The Cataclysm Classic Pre-Patch is live! As many players are leveling up their alts and preparing their characters for Cataclysm's official launch on May 20th, we decided to consult our
Class Guides
to detail which Professions best suit each Class Specialization!
Cataclysm Classic Pre-Patch Overview Guide New Race and Class Combinations - Cataclysm Classic
Best Professions for Death Knight
Blood
Engineering
Engineering changes quite a bit in Cataclysm Classic but thankfully, it is still the strongest option for dungeon and raid utility to maximize our tanking ability. Engineers will be able to craft
Reinforced Bio-Optic Killshades
that can be socketed with Engineering unique gems called cogwheels. These cogwheel slots are highly customizable and can give bonuses like
Fractured Cogwheel
and
Quick Cogwheel
.
Alchemy
Alchemy
becomes a stronger profession in Cataclysm due to the introduction of new profession specific craftable trinkets. The choice for Blood Death Knight is
Lifebound Alchemist Stone
due to Stamina and Mastery stat bonuses. This trinket is a strong starting trinket that can be used before you even hit level 85 and won't be replaced until you see
Symbiotic Worm
drop and have acquired
Mirror of Broken Images
/
Mirror of Broken Images
from their respective Reputations.
Blood Death Knight Professions
Frost & Unholy
Engineering
Engineering is, yet again, the largest possible damage increase you can acquire throughout Cataclysm. Engineering offers a powerful helmet
Reinforced Bio-Optic Killshades
starting from Phase 1, which lasts well into the first tier of raiding. It also offers you Cogwheels, which are Engineering-specific gems granting 208 of a secondary stat, which you can use two of in your helmet. Besides this, it grants you access to explosives that you can use to squeeze in an extra bit of damage.
Blacksmithing
For Blacksmithing, nothing has really changed since Wrath of the Lich King. As a Blacksmith, you gain access to an extra socket for your Bracers and Gloves via
Socket Bracer
and
Socket Gloves
. Again, simple math will tell you that with regular gems you gain +80 Strength, but when Epic-quality gems are released later in the game, you will gain +100 Strength, thus making Blacksmithing + Engineering your best combination in the very late game.

Balance
Engineering
Engineering offers a strong head slot item early on with
Camouflage Bio-Optic Killshades
letting you choose your own stats. It also gives access to one of the biggest pieces of utility
Nitro Boosts
. It also provide one of the highest DPS increases through
Synapse Springs
. It is however currently not known if
Nitro Boosts
will have a chance to fail inside cataclysm raids or not. Without Nitro Boosts, Engineering is still one of the strongest professions you can take. With it, its usefulness is unparallelled.
Tailoring
Tailoring provide us with
Lightweave Embroidery
. This has the highest potential of any profession bonus should you have good luck with the timing of when it activates, while the average damage of it is slightly below that of other professions.
Balance Druid Professions
Feral DPS & Tank
Engineering
Engineering is, yet again, the largest possible damage increase you can acquire throughout Cataclysm. Engineering offers a powerful helmet
Agile Bio-Optic Killshades
starting from Phase 1, which lasts well into the first tier of raiding. It also offers you Cogwheels, which are Engineering-specific gems granting 208 of a secondary stat, which you can use two of in your helmet. Besides this, it grants you access to explosives that you can use to squeeze in an extra bit of damage.
Leatherworking
Leatherworking is considered a very strong profession if you plan on ever playing a tank role in raid as it provides the highest bonus stamina as there is no Cataclysm level stamina bracer enchant. For pure DPS, Leatherworking provides +80 agility with
Draconic Embossment - Agility
.
Feral Druid DPS Professions Feral Druid Tank Professions
Restoration
Engineering
Engineering
is the largest possible power increase you can acquire from a profession. Engineering offers a powerful helmet
Camouflage Bio-Optic Killshades
starting from Phase 1, which lasts well into the first tier of raiding. It also grants you access to explosives that you can use to squeeze in an extra bit of damage, though it's worth noting that explosives share a cooldown with Leatherworking's
Greater Drums of Speed
.
Leatherworking
Leatherworking
is a powerful healer support profession as it lets you use
Greater Drums of Speed
. While minor, the 15% movespeed added by these drums compounds quickly with your raid size and essentially means that much more uptime for your entire raid.
Restoration Druid Professions
Best Professions for Hunter
Engineering
Engineering should come as no surprise as being one of the best options in yet another expansion. Engineering will allow you to craft a powerful pre-raid BiS helmet
Deadly Bio-Optic Killshades
once the actual expansion starts. It also offers you Cogwheels, which are Engineering-specific gems granting 208 of a secondary stat, which you can use two of in your helmet. The next extremely powerful bonus from Engineering is the
Synapse Springs
. This is an on-use glove enchant that increases your primary stat by 480 for 12 seconds. In the case of a Hunter, this would be 480 Agility, which is insanely strong and can be used once every minute - and these also stack with regular glove enchants.
Jewelcrafting
Jewelcrafting will remain the best second profession in Cataclysm Pre-Patch and all the way until the new Cataclysm epic gems are released in the future. The biggest benefit to Jewelcrafting is the stat gain from having 3x
Delicate Dragon's Eye
beats out every other stat gain available from other professions.
Beast Mastery Hunter Professions Marksmanship Hunter Professions Survival Hunter Professions
Best Professions for Mage
Engineering
During Pre-Patch, we still have access to the
Hyperspeed Accelerators
, as well as
Nitro Boosts
which now goes on the waist slot instead of the feet slot. We can still use
Eternal Belt Buckle
alongside it as well. This also frees up the feet slot to use more damage-focused enchants instead.
Tailoring
Provides access to the
Lightweave Embroidery
enchant for the back slot, which on average will be higher Intellect gain than other alternatives.

