Wait... Obsidia's going to have a problem continuing the Black Dragonflight bloodline after killing her? It sure didn't seem to stop her when I killed her a zillion times in Outland...

Seems that you can complete the quest and get credit for the kill, but as soon as you leave the area, you'll fail. I've done this several times, once making it out of the cave without failing but when I got back to the turn-in NPC, I was still unable to turn the quest in.

When i went to the questgiver (baleflame) Obsidia was already there and when i accepted the quest Baleflame did not help at all. I ended up dying and when i rezzed i abandoned the quest (Both mobs despawn).

I accepted the quest when baleflame came back and soon after obsidia came down and this time baleflame helped and allowed me to just DPS without worry.

Hope that helps if anyone runs into the same problem xD.

Last night I was giving the NPC time to grab aggro, however, she despawned without me hitting her after say 15-20 seconds?

I tried abandoning the quest, however, the quest giver disappeared and after waiting for close to 10 minutes i'm stuck without ability to continue the chain.

Hunters beware: Feigning death will despawn Obsidia. She doesn't care whether your pet is on her aggro table; YOU have to be there or the quest stops.

Just let all those obnoxious whelps hit you, they don't hurt very much anyway.

Let the NPC engage the dragon before you do, otherwise he may not help.

I was on a flying mount when the quest started and when I flew up, she despawned and the quest giving fellow disapeared. However, I went back to check if he had a returned, and a druid was doing the quest. When he finished, I was able to talk to the quest giver and pick it up again. Hope this helps.

If you don't do anything, she will run forward and hit Baleflame, when he hits back you have your go ahead. He tanks her the entire time without any problem and you just want to DPS her down.

Seems that if you leave combat during this quest, Obsidia will de-spawn and the quest giver disappears from the cave as well. Did this to me whenever I feigned death, just abandoned the quest, flew out then back in to restart.

As a holy priest this was kinda difficult cause I was too slow at my dps.

Second try I feared and used Chastise as soon it came up.

So use any stun or anything you got, if Baleflame dies then you fail the quest. If you do then just run up the ramp then it resets.

So a couple things I found out:

Don't attack before Baleflame does, or apparently he won't fight her. Trying to solo her kind of sucks.

She seems to like to drop her fire aoe on you, so it never dropped on Baleflame, and I solo'd the quest pretty easy. This was in quest greens/blues and a few dungeon blues (no heroics), so you definitely don't need "leet gear" or a group to do it.

Make sure to obviously stay out of the fire.

This quest made me cry... I felt sorry for Obsidia :( And even more sorry for the whelps who had their own mother killed in front of them... and the whole "last broodmother is dead" thing...

I know the black dragonflight are the villains right now, but it's not their fault that Neltharion suffered such corruption..

I managed to solo her without meaning to on a crappy geared ret pally offspec. The other npc just stood there looking like an idiot.

Total healing done according to recount=230k. Its not likely soloable by some less tanky classes.

I died during this and waited for the other guy doing the quest to finish it off. Still got credit. So if you die and someone else is still fighting it, don't release.

Alrighty this is pretty tough for a healer to do solo even with the Npc's help. So here is what i ended up doing after failing twice and running back.
1. I let baleflame start dps first
2. I started dotting the dragon up and threw my tick holy fire
3. then i had her down pretty close to death Baleflame died I ran in circles bubbling and renewing myself. once Baleflame appeared again i dropped my quest and picked it up immediately.
* when I did this the dragon did not reset and gain more health then Baleflame and I took the dragon down.*
(This beats dying and running back and being confused. If baleflame dies all you need to do is run and heal yourself till he resets then drop your quest and pick it back up this way you will win.)

I died and now I can't find the f'ing entrance. I found the entrance it is at 55.8, 83.8, thanks to RosyBug. I would not have won except someone else came in when I had her down to about 66%.

If the NPC dies, you fail the quest. Abandon the quest, run up the ramp and wait for NPC to spawn so you can restart the quest.

2 ways to kill her:
1. Tank the heck out of her before she kills you
2. DPS the heck out of her before she kills the NPC

Note also that if you use Misdirect as a hunter, the dragon will immediately de-spawn.

Baleflame didn't help me at all. Nice guy. Then again, I attacked as soon as Obsidia arrived because I didn't read the comments before doing the quest. Anyway, soloed Obsidia and killed her at first try, but it was a really tough fight and I had to use Lay on hands (85 retribution pally, btw) and heal a few times. Damn hatchlings...

Dont spend your time with Obsidian Hatchlings. Just focus to her. If she kill you the cave entrance coords are 55 84. Good luck :)

The bugfest of cataclysm quests continues with this one having 2 particular problems from what i have noticed:

1) Obsidia will despawn 15 seconds after becoming attackable if u dont engage her at all (specifically she despawned after she said "Hatch and rise! Carry out the legacy of the Black Dragonflight) If this happens you must abandon the quest, which will result in Baleflame despawning. He will respawn after about 40 seconds (you dont have to run out of the cave).

2) If you engage her too fast Baleflame will NOT help you kill her and will make the quest harder to complete (but not impossible). In the unfortunate case you die, you can just run to the cave, abandon the quest and retake it from Baleflame (this time he won't despawn).

