The Tuyere is only dropped by Dark Iron Steamsmiths. There are only a few that spawn, about 5 or 6 i think. They're near the steamery at 39,50.

The spyglass is dropped by Dark Iron Lookouts. You can find them near the towers that surround the cauldron.

Just to help clarify, the steamsmiths are directly south of Kalaran Windblade. They are up top, before the elevator that lowers you into the gorge.

The drop rate is somewhere around 4%, it's just a matter of your luck. If you don't get it soon, then just keep trying, the quest should take no more than 20 minutes.

wow i can't believe its that low a drop rate, i got my tuyere on my fourth steamsmith and my spyglass on my third lookout.

ok so this quest has not been fun at all.

The lookouts are just west of the cauldron on the top. There average level is about 47 and I was lucky and got the spyglass on the second kill

The steamer dudes are right at the elevator that takes you down into the cauldron and they are on the top level. There are only 5 there that i could find and killed them and there respawns for over an hour. Still hasn't dropped. The only reason i haven't abandoned this quest is because the monetary reward is pretty good and even though I can't use the quest rewards I can disenchant them.

Ok, i killed probably 300 lookouts trying to get the spyglass, it took FOREVER! At level 48, i got over 40 000 exp just from grinding these guys trying to find the glass, soooo lame.

lol i must be lucky... got my spyglass from the 33.6, 53.7 Dark Iron Lookouts and got my Tuyere from the Steamsmiths at about 40, 50, 2nd kill on the Dark Iron Steamsmiths....

oh and for lore purposes its called Dark iron tuyere for a reason, it's not really stolen but were stealing it for them.. but who liked Roleplaying... lol

There are 6 Dark Iron Steamsmiths in total. 2 at the Tents to the west of the Cauldron Smithy, 3 at the smithy, and 1 at the tents to the east of the smithy.

It took me just over 1 hour and 22 minutes to complete this quest. The hangup was the Smithing Tuyere. It just would "not" drop.

The spyglass dropped on first kill. The Tuyere on the other hand hasn't dropped after an hour+ of killing the steamsmiths.

I recommend running and doing other quests while they respawn. Such as killing golems, or spiders/etc.

I still haven't finished the quest and I've been killin these guys forever. You guys are right, smiths are just right from the elevator, but the lookouts aren't only on the west side of the cauldron. They're all around it, any tower.

The "Dark Iron Steamsmiths" are around the steamery, there are in total 6 of them, they drop the "Smithing Tuyere". "The Dark Iron Lookout" drops the "Lookout's Spyglass". They are at every watchtower in and around the "The Cauldron", but be sure you don't go in a watchtower, there's a lvl 48 elite "Dark Iron Sentry" in it and no "Dark Iron Lookout", not really hard to kill that "Dark Iron Sentry" either.

I seem to have the exact opposite luck. The smithing tuyere dropped on 5th kill and i spent the following 1.5 hours killing lookouts. Still hasn't dropped. I'll come back to it when I'm less frustrated....

In 2.3, the dwarves are no longer elite, but there appear to be environment issues, because many times I've ridden by and there's only 2 or three Steamsmiths to kill. I can't find ANY at the Steamery, only one per camp, if they're there at all.

I suspect they may be stuck inside of buildings or something, like so many other 2.3 mobs.

Had no problems as a lvl 50 dranei shaman. Just did the quest, took about 2 kills of each "type" of dark iron dwarf to get quest items.

The drop rate for this quest seems like PURE luck.... I got it on my fourth lookout and about my 17th steamsmith. Also you can group up for this quest and you will both get the loot if more than one person are doing it at the same time.

After 10 Steamsmiths, i got one.... that is 10% chance actually.
Keep watching around the big steamery (with huge wheel), i see there 5 mobs, but don't know where 6th mob...

Two mobs by big wheel, 2 tents at left has each one, one tent at far right has one (with another mob). 6th mob is not seen there, but perhaps another tent behind wheel in the north. But that tent with anvil and forge has nobody.

Edit: There are just 2 seen by the steamery. Not 3 mobs. That makes 5 mobs in total.

Both propably have the same droprate but as mentioned, the problem is that there are way too few Steamsmiths. I've done this quest 3-4 times with different characters and always gotten the Smithing Tuyere in the first few kills but right now when just finished it with my shaman I killed 40+ Lookouts for the spyglass.

