The debris is along the bottom, but because of the murky water it's hard to see until you're close. Fortunately, there's burning wreckage on the surface marking where they are. The debris on the bottom looks like the debris pools for Fishing, while the wreckage on the surface looks like burning pieces of wood. I was able to use the Salvage Kit on either one when 2.3 first came out, but now it seems you can only use it on the bottom unless the water is shallow.

When you salvage the wreckage, be prepared for an attack. Instead of a salvaged strongbox, you may get a Mirefin Ambusher.(##RESPBREAK##)2056##DELIM##adashiel##DELIM##

Open your Renn's Supplies to get the free waterbreath hat and the kit to open the salvage.

Just an FYI - if you decide to use water breath pots instead of the hat, the hat still counts down from the time you opened the bag... you can't save it for later :(

This quest is easy as heck, but the rewards are utter shite, especially considering that by the time you can do this quest, you could quite easily solo the first part of Razorfren Kraul and kill Aggem Thorncurse to get https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/item=6681 instead. Twice.

I did that on my 34 hunter, and picked up a nice new boar pet while being in there.

A few words of warning for this quest:

1. If you are shape shifted while attempting to equip the helmet the helmet will disappear and you will not get the water breathing effect.

2. If there is no room in your inventory for the strong box you will fail to receive it and the wreckage will still disappear.

3. Stay away from Alcaz Island. Straying too closely will yield a ?? Elite Hydra chomping your hide the moment you get too close.

This quest was really easy :]

I just wanted to add, that if you do decide to stay under water, all of the debris have fish floating around the bottom so you can see it from far away in the murky water. So you don't have to go up to look for the burning pieces of wood.

I only ran into 2 aggros. :D

Lol, i found out that when you strike the second time at a wreck, you can hear a sound or nothing. When you here this sound, you will get your strongbox. But if you here nothing on your second strike, the ambusher comes. So at your second strike, if you here nothing, pull back so you can try to salvage again :)

I hadn't tried the above staying on surface trick, but underwater I did find that about 50% of the time I had to aggro with murlocks that pop out of the wreckage and you dont get the strongbox.

Just a heads up, when using the salvage kit there's a very high chance you will spawn a mirefin ambusher instead og getting a quest item.

These ambushers do NOT drop the quest items so can be avoid...

Stealthers can use salvage kit, then just as bar completes restealth, done correctly you will not agro the ambusher.

Same can be applied to mages blinking out of agro range just before mob spawn.

I just wanted to add if it hasn't already been mentioned- when you're in the water, you can tell where the floating wreckages are because they have swarms of fish swimming under them that you'll be able to see from quite far off.

I found the drop-rate improved after I'd gotten one or two of the boxes. Also, if you're trying to get your XP up, I found the divers pretty good for that.

ETA: I just realised Kimmycake already mentioned this - it's very handy :)

don't listen to them i found out the wreckage the ones with the most fish by them have the item your looking for the one with the less fish have the mob by them.p so have fun want remmber only u can prevent forest fire's wrong qoute lol

This quest was not fun. It took me forever to get the 6 salvaged strongboxes needed. It took me almost a full hour to get 6 of them. I spent most of my time fending off divers, mirefin and swimming. Not a quick and easy quest. The loot you received from it was good if you could use it.

I found a lot around the little islands/sandbars at (67,18). It also makes a convenient eat/drink spot, since at the time I did this, I didn't realize you could just sit on the wreckage.

Seems to me that the boxes only drop from wreckages that are shallow enough to use the salvage kit on the debris when out of the water. I got a box on my first try, then hit murlocs on six in a row. I got sick of dealing with them and the divers, so I stayed at the surface and only used the salvage kit when i didn't have to go below... and was rewarded with five straight boxes. Can anyone give this a shot and confirm?

I found that as soon as you find one box, then the rest come straight afterwards. Doesn't seem to be any other pattern to them, you just have to wait for the first one.

A helpful tip for Rogues doing this that may save you some time, as soon as you finish excavating the wreckage, immediately go into stealth so that if a Murloc spawns, you won't have to fight it. Hope this helps :)

it should be noted that combat will not interrupt extracting so if you dont feel like fighting u can just get the box and run away from the defais around it (or if the murk pops up)

im getting kind of irritated with this quest. i talk to renn and i dont recieve his supply bag? talk to him again and say i dont have diving gear anymore so he gives me the diving helmet but i need salvage kit to complete it. can anyone help?

