So the reason I like WoW is because I don't have to aim at stuff and largely can get away with low spatial awareness, mediocre motor skills, and crap depth perception.
Not so in this quest. You must flap to stay in the air, so you're spamming the 4 key. You must then fly directly through mobs that are flying and no they're not just standing still being nice, they are moving. You're flapping, desperately trying to just stay aloft, and then there's the hopeless chasing of mobs. In 10 minutes I could hit 2 out the 10 required.
This quest is a special hell, similar to the Netherwing races. Unfortunately it's also part of a chain and I'm a completionist.

This whole chain is a reference to the classic arcade game Joust, which I think most people remember playing on the Atari 2600 (it was later ported to the NES and other systems of the time). It was a game where you rode around on a bird, carrying a lance, and jousted buzzard riding bad guys out of the sky. It played the same way these quests do (you mash the Jump button for altitude, and let gravity do the rest).

For the people who dislike the control scheme, it becomes very intuitive in time. Simply flapping quickly for speed and falling into the buzzards works fine. Just know that it's very rare that you fly right into enemies, and it's a lot easier to hit them coming in from various angles.

If I recall correctly, accepting this quest should give you a raid warning saying "Prepare to joust, buzzard bait!" which is also a reference to Joust. The message appears when you first start a game.

There is no requirement that you actually hit the mobs in accordance with the original rules of Joust. In the original game, you were required to hit enemies from above. That doesn't apply here in any way.

This may very well be one of the worst quest chains I have ever had the misfortune of completing. It takes all of the pain and suffering of the ToC jousting from before they readjusted AP stats, and adds it to an arthritis inducing button mashing mechanic.

I play with 700 ping so I had to find another way to do this. What I did was go AFK on one of the rocks on a patrol route so they flew right into my lance. Took 10 mins but I got it in the end.

Once I stopped thinking of the quest as flying, and pretended I was in a giant bouncy house, things went much smoother. =)

The "flap" button is misleading, since the average player will think "flying" and thus equate it with their regular flying mount. But the "flap" button moves the player in a arc, so it's more like a bouncy house or an astronaut on the moon than straightforward flying.

It does take a bit of practice to judge how far the "flap" arc will take you to properly "land" on a buzzard for quest credit, but once you have that down the quest is pretty easy.

ETA: towards the back of the cave, there are two mini tunnels with a bunch of eggs and no falling meteors. If you're low on health and/or just sick of the quest mechanic, go back there and just run over eggs.

OMG I've played WOW for more years than I can remember and have completed some pretty retarded quest lines but this one takes the cake! What drugs were blizzard on when they thought this was a good idea? Don't get me wrong the whole concept of Flight Jousting is cool but the way they have implemented the flight controls is kinda like a horny Worgen trying to hump a tennis ball! If you could control the flight of your mount and have a jousting button to click when you are in range that would be cool but they way it is now is just rediculous and needs to be changed (homage to the arcade game or not)! (Looks over at Blizzard employees) "Put the crack pipe down guys and make some decent quests"!

Hehe, some funny, disparaging comments on this quest, as to be expected. I have to admit when i first jumped on the Burd i was thinking 'Blizz cannot be serious?'.

But by the time i got to Wave 2, I was actually quite enjoying myself - something a bit different and like playing a game within a game. The biggest thing for me was getting over the fear that I couldn't flap my wings fast enough and was going to ditch myself in the lava.

But basically what you are doing is practising the art of deflective target shooting/hitting. So you want to line up where your target is flying to and turn your mount to a point ahead of your targets flight path, before hitting your Flap button, and then with any luck you'll sail in a trajectory line towards your target - your mount being like an unguided missile.

Should you get low on health, simply land on one of the bottom rocks emerging from the lava, and then dismount and heal yourself. Don't worry about your mount having flown off, because towards the northern part of the cavern is another NPC named Numa Skyclaw and she has a couple of mounts next to her. Also, the lava at the bottom doesn't hurt you when swimming through it!

I loved the Achievment at the end of it. As far as the controlls go Blizz nailed
the feel and style of old school Joust, just a 3D version. If the flying was any different
it would not have been like Joust. Loved it!

I absolutely loved it. Once I saw the "Buzzard Bait" raid warning, I lit up. The mechanics took a bit of getting used to, but I wouldn't want this any other way. Regular flying would have been to quick and boring. I enjoyed the challenge.

I guess this was more for the older players, like myself, who enjoy pop culture references.

Warning to all players who play with "Auto Dismount in Flight" option checked on...