Terrible droprate for the Tuyere. Some people said it's gotten better recently, but I cleared the camp of Steamsmiths at least 5x while questing and it never dropped. I'm hanging on the quest just for the heck of it (I have all the other objectives done), but I'll probably end up abandoning it: this droprate is just plain stupid.

Respawn on the Steamsmiths seems to be approx 6-8 minutes depending on what you kill around them.

I have killed approximately 30 of them and still no drop of the Tuyere, so the droprate's still not too amazing. Hopefully it'll drop soon tho :)

Edit: actually, the respawn can be as fast as 3-4 minutes, but it's crazy random (aka- not in the order you killed them first)

I'm currently still doing this quest, (started about an hour and a half ago). Took about an hour to get the Spyglass from the Lookouts and i'm still waiting for the Tuyere to drop from the Steamsmiths. What makes it worse is that there aren't that many Steamsmiths that spawn and that there are other players killing them as well for the same quest.

With the Lookouts, you could combine killing them with the quest, Set Them Ablaze! as you'd find them around the towers you need.

I agree with Kainr's comment and that you should do other quests nearby whilst waiting for the mobs to re-spawn.

If you're lucky, the spyglass will also drop with the lookout with the Overlord. (https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/quest=7701) It dropped for me, so I don't know if this occurs often or not, but it was an excellent way of killing two birds with one stone.

Drop rate for the Tuyere was practically nonexistent for me. Got it after 2 hours of farming these little suckers. Not to mention that there are only 6 of them and their respawn rate is so slooooooooow!

EDIT: Acquiring a Spyglass also took a few billion kills. The mere fact that there are a lot more lookouts then steamsmiths around made this one a bit less tiresome, but still pain in the butt.

Do this quest only if you have policy of solving all the quests there are or you are EXTREMELY bored, otherwise stay clear of it!

This was unquestionably the longest and most frustrating quest I've undertaken in a very long time. The easy part was the Smithing Tuyere. As noted already it dropped from the Steamsmiths on the north rim of the Cauldron. I had to wait for a couple Steamsmiths to respawn but got the item after killing 9 Steamsmiths. Then the frustration began. For the next 2 hours and 40 minutes, I killed Lookout after Lookout without getting the Spyglass. I killed every one of the Lookouts (5 or 6 Lookouts per tower plus the odd Golem who was in the way) at each tower at least 3 times each with some going as much as 5 times before the Spyglass finally dropped. I got a good deal of silver coin but that was small consolation for the time invested. The Spyglass finally dropped from a Lookout at the eastern-most tower. If the appearance of an item on any given MOB is random I must have paid dearly for others who got it after killing just 1 or 2 Lookouts. It's no fun on the long end of the bell curve.

I dont know if this is the case but i killed MANY steamsmiths w/o getting the drop. i then went and killed 2 lookouts, got the drop, and then came and got the drop on my first steamsmith. so maybe go for lookout glass first?

This quest couples well with https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/quest=7729 as you can kill the Taskmasters and Slavers while waiting for the Steamsmiths to respawn.
Another quest that couples well with it is https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/quest=7723, as there are lots of Golems nearby.

A chest also spawns at 37.8, 48.7.

Important read this!

The logging in and out works simply find the mobs log out then log back in kill them and the item will drop go to the other set of mobs and repeat and I guarantee you will get the item within the first kill. I had been working on this quest for half an hour when I saw the comments on here to try it and it does indeed work.

Drop Rate: Lookout's Spyglass Not Much Better!

By far the Smithing Tuyere is the hardest to get. Don't plan on just waltzing in and grabbing that thing quickly unless you have the gift of the WoW Gods on your team. And PRAY you don't have to fight with others to get it either. Been @ this quest for almost 2 hours now and still nothing. Got the Spyglass 1st shot. But that latter just SUX!

Note: Ok as I was posting this I killed 3 more of the Dark Iron Steamsmiths and nailed the Smithing Tuyere. w00t for me! 2 Hours 4 mins total time to complete this damn thing.

Got the Lookout Spyglass and This on my first Lookout kill (I must be extremely lucky...). The Smithing Tuyere on the other hand, took 30 or so steamsmith kills. There are Heavy War Golems and a Taskmaster near-by the Steamsmith spawns, so you might want to do the other quest that involves them while you try to get the drops.

And here are some quests that would be good to do along with this one.

