It can be somewhat tough for melee dps, as even though you may kill fast, tons start spawning. The captains are a high priority as they will heal the other mobs nearby, then the large plague beings (whose name escapes me at the moment), then the smaller mobs. If you have any form of taunting ability (including death grip and dark command, though I imagine others like misdirect etc would work), use it on mobs that are attacking the pillar. You will get them on you, but you're healing a heck of a lot so long as you're near the flag.

Once Halof spawns, focus fire on him until he's dead, and you win.

This quest is highly susceptible to cross faction griefing. All it takes is another faction to be standing in the AoE of the group doing the quest, and main quest NPC will attack the AoEer.

Interstingly enough. If you don't interfered and just let the other faction complete the quest, while you're within the radius of the buff, you'll get the credit as well.

the spawning goes on for a while, gets kinda boring >.> like someone else said as soon as you see halof spawn (he's easy to spot, a bit bigger than anything else) focus everything on him -- once he dies, it all despawns.

Rogue Plan:
After failing this quest three times after hitting 80 I went about it this way (I am undergeared as my rogue was an ALT until WotLK):
1. Blow all combo generation moves (SS, Muti, Hemo) on Captains and the large hunchbacks
2. Pool energy and auto attack the little mobs, don't waste energy here (really important)
3. Use everything on the ending boss as well as evasion half way through. Don't forget your trinkets!

If you're having trouble the banner dying before it seems like you get a chance to hit anything: move down the hill to their spawn point. It appears that when the Scourge cross a certain line, they agro directly on the banner and short of taunting, nothing can peel them off. Instant dead banner. However, if you tag them when they spawn, they will stay on you the whole time - even when the elite shows up at the end.

this currently appears to be bugged

after about 15 minutes of fighting constant spawns, the npcs (except the ones throwing fires) despawned so did the flag, even though they were on full hp

i lost me damage bonus and healing and got squashed by 2 elites

never saw anything except the 3 basic mobs spawn

the skeletons stun and heal, beware

After tries with bugs i finally figured out what to do to ''unbug'' it.
Basically you need to fight the mobs right between the banner and the spawn points of those mobs, if you keep killing the mobs just like that eventually a black one will appear which you have to kill making it the completion of this quest.

Any other position will bug the quest.

Well ive tried 10 times and just cant do it as a muti rogue..the energy pooling idea helped but im still short of energy to deal with it when there are 5+ all at once...I got the boss to spawn once but lack of any energy just stops me from doing it :(....

Quest works, but you have to stay up at the top of the hill. Don't engage until they get to the top. Otherwise it will despawn. Eventually a boss type will show up and you'll get completion. Takes 5-8 minutes.

Worst quest ever. About 10 tries, when horde doesn't steal the boss mob it just doesn't give credit for the quest.

After the hand in to the guy in the shed you are given another quest that takes you back to where you had the battle, not as questhelper currently states

Co-Ords are 80.72 the area had changed now including a flight path and more quests

Edit: Figured it out as a hunter...

Before the boss, just use volley for everything. Once the boss comes, pop your trinkets, bestial wrath, rapid fire, everything. Get some solid aggro on the boss beside the banner. Once you have aggro, begin volleying again around the banner. You will likely lose boss aggro again so use your instant shots and killshot if he's below 20% then begin volley again to stop the other mobs from destroying it. Took me about 10 tries but finally got it.

Well I did it! But was very sneaky I just parked my rogue there and waited about an hour while browsing online and a gang of horde came along and as they started i put my banner up and got stuck in with them and it worked :)...

Finally got halof to spawn today..and then hundreds of mobs spawn and kill the flag..this is impossible as a rogue, don't bother unless you have someone to help you.

From what i know and have seen, and i have done this quest about 25 times, the main guy on the ram needs spawn with the mob group. Then an event where he tells the peasants to burn the bodies hanging in the trees needs to happen for him to interact in the battle itself.

If the NPC on the ram interacts in the battle it should work as intended, thats why everytime you whisper a GM they cant find a problem with this quest.

So, try to wait until noone is around, Start the quest, follow the events, and bring more then one persons to kill them fast enough so you let the quest bug itself in any other way.

If the event isnt happening or the npc isnt spawning you can just leave the place and come back later cause you wont complete the quest.

Abandon or put off this quest immediately as a pre-80 rogue. Do not even attempt it unless someone is assisting you - trust me, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation.

