This was a really sucky quest. The "flying" is so unprecise it's annoying. A hint for the egg wave: In the northeast corner near the "ground level", you'll see a platform with an NPC and 2 guardians that you can remount if you lose your other one. There are two alcoves behind them with 15-20 eggs between the two rooms.

If you make a mistake and dismount like I did, you can go over to location 36.3, 49.8 (at the bottom) and there is an NPC there with mounts for you to get back to the top. Hope this helped!

You have to equip the lance before you can get your mount. I forgot to do that and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get a mount. After that it's easy. For me the flap button came out automatically on the 4 key and all you have to do is keep spamming the key to keep aloft. Yeah, it's tricky, but there's dozens of vehicle quests in WoW, especially in WotLK that are way harder. All you have to do is keep your altitude, slack off if you're getting too high, and steer with the mouse. Just get close to one of the flying knights and you'll shoot him down. The egg part is the easiest, just land on a flat area and gather the eggs the flap back to the starting point. Now how hard was that?

I don't know, although (or maybe because) the controls for that thing are the most awefull ones in the game I had a lot of fun doing those 4 quests.
It's not very hard, it just makes you feel very very silly (and wonder whether your mount is drunk, stoned, or drunk *and* stoned). So if you can't laugh about yourself failing again and again at landing on a platform you will probably not enjoy this. If you can laugh at that sorta thing you will have the best time ever in WoW.
Great change from the kill & gather routine.

How do you fly UP? I keep running into the sides of the ledges. I point my bird up and flap like crazy, but it seems to just go horizontally and lose altitude. I hate the fact that with these chain quests, you can't just abandon it and do something else. Its the only quest I have left in Hyjal, and its hopeless. I've been at it an hour. Now I guess I go back to the only hopeless quest I have left in vash'jir. Or deepholm. GRRRR!

Lol, this type of quest easily justifies buying a Nostromo N52 controller. Simply make a macro that, in my case at least depresses the "4" key every second until you hit the controller key again. Select "Repeat Macro Until Key Pressed Again" with a 1 second delay between actions. Press the key to gain altitude, hit it again to lose attitude. Then relatively simple matter of steering with mouse to attempt to hit targets.

This is difficult because of the dodgy physics involved. If the air is indeed denser, it would support you better and fewer flaps necessary to stay airborne. However if it is superheated it would be thinner and thus the opposite.

After Cata first came out, I did this quest on my hunter. It sucked royally. There were no comments yet on the quest, nothing to go by. I didn't realise I could actually steer the mount, so it was all happening totally by chance. I absolutely HATED this quest, understandably. It took me the better part of an hour to complete and get the little jousty companion. I was PISSED. A week or so later a friend of mine had to do it, and by then comments were up. I was like OMG seriously? I could have STEERED the mount? So, today on my Druid it came that time. The quests were in front of me. I sat there on the bird and contemplated. I felt unwilling. But I thought no, give it a try now that you know you can steer. So I did. Pain in the butt at first until I got the hang of it, and then grudgingly I started to feel like it was actually fun! And it was fun, because I learned how to steer it and how to finish each wave in less than five minutes. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Im still not willing to say it's a great quest because Im still kinda irritated from the first time I had to do it, but if that hadn't happened, I'd say it's pretty fun. Mash the 4 button for flapping and steer by holding down both mouse buttons with the other hand. Made in the shade.

Bugged and/or WORST quest ever! No matter what I did, the mount only wanted to fly one direction. AT THE WALL ! ! ! I don't care how many mouse buttons you have or are holding. When you press the <Flap> button, there is no changing direction. It turns to the wall and staying there until you stop flapping. By the way, riding in lava or on the ground the mount works normal and will not cause you to loose HP. Leaving vehicle will warp you back to top shelf at quest giver.

WOW the creator of "Flight in the Firelands" must be blackmailing Blizzard or he/she submitted the quest at gunpoint. I simply can't see how else this quest made it into the game. This quest stinks so badly that I'd compare it to Scotch Taping a Feather to a Rock and handing it over to the closest Top Gun Pilot while saying "Won't you take it for a spin". The English language does not contain adjectives that properly convey the godlike awesome suckyness that has been presented here, but then again maybe the answer is just as simple a nepotism. I picture a NASA think tank challenged with how to make the suckiest quest ever and they delivered the space shuttle i.e a rock with wings.as the answer. Why does blizzard worry a about nerfing druids when they could have fixed this quest instead. We are witness to a very Poor sense of priorities indeed !

