Blackmoss the Fetid is a rare spawn that takes a long time to respawn near the lake. You need to be patient in waiting him out. Once you kill him, bring his moss-twined heart back to Denelan and you'll be rewarded. You need to right-click the heart to start the quest, and it requires level 5 to start. You get a gnarlpine to protect you for 20 minutes for the reward.

funny thing, this guardian kinda comes with your lvl too.
as lvl 80 it goes berserk in teldrassil, killing everything it sees.
wish i saved it for a much more awesome place.

You get a gnarlpine to protect you for 20 minutes for the reward.

1) It's not a gnarlpine, it's a timberling ^^
2) When you complete this quest, you unlock the next quest.
After you've completed this second quest, you get a timberling.

This guy is in a pretty remote area so I found him my last 2 times leveling in the night elf areas. You get an item that summons an npc guardian from the quest. He's a n equal level timberling npc and I found two quests in darkshore he could be very useful on for a lowbie night elf. The mushroom quest has you fight 3 16-18 mobs, and I used him on this one. He was a pretty effective and tanked 1 guy until I had the other 2 down. The Wanted: Murkdeep quest also pits you against 3 mobs at one time, so he could be used there as well to the same effect.

This quest does not exist anymore. Blackmoss the Fetid still exists as a level 8 rare mob however. Killing him will not drop the required quest item needed to do it.

Therefor Planting the Heart is taken out of the game also.

I was unable to get the heart from Blackmoss; however, I had already done the quest prior to Cataclysm. Perhaps a new character can still do it?

I just got the heart and was able to do the quest, on a character that had done the quest years ago.

Character is a night elf (if that matters) and I have been able to do all post-Shattering Teldrassil quests with him even though I'd done all the old ones.

I was able to do this quest on a newly created Night Elf so it's definitely still available. I even got my heart on the first kill. :)

I got this quest today (Patch 4.2) on my level 24 Night Elf priest. I found Blackmoss the Fetid on a small hill near the SW part of Lake Al'Ameth (52,63). He did drop the heart and I was able to turn it in to Denalan. (Remember, if you have already completed most of the quests in the area, he will have moved to his new location at Wellspring Hovel (44,44.3), which is off the road south of the Oracle Glade.)

Also worth mentioning, in the follow-up quest Planting the Heart, I was NOT able to plant the seed in the planter behind Denalan at his Wellspring Hovel location...I had to go to the planter on the East side of Lake Al'Ameth where Denalan first was (59.9,59.8).

I did this quest today. I too found him on the small hill just south west of the lake. I had to wait just 5 minutes for him to spawn. An easy kill for my lvl 38 night elf.
It does not matter if you have done all the other quests. I have completed all Teldrassil quests prior to starting this one except for the follow up quest of course. I too had to plant this in Denalan's old location, not his new location at Wellspring hovel.

His respawn rate is really really long. So if you intend to camp his area be prepared for hours and hours of boredom.

Yes, it does still exist. It is a pain in the neck to wait for but it does exist.

I'm level 12, but Shalomon does not have this or any quest for me. Does it really start at Shalomon? Is 12 really the minimum level? Why can't I get this quest?

I can confirm the long spawn time....... its ridiculous.

I think he is just a random spawn in that one spawn point. Most of the time its an Elder Timberling that spawns.

Can the heart be used any number of times?
Or can you only summon the creature a specified amount of times? Does anyone know?

The quest doesn't start with Shalomon, like the description above states. It starts when you kill Blackmoss the Fetid and loot the Moss-twined Heart off his body. The heart starts the quest when you right-click it in your inventory. It requires level 5 to begin the quest. I just found Blackmoss at 44,30.

This is defently a random spawn, i checked both locations named above, but didnt find so walked up and down river killing timberlings, then i found him at 42,38. Maybe you have to kill so many timberlings to make him spawn.

To answer the post earlier, the item is a one use only item that summons a TIMBERLING, not a gnarlpine, to guard you for 20mins.

personally i just used it for my class quest, but i think it's pretty useless

he is a level 13 eleite. i found him just because igot lucky on tumors.

He isn't elite, he has a silver dragon portrait, which is different than a gold dragon portrait. Gold being elite, silver being rarespawn.

Now it says this quest is started by a Loch Modan Tunnel Rat Forager. Much stupider than the original listing. Perhaps so stupid that people will realize it's a mistake and not bother to make the trip. (I hope).

Just in case you didn't read the above comments...

LONG SPAWN TIME.

If you're lucky, you'll catch him when he's already spawned. If not, I wouldn't bother camping. It literally will take hours.

On my level 12 rogue. It dropped from the rare spawn timberling. The timberling guardian is level 7, will attack anything that aggros you, and lasts for 20 minutes, one shot. Kinda fun to have a timberling follow you around.

I don't know. I did this quest with my other character and I found it no problem, when I was doing the Tumors quest. This time around I camped near the area for 2 days before I saw him. I also want to confirm that no, you do not have to talk with Shalomon in order to start this quest.

If you're deadset on finding him, check the area. If he's not there return later after you've completed several quests. He has a long respawn time and is quite easy to spot, seeing as he's a bit bigger than all of the other Timberlings in the area. I found him wandering on the far side of Wellspring River on the far bank near a bunch of Timberlings to the north.