Engineering

Protection
Engineering
Engineering has been the staple raiding profession throughout Classic WoW and Cataclysm is not really any different, despite attempts to severely nerf this profession from past expansions. Engineering does not really see a huge evolution in the explosive category, some of the gadget attachments now come with drawbacks applicable in raids. Because of all this, it's hard to recommend Engineering for everyone. Make no mistake, Engineering when you are utilizing all the additional tools awarded to you is hands down the best profession, however if you can not or do not intend to use this profession to its fullest you can skip this for one with better passives.
Alchemy
Alchemist raid utility is a relatively new concept for us as Protection Paladins, usually a very strong trade to pick up for those looking to make gold through their crafts. Alchemists are primarily crafting potions, elixirs, and flasks but they also dabble in transmutation. The latter is typically a day long cooldown that lets you turn one trade good (metal or gem) into another, or generate an endgame crafting material such as in the case of
Transmute: Truegold
.
Protection Paladin Professions
Retribution
Engineering
This is going to be the most powerful profession at 85, giving access to a powerful helm in Phase 1
Reinforced Bio-Optic Killshades
, and allowing you to use Cogwheels - a powerful type of gem that gives you +208 of any secondary stat - for us that will typically be Mastery, Hit or Expertise. The most powerful part of this profession at 85 is the
Synapse Springs
enchant, which stacks with your regular glove enchant, and gives you a powerful +480 Strength cooldown every minute, similar to
Hyperspeed Accelerators
. In combination with Blacksmithing or Tailoring, this will be your best-in-slot profession throughout Cataclysm.
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing, just like in Wrath, provides you with an extra socket on your gloves and your belt from
Socket Bracer
and
Socket Gloves
. This will provide you with +80 Strength in the early parts of the game, but when
Dragon Soul
releases with epic-quality gems, this will actually be worth an extra +100 Strength, solidifying it as one of the best options to use alongside Engineering.
Retribution Paladin Professions
Best Professions for Priest
Discipline & Holy
Engineering
While the pure stats Engineering provides aren't too high, it will be mandatory in any serious guild for the insane amount of utility it provides. Engineering adds a ton of gadgets, toys, and enchants. Most of these are just for fun, but a lot of them are fantastic for both PvE and PvP content.
Leatherworking
The best profession to pair it with is Leatherworking as it allows you to use
Greater Drums of Speed
, in addition to the spell power from the bracer enchant.
Greater Drums of Speed
allows you and your party to get through raids quicker, but is also insanely useful on any encounter that has movement-related mechanics. Outside of combat, you can rely on
Aspect of the Pack
as this is now raid-wide.
Discipline Priest Professions Holy Priest Professions
Shadow
Engineering

Tailoring
Lightweave Embroidery
is a fantastic Cloak enchant, giving 295 Spell Power for 15-seconds on proc. This is incredibly strong if the proc lines up with other procs and on-use abilities, but does have a fairly long cooldown, so its value depends heavily on luck.
Shadow Priest Professions
Best Professions for Rogue
In Cataclysm, most of the professions are very close to one another offering roughly 80 Agility across the board. Rogues will generally want to be some combination of Tailoring, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting.
Engineering
Engineering continues to be unique in the perks that it offers. To start with, you’ll be able to obtain your pre-bis helmet (
Reinforced Bio-Optic Killshades
) from engineering as usual with a slight twist this time around. The helm will have 2 new “Cogwheel” slots that you can plug any secondary stat into and gain 208 of that stat. This allows for some powerful customization early on especially when attempting to meet expertise cap. You’ll also be able to utilize
Synapse Springs
which has replaced the Wrath version
Hyperspeed Accelerators
. Instead of giving an increase to haste, these now offer 480 Agility for 10s with the same 1-minute cooldown. This is another powerful on-use to utilize at the start of a pull.
Tailoring
Offers a new cloak enchant in
Swordguard Embroidery
, increasing attack power by 1000 for 15s with a 45s CD. This is a powerful proc when stacked with other on-pull effects and offensive cooldowns.
Jewelcrafting
Jewelcrafting will once again have its 3 gems that are specific to them. They will now be called
Chimera's Eye
, and when crafted into
Delicate Chimera's Eye
, will offer +81 Agility over the standard
Delicate Inferno Ruby
. These are devalued again heading into the final tier once
Delicate Queen's Garnet
are accessible.