One of the main things here is that those with a latency problem (eg, on satellite internet or computers below recommended specs) will find this quest much much more difficult, if not entirely impossible. My only suggestion for solving that at this time is to try it from another computer/connection.

Am I the only one who noticed the quest text doesn't make sense? Superheated air wouldn't be more dense. It would be less dense. Either way the quest would work. Your bird would have to flap harder in less dense air to create the same lift.

But alas, it's a video game and I probably shouldn't be reading this much into it. Happy questing!

For those of us who didn't play Joust--

Flapping: My big problem was that my snotty blue @$$ kept telling me "That spell isn't ready yet! That's still recharging!" IGNORE IT. Keep tapping the key so it sounds like a parched hamster going at the water bottle. Steer with the mouse.

Killing: This is much like the quests where you're on an autopiloted vehicle--except that you're the pilot--just keep flying around and about, try heading toward the buzzards, and you'll get them. It's really a lot of fun after you stop the big hate to Blizz for doing this and just la-la-la until you hit enough of them.

Eggs: Fly down to the lowest level (lava) and there are tons of them. All you need to do is swim from outcrop to outcrop--no bird maneuvering necessary.

This quest is horrible. All I do is fly into walls no matter where I steer the damn thing. Tried to dismount and I can't. Tried to hearthstone out and I can't. Figured maybe if I abandoned the quest and removed the fire lance maybe it would boot me from the mount.....it did not. I think there is a serious problem with this quest.

Most Stupid Quest EVER!
this quest is fu**ing bugged. it pissed me off like hell. in the end after completing the quest, since i couldnt get to the fricking quest giver, i HSed and turned in with normal lovely flying mount...
seriously blizzard really did a &*!@ty job here.

Bugged for me too. I kept going into walls, or going into the ceiling with zero forward propulsion. I just kept getting blown backward. By luck alone I landed where one the flags were. NOTHING. I didn't get quest credit.
By sheer luck again, I was able to land on a platform and walk up next to a flag, once more, no credit.
I tried going back to the start platform, nothing was there, no quest giver, no lance holders, no hippogryphs, nothing was there and I couldn't leave through the portal.
I couldn't even get off the vehicle. Logging out put me back at the circle of stones (where you talked to the Ancient's spirit), and flying back, I couldn't get in the portal until I dropped the quest
I was told by tech to delete the WTF, Cache and Interface folders, I did and once more No credit for getting to the flag. I was able to get to a different flag, and no credit for getting to the stupid flipping flag yet again.
And being as though this is a bottleneck quest, I can't leave it until later, and do other quests in this zone, because there are none until you do this quest.
It's a stupid quest, with stupid mechanics, fuzzy physics, and on top of that, glitched.
Games are supposed to be fun, and challenging, not frustrating to the point of wanting to throw your computer through the nearest window.

There is indeed something wrong with this quest. Every time I flap I am forced straight north. I can't get anywhere like that. at first it seemed to be working ok, but then it freaked out. When I try to leave vehicle I am frozen for a few seconds, suggesting it is trying to leave the vehicle, but in the end nothing happens. I finally figured out that if you log out and log back in you will be back at the Shrine of Aviana. I guess I won't be doing this quest right now.

Really stupid quest....it is bugged.... I read all the comments here but there is no way of controlling the bird, not even using the two mouse buttons and the keyboard for flapping....it just goes in one direction, to the wall.... after that there is no way of returning to the starting point... it will keep going to the wall no matter what you do... and I can not "dismount" from the vehicle..... completely bugged.....

Also, there is a npc down there, but there are no additional mounts...actually....there are a couple of mini caves nearby and the bugged bird goes in that direction only....

I completed the first one only, landing on the green flag....after MANY times, not understanding what was going on, and ending in the wall all the time.... then logging out and back in, to start again at the platform with the quest giver....really annoying..

I can not even imagine how to complete the second challenge....to kill the birds.....without no way of controlling my bird...

Like many people have been saying, this quest is bugged.
It tends to stop flying in the direction you want it to and just goes in the same direction regardless of where you're facing.
I found one probable cause and a solution.

Cause: For some reason, this only happened to me if I tried steering the hippogryph while pressing flap (i.e. pressing my forward key/holding down both mouse buttons while pressing flap).

Solution: Don't press the forward or any strafing keys, just steer with your right mouse button and press flap.
Also, if you are stuck and can't dismount your bird while you're flying, simply unequip the lance. You MAY end up falling to your death but it's the only way I was able to dismount the hippogryph.

