These two items are of the same ilvl - meaning the two items are equilavent in terms of total points. The orb is blue because it is an offhand. You should always take the orb. Even if you find a lame main hand sword or dagger, that plus the orb is better than the staff since that the orb alone is already the equilavent of the staff. If you pick the staff, you do not get to wield another main hand.

i did the quest be4 it at lvl 35 but when i have doned it i couldn't take this quest do you need to be higher lvl or what??

Hi!
I inadvertently selected the "Infernal" course instead of the "Felhound" course. Is there any way to reset this quest so that I can redo it, but select the Felhound option instead? I am spec'd Affliction, and didn't realize until now that the "Infernal" side seems to be more for those that are Demonology spec'd. Did I mess up? I need the + Shadow Damage that the Hound part gives to make up for losing +11 Shadow that my other off-hand item gave. Help!

I found the problem...

notice in the completion of the pre Q she says "When I have both the spirit and the cleansed orb, I will merge the two for you, but not until then."

which means you have to do https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/quest=4961 as well.... after that, return to her and get your reward

Well, at this level there is just one main hand that can give +spell damage:Hypnotic Blade.
Comparing that two sets we have
+3 sta, +6int +19 shadow
vs
+13 int +3 spirit +23 damage (14 shadow)

Even taking spirit as useless orb+dagger has better stats. From the other hand you can enchant 2h weapon to get extra boost.

In other words if you have Hypnotic blade (or can be bothered to farm SM lib) get orb. If not - get staff, you wil replace it soon enough anyway.

Now-a-days, the BOA blows away either combination mentioned. As at level 36 my BOA has 36.0 dps, +16 stam, +13 intell, +10 crit, & +29 SP. As well as my +22 intell chant. I just picked up this quest chain and will do it mostly for the xp. Obviously, I'll take the staff for vendor trash.

um i may be wrong but i yhink this is the end quest in a chain that ethier goes to this ending or getting a felhunter. if i am right then i chose the wrong one for my lock (i love using demons thats y im demo spec)

As of patch 1.11, the Orb now has it's own cooldown, meaning that it can be used without screwing up cooldown on a Healthstone.

Hypnotic Blades new stats;
+8 int
+3 spi
+9 dmg and healing.

Better to go with the orb..

to get this choose the felhound for your apprentice quest. the infernal gets you one with the same stats, only fire damage. orb or staff, its your choice...locks just do alot more shadow damage.

Definitely get the orb. If hypnotist's blade drops, you will have gotten the staff for nothing. And even if it doesn't you can combine the orb with the stamina sword quest reward for the Down the Scarlet Path chain.

I chose the felhound. With a firestone equipped, and with the orb I get BOTH fire & shadow bonuses.

did u need health potion? for the "evil" protector of the orb in desolace? come on..i took him when i was at lvl 36..u must mean the lvl 40 right? if u mean the warlock in desolace in manorac coven, i just dot him with curse of agony, siphon life, corruption, and immolate..the my void did the rest..i just did shadow bolt at him and drained his life whitch led to shadow trance *love affliction* easy..it's the lvl 40 elite thats hard...

For you people gettin angry on gettin between the fire and Shadow staff/orb...the paths to get them is ez...here's a lil' Trick:

Felhunter:This thing uses Shadow,so take this path and it'll take you 2 get Shadow

Infernal:This thing uses Fire,So take this path and it'll take you 2 get Fire

ok most people think that this quest affects you later in your warlock future it is only so that you can have this staff or orb so which ever one you want, choose

The quest items are great if you can't get the Illusionary
Rod, I only use mine during PVP because I went with the staff for shadow dam, I am Afflic. In PVE, it is nothing compared to the Illusionary Rod

Why is it that 85% of quested class items have to suck for the level they are givin at? My cresent staff that I've used for the past 16 levels pwns that thing, and that bonus isn't really all that. As far as that offhand, you can get a Witch's Finger from BFD that is still better, and like I said, that +19 shadow isnt all that great. These should be like level 26 items, not 36.

ok i am a warlock doing that shard quest where i choose from an infernal and a felguard. now i am planning on doing the infernal for the eztra shadow dmg but im not sure weither to get the staff or the orb. i am curently useing the illusionary rod but i am not sure if i should get the new staff or the orb and go for getting a onehanded weapon. Also if i should got for the orb and a oone handed weapon which weapon should i get?

You can also complete the two quests 'n' in Shadowbreak Ravine. Use Ley Hunter as felhound and Burning Blade Summoner for Mannoroc Coven warlock.

I picked up the Infernal quest and captured an Infernal.. Then I read that the item reward from this gives +shadow dmg, while the Infernal one gives +fire dmg.. Is it possible to abandon the other one and then pick up this instead, to capture a Felhound for +shadow dmg reward?

19 damage is great on level 36. it's @#%^ing great. get that into your heads :) as for you who used Crescent Staff instead.. l2p :P

I disagree, the staff blows, take the orb, and run SM Library a few times to get the Hypnotic Blade. the orb in offhand gives you +14 the Hypnotic blade gives you +9. +19 to spell damage on the staff compared to +23 with virtually the same effort....no brainer

ok so i just finished this quest and trapped a felhound for the added shadow damage because tahts what i mostly use when fighting. Now that i have the orb (i use swords or daggers) im looking at it and there is no +shadow damage on the item info pop up. It says +12 spell power and has a heal over time click effect on it. Is the added shadow damage just not displayed or has this item just been remodified so that it doesnt matter whether you pick inferno or felhound?

I will get started immediately on crafting your orb and infusing your new demon into it. When done, you will have the choice of having it in the form of a staff or orb. I always felt it was important to cater to a warlock's chosen weapon... I see no reason not to continue that practice.