Quest is bugged for me i fought 36 minutes straight untill i gave up, the lich king stopped saying something 30 mins ago :/

The npc attacked me suddenly i was also spamming aoe but there was no cross faction standin there, i just ran away and when icame back he was green again, this happened like 2 mintues before i gave up so the quest didn't bug because of that

Found out something interesting today by accident... it doesn't matter who is doing the quest. As today I saw an alliance guy doing the quest (I am on a pve server), so popped down to give him a hand to clear it faster and get on with my own attempt - and got credited for the completion of the quest same as he did at the end.

For those without coords, Crusader's Pinnacle is directly west of the horizontal space between Argent and Vanguard on the map. It's a little hard to describe.

Or perhaps if you prefer, directly south of the northernmost tip of the road leading out of the Argent Vanguard camp. It's in the hills a bit.

I found this bugged as well. Heres my observation:

The tattered banner just in front of the argent banner seems to be the "line" that you cant cross, otherwise the quest becomes glitched.

My solution was to simply stay back, maybe 3 feet in front of the banner, and let the NPC's fight. A few of them died, but eventually the boss spawned and after maybe 5 minutes or so of him trashing the remaining battle priests, he made his way up to the banner. Grab him quick and the banner wont get aggro. After that there will most likely be a ton of adds still, but same answer - AoE them quick and you should be fine, the heals will keep you alive and you can focus on the big guy.

As for the aggro problem itself my only guess as to that would be (and keep in mind i have no support, this is just a theory) that the banner itself issues the massive heals, thus creating aggro - much like a healer in an instance.

I suppose if you WANTED to count it as support, the theory could be propped up by the fact that since the banner doesnt heal NPC's, and your not fighting (thus dont need heals) by my method above, the banner effectively creates no aggro (much like many of the dps in instances :P). Grabbing the boss before you need heals allows you to build up aggro before the banner, securing your victory.

PS - took me four tries, and about 2 hours :(

I got this quest to "unbug"... If you see two of the helpers down the hillside a bit just sitting there where the mobs spawn and nothing is happening I got on my flying mount, ran through the mobs, dragged them up the hill to the banner, killed them all and the boss appeared shortly after..

Don't know if this was what did it but I was able to complete the quest after it bugged out..

Just did the quest by fighting all the mobs at the bottom of the hill but within the range of the buff after dozens of tries. The NPC helpers did not engage and the boss did not spawn but I still got credit after about 5 minutes of fending off the mobs.

I'm a rogue, and just did this quest a few times and came to a few conclusions. Eventually completed it with ease:
*Stay back, the argent guys can take care of themselves.
*If mobs are on the flag, kill them.
*The Lich King likes to yell.
*When LK yells "Lay down your arms and surrender your souls," that is when the boss spawns. If The Lich King yells that, and the guy doesn't spawn, you bugged it. Leave and come back.
*Running forward seems to make the battle last forever and eventually causes the NPCs to depsawn.

Be patient, and follow the quest instructions by protecting that flag! NOT by running forward! :D

I did this last night as a lvl 77 warlock, I read all the above and followed what it said and it was cake!

I planted the flag and stood back and watched the NPC kick A$$, some of the elite mobs made it thru the NPC's but they were burned down easy. After a few waves of this like 3 of the elites made it to the flag and I destroyed them (unlimited mana btw), then the boss spawned and the NPC's once again tore them up I tagged the boss and burned him down, not one mob touched me!

In short;
1. Plant flag.
2. Stay back let NPC deal with mobs
3. Tag boss and burn down.
4. Complete quest and receive loot!

Very easy as a Boomkin, just put on your crit gear, spam wrath, and watch the 25k+ hits fly.

I stood out in front of the NPCs a bit and the only ones that got through there were the plague bringers with their 31k health. The NPCs easily finished off what 3k health I left them with before they got to the flag though.

You can kill the ghoul like creatures as they come up out of the ground, don't wait for a full animation spawn.

Just completed it on my human death knight on Dentarg, had the help of two horde players... a /ty out to Avilyn and Dragonhawk.

But I had a completely different problem... that prick Gustav is not where he is supposed to be.

EDIT: Found him, if you are using the quest helper addon... don't trust the location it's showing you... he's in the outhouse thing Northwest of the base.

When you hear Arthas yelling "Lay down your arms and surrender your souls" is when the big guy SHOULD spawn.

For me I just had to start the event a second time for it to work.

Also, to all the people who are saying that it is too hard to solo, i managed fine. You don't even need to do anything, the NPC's take care of it all.

The Pile of Crusader Skulls is at 80.71, just before the slope that is next to the little hut.