I tried your tip (Snowbulbmin), it seemed to work for a second or two...then I was against the wall again.....maybe I missed the tempo and hit the flap while maneuvering? dunno, but I simply left the place....tired of bugged quests.... There is another bugged one in Hyjal, something about flying in a dragon and spitting acid over enemies...and killing other dragons..... Sometimes the enemies are there...some time they are not.... and one of the dragons you are supposed to fly on is sitting too high and you can not mount on it....(the arrow is greyed).....

Something went really wrong with many quests and the latest patches..... this patches mentality is going to ruin the game, its a slippery road, nothing gets properly done and bugs accumulate one on top of the other....

I couldn't even find any of this on the latest "known issues"....lol....so I figure it is never going to be fixed...

I found this fairly simple to get the hang of. It works just like Joust as others have said, as well as the old-school Lander-style games. It's all about maintaining the right amount of thrust. It's not nearly as annoying as some make out, and certainly not as annoying as the Ogri-la relic's emanation daily.

I HATE THIS QUEST! It is the most frustrating of any quest that I have done. I tried everything that was suggested here and they were good suggestions, but I still could not control that bird. I never played Joust or any video game like it. I thought I was not going to get in the Firelands because of it. However when I finally after 2 hours of trying did manage to complete the first quest, I got the helped the elder and was able to go on from there. At least Blizzard gave us some leeway with it.

Really worst quest in my opinion. I have pain in my hands and this just make then ache. as it is this game is hard on the mouse hand and this quest makes it even worse. Trying to keep flying wasn't a problem but steering, which seems to float all over and not hitting the targets was problematic.

I really dont give a @$%! is this is a homage to another game, it plain sux. wave after wave.. Blah!

Don't get me wrong, if you want sub-games like this then fine. The Plants vs Zombies quest is a lot of fun. I just don't think these mini games should be an integral part of the storyline quests.

First of all, I finished wave one, landed to get my bearing so I could see which way to fly to turn in the quest, and the bird dismounted me and flew away. Inside the hatchery you cannot mount up, and there is no ground path back to the quest giver...essentialy, I had to hearth out and fly back to the fire portal.
There really should be a way to recall the aviana guardian while the quest is still active.

Personally, I took a look at the "superior" quest chain rewards and I don't think they are worth it...so I plan to abandon.

Count me in as one of those who totally hated this quest chain. I use a trackball due to a wrist injury and steering was impossible. There was just no way to hit what I aimed at... The graphics were not that good that I could tell I was on level with my target. I did find out one good thing. If you log out in the middle of it, you end up at the Shrine of Aviana when you log back in. No need to hearth out (which I did once, too.) Perhaps those who played Joust developed a skill-set the rest of us have not and certainly weren't given the time to develop before this was dropped on us.

WOW should at least have given a "return to the ledge" button or something.

Yes this quest is a huge pain in the a$$ when it comes to the flying part. Once you get use to it though its alot of fun :) If you get impatient really easily then dont do this quest haha! You may end up breaking something!

I read every ones comments at how bad and horrible this quest is. I have to admit though that I had minimal problems completing each phase.

Phase 1 is just to get the hang of flying. There is a trick to flying these mounts. Use the 4 button to flap the mounts wings because you'll need your right click mouse the steer. The trick to steering is to face the direction you want to go ... then click 4. If you need to turn into another direction it's the same. Use right click mouse to face the direction you want to go then click 4. If you stop clicking 4 you will lose altitude. Click 4 a lot and you will gain altitude.

Phase 2 and 3 are the same basically. All you have to do is run into the enemy fliers. In phase 3 make sure you watch out for the falling em-blazed boulders. They tend to do your mount a bit of damage.

Phase 4 with the eggs is easiest. Don't try to fly over the eggs to destroy them like the quest says to. Instead, the easiest way to destroy the eggs is to land and stand on them. If you have a cluster of three or four eggs close together, stand in the center and all three or four eggs will be destroyed simultaneously.

You can repeat this quest as many times as you want. I didn't find it that hard so I did it again for fun.

This quest caused me to freak out, throw my keyboard and put a scratch on the side of my monitor. NOT WORTH IT. I almost had a freaking stroke I got so angry.

If you can't seem to mount one of the birds despite having grabbed and equipped a lance - check if you maybe (like me) equipped your Argent Tournier lance by mistake.
