This quest is a HUGE pain, especially if you're a fire mage, as the mob WILL resist at LEAST 50% of your damage. It takes twice as long to kill these buggers, and the drop rate isn't very nice either.
Oh, and the rewards for you (as a fire mage) are crap too.

42,76 is also a good hot spot for these. drop rate isn't one per, but there are far worse drop rates in WOW. stats show ~25% and I got a bti better than that.

This quest can be done in unison with Army of the Black Dragon and Overlord Mok'Morokk's Concern.

And by "can", I mean "should", because the drop rate on the hearts and tongues is horrendous.

I hate it when I come to this site and some cry baby is whining about slow drop rates. If you are level enough to do this quest, every kill I got from 219 to 230 XP with my 40 lock, when I turned in the quest I got 6850xp and I haven't done a quest yet that gives me extra xp for doing it quick the bonus is the slow drop rate and the xp. The cords are good and it took me about 30 mins to complete, about average for the WoW quest.

Quest has now changed to 7 of each, makes it considerably easier and worth it now!

A good place to farm is just below the new goblin down

Also now that the town is there you can fly straight back to the village, saves you time

I killed a couple of the Searing Hatchetlings and got one of each item and thought to myself this seems too easy.

I continued grinding them and told myself, If I dont have more than half by the time I've collected all my Wrymtail for Catch a dragon by the tail I'll quit it.

I didn't recieve another drop in about 20 kills.

A Note for Fire Mages: Frostbolt, Arcane Missiles, Frost Nova, Step back, Arcane Missiles. If they're not dead after that a quick cone of cold should do the trick.
A little bit mana inefficent but thats what we have free water for eh? ;)

Right around 47,82 is the best place. Most of the searing hatchlings drop heart and tongue

You'll find a lot near the Stonemaulruins and South of Mudsprocket.

As a firemage, do the following:
1. Frostbolt from the max range
2. Arcane Missiles while it comes over
3. When its close, cast Cone Of Cold immidiately, then turn around and start running away.
4. When youre 2-4 yards away, cast Frost Nova and run away 10-20 more yards.
5. Cast Arcane Missiles again.

If its still alive, try to slow it by using Forstbolt, Frost Nova, or Cone Of Cold, then run away and cst arcane missiles and repeat this until it dies. Yes, it does eat lots of mana. But it worked just fine for me when I was doing all those "dragon" quests.

Well i didnt get around to this quest until 39 as a protadin.

I did fine for the most part except when i was getting mobbed by like 3-4...These guys mage way to much.

Not to hard. Drop rates are still horrible.

Altho I did get on my first kill. Pretty sweet imo.
Gonna try to sell it 500g. Then go down by 100's.

For this quest, go to the very southern end of the marsh, near the mountains. More dragons and less elites there.

Watch out for the elite Firebane dragons that patrol nearby. Had two spawn right behind me. There's also some elite crocs nearby, just gotta be carefull where you go.

The base of the mountain range to the south of Dustwallow is loaded with them from east to west. All warnings about patrolling elites and crocs are valid.

The drop rate was good, sometimes a Mob would drop one of each quest item.

I also picked up 6 Small Flame Sacs, which was cool.

Best of all. The total xp on turn in, plus the two "Go tell another NPC about this" trips was 6070xp, as a lvl 45 warrior. Cool!

Quest reward was only worth 35s, but the xp made this more than worthwhile.

Next quest in series pits you against those elites we avoided, so I'll wait a few levels before I come back and do it.

I don't know if this changed with the recent patches--but there are now 2 patrols to be aware of. Coords are correct for location of Searing Whelps and Hatchlings.

Thought I had completed the quest because the quest told me i had 15 of each items needed. But, according to my inventory, i had 15 searing tongues and only 6 searing hearts. Now, I can't seem to get anymore hearts because it is saying complete. I tried abandoning the quest and getting it again and it is the same prob. Had a problem with another quest as well in STV.

I just completed this with a lvl 42 Mage.

I had to recharge after 2 mobs so it took quite a while.

I felt the drop rate was OK probably arround 40%. With some dropping both heart and tounge.

Do be carefull there are the elite patrols, elite crocks and regular crocks to watch out for.

Know where you are standing and watch the patterns of the patrolling elites.

So, confirming around 46,81 has the best location.

Easy quest if you watch the pattern of the patrols.

Did it at lvl 45, MAGES have it soooo easy!
Cast Fire Ward at the beginning of every fight and your hardly take any damage.

Very sweet quest!

Very low Drop rate. Seems I've been killing those bats for 2 hours and have 7 / 9 quest items..

I'm a lvl42 Elemental Shammy and am having NO problems with this Quest solo, Nor the sister accompanying quests of "Identifying the Brood" and "Army of the Black Dragon"...

watch out for the patrols... I read here everyone saying there are Elite mobs. I haven't seen ONE. is it perhaps Im a lvl 42? (Quest is still Yellow btw).. Regardless, there are no Elites here for me. If you do get caught by the patrols, I've killed them each time.

I use "purge" to purge the patrols of their buffs and Windfury w/ Flurry Axe ( 3 or 4 extra hits when it procs and Earth Shock / Frost Shock..

Oh, and the partols WILL find you, they have radar..LOL

p..s I just have to throw one lst comment in here. At the beginning of the quest the drop rate was, I would say, a meager 5%... middle of quest it was about a 20%.. Near the end..when I had 10 and 10 of each the Drop Rate was nearly 80 - 95%! So be patient peeps, it does get better! ;-)

only thing is with nonelites they don't drop very much nice stuff anymore. I had a friend who picked up a Gutripper there when they were elites.