I am not quite sure how repeatable this is, but I began the quest by planting the banner and had to afk before the last wave. I left combat and just had my character hover close to the banner on his flying mount. After I came back the quest was showing as complete. If there isn't much competition in the area, this may be an alternative that will allow you to avoid the bugs in this quest.

This quest is buggy as hell. When I first planted my banner, I was alone. 10 minutes in, still no quest mob, but 3 or 4 alliance had shown up, and were killing mobs down at the spawn point. great.

So this goes on and on and eventually my banner disappears. No one had seen the quest mob. An alliance comes and plants his banner, and the mindless slaughter continues.

After a bit more time, for no reason I can comprehend, I put my banner down again. INSTANTLY the quest mob appeared, at the top of the ramp (thank god, all the alli were down the hill so I got the tag). Killed, done, event stopped.

why did people find this hard? im a 79 balance drood and all i did was stand next to the banner and spam <tab> Wrath. it hits 10k each mob. i love the buff tho! i hit 50k Starfire XD (i had trink up)

Definately one of my favorite Quests. Sure, after the 20th wave of Mobs, it gets a kind of repetitive, but it still really fun.

Here's how you do it:

Drop the Banner on the Bones
Wait as the Dwarves and Crusaders come and burn down the trees and stuff
Slay the 25(ish) waves of Scourge that come up the mountain
Slay Halof the Deathbringer when he spawns
Return to Father Gustav

I was doing this quest for about 25 minutes and it didn't stop. At some point the Lich King stopped speaking, but the mobs kept spawning. I died when the npcs helping me despawned leaving me to deal with 7-8 mobs =/

I think that if you have any trouble with this quest then it must be bugged. Your elite buddies should be making pie out of the mobs that spawn, you get an epic buff that gives you crazy damage and mp5 regen. Eventually the last mob spawns and you tag him and the elites finish him off. All in all easy quest and xp.

Plant your flag and stand back. You get 4 NPC's that come and help you. You really only need to let them handle all the adds, maybe catch the few that sneak past them. Eventually a mob that kinda looks like a nordic warrior spawns in the middle of all the fighting. Tag him and enjoy your completed quest. Holy priest, lvl 80.

I did have to do this one twice. You get unlimited mana as a caster. I made the mistake of standing at the flag and just spamming Holy Nova...noticed a shadowy figure start to spawn..holy nova...it despawned and bugged the first try. Recommend you do NOT aoe on the group of mobs your NPC's are fighting until the named one spawns fully.

Second attempt, stood back and just singel target wanded. Your NPC's will be just fine on there own. Mob spawned, tagged him then went all out on the group with my NPC's.

this quest shows, that blizzard didn't teste having more than one char on your account. because of the zones changing, you have to delete the cache-files in your wow-directory before switching between chars, who have different status on quests and zones.

I think you have to do at least some damage. I tried the technique of flying above the banner within buff range and let the npc's fight. the boss showed up finally and they beat him, the waves stopped, but i never got completion.

The second time, I just fought a little ways down the path. easy fight for 77 hunter. elites go down easy.

btw, it looks like the npc's heal the banner if it ever gets hit.

This was incredibly simple as a frost mage. I just stood by the flag and spammed frostbolts and the like until the boss appeared, burned him down. Much like the Battle for UC, you get a couple god buffs that let you keep casting without runnin outta mana, or dying from hits.

My 80 DK planted the banner and stood by it, letting the NPCs handle the mobs. If a mob got through to the banner it was an easy kill for my DK, even the so-called elites. The boss eventually spawned with a few adds, but nothing difficult happened and there was no reason to avoid the few battles that took place by the banner. Thanks to all the comments before that advised staying out of the fray for the most part -- it worked.

Just finished this one.. at first, no problems.. then game hung, had to kill game via task manager & reload.. fight was still in progress thankfully, killed final mob & got credit

It's entirely possible that this quest was hopelessly busted when the comments above were made, and in the time since then the quest was tweaked and the folks who make QuestHelper figured out how to handle phasing, but here's what I observed.

Tirion (the quest giver) and Gustav (the guy you hand it in to when you're done) both appear exactly where they're supposed to be given my progress through the zone at this point. The QuestHelper arrow and icons worked as intended.

When the banner is planted in the pile of skulls, a group of 7 or 8 friendlies spawns 30 yards or so down the hill and charges up to help me defend the banner. A couple of them have dialog lines, and a few masons set about burning up the remnants of scourge infestation on the plateau behind me. After a short wait (10-15 seconds?) scourge mobs start spawning down the hill and charging up to eat our brains.

