here spouting about how "everyone has the right to play how they want" because, while that is the case, we also have every right to tell you you're being stupid if we provide math and you disregard it. Our intent here isn't to debate the meaning of truth, it's not to hold your hand and tell you "there are no wrong decisions", it's to provide information that is of the greatest benefit to the people who actually care about playing the game well.

In this case, that information is:

There is an ilvl 232 weapon that you can get for FREE that is better than this weapon. It's not itemized for hunters, and no amount of wishful thinking will change that fact.

Our Guild's Main Tank received this in trash on our way to Putricide this evening. Thank GOD there's no defense. We were all very pleased with that, will be excellent for any Warrior looking to get some Dodge and Parry directly rather than through Defense.

Furthermore, a side not, we noticed a discussion in Trade chat last night that this item sold the previous night for 14k gold, and without hesitation. It was a buyout price listed 15 minutes before the purchaser bought it out. If your Guild happens to not have a Warrior Tank in it's midst, then congrats to your Guild Bank fund. Another one sold tonight for 11k.

this does TWICE as much DPS as a Nesingwary 4000. (Rowan=255 nesingwary=129)
Sure it doesn't have hunter stats, but still! it does TWICE the dmg of the nesignwary. that alone makes up for the stats

Why has this turned into a discussion about this guns viability for hunters and what itll do for their dps? I may aswell do a search for the crafted 264 plate tanking boots, and discuss what itll do for my priest.
I will say again for the people who didnt get it the other 10 times it was stated here:

The only similarity this thing has with hunter weapons is that it shoots bullets, all it will do is gimp a hunters dps unless theyve got some #$%^ poor quest item weap in the slot.

If you really think this can boost your dps as hunter you have no idea how your class works. I play a hunter with decent gear (5.6k gs) and I know my class. This weapon is simply too fast for hunter, since even ilevel 232 gun will make better dps.

Go to http://www.femaledwarf.com/ - input your stats, see if you gain dps by using this over your current weapon. Price averages around 2-4k on most servers, which is fairly insignificant. After inputting numbers, the most likely conclusion you'll reach is that this weapon is the best pre-raid hunter weapon you'll find in terms of dps. Sure, it's designed as a tanking weapon, but if you buy it on AH (as opposed to rolling against a tank) and if it gives you a DPS increase - then who cares?

It seems that a lot of non-hunters and bad hunters don't understand just how important the ilvl and (therefore) the raw DPS of a ranged weapon is for a hunter. It is, by far, the most important stat.

The hunter DPS simulator spreadsheet shows that this item is, for me, a 46 DPS upgrade over the Rifled Blastershot Launcher (Onyxia-25 6% drop), a 65 DPS upgrade over the Death's Head Crossbow (ToC-25), and a massive 269 DPS upgrade over the Felglacier Bolter (Pit of Saron heroic) that some people are ignorantly touting.

There are only three ranged weapons outside of Icecrown Citadel heroic modes that are better than this for hunters. They are Zod's Repeating Longbow, the Njordnar Bone Bow, and the Stakethrower. To get one of those, the item has to drop from the boss, then you have to win it via whatever loot system. There's no guarantee.

I have plenty of gold, both crafted Primordial Saronite pieces, and the Tundra Traveler's Mammoth. This gun is a 100% drop on the auction house. If I didn't already have Zod's, I'd pick it up in a second, and enjoy my increased DPS.

Why wouldn't I?

looking at the DPS and knowing the expac which is due in august ( so I hear, I havent found confirmation since im deployed right now) with the new profession that allows one to change weapon stats this gun COULD potentually be as good as any of the other high end " hunter stat" ranged weaps with changing the stats after expac. considering we're only going up 5 levels the potential of this being a solid weapon after the expac seems just as good.

just me but I think discounting this out of hand as being viable for hunters lacks optimism.

I actually had to drag someone in game over to the training dummys and show him that this Gun did more overall DPS then my Felglacier.

So yeah, if it drops in an instance, Hunters and Warriors should have equal roll rights on NEED rolls. Because they can both benefit from it. Tho naturally Hunters in my opinion get much more out of this then a warrior would. I'd rather have a the Hunter putting out 100+ Dps then a warrior have 34 points to Dodge and Parry. Those stats could be gained via other gear, enchants, gems, etc. If a Warrior is needing on this so bad to fill those stats, he needs to seriously work on his primary gear cause it is probably lacking. Again, just my opinion on that.