After you complete this quest chain then get on your flying mount to get your quest reward from the NPC all the way up the cliff... remember that your flight controls have changed and do not press the "4" key to try and change directions mid air. If you do press the "4" key, pray your skill requires a target, or you have a slow fall ability.

When I was training, I also thought this was going to suck. By the end of Wave 1, I had it down - and I completed the entire chain, without ever dying once. One possibly useful tip. When you complete Wave 1, don't just accept the Wave 2 quest. Instead, decline it; dismount; go get a new mount; then accept and do the next quest. This way you start each quest, with a mount which is at 100% health.

Sure, it might be difficult to control if you're playing on a 12 baud modem from 1986, or if you have flippers for hands, but if you've ever played joust before, this minigame just leaves you wanting more.

Be prepared if you are known to have motion sickness. Be prepared even if you aren't known to have motion sickness. I've literally felt sick to my stomach the whole entire time my toon has been on that stupid bird.

Geez, youngs kids griping about the mechanics of this particular quest chain when it is a homage to Joust, the old classic video game from the Atari/NES days. The controls are meant to be like that to feel more similar to the game. I for one, tip my hat for the guy that made this tribute. It was very amusing and enjoyful.

I wouldnt mind a challenge but this is simply retarded, rahter than a challenge. By the time you manage to get to even one buzzard your hand is so cramped from spamming flap you cant do anything more than take a ten minute break to let your hand uncramp.
There is no control worse than this in any of the quests I have ever done, its positively the worst mechanic I have ever seen in a quest.

I would abandon it if it was not detrimental to moving along in the chain, instead I have to suffer through whatever ridiculous amount of time it will take me to finish it.

man, i am from the older generation and never played joust.....
so far i have been on it for over 10 hours flying around trying to hit something. but nooooooo

i have zero hits and for some reason someting happened and the quest re set it self.
i may have accidently ran into one of them and now i have lost credit.

second wave, there is a anotehr wave of this ^&*! while here i have see folks come in and the enemies fall like rocks. i am amazed and dont have a clue how to work this quest.

I don't see what the fuss is about. I picked up the Joust reference almost instantly. That game was before my time, but I have played it on a browser port that macromedia shockwave hosted on their website (Midway did but... they filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy just a year ago). It might still be there if some of you want to play the 2d classic.

Converse to the 2d game's difficulty, this was much easier.
I would imagine people would NOT complain that this is a quest that's done differently than almost all of the other boring traditional ones.
It's not like the mechanic is hard. Hell to pull a perfect 180 I figured out that I had to wait an extra second (maybe not that long) before flapping.

For those of you who have never heard of Joust, never played Joust, and don't give a *!@# about Joust, here's something that helped me get through this frustrating quest. Flying with any control is difficult, so do as little as possible. Get yourself and your bird onto one of the high plateau arond the edge of the cave. Wait for a firebird to fly close and pounce. A couple of flaps and you've got the kill and you're back on the shelf to wait for the next firebird. And they come by every few seconds.

When you have to stomp eggs, you can stay at the bottom and jump from island to island. The respawn is quick.

I can't say I loved this quest line.

This one has to be the biggest waste of time yet, and there are many.

You can't really control the bird thing, it takes ages to get the hang of it and the rewards are small.

If you are levelling, then avoid it, if you just want to play flying games for fun, OK.

Personally I didn't find it fun.

I just did this chain on my alt and I must say they made the whole thing a lot easier. You youngins sure are lucky!

They doubled the number of eggs for the egg quest and in general it's not quite as difficult/dangerous to fly around.

I don't see what the issue was, honestly. I would have liked to see some directional control but this quest line was clearly meant as a fun one. There are no major quests after it, so you can skip it if it really p*sses you off that much. I liked it after I got the hang of the controls. I liked the little vanity pet reward that you get if you actually complete the three waves. Overall, it was different. I liked it. It wasn't a requirement, so if you don't want to try something new, don't do it. It's very, very simple.

Wow can't believe I had to scroll through almost the entire page of posts to get to anything useful to help. The history is great, and if you get the reference, awesome. I didn't, I never played joust, yet I had atari.

In general, this quest wouldn't have been so bad if, as they player we were able to steer it properly. The flap thing (which defaulted to "4" as a keybind, and I play on a laptop with no actual mouse, though I can see those who do play primarily with a mouse getting annoyed really easily) wasn't so much of an issue as the not really being able to steer it properly. I just ended up flapping and trying to cruise in the direction I wanted to go with my arrow keys, sometimes it worked.. other times not so much. And landing, well, it would have been nice if we could land it somehow instead of gliding to a stop.