Initially, I decided to see if the "ima go make me a sammie" solution (hovering nearby on a flying mount and letting my helpful allies do my dirty work) would work, but I joined the fray when a couple of ghouls started picking at the banner. I don't think I gained aggro at any point during the fight, despite using death and decay, icy touching mobs at random (ew!), and making liberal use of pestilence and blood boil. The mobs died quickly and I never dropped below 95% health... if I even got hit at all.

The ghoulies have about 11k hp and the bigger baddies have about 30k hp, but none of them paid much attention to me. I didn't notice the last guy's hp... he died too quickly for it to matter anyway.

I did not need to worry about getting aggro on the last guy in order to get quest credit.

The whole thing lasted maybe 10 mins, counting several seconds after each mob of mobs died before the next batch spawned and came up the hill. 'cuz yea... they died that fast.

Granted, I'm playing ezmode (death knight) but this particular quest could have been completed wearing a full twill set.

Oh, and this was the night before a big patch so everybody was lagging and complaining about how the world was broken. No problems at all. Maybe I'm lucky, but it's far more likely that the stuff that was buggy has been fixed.

This just happened to me. I was in my flying mount watching a human mage do the quest, to do it after her. And when she finish I got the quest done... Didn't even knew this was possible. That was silly of blizzard to let that happen and haven't fixed it. Or like Blizzard would say "working as intended".

Well I hate to think that I cheated, but I flew over to the spot and things were going down. Couldn't really see the pile of skulls and couldn't figure out why I seemed to be buffing. Pop up to a hover and a quick check of wowhead. I'm reading about Arthas yelling "lay down your arms", when low and behold, I see it pop up in red over on my wow screen. About the time I think WTF, quest complete. I really wasn't even really that close but evidently ninja'd some other toons kill. I guess quest soloed, not a single blow landed.

Did this as a lvl 79 Tauren Warrior full enchanted cobalt tank set with melee. Planted the flag on the pile of skulls mounted up and hovered over the banner and watched the NPCs handle all the mobs. When the LK sent in the final boss I dropped down and tagged him. Hit him with charge and threw everything I had at him. Don't sweat the lesser add maintain beating on the boss. Try to stay behind him and let the NPCs draw the aggro. HP hardly dropped at all. Took about 2 minutes to drop the boss. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Something weird I noticed (81 Alliance enh shammy).

Just after I picked this quest up, a Horde DK (79 I think) dropped by the little camp and tried to gank me - probably for his PVP daily.

Now I have no freaking clue what happened (forgot to check combat log), but within about 5 seconds the DK dropped dead(er) and I got an HK. Didn't press a single button.

Possibility 1: Killed by NPCs (but they were friendly to him, since I saw him apparently turning in a quest). Will Crusade NPCs aggro on you if you try to gank someone near them?
Possibility 2: This quest gives you some kind of superpowered buff which multiplies your damage. Is it possible that my Lightning Shield triggered off his attack, critted and triggered my Thunder Capacitor to hit him? I don't think a shield orb, even with the buff, would do enough damage to kill a player outright. But IIRC the buff says it only works on Scourge in the area of Crusader's Pinnacle.

So I'm sitting here scratching my head thinking: that's an awfully small pile of skulls for everyone to be all upset about it. What, maybe 10 to 15 skulls tops? Whoopie. Suddenly it occurs to me who we're talking about, the Scourge, the undead living dead daylight nightmares of insano madness straight from the mind of Rob Zombie himself! Okay, that last part about Rob Zombie isn't true, but it could be. The Scourge take the living, kill them, and bring them back to life as the muto-undead. So we're lucky that there were any skulls at all to be found in a pile, and those skulls were probably there from failed conversion experiments on humans in the first place. Which is all really sickeningly creepy, when ya really stop and think about it.

Oh well, there's my theory about the relatively small size of the pile of skulls that all the NPCs are in an uproar about.

The Battle For Crusaders' Pinnacle

Venture to Crusaders' Pinnacle and use the Blessed Banner of the Crusade atop the Pile of Crusader Skulls. Defend the banner against Scourge attack until the land atop the pinnacle is sanctified and then return to Father Gustav at the Valley of Echoes in Icecrown.

This banner is like no other, <name>. It carries with it a powerful blessing, able to sanctify large tracts of blighted land.

You must take it northwest, through the Breach, to an area the Scourge have mockingly named Crusaders' Pinnacle. Plant the banner atop the skulls of our fallen brethren at Crusaders' Pinnacle and defend it against attack. Once the land is sanctified, return to Father Gustav.

Go now, <name>. Hold no fear in your heart.