This quest is not obsolete per say, but changed. You only need one box to complete the quest. Also, you get the box from the floating shipwreck debris, which makes it pretty easy. Don't even need the helmet.

You will have recieved from the previous quest Renn's Supplies. "unpack" it to reveal Salvage Kit and Repaired Diving Gear. Use the kit on any of the floating bits of wreckage to receive Salvaged Strongbox

You now only need one.

Easiest way is to stay above the water and look for the flaming wreckage. The stuff to salvage is directly below it. Sometimes you will get a lockbox, othertimes a small 36-38 mob appears.

Quest can be solo'd...did as 37 warrior.
However when opening the loot below each burning board (need 6)
just before it would finishing opening a murloc would appear and then the loot item would disappear w/o getting credit due to being interrupted.

Just had to keep going to another and another or wait for respawn...sometimes a murloc would appear, but only when murloc did not appear would get quest item credit.

It can be done but is annoying....make sure you are wearing the diving helmet, so you don't run out of breath! good luck

You find a lot of cargo at Coord's 66'11. For people who dont have Cords. It is northwest of Alcaz island. You'll see them clearly floating on the water. Put on your diving gear, first you have to right click the diving kit in your bag.

This quest is extremely easy!

Renn McGill gives you a bag "Renn's Supplies". Which gives you the "Salvage Kit" & "Repaired Diving Gear". Equip the Diving Gear & it will replace your helm.

I swam the bottom & looked for the flaming wreckage. Swim EAST from Renn, you'll find these really easy. You have to use the "Salvage Kit" to basically mine the Strong boxes. There is a chance a murloc will appear. I can see where this can be annoying if you get unlucky. Only took me 8 tries to get my 6. Murlocs were only level 36 for me.

I solo'd this quest as a 37 Shaman! Only thing you have to careful are the random Defias Divers that swim in the waters! They'll range up to level 38.

Once complete, just head back to Renn & it's that simple!

I'm not to sure what some people found on the bottom, but i got the 6 salvaged strongbox's from the burning peices of wood you see floating not to far from Ren Mcgill. I found this quest a bit buggy as i could only get it to collect if i jumped up on the wood facing the sparkles very close and click on the salvage kit. If you get interuppted by a Mirefin Murloc you don't get to collect that time. Does anyone know if you get to keep the Helmet after? I'd rather drop the quest than give this up :)

66, 13 is a good place to go. It's a small island that you can stand on to mana up (for spellcasters), and you can see five or six burning wreckages in the area.

This Quest is just free xp for druids, they get an aquatic form at level 16, so it's pretty sinple. If a murloc pops up, cat form pwn it and go back. Priceless.

when you see the burning wreck u have to dive down below to where the boxes are and then salvage it. sometimes, as part of the quest, instead of salvaging, a murloc will appear out of nowhere and u will have to fight it. i already have a helm i wear, so i used a breathing potion for this quest

Fairly easy.

There are burning bits of wood that mark where some wreckage is (just below). Use the salvage kit to get the lockboxes (by right clicking it near the wreckage). Sometimes murlocs jump out at you, although mostly you'll get the lockboxes. I found if you need to eat or drink, kill anything surrounding the wreckage and go sit on the burning wood to drink - yes, they're sittable on!

The defias divers aren't too much of a problem. Just annoying.

I agree this quest was a snap for a druid. I didn't even have to use the dive helmet, just popped into aquatic form and swam to the burning wreckage. If something interrupted me I switched to cat form, killed it, and went back to looting the wreckage. Nice!

I was helping a friend of mine do this quest. She spoke with the guy floating in the water, and she went to collect the damaged suit, and tool kit. When we went back to turn that part in he wasn't there anymore. But we found out that the guy will disappear after the one part of this quest, but give it a few minutes, and he will come back. We just waited in the same spot, and he reappeared and she was able to turn that part in and then go collecting the salvaged boxes. So, if he disappears on you, don't give up.

easy quest soloed as a 34 paladin without dying. Only problems were the occasional lvl 38 diver, but even then a single heal was enough to outlast them

Did this as a level 37 warrior. Once I figured out that the strong boxes were NOT going to show up with the little gear symbol the quest was pretty easy. I even lost my diving gear somehow and managed the quest just fine. The only agro was an occasional murloc and and occasional diver...no real problems.

When I turned in the quest I realized that I could have gone back to the guy and gotten more diving gear.... oh well.