Quest 1

The Slavers and Taskmasters are all around, including 1 Taskmaster on the far eastern side of the Steamsmith spawns. The Easternmost Camp near this taskmaster also seems to sometimes spawn a taskmaster or Slaver in place of a steamsmith. (Or both.)

Quest 2

Quite a few of the mobs for this quest can be found right near the Steamsmiths, to the north.

Okay so, I hadn't been doing the quest for too long, but it was my last quest in this area, so obviously I didn't want to wait for ages for the Tuyere. I read online about this /script LeaveParty() and tried it, but it never worked, I killed about 6 Dwarves. Then I read that smeone tried to click the macro while actually fighting, so I did that and spammed the hell out of it.

I was grinding for this spyglass for some 5 hours and got sick of it. In the meanwhile i abandoned and tool the quest perhaps 3 times. Then i submitted a ticket to GM, and got the following info:

Some addons are known to make problems with certain quests, try removing your addons and WTF directories.

I renamed them (didnt want to lose all the goodies in there), relogged, killed 4 lookouts and got the spyglass. Perhaps there is some wisdon in GM's words. Its hard to believe that it was pure luck.

You can find the lookouts at base of the large towers surrounding the cauldron.

Towers are easy to spot and theyre also marked on the map. theres 4 towers altogether with 1 to 3 lookouts each and sometimes golems.

dont go up the towers though, theres nastys up them =)

jsut keep grinding the smiths as they appear. Take time out to take on the odd wargolem, they seem to respawn quicker and the drop occurs in about 10 to 15 kills. Patience seems to be the key. Smiths sited around the large wheel and lift into the Cauldron for those without co ords.

A lot of the frustration depends on what level you are doing the quests in this area at. I remember being driven nuts the first couple times because every kill had to be carefully lined up and buffs were usual. As I recall I was in the low 40s.

This time I didn't get around to it until I was level 50 and it was a breeze. So what if I had to kill 150 of the suckers, it was just like a relaxing grind with an extra bonus. Plenty of Mageweave, an occasional green, and lots of stuff around for other quests. Don't miss picking up the quest on the other side of the gorge where the big demon is sitting, just for a challenge at this level.

Easy quest really,

Dark Iron Steamsmith drop the Smithing Tuyere at around 37 50 under the tents.

Dark Iron Lookout drop the Lookout's Spyglass at around 36 60 by the big building.

This quest is great with Forging The Shaft - both of the quest mobs drop Thorium Plate Daggers.

For those of you who don't have coords, I suggest getting them but, follow the path south of Thorium Point until you reach Dark Iron Steamsmiths, then once you get the quest item go west and follow the edge of the Cauldron until you reach Dark Iron Lookouts .. hope this helps!

It always amazes me how people jump to conclusions when a quest item drops after a "totally unrelated" action is taken. I killed about 60-70 of those smiths and never got the tuyere. I left the comp, went to the fridge, got a glass of Merlot, came back, and it dropped on the second kill!
Does this mean if you want the tuyere to drop quickly, get a glass of Merlot and do it?

It's just a HORRIBLE DROP RATE, no matter how you look at it.

Addons have nothing to do with it, abandoning and retaking the quest has nothing to do with it, any of the so-called "tips" above have nothing to do with it.

The tuyere actually dropped pretty quickly for me. About 20 minutes and 8 kills. (Waiting for the same respawns took most of the time.)
The spyglass though, I've been having more of a problem with. I finally got it after about an hour or so.

Got this from the steamsmiths in 7 drops, but the looking glass from the lookouts in 25 drops. So overall, the 7.5% drop rate seems about right. I imagine most people only comment if they have unusually good luck or bad luck, but if things go as expected, most people don't bother to post.

Still a frustrating quest, and only did it to get Thorium brotherhood reputation since the reward wasn't too helpful for me. Do it while completing other quests in the area (lots of them) to break up the monotony.

I can confirm the terrible drop rate for this quest. It took me quite a number of kills to get the tuyere from the 5 dwarfs. Anyway, instead of whining about this, I just want to point out that this quest can take a very long time before you can complete it. I advise everybody to consider if this is worth the effort.

You shouldn't have to drop a quest to reaquire it because after 3 or more hrs of grinding it didn't drop.
This is the one thing this game is infamous for, the drop rate is probably the worse of any game in existence.
I wish Blizzard would do something about the drop rate in wow as it stinks. And the thing is this holds true in just about every quest. While I'm not saying don't make it easy I am saying don't keep it as terrible as it is now.