I just killed Blackmoss the Fetid. At 43,28. 14/1/07 at 7:52 pm.

He's a lvl 12. Rare creature.

I went to 43,29 and found him, killed him. But managed to die, and then went back and before I could grab the loot... died again.

Make sure you clear the area unlike I did, wow i'm pissed...

Found Blackmoss the Fetid today at 42,28, when i was on the female spider kill q. Searched the area for him before on another char for the rep, so i was very happy I found him now. The heart isn't very useful: The Timberling you summon is only lvl 7 and doesn't only protect you, but attacks every mob close, even if you didn't aggro it. Result: I wasted time on my lvl 12 priest, killing lvl 6 grey mobs, because the timberling attacks them. The heart can be used only once and the timberling disappears when you walk through the darna-rut portal. Rep. is nice tough, and for a draenei priest who wants a tiger mount, that's the most important. ;)

The Moss-twined Heart drops from Blackmoss the Fetid, a rare spawn located along the river of Wellspring lake. The heart he drops starts a quest you take to Denalan at Lake Al'meth. The Reward for the quest is experiance and reputation, plus an item that allows you to summon a timberling for 20 minutes. The Timberling is level 10, is a one time use, and last for 20 minutes or until it dies.

Just to add:

He looks almost exactly like a Timberling Mire Beast.

He can spawn anywhere along the banks of the Wellspring Lake (so anywhere you see other Timberlings).

He's a lvl 13 rare (silver frame). Not particularly hard to kill, but I was buffed up just to make sure.

He wasn't there at first. I killed all other timberlings and was on my second pass when I found him.

Killed a rare and found this heart thingy, pretty kool. Now I gotta bring my hunter here, she has completed 95% of the quests in the game :)

In all the characters I have run through Wellspring Lake, I have only encountered Blackmoss twice, both times by accident.

Unless you're interested in rare spawns (which I admit I am), don't bother waiting for him to appear; he's really rare. Also the best thing about the Heart quest series is the XP. The timberling is amusing but not very effective.

What's interesting is that one of the game tips says that rare spawns drop unusual loot. Unfortunately that's only true above a certain level. None of the rare spawns in Teldrassil drop anything worthwhile except this one and none of the rare spawns in Darkshore drop anything worthwhile either. You'll do much better looting the northernmost treasure chest in Darkshore, which can be very lucrative.

On the other hand, rare spawns elsewhere almost always drop a green and sometimes a blue.

I just camped Blackheart for more than 2 hours. Killed him and did not get the heart. Unless you need this quest as a class quest - I suggest dropping it. Its beyond rediculous. 43,29 is the correct location, just dont count on getting this done quickly.

Dude this quest is a waist of time no matter what lvl u r when u use the pet it is lvl 7 if u want it i say get 1 use it right there in noob zone cuz i wont be much help any farther and will die ez and u cant rez its dead dead

ok luke the thing with the 1-12 hours lol no i sat for 13 hours strieght killin those and patroleing the whole river and to no prevale he just extreamly rare and for good resson if every lvl 11 found and killed him it would make early game to easy

I killed this guy while looking around Teldrassil as a 46 troll hunter. Right-clicking on it to start the quest informed me that "This quest is not available to your race".
I'm willing to bet no Horde do this even if they make the perilous journey.

Blackmoss the Fetid is a rare level 13 silver mob. Looks like Timberling Mire Beast (dark blue skin), not the Elder Timberlings (bright brown skin).

Run up the river near The Oracle Glade and use command "/target Blackmoss the Fetid" now and then to find out quickly if he's in the area or not. Just like Overlord AngstyCoder (another post here) I was on the Tumors quest for Mossy Tumors when I ran into him, maybe they're related(?). I had checked the river, no Blackmoss, and right after picked up the Tumors quest, and bam! there he was.

When you get the Moss-twined Heart, right-click on it to start a quest.

I ran into him by accident, while completing the tumors quest. The first time I faced him, i died, and when I returned I easily found him again, I guess he's always there.

But when I picked the Moss Tainted Heart up, the quest didn't start, does anyone know how to start the Moss Tainted Heart quest?

I've roamed around that area with probably half a dozen characters and never seen him. I took my druid looking for herbs last week and ran smack into him.

I searched for hours for Blackmoss and he never spawned even once. I even butchered everything in the area of the lake on.

No luck. He just doesn't appear to work.

I found him once with my hunter... He was sitting down at the end of the river near the waterfall having a picnic with all the elder timberlings I had come there to kill... but as I contenued to slaughter elders all afternoon he never once returned to play... so either he roamed there, and he's a long spawn.

I've killed him with one of my toons and vainly hunted with others. My most recent experience was the most odd. I found him and avoided him as I was completing Tumors, but later that night I returned and didn't find him. I'm thinking he might only spawn at certain times of day. I'm going to check my theory by seeking him in the early evening, which is when I did Tumors.

Just knocked this out with my level 12 rogue.

Shorter reset than some posted, as I saw it when I was level 10 but it was dead when I went back when to the lake at level 12 and it had respawned less than 2 hours after I first saw the mob.