You'll find the whelps all the way around the ruins just on the outskirts. My 42 Druid had no prob handling two or three at a time, as said before watch for the patrols, otherwise a walk in the park.

The drop rate wasnt very good for me. I'm a 41 warlock and i was helped by a 45 warrior. Il say after this quest was done and handed in, i was 50,000 closer to lvl 42. The best grinding quest i have done to date

44,66 is a good place to start..... theirs abt 15 here then move around from island to island..... most islands have one but plan on spending at least 1 hour.... if scouts are comming anywhere near you just take them be for they come up behind you... lvl 43 Hunter

i found about a 40% drop rate on both the tongues and the hearts.

I didn't get a single quest drop off the hatchlings only the whelps so don't waste time with the hatchlings

Doing this at the moment.. got all 15 tounges but only 9 hearts... not an even drop rate
I suggest going AS FAR SOUTH of the ruins as you can, and just kill the whelps =D

Both quest items drop off both hatchlings and whelps. Confirmed today, August 25, 2007. At 15 tongues though, I only had 7 hearts. Heart drop rate sucks...

The location is simple, go out the back door (south entrance) of the new village Mudsprocket and they are right back there. It took me all of 15 minutes to get them all and got 6450 exp for a lvl 41 Shaman. There is also another quest that requires picking up a herb, can't remember the name but they are all over there. The quest was from Mudsprocket so you will be able to kill two birds with one stone. When you have that quest the herbs will glitter for you. Hope this helps and Happy Hunting :)

Ifound all of my hearts and tongues allover the place if found my hearts at stonemaul runins and the hearts at wyrmbog but dount get to the close to noxius lair because then you wont find many there unless you keep heading that area

41,75 is a way better spot, I got all the items in about 30 min. Just look for them around moutain, and south of that point. You wont have to worry much about crocs there are 2 patrols so watch out for them

Not that horrible. I have been XP grinding this area since dinging 39 and I am now close to dinging 41 as an Orc Hunter.

The Elite Crocs have high AR but were soloable just using basic pet/hunter aggro switching (to bandage) at 39, with some decent health potions as backup.

Your pet can't tank this sort of damage though so the usual pet tanking / hunter using bow won't work - you have to share the tanking.

The Firemane patrols can be a problem but don't chase far so are easily outrun. I lost the pet a few times but most times both of us made it to safety when they added to the fight.

The actual whelps and hatchlings are easy as and they have some nice drops. One dropped a Dark Whelping (rare pet) which fetched me 95 gold this morning on the AH.

But yeah - if your after a quick quest then this isn't the one. But if your after a quest to do as your levelling in the area then it is just bonus XP.

Just hug the southern zonewall. Over half of it is crawling with the whelps and hatchlings and only 1 or 2 very easely avoidable elite patrols.

Thankfully the other (larger) Dragonkin in the area are no longer elites which makes completing this quest far simpler than it used to be, in addition you can do Army of the Black Dragon and Overlord Mok'Morokk's Concern at the same time for triple quest completion at less effort. Not to mention the excellent XP you'll get killing every single mob in the area.

I also believe the drop rate has been improved as I haven't encountered any problems in that regard. At least one of the required items dropping from each Whelp/Hatchling.

This has got to be one of the worst quests ever. *fumes*

The drop rate is appalling, so schedule lots of time for it, as it is going to take a *long* time to get the 30 quest items.

To find the creatures you need to dodge round the elite crocodiles in the waterways.

The dragons aren't too bad, they cast a nasty firebolt spell though.

The worst thing about it though, is the roaming bands of elite mobs that wander about the whole area. Take lots of armour-repair money, you're going to die. Over and over again.

As of Sept 14, 2007 there doesn't seem to be any elites in the area anymore. I also noticed that the Dragonkin in Swamp of Sorrows are no longer elite. That being said, definitely head to 41,75 for the quest items.

For those of you without coords: If you look on the map and position yourself under the "S" in "Stonemaul Ruins" then walk straight south, you'll run into the whelps.

From Mudsprocket go out toward the southeast (by the forge) toward 42,75, with the river to your left and the hills to your right. You will immediately come upon Wyrmbog, with lots of Searing Whelps and Searing Hatchlings. And as a bonus, if you have Catch a Dragon as well, there are plenty of Wyrmtail plants around. Watch for the leisurely patrol of two level 41 Firemane dragonkin.

Massive bottleneck, spawn rate is ridiculous, drop rate is bad and competition is fierce.
Be prepared to spend some time on this.

If you are power leveling to 60, id consider skipping this quest. Not a 100% drop rate and you will need 30 of them. You can easily make up the exp else where and if you have been to STV already the gloves and cape aren't upgrades.

Really good spot around 41, 73, lots of both types of mobs just beware of the patrols of 2 larger dragonkin in the area.

Remember it's progressive loot so there is a higher chance of getting a drop if you already have many drops in your bags. In other words, it's only hard when you begin, then you'll find more and more. I don't think this quest should be dropped, it's a good grind.

I'm 1 hour into this quest, I've done all of Overlord Mok....I have 1 searing tongue and 3 searing hearts.

In one hour, 50+ kills, 1 searing tongue and 3 searing hearts....

I've spent 25minutes here to be 'almost' done.

The exp per hour is just not worth it.

Why the puzzled stare, <name>? Expecting me to speak like an uncouth ruffian merely because I am an ogre?

Now back to business, bring to me the hearts and tongues from the whelps and hatchlings. I shall trace the root of this evil...