What Blizz needs to do is create a Range Slot item specifically for Hunters like other classes have Librams, Sigils, etc. Because if a Warrior is in a raid, and I see him in the back using Range.. that's the guy you should be kicked. Not the RANGED CLASSES Using what is his main source of dps.

Bought it for 3k gold on my hunTARD, im gone from 3k dps to 3700-4200 dps, I had the BoA gun (109dps 2.90 speed), i just dont understand why people think it's so bad for hunters, an upgrade is an upgrade, i dont consider it as a waste.
Better and cheaper than buying the Hilt or a nobles deck.

My hunter is currently an alt as my guild was needing healers badly. Meaning that most of the time that i'll be in ICC i will be healing.

As any hunter my first reaction when looking at this was ok another stat stick for warrior as it's too damn fast despite the great dps value.

However on a closer look and as advised in previous posts i did plugged it into my spreadsheet dps calculator to see what that would give and to my astonishment it would mean:
a) a jump of about 200dps from the nice and easily obtainable Felglacier Bolter and
b) a slight upgrade from the iLvl245 Ony25/TotC25 ones.

And this is whithout 2pc T10 for which my alt is still collecting the badges.

With the 2pc T10 this gun jumps 400dps ahead of the Felglacier and 200dps ahead of the iLvl245 Ony25/TotC25 weps.

Mileage will vary ofc depending on each toon gear/spec but it may well be a good upgrade (specially with 2pc T10 and if u get it for a good price) until one can put its hands on a iLvl251+ wep.

TL.DR: before shouting about this wep plug it to your dps spreadsheet you may well be very surprised with the results ;)

I already predicted that hunters equiping this would be ridiculed and called huntards.

Even though there is serious truth in this, thw arguments presented are seriously flawed.

The fact that something has strength etc on it is indeed an indication thsi weapon was not designed for hunters. As such it is probbaly not such a good weapon. Also the speed is very low, which is not good.

However as always it is a matter of what you are replacing it with. Most hunters - including me - will have much better options. I'm still waiting of an ICC drop, but my Onxy25 gun is doing its job. I'm not going near this tank gun ... :-)

However we should not forget there are also still a lot of hunters which do not have those weapons. And also most people - not jus hunters - don't raid ICC or raid only casual or PUG's. In fact just look around and you see plenty of players with Naxx level guns there. Those guys will have virtually no way of upgrading their gun.

For those people this gun is actually a massive upgrade. I certainly wouldn't call those cuasual players huntards, while they are just equiping that wat gives them an upgrade.

Don't get me wrong. When the item drops hunters shouldn't roll on it and it should be handed out to the tanks first, but reality is that many of them end up in the AH. Sure, I'd never recommend paying ridiculous amounts of gold for it, but I've seen them as low as 3 a 4K.

There isn't anything wrong with a hunter using it. These are normally on Stormscale's AH for 3-4k and I haven't had any luck with Njordnar Bone Bow. According to femaledwarf, this gives 260ish dps boost over the Felglacier from H Pos and is only a 2.7 dps loss compared to the ICC 10 bow for me. The simple dps on this gun far outweighs the complete lack of dps stats, and if you are a fairly casual raider without luck on drops, then buy this by all means.

I'm a PvP lovin' Dwarf huntard and been saving up for one.

Felglacier has been very good to me, but with the 2pc t9 and 2pc t10 this gun will be a dps increase for me.

A dwarf hunter without a gun is just wrong and should be laughed at, but you can't argue with dps so I've been a bow/Xbow user since before lvl 80. It's time for a gun that will increase dps again, even if it's got some tank stats.

Tanks being upset about us buying their gun and making it more expensive have a point, but that same tank will check the meters to see how we do and more dps >all.

If there were a comparable dps gun we could buy that 'should' be for a hunter, all would be well.

Blizz, make it happen!

So........... that's 4 right there that contradict what you said. You're just flat out wrong. In fact, really, your own statement contradicts itself because Rowan's Rifle DROPS IN A RAID...... it's just that it is one of the VERY few items BoE and can be AH'ed.

And as for the previous weapons, I know. OMG.... they're only 219 and 232. Guess what? My Tyrannical Beheader is only 232, and is about the best thing that drops by any means outside of raids. So, don't QQ over the item level. Anything above that you should be raiding for it.