When doing this quest, I recommend that you dive down and clear the area of monsters *before* trying to collect the cargo. Otherwise, what is likely to happen is that when you collect the cargo pile, it turns into a murloc. Then, while the murloc is introducing you to its claws, one or more defias divers in their "radar men from the moon" suits will stop by and introduce you to their spears. This is interesting the first time it happens, but annoying after about the 5th time.

Using a water-breathing potion makes life easier as well.

Although this quest wasn't hard it was annoying as utter hell. I had to go through 15 or 17 different burning cargo wrecks before I was able to gather the required ammount of cargo. 5 times in a row I got Mirefin ambushers, and though not hard they were annoying.

P.S - This quest sucks for Mages, not a single award item you can use once completed.

It wasn't as bad as some others described. Took about 5-10 mins.
To start, look right behind the quest-giver in the ocean. You will see some burning wreckage floating around. That's what you're looking for. The quest-giver gives you a bag which contains Diving gear and Salvage Kit. Wear the Diving gear (head piece) as it will allow you to breath under water. Now swim to a burning wreckage. Right beneath it you'll see Shipwreck debris. Swim to it and when you get close enough click on your Salvage kit. This will randomly either give you the quest item or spawn a lvl 37 murlock. I had to fight two mulocks to get my 6 boxes. Also watch out for the lvl 38 Defias Divers in the water. They roam around.

Just look out for burning planks of wood. Dive down and right click. Watch out for the occasional Murloc that might spawn. Also, some level 37 Defias Divers swimming back and forth. I had no problem with my Shammy at level 39. Nice 3700 XP and 40 silver.

Welll there is a couple of interesting things about this quest. One, the debris (scattered on the ocean floor near Renn) may give you a drop or may spawn a mirefin ambusher. Two, the gear he gives you to do the quest is an underwater breathing device ... so, you might want to think about not turning in the quest and just keeping this nifty toy :D I am a mage so I am going to try to keep it as there is no caster reward >.< for this quest.

I can understand the logic behind having defias divers roaming around the wreckages, but to have a murlock pop out of them is rather lame imo. Hasn't bliz prolonged the game long enough now with trying to get to level 70? (80 late next year I understand) Apparently not, when they keep adding these lame quests.

These new dustwallow marsh quests stink of the daily TBC quests.

All blizz have done is this -

1) Grabbed some old wow models
2) Placed them randomly across the map
3) Added a little lame story to it
4) Use an item on another item and then hand in to quest giver

I can instantly tell which are the new quests and which are the orignal quests.

I cant quite place my finger on it, but theres something not enjoyable about the new quests, they just seem shallow, no mystery behind them, no real storyline, no character to them. Kill a mob, collect an item, thats it. Its like your just completing the quest for the sake of it with no real reason for doing so.

Wierd feeling i have doing these quests, just too similar to the shallow dailies in TBC to be enjoyable.

when I did this, I think the closer to the starting npc the wreckage was, the more of a chance it would not contain a murloc. As I got closer to the big island, I got more of the murlocs - just a thought - might not be correct but that's the way it seemed to me.

Its pretty easy, just open Renn's supplies (you get when you accept quest) get the repaired diving gear and the salvage kit, then swim east of the island where you get quest and look for burning wreckage, swim under the burning wreckage and use the salvage kit on the debris, do this until you have six of them, just go back if you still need more.just remember to watch out for defilas and the annoying murlocs that come out of the debris sometimes, and dont go too close to alcaz island

Swim out in the sea from the questgiver and you'll see some burning wreckages ( I found the first one at 64,20). Then dive down under the wreckage and you'll see a shipwreck debris. Use the salvage kit, and you'll find a salvaged strongbox. Contine 'til you've got six, then return to the questgiver.

Edit: You may not get a strongbox of every debris, insted you'll get to fight an annoying lvl 37 murlock or something. So keep your eyes open.

Remove your helmet before you accept this quest on WOTLK Classic. I did not and my helmet got deleted somehow (was not in bags).

Well, I was able to make enough repairs to this gear to let you dive for awhile, anyway. I wouldn't count on it holding out for a long time, though.

The wreckage of the ship is strewn along the bottom from the east coast of this island out toward Alcaz Island. While that helm holds out, locate pieces of the wreckage on the bottom between this island and Alcaz. Use this salvage kit to search the wreckage for pieces of the cargo. Be careful not to venture too close to Alcaz Island. Those hydra are fierce.