The best advice I can give is "accidently" fall through the birds, flap into them, flap at them. To try to do it on purpose just frustrated me. Once I realized I didn't have to target anything, it went a little bit faster. Waves 1 and 2 both ask you to kill 10 flying things.. suffer through it, to get to the cake walk.

Wave 3 is the easiest. I promise. Take note of where the little islands are at the bottom, they will have 3-4 eggs on them. Land (as best you can) on them, you just walk around the island and the eggs pop. Face the direction of the next little island, hitting flap once should hop you there, pop the eggs. You can get most of them this way. There are also some tunnels (noted elsewhere in the comments) where there is a friendly tauren with some mounts if you need a new one. Go through both sides, I think I popped a total of 10 or so between both tunnels. Check the health of your flyer, if you are at half, pick up a new one. The higher pillars also have eggs on top, you might need to get up to those to finish off the quest.

Other random advice noted elsewhere in the comments, but useful. After each quest, pick up a new flyer so you're always starting at 100%. For some reason I always 'left' vehicle before turning in, out of habit I suppose, and picked up a new one after picking up the next quest. Good advice from fellow players.

That friendly tauren at the tunnels, you'll probably find her early on, if you happen to be like me and take a while to figure out how to stay up out of the lava. Go to her and pick up a new mount if the one you're riding is less than half health, especially during waves 2 and 3 when the comets are falling.

If you die, you'll automatically be taken back to the top part near the quest giver. Pick up a new flyer and off you go. BUT, if you get disconnected (I got kicked a bunch of times), when you log on you will find yourself back at the camp. You'll have to mount up and fly back down and through the portal again. Minor pain in the butt, but hopefully you don't have to deal with that.

The reward - your choice between 2 pet birds.. and an achievement.. and of course gold and rep. So if pets and achievements are your thing, its totally worth doing. I agree its a pain in the butt, but.. at least the rewards are good. :)

I'm having the same problem now, works for a bit then only goes in one direction no matter where i point it, logged out and back in, it placed me outside the cave near to the shrine...gonna report it to a gm and see what happens, not gonna waste my time trying to complete if it keeps doing this.

Like many people have been saying, this quest is bugged.
It tends to stop flying in the direction you want it to and just goes in the same direction regardless of where you're facing.
I found one probable cause and a solution.

Cause: For some reason, this only happened to me if I tried steering the hippogryph while pressing flap (i.e. pressing my forward key/holding down both mouse buttons while pressing flap).

Solution: Don't press the forward or any strafing keys, just steer with your right mouse button and press flap.
Also, if you are stuck and can't dismount your bird while you're flying, simply unequip the lance. You MAY end up falling to your death but it's the only way I was able to dismount the hippogryph.

Absolutely, hands-down, without a doubt the most monumental turd Blizzard has shat out in its 20 years of existence. This quest not only makes me want to quit WoW altogether, it makes me want to quit gaming, computing, using devices that run on electricity, and living.

This quest is damned near impossible if you have anything but the greenest of lag or if you run at less than 20 FPS. What is this, GTA? At least in GTA one could turn down the graphics on-the-fly to get through the ridiculous rhythm challenges or poorly-synced time trials. The area in which this quest takes place, however, is saturated with flowing lava decals, bubbling polygons, and particle effects, and any changes that might make it playable on lower-end or integrated display adapters require a game restart.

Plus, the original 30+ year-old game wasn't very easy to control to begin with, and translating those controls to a 3D environment while mapping the action button by default to a key less than half an inch from the movement keys just seems like some cruel joke.

I imagine all those who say they loved this quest have desktops with dedicated graphics cards or gaming laptops with very reliable and fast internet connections, are contrarians, are masochists, or have their heads up Blizzard's hoohah.

P.S. Framerate wasn't so much of an issue for me, but my lag was yellow, egads, yellow I say - around 400 ms, and I could not only not control the mount as designed, nor flap back up to the quest start area (not an issue on the preceding quest without the buzzards flying around, but I couldn't even get off the damned chicken (by using the Leave Vehicle button or right-click menu) to use my hearthstone. So my character is stuck at the bottom of the lava pit for friggin ever.

ARRG! DO NOT do this game on either a full stomach or if feeling the effects of caffeine from a big coffee! *DIZZY DIZZY DIZZY*. This quest made me nauseated. I'm actually sweating right now from feeling queezy. Stupid quest!