Well, I've done this on three characters, now. The first time it didn't take all that long; somewhere around 10-20 mobs for each item. Good experience points, dark iron scraps, some greens and some moolah. Nice one.

The second time, nothing dropped for ages. Decided to just keep going as I was getting good xp and all the rest plus some ore. Did other quests at the same time and just killed these mobs when I passed them. They eventually dropped though I lost count of how long it took. Didn't really care as I got some greens and a blue, several stacks of mithril, dark iron and some thorium, loads of hearts of flame, essence of flame etc.

The third time, took about 20-30 kills for the first item and not long after, the second one dropped. Got some nice ore, money, greens etc... Shall I go on or do you see my point?

When the drop rate gets frustrating, change the way you look at it. Instead of wishing that Blizzard would improve the drop rate, just take it on the chin and do something else.

I got it to drop from one of the lookouts UP on the tower.

I suspect that they're the only ones who drop it; I got it while on the quest "Set Them Ablaze", which you may as well do at the same time.

The drops are quite rare. I was lucky enough to get Spyglass with only one kill and the Tuyere with about 20 kills. The gloves are really nice especially for priests for raids. And i suppose the leggings are nice for tanks, too.

got tureye somewhere near 10-15 kills. spyglass is a little harder since lookouts arent spawning for jack today

nm that - go to the west tower and there are about 7 lookouts there.

OK I do not know if this is just dumbluck or what but I broke one mouse cussed like a sailor and killed those damn SMITHS for days but then I tracked quest and next kill it dropped.:-(

Only had to kill around 6 smiths and 4 look outs, a few months ago when I was watching my bro do it, it took him about 2 hours to get the tuyere, and 30 mins to get the spyclass

Using the drop %'s for any quest item is stupid anyway. If someone isn't on the quest the chances of the quest item dropping are zero, yet that kill will still be tallied in along with the rest.

Kinda skews the results.......

Okay so I am doing this as a mid 50's druid. I killed a ton of the lookouts and got nothing - finally I gave up and went to kill Overmaster Maltorious - the lookout standing next to him had the spyglass. Awesome!

As far as the Tuyere goes - it's not happening. I've killed so many Steamsmiths I want to cry. BOO!

Before you get to Thorium Point, there's a Quest giver -Karlaran Windblade and his friend. Directly opposite him is a large wheel. Steamsmiths are on the other side of the wheel and on the camps on either side of it - towards the gorge. 4-6 Steamsmiths spawn there. Had to clear the camps and the wheel 4 times before the Tuyere dropped.

The Spyglass dropped on my 3rd Lookout.

Got the spyglass following the same instructions after grinding about 60 lookouts, and have been grinding steamesmiths for over 2 hours. I don't think the quest is worth the time I put into it, could have been doing other things.

God, do these ever drop? It took probably 50 dark iron steam guys to get the Tuyere. I've killed many lookouts but haven't gotten the spyglass yet. Others have said they had to kill like 60 of those.

So thats what you have to look for...

I killed about four or five lookouts outside one of the towers, and a about the same number of steamsmiths that were on the northern side of the pit, centered around (what else) a forge. Tuyere and spyglass both dropped quickly. Just a note-the plate sells for much more than the leather gloves if you are planning on simply vendoring the item like I did.

I received the Tuyere at 43, 51 in 2 kills. The pyglass onlu drops off the "lookout" mobs... and the 4 towers... Start with the tower closest to the drop of the Tuyere then work your way around the Calerdon to all 4 towers... if you are lucky but the third on it will drop... if not keep working the towers and "lookout" mobs... They will drop it... Took 25 mins for me... Solo...

Soloed with a lvl 47 Warlock...Got the Smithing Tuyere with the first kill and the Lookout's Spyglass with the third kill.

Spent an hour & a half killing the 5 steamsmith guys. Nada.

Logged out, came back in 5 mins & bingo! Tuyere dropped on the 2nd kill (at 43, 51).

Got the spyglass on the last lookout guy I killed (at 33, 53) while doing The Torch of Retribution quest.

Soloed as 49 mage.

The lookouts were easy to kill but I suggest that you use the Ice Barrier (if you have it) when you are grinding those so they don't mess up your casting time with their shooting.

The Tuyere dropped on my first kill, so can't give you much information on those guys.