In all honesty the bugs in Cataclysm quests remove the fun and epicness they would otherwise have if they were better prepared :(

In case you can't find your way out, or if you just want to get back faster, there is a small tunnel above where you fight Obsidia. Just head straight up and it should be right in front of you.

All evil lairs require a secret back entrance/exit. Leads over the ocean no less.

The coordinates to the entrance are: 55 84.
After accepting the quest, wait until Baleflame (NPC) is getting aggro and fighting Obsidia (697K). With this its easy to complete. If Obsidia is fighting you, it's very hard to stay alive to hole fight.

After the third try I finally got the quest completed.

All you have to do is wait intill the npc dies and then respawns which should be about one min.
Then while still fight reaccept the quest from the npc and finish killing the dragon.

Pretty cool seeing a quest that doesn't involve a group that has some more interesting elements besides tank and spank (fire puddles, whelp spawn)

As a hunter, having thunderstomp on a tanking pet is useful. As the whelps spawn, sic your pet on them and you should not have to worry about it. Avoid the flame circles on the floor and just focus on your dps rotation. It helps if rapid fire is off cooldown for this. Don't FD or do anything else that causes you to disappear of Obsidia's aggro table.

You can't heal Baleflame, you can't help him. I couldn't kill Obsidia fast enough to allow Baleflame to survive, so it was a "fail". I called a friend, we took the quest and engaged Obsidia before Baleflame and killed her together, completing the quest. I think we could have let Baleflame engage, but we did it fine together.

As a hunter I misdirected (to my pet) and feigned death without a problem several times. However, she did despawn the third or fourth time I feigned death-- when she was around 2% health. When I flew up to leave (because the quest on my sidebar looked complete?) I failed the quest.

I flew back down, abandoned it, and a minutes later Baleflame popped back up and I could accept again.

Make sure the quest is marked "complete" before you take off and leave the cave. (It almost looked to me like everything "despawned" and a moment later, Baleflame appeared and commented saying, "Well done. Find Lirastrasza and let her know that we've succeeded." Then the quest showed as completed.)

Like others said, don't mess with the whelps. They don't hit hard-- just stand on the other side of the pools of lava/fire. Hell, I stood in them half the time (in quest blues/greens + a few regular dungeon blues) without really taking much damage. The fire DOES kill the whelps.

That said, I thought the dragon deserved to die for sacrificing all those baby dragons like that. What a horrible mother-dragon! :|

If Baleflame dies while you are fighting, do not abandon quest, just accept it again. Obsidia's health remains low and Balehead is full health to help you finish her off.

Just wait for Baleflame to start the fight... give him a few seconds to get good aggro, then DPS him fast or slow. Kill the little whelping adds with an AOE if you have it, they're wimpy.

HOLY PALADINS:

If like me you have low low low dps, this can be a monster of a fight. But there is a simple way to handle it that doesn't rely on exploits or glitches. With high mana, good healing, knowledge of how the healadin works, and time, this is not only a do-able fight, but an epic dragon take-down, old school. I have done this fight twice now (pally addict), and both times it worked like a charm.

1. Let Baleflame start the fight and draw aggro so he'll help during the fight, as others have said here.

2. Use Hand of Reckoning to draw the dragon's attention to you. Doing this, Baleflame never went below 80% health in my fight. Always keep the dragon on you with the Hand, since you cannot heal Baleflame at all. This Hand is the key to the fight; it is what will make this fight a victory not a wipe.

3. You can use Rebuke to interrupt her Summon Whelps or Fire Breath if you want and if it's something you can keep up with. I don't think it's needed, really, since you should be able to keep yourself alive at the point and the dragon's attention on yourself. But you decide, it can't hurt though it could eat up mana.

4. Now it just a matter of healing management. Keep Divine Favor and Avenging Wrath up to help your attacks and healing, Divine Plea for mana management (I swear by it, not all Paladins do though), and use Divine Protection to stay alive. It is a long fight for low-dps healers like us, you will likely go oom at some point. But we don't have to worry about that, do we? Word of Glory uses Holy Power not mana, and by the end of the fight, while eaking out mana with Divine Plea, I was healing myself with charges from Word of Glory and it was only a matter of time before the dragon goes down.

And down she will go. Enjoy your victory.

same happened to me - i feigned to get her off me and she despawned.. so did the quest giver. i went back to camp to see if could get it back and couldnt then came here and found out he respawns in the cave.

Need help! i abandoned the quest cause i was on mount and she dissapeared so i thought i can get back the quest again but when i returned to the npc it doesn't have the "!" on it anymore...what to do!

I had to try this quest 3 times before figuring it out. The first time I just charged in and got destroyed by the dragon whelps and the npc didn't help me at all. The second time the npc did help, but then stopped helping for some reason and the whelps over took over. The 3rd time I let the npc attack for a bit and then engaged. This seemed to work because the whelps didn't come till she was already below 3/4 health and it wasn't to bad to burn her.

Best way to deal with the hatchlings is to drag them into the lava pools. The lava doesn't do that much damage to you (it was doing ~700 a tick to my rogue, who's decked out mostly in quest gear but still has 102k HP, so it's not bad), but it wipes out the hatchlings fast.

If Bale dies and you failed the quest, you DON'T have to abandon it. Keep the fight going, wait until he respawns, in like 15 secs and pick the quest up again. He will help you continue the fight. He died with her at about 10% left and helped finish her up once I accepted the quest again.