I think BlackDalhia above ^^ said it best. They should legalize public stoning for the person who came up with the idea for this quest.

I see the next quest is the same thing and I'm REALLY contemplating giving up this quest line.

While I applaud Blizzard's experimenting with a different type of quest that isn't the 'go here, kill this, bring back this' thing, THESE QUESTS SUCK. I'm doing this on my fourth character, and it still hasn't gotten any easier. The controls still suck, the turning still sucks, and not even the pet at the end makes this frustration worth it. If you're even slightly laggy, you can pretty much forget about 'fun' altogether.

While I enjoyed the Trial of the Crusader style of fighting, this is just another sack of beans altogether. I'm still 30 minutes into the second part, and only have 7 killed. May heaven have mercy on the quest creator's soul, because if I ever get a hold of him, I sure won't.

LOVED IT! It was a 3D version on Joust. Who ever made this quest did a great job of making a 2D game 3D. The flying just takes a little getting use to and playing joust years ago in arcades and on my atari 2600 made it easy for me. I see some of the little kids didn't the refferance. I guess I'm showing my age : P

While I understand the nod to a old game, this is quest still has some of the worst in game mechanics and pretty much instantly trumped every other quest for the "worst quest in the game award." I'd almost rather get gy camped in wsg than do this quest again.

Resist the temptation to constantly switch targets. I found that if you stick to one target even if you overshoot it, it was better to stay on it than to switch. Ultimately it goes faster.

Also try to anticipate where they are going and fly there. Wayne Gretzky was once asked how he became great. He replied "Others skate to where the puck is. I skate to where the puck is going to be." Try to use that strategy here.

I can't leave this vehicle/dismount. I can't hearth. I can't take the portal back out, and I've been at this quest for forty-five minutes now. I can barely hit the buzzards, no matter how hard I try. The buzzards that I did hit, nothing happened to them. This is by far the most frustrating quest I've done. Not quite sure what to do, since I can't finish it, and I can't leave.

I was having a terrible time getting back on the ledge after completing Wave 2. I logged out to take a break and when I signed back in I was outside at the Shrine. Flew to the portal and walked over to Fardon, the quest giver and completed the quest. I must have spent 20 mins. trying to fly back to the ledge. I swear the "Flap" control was a random direction chooser. Finished Waves 1 and 2 by pure luck and tenacity.
Strange that I had no problem getting back to the ledge after Wave 1.

god every time i press flap it moves me backwards or to the side....im NOT steering or pressing anything else when i flap

What kind of gryphon are these that doesn't know to flap it's own wings? O.O

Anyway, I was experiening a terrible lag while doing this quest and what I did was fly in circles hiting the ones in my way. Also you can pick up another gryphon at the bottom if ya need.

I must disagree at the charm the others here are finding in this quest, personally I think it bites the big dragon winky. but, since you have to do it..here's my two cents.

since this mount flys like my uncle berny drives at new years here's my tip..land on a piece of land and pick a target, watch it's flight pattern and get as close as you can then when it comes over head fly up into it.

saved me alot of frustration

I found it easyer to hit the buzzards from below. Look as much upwards as you can, it will be ajusted downwards when you fly. When you have a buzzard in the upper edge of your view flap like the outcome depended on it. That made it for me.

Mad fun. GW blizzard. You do need low latency though. I switched on some torrents and tried it again with 300-400ms lag, and now understand some of the complaints here. It's much harder to kill the targets and avoid damage. Stay away from this quest unless you're on a fast connection.

Learning the mechanics is the point of this challenge. You must "unlearn what you have learned" about flying. The most useful info I got in previous comments was that the mount only goes forward and up in an arc, somewhat like a bunny hopping. You point the mount where you want it to go then flap to get there. Use arrow keys to turn your mount. The great part of these related quests is that you do not have to target anything - just point your mount where you want to land or at the flying birds and flap to get as close to them as you can. The birds died if I was close whether I was under or to the side or over, just close seemed to do it. I also had an easier time returning to base and the quest giver, who is very high up, by hopping from one tower to a higher one, and then to the ledge. After I got the hang of the "flying" I could go all the way from ground level to the ledge. If I can do it, so can you.

It doesn't really take that much time getting used to, honestly... It didn't take me long to get used to the first time (~8 minutes at the most) and the second time, which was just now on my DK alt, took ~5 minutes at the most. Was slightly challenging, but great fun! For those that didn't like the quests= :(