I weren't as lucky with the spyglass. It took me about 5 times grinding through all the 4 towers to get it.

Results:

4400 xp
Thorium Brotherhood, +100 rep

Ok, This quest is rediculous! Garbage rewards & The drop rates are stupid. I've killed 27 Steamsmiths & around 25 Lookouts and NEITHER have dropped sofar while being camped by Alliance who also get the same quest? WTF GG Blizz. /prays that first kill after post will drop it as usual

Edit: 54 Lookouts & FINALLY Dropped... Now im being camped by a 51 Warlock while trying to get the Other peice. WOOHOO. F*CKING HATE ALLIANCE

Edit 2: 1 Steamsmith later, Forgotten Wraps Blue BoE Drops... AND GUESS WHO KILLS ME THE SECOND I LOOT IT.

After you get this quest, open up your Quest Log, find this quest, and click "ABANDON QUEST".

The spyglass is moderately easy to get, since there are a dozen or more Lookouts. The Smithing thingy SUCKS - there are only five Steamsmiths, and the drop rate is only 6%. If there's anyone else doing the quest, you'll be at it for HOURS and/or several trips.

(Incidentally, the Steamsmiths are located on the northern rim of the Cauldron - the big hole in the middle of Searing Gorge).

Not much of a problem for me did it as a lvl 58 warrior, spyglass from lookouts all over the place (2 kills) and the Tuyere dropped on my first kill from the steamsmiths at 37,48.

Just want to add that if you are doing this with multiple people; don't worry about the spyglass loot rights because Multiple looting per kill on spyglass.

If you need Thorium Brotherhood rep, this quest is a must (250 rep); otherwise, can't recommend it, it can turn into a very long and annoying grind.

For enchanters, Thorium Brotherhood rep is worth it.

Your goal: Formula: Enchant Weapon - Mighty Intellect. Weapon Vellums are cheap and 19 twinks will pay 350 - 400g for this enchant (it has no level restriction).

i actually gained 40% of a lvl while doin this quest, yes i spent that long, and still no drop from EITHER type of required mob. While i generally dont mind this type of low drop rate quest, this one just went to far. I abandoned and moved on.

Don't forget that the watchtowers go all around the cauldron. There is one tower, on the south side @51,58, that has 5 lookouts around it - nice cluster

I've killed 30-40 steamsmiths without a Tuyere so far, I'm fairly sure the quest giver is misinformed these obviously didn't steal it.

This quest seems madness in Classic WoW. We tried to do this as a group of 5 to share spawns, but we ended up killing steamsmiths for nearly an hour to no avail. We are unsure if the quest is intentionally bugged or not.

I can confirm that these still do drop in classic so it's not bugged. Just a low drop rate. I had to kill over 15 of each before the item I need dropped.

Guys -- this is a just a grinding quest plain and simple. It's a low drop rate item. It's meant to help fill the gaps for lack of quest quantity. So just do the quest and move on. You get your grinding XP and your little bonus xp at the end. People don't bat an eyelash at "loot 30 of this item and 20 of this item" type quests, but if you have to kill 20-30 mobs to get one item people lose their minds.

This quest for me: I counted
Tuyere = 12 kills
Glass = 10 kills

1 hour of camping during which time 10 Alliance players got their Dark Iron Tuyere even though I got almost all of the tags, I absolutely recommend skipping this trash quest.

Blizz taking the piss with this. 2 and a half hours and still no Tuyere (Whatever that is even).

EDIT: Well I effectively gave up on trying anymore so I asked if some guildies could help me complete WANTED: Overseer Maltorius, What the Flux? and The Flame's Casing which they very kindly did (3 60s might sound a bit OP but the boss hits hard and can take hits).

After handing those elite quests in I killed the first Steamsmith I saw and the Smithing Tuyere dropped right away.
I have NO clue if it's connected some how but might be worth a shot for other peeps to try and confirm.

If you are here because you think it has low drop rate, then yes, it has terrible drop rate. If you didnt get item from first 5 mobs, just delete quest and dont waste your time, trust me. Vanilla quest design is like "eey, let's ask for 20 kills but spawn only 5 mobs, that's gonna be fun"..

2023 and this quest still sucks so bad for the tuyere drop. did a couple clears last night with a group to no avail. already cleared it over 15+ times utilizing the 5+ layers to swap to respawns with still no luck...