Try and wiggle out of that one, but effectively, what you've said, is that wanting an item based on its stats is equal to wanting an item for its raw dps.

Because DPS IS the END-ALL, BE-ALL, right? How about if it provides EXTRA SURVIVABILITY OR STAM? OR IMPROVES AVOIDANCE? Oh... that's right. I'm sorry. DPS is ALL THAT MATTERS. The stats on this that help a tank fulfill it's role in the raid counts for nothing, right? >_<
Or.... Just maybe, like so many other items that hunters lay claim to, it has functional use for MANY classes? Naw. Couldn't be.

Because the training dummies replicate everything perfectly right?........... Pffft. I can give one example off the top of my head. Necrosis for a DK only shows up as 1 point of damage on the target dummy. In reality.... it does +20% of the auto attack damage as shadow damage.

Magic words: In Your Opinion. Yeah. YOU'D rather have the hunter doing 100 more dps vice whereas the TANK would rather have some more avoidance.... +77 stam.... maybe with the extra hit rating being able to re-gem a socket for stam instead of hit. A hunter shouldn't be ridiculed for using it. At the same time, if there is a warrior tank in the raid, you might want to pass this on to them.

Do you or do you not want your dps to do their best damage? Would you rather your dps do less damage? And maybe wipe because you were a little short of burning down a boss in time?

In reply: Do you or do you not want your tanks to be able to survive the encounters? Do you want them to be able to do pulls that will get them a good aggro jump (hence the rather high dps on this weapon)? That argument swings both ways! How would you feel if a rogue rolled need for Njorndar Bone Bow? Hey! The stats on it help them too!

I do agree with the hunters that contend that it was 'unfair' of Blizzard to make a weapon like this a zone drop and not have anything more dps focused also a zone drop. Then again..... Blizzard doesn't necessarily care what we think is "fair". Then again, that's why I contend that we, as players, really need to be fair to each other and try to work things out with each other and just try to have some sense of honor and fair play.

Take charge where Blizzard fails. I try to do it in the guild I run with. And even when I do screw up (and boy, I do), I try to help set things right. You gotta ask yourself.... what kinda of person do I want to be?

You gotta be really careful on that. You're going someplace I don't think you really want to go. Take for example, Oathbinder, Charge of the Ranger General. By your own statement, this item, even though its stats are ideal for a hunter, a hunter who wants this on account of stats would be just as biased as an arms warrior or DK who would lay claim to this for the raw dps. Try and wiggle out of that one, but effectively, what you've said, is that wanting an item based on its stats is equal to wanting an item for its raw dps.

Next time you see Oathbinder on the AH let me know, until then you have no point here.

Lol at the number of comments stating this is a "hunter weapon". I am hunter, and a good one - this IS NOT A HUNTER WEAPON. Stick it to your head and stop making fools of yourselves and your class by rolling for it (except if you don't want to AH it which is a different story). This is made for warrior tanks to have a ranged weapon with item level high enough not to be embarrassed by in ICC10-25, that's it :)

One other point to make is that currently, this weapon has the highest stam and as such would be very nice for Extreme soloing and or pet/tanking instances. I intend to go back and solo the level 60 raids like Molten Snore and Level 70 Heroics. As pet healing is paramount for soloing elites and most pet healing scales off stam, this is actually quite nice for that. Granted it wastes a large amount of stats, but nowadays it is pretty cheap.

This as of 3.3.3 is BiS for BM hunters except for maybe a heroic 25 wep. The only real hunter class is marks that takes a huge hit with fast weps. Its also equivalent or better than the 251 bow/gun that is from 10 man for all specs.

I see many people in Trade Chat or Pugs blasting Hunters who use this. Ignore the Tank stats on it and just look at the excellent speed and white damage. That's great stuff for hunters. If you want to read even more detail about when a Hunter should use this gun, check out the following blog post.

This gun has been proven to be the number 1 ranged weapon for hunters before entering a raid.
If you are a hunter and this drops and your warrior tank needs it, let him have it. However, if no one in the raid needs it, it would take a complete moron to put this item in a guild bank or in the AH if there is a hunter who has a ranged weapon with less than 264 item level. If you have like 2.5K gold to spare on your hunter and you dont have a lvl 264 ranged weapon, this gun is the best deal you can get.
This weapon does not have hunter stats on it but it will certainly beat ALL ranged weapons with less than 264 item level.
So please, all of you non-hunters over there who think this is only a warrior tank weapon, stop being morons and don't say stupid things before you check the facts. People who know much more about you regarding hunters (and I'm not talking about myself) and are not jerks have already done the math and done the testing about this gun.

