he is definately a reference to Link from the legend of zelda. Not sure why they chose gnome. Night elf ears or a human would have been a tad more suitable. he has a green tunic on with brown sleeves and a sword + shield with white tights. He even has a ground mount horse that resembles Epona. The green gryphon is just there for the lulz.

Good to see a reference to the old Vanilla quest from Un'Goro. :) I kept the photograph from that quest in my bank for a long, long time. Also good to see a reference to Zelda, which many of us gamers LOVED. And if you love gnomes...he's adorable! haha <3s for this Blizzard

He was part of a quest chain, which existed until the end of Wrath, that would allow you to get a couple things: Linken's Sword of Mastery and Linken's Boomerrang (as well as a few other items that I can't remember). Sadly, they removed that chain with the beginning of Cataclysm :(. The quest was called "It's a secret to everybody," which is some reference to a guy hiding in a cave somewhere in the first Legend of Zelda.

This npc is a possible guardian when performing the quest The Protectors of Hyjal. He is also one of the ones required to /wave at for the achievement Have... Have We Met?. You can wave at someone else's guardian, he does not have to be your guardian in order to count for the achievement.

Background:
Previous to the Shattering, Linken could be found in Un'Goro Crater, as a questgiver. The series of quests, and the character himself, is a reference to Link from the Legend of Zelda. Practically everything this character wears, says, or does, is a reference.

As a major fan of Zelda myself, I was sincerely disappointed to find Linken's absence after Deathwing's visit. I also hope to see this character return in a role beyond this simple cameo. But it's still good to see him again!

This is partly true, he DID have some companions, but none of them ever fought with him (ie Midna, Tatl, and the annoying blue fairy that nobody likes 'she who must not be named')

So he is used to fighting with other people, just not other people who help any.

a more effective reference would have been a bloodelf with a slightly smaller build than normal but same gear.

I for one am really sad i missed the "its a mystery to everyone" line and think they should bring it back and make more references like this