Elemental & Enhancement
Engineering
Engineering
is, arguably, the largest possible power increase you can acquire from a profession. Engineering offers powerful helmets
Energized Bio-Optic Killshades
&
Deadly Bio-Optic Killshades
starting from Phase 1, which lasts well into the first tier of raiding. It also grants you access to explosives that you can use to squeeze in an extra bit of damage, though it's worth noting that explosives share a cooldown with Leatherworking's
Greater Drums of Speed
.
Tailoring
Tailoring
's profession benefit is slightly unique -
Lightweave Embroidery
&
Swordguard Embroidery
. The burst nature of this proc makes it perfect to have on the pull alongside trinkets and consumable-driven bonuses, making Tailoring the best DPS
Shaman
profession alongside Engineering.
Elemental Shaman Professions Enhancement Shaman Professions

Tailoring
With Tailoring we can make a couple of our pre-BIS items if we need. The biggest benefit comes in the form of the cloak enchant
Lightweave Embroidery
. This has a chance to proc
Lightweave
which increases our intellect by 580 for 15 seconds. This averages to about 140 intellect. It replaces the normal 50 intellect enchant, providing an 86 intellect bonus. This makes Tailoring one of the best possible damage-increasing professions for Warlocks.
Engineering
Engineering has always been the gadget profession.
Synapse Springs
is a glove enchant. We can activate it when we please for 10 seconds. It gives 480 intellect. Warlock's lack of mobility is partially offset thanks to
Nitro Boosts
however it has a high risk of failure. It gives a huge speed boost for a short time. And it doesn't end here, there are a ton more utility items that engineering provides.

Engineering
Engineering is once again the best profession, for a record 4th expansion in a row. As usual, engineering provides a range of bombs and gadgets that can be used, similar to WotLK, although the DPS difference is much closer. However, I would always recommend taking Engineering - the potential for on-demand burst benefits outweighs the passive bonuses some other professions grant.
Tailoring
Oddly enough, Tailoring is a very competitive choice in Cataclysm. The high bonus of the cloak enchant can be a powerful option, although it is severely outweighed in T13 due to the new gems that come out.
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing is the hidden gem (no pun intended) of Cataclysm professions. While it is very slightly behind Tailoring in T11/12, it massively outpaces the other professions in T13, due to the introduction of new epic gems. If you don't plan on switching professions between tiers, I would recommend going Blacksmithing from the beginning.
Arms Warrior Professions Fury Warrior Professions
Protection
Engineering
In Cataclysm,
Engineering
gives you a nice headstart with a pair of
ilvl 359 goggles
that can be personalized with the secondary stats of your choice using
engineering
cogwheels
and are BiS until ilvl 372 heroic gear. New and improved tinkers that can be added on top of regular enchants, such as
on-use armor on gloves
or
strength for your DPS spec
,
absorption on belt
, and of course the usual fun utility like
parachute cloak
,
invisibility
or
nitro-boosts
(although it can now backfire 10-20% of the time in dungeons and raids and give you a
nasty debuff
...)
. And we can't forget
bombs
and
sappers
for more AoE damage and threat.
Leatherworking
For some strange reason, Cataclysm didn't introduce a new tank enchant for bracers to upgrade from
Enchant Bracer - Major Stamina
.
Leatherworking
, however, did receive an upgrade from
Fur Lining - Stamina
in the form of
Draconic Embossment - Stamina
, granting a
+155 Stamina
upgrade over the regular enchants, when most other professions only provide +120 Stamina as a perk. While Stamina isn't as desirable as Mastery for a Protection
Warrior
early on, having +75 of it more than makes up for the difference!
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing
, thanks its additional gem sockets to
bracers
and
gloves
, grants you an additional
+120 Stamina
or
+80 Mastery
, which is pretty much the standard benefits for Cataclysm professions across the board. However, it's also the only profession that scales throughout the expansion, going from +120 Stamina or +80 Mastery to +150 Stamina or +100 Mastery once epic gems are introduced in phase 3! By this point, it becomes the best profession for a Protection
Warrior
neck and neck with
Leatherworking
, with the added benefit of also being excellent for your DPS spec or PvP spec since you can socket any stat you want.
