I was able to complete this objective as a passerby, someone else had killed the tentacles.

So, I picked up this quest, freed the whale, went back to the NPC, and while his little ice-bubble thing was still there, he wasn't. I abandoned the quest, zoned in/out repeatedly, logged in and out several times- nothin'. Kind of a pain, considering that the vashj'ir quest achievement is bugged on top of that.

And I was unable to complete this no matter how many times I tried, nor how many times I killed the tentacles.

This was pretty much the same experience I had.

One of a handful of quests that had bugged out on me on release day. Sadly, I did not abandon the quest and attempt to retake it until after the epic cinematic that grants you the 20k leagues achievement, at which point the Wavespeaker was no longer to be found to try to retake the quest. (It was a long day.) I have a ticket in currently.

A GM finally answered my ticket today, and stated that the reason the NPC for this quest disappears for some players, is because of a new feature they've implemented calling 'phasing' where the world looks different to different players after doing certain quest chains. He recommended that you only do one quest chain at a time and not take quests from lots of different Cataclysm areas, which is sort of a sucker - but hopefully they sort it soon!

I did it fairly easy with my hunter it shrinks at cold so i used freezing trap to shrink the tentacles and then kill them

Activate Valoren's Shrinkage Totem, which weakens tentacle. Rush in and kill. Drop new totem for each tentacle. Free Wil'hai. Win.

The big white wave that comes from the tentacles make my fps go from 60 (top, smooth) to 29 making the game really choppy. I have an XFX 5970 graphics card, why is this happening? Does it not understand how to render smoke particles in a fast way?

So guys you only have to do, go near to one of the tentacles and plant it the totem there, after the tentacle it will be smaller and have 55,7 k health, than u can kill it. Repeat as well with on the rest of tentacles. DONE! :) Good Luck!

I had the phasing problem just now. I had only quests from promontory point, not different areas. She kept phasing out as I got close to talk. The only way I could talk was to come at her so the second rib of the skeleton was directly behind her and I had to be floating at her level. Even then, I had to inch closer, she'd phase, back up, she'd come back, and so on till I could click on her.

Wish someone could figure out Honor And Privilege. I can't get credit for going to the balloon. Been all around and THROUGH it. Nothing. Waiting on ticket. How do these things make it past BETA?

It won't work -.- just won't do it. Tentacle, shrink, kill(x3)
Wil'hai went swimming off, i went to the lassy in the bubble.... ... "Wil'hai is still trapped" .... the blind %^&*! Thinks i didn't do it!

Help me and anyone else who has this problem.

I find if you stand just to the left of the starfish with the quest giver between your toon and the 3rd rib bone is the best place to be. And as others have stated just tap forward and back until you find the optimum distance.

Be careful when engaging the tentacles. They may grab you and do unspeakable things with you.
On the plus side: Your armor doesn't drop to zero after they grabbed you.

There are a pair of sharks circling at least two of the tentacles; take them out first; this isn't a fun three-mob party and they will gang jump you (and of course follow if you run).

You can use non-melee spells while you're grabbed--great time to heal.

Lvl 82 DPS pally; will confess I died twice.

A VERY GOOD TIP!
When you have shrunken a tentacle hide yourself inside the texture of the tentacle, then you are 90% chance immune to 'Constrict' :P

Judging from the picture in the quest, the creature is a Nurse Shark, so the "Hai" for shark in many languages makes perfect sense. :-)

@Greydyn - It's way too big to be a Nurse shark, more like a whale shark, except a bit more toothy.