Okay, first let me say that yes those ranged from heroics have better stats for Hunters, look at the raw dps here. Range DPS is by far the most important stat for a Hunter. Look at any spread sheet and it will say that those ranged fall far behind Rowans in dps. I do agree with you that this is a tank gun and it was made for tanks but you cannot argue that this gun isnt also good for a hunter.

Second, where you said Rowans is a raid weapon. No offence but thats pretty retarded. You can get it without raiding making it a pre-raid weapon.

I wouldn't normally crosspost, but a great deal of the information on this page is BS. From the Elitist Jerks Beast Mastery 3.3.3 Raiding Guide:

Rowan's Rifle of Silver Bullets has been shown by spreadsheet simulation to be a good choice for the BM hunter with high end gear, especially for dwarves.

If you have 2pcT10, the weapon is solidly competitive with (or better than) 251 ICC weapons as MM and SV, and competitive with (or better than) 264 weapons for BM.

To summarize :

- 264 quality DPS: scales your autoshot, steady shot, and wild quiver (and to a lesser extent piercing shots) DPS every bit as well as any other 264 weapon
- dramatically higher 2pcT10 uptime: affects all damage you and your pet do - particularly good for BM since the pet component matters more, and the uptime increase appears to be amplified by Serpent's Swiftness
- hit rating is useful: stats on ranged slot always fairly minor anyway so wearing tank stats in the slot isn't a massive loss
- more frequent Imp AotH procs
- benefits from dwarf racial
- Arcane Shot not affected by lower dps from instants due to slower attack speed: mostly hurts MM, since Chim/Aimed/Silencing all affected, while Explosive, Black Arrow, Serpent Sting, and Arcane in the other specs aren't affected by weapon damage

You do realize that the next fastest range weapon is the "Armor Plated Combat Shotgun"
and it comes in at a blistering Speed of 2.00 and 181-337 damage.
Were a hunter to find "Rowan's Rifle of Silver Bullets" on the AH at any discount they would be smart to get it.

I prefer Crossbows but that's just me (Guns are my second choice I like the "Kaboom" sound ...but I do think this should cause additional threat... Hehe )

I bought this for 1.5k on my newly dinged level 80 BM Hunter.

It is worth every single copper and more. Massive, massive upgrade to anything you can get within reason when you first hit 80. In fact, I can't see much that can compete with it - Felglacier is slower, almost 100 DPS weaker and, for Dwarf Hunters, takes away the 1% crit racial bonus. In fact, apparently it's BiS for a BM Hunter, particularly a Dwarf one.

The amount of people who ridicule you for using it is absolutely unbelievable. The term "Huntard" seems to have become such a facet of WoW vocabulary that people use it as and when they can without actually thinking about what they're saying.

In terms of a raid, I'd go as far as suggesting that a BM Hunter could very legitimately roll on this. Survival/MM Hunters may want to think twice but there certainly wouldn't be a disgrace to do so.

Saying that, on most servers this can be picked up for circa 2k but given it's nearly Cataclysm time the emphasis on grabbing this gun may be lessened.

I think a lesson may be learned here for the future though - players should have a thorough understanding of DPS mechanics before declaring what's good for a class and what is not. This gun is certainly a legitimate DPS weapon, on certain occasions Warriors can benefit from leather items, and Paladins can occasionally make use of cloth healing gear.

Get with the times!

I recently bought it on my fresh-80 hunter for 2k gold, and geez, i wouldn't have believed - if i hadn't experienced it on my own - how many people would pop up and blame me for using a non-hunter weapon instead of farming Pit of Saron for the crossbow! -_-

Seriously, if only people rolled a class and learned to play it instead of spending their time inspecting other players...

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but the DPS on this got upped to 345.0 because of the 4.0 "No bullets" change. Was rather surprised to see this myself, when I logged on, didn't realize it was that high.

Just bought this for 9980 for my hunter but i guess it's worth it.... highest dps in the game so far even it's not really a hunter gun more of a ranged weapon for a tank
