What's Wrong with Ensembles in Pandaria Remix?

Mists of Pandaria Remix has been in full swing for some time now, and players are gearing up, taking on Mythic Siege of Orgrimmar, and grinding
Bronzo
for exclusive cosmetics. Some of those cosmetics, however, have proved a bit more difficult to get than others - and not because they're rare.
Players have noticed that Ensembles have been particularly picky in Pandaria Remix. Whether they're unable to learn them when they should, able to learn them when they shouldn't, or other numerous issues, it's fairly clear - Ensembles are bugged in more ways than the Klaxxi. We decided to dig down into the issues plaguing the community to try and determine the source of the problems, as well as clear up misconceptions associated with these Pandaria Remix Ensembles.
It's important to remember that it is impossible for anyone but Blizzard to know specific details on how Ensembles, items, and collections are supposed to work in World of Warcraft - it requires access to the original code of the game, which no one in the community has. However, testing, word of mouth, and hours spent attempting to pinpoint the specific issues involved in this complex situation can paint a fairly clear picture for us.
A special thank you to Darkal, All The Things and Data for Azeroth Contributor, as well as the collector community for contributing to the information and data within this article.
How do Ensembles Work?
Every item has an item ID - it's how World of Warcraft knows the difference between a
Forcone Arrugginito
and a
Tonaca del Triumvirato Glorioso
. These item IDs all have something associated called a source ID, which allows the game to correctly grant an appearance when first obtaining an item. For example, recent raids have used items with the same item ID across all difficulties, but different source IDs to differentiate difficulty-specific appearances. When it comes to Transmog, two methods are generally viewed by collectors as ways to gain a particular piece, and these differing item IDs and source IDs are how Transmog collection is tracked.
In the first case, a player may only want the appearance of an item - any item will do, as long as it looks the way they want. In this situation, let's look at
Bastone dell'Impulso del Collettore
: there are four items that share this exact appearance,
Bastone dell'Impulso del Collettore
,
Colonna del Custode dell'Anima
,
Spira del Dominatore Giurafauce
, and
Bastone del Mago Oscuro Giurafauce
. For this player, collecting one of these is enough to gain the appearance, so the other three don't matter; they can already use the look they were searching for.
Some collectors, however, try to collect
every
source of an appearance - that means all four of these staves would need to be collected before they considered this appearance "done." Ensembles work differently, however - they work with something called TransmogSet ID instead of item ID or source ID.
An Ensemble only cares about one thing: have you fully completed the TransmogSet ID yet? If not, you can use the Ensemble to learn all appearances grouped under the TransmogSet ID umbrella. If yes, you cannot use that Ensemble -
even if there are appearances you haven't learned
.
How can that happen, though? There are several ways this might occur, the most common being that a player has simply played the game a lot. If you're a dedicated player who really wanted the
Mastodonte Kor'kron
, you may have run Siege of Orgrimmar dozens if not hundreds of times depending on RNG, and there's a lot of opportunity to complete full transmog sets in that time. If, then, those sets are made into Ensembles, and new appearances are added to those Ensembles after the fact, you'd be locked out of using the Ensemble to gain that appearance.
"All Appearances are Already in your Collection"
This leads to the first bug that many players are experiencing in Pandaria Remix, which is receiving an error while attempting to use a brand-new Ensemble. Those using a collecting addon such as All The Things would see that there's more to learn from any given ensemble, but frustratingly be unable to gain the appearances.
This bug isn't a new one, either - players have been complaining about this issue for years when it comes to Ensembles, not just in Pandaria Remix. Among collecting communities, PvP Ensembles are infamous for this issue, with many having "new" IDs added to them once a season is over, locking players who chose to do the content while it was current out of specific item and source IDs.
Is it Already Known or Not?
Another bug that players have reported is when an Ensemble indicates on its tooltip that it is already known - but it actually isn't. This bug in particular is difficult to address because there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to why this may be indicated (or
not
indicated) on an Ensemble, meaning players will need to test each one of them to know for sure individually.
New Shirts, New Problems
Bizarrely, the largest issue that seems to affect all players, not just those looking for specific source and item IDs, is that Ensembles aren't properly recognizing that brand-new, unique appearances have been added to them. With Pandaria Remix, special new "Shirt" appearances such as
Camicia di Tela dello Sha
and
Veste della Foresta Infestata
were added to the ensembles for Raid sets, and this
should
have triggered the TransmogSet ID to flag as incomplete, but it didn't. These shirts are Chest transmogs technically, falling under the armor type of the ensemble they belong to, meaning that they wouldn't be used in the Shirt slot - they are truly unique new chest items for the purposes of appearance. Players have therefore been punished for playing the game by being unable to get these brand new, limited-time, completely unique appearances.
This is something that, unlike other Ensemble issues, can be seen in the base Blizzard UI - no collection addon necessary. This transforms a somewhat niche error that has plagued smaller portions of the playerbase to the forefront of frustration in Pandaria Remix.
How Can Ensembles be Fixed?
While we aren't able to know for certain how correct the community is in their assumptions on the workings of Ensembles, one thing we
do
know for sure is that players would love to see these problems fixed. It's tempting to say "just fix it like this" as an easy solution, but we can't know the complexities behind the system or any issues that might arise from changing how Ensembles work.
In an ideal world, allowing an Ensemble to be used if it would award
any
missing source or item ID would be a wonderful solution. This would allow those looking to collect everything available to do so, while also preventing other players or those who simply had good luck on transmog collection from accidentally being locked out of appearances.
Pandaria Remix has been an ambitious project for World of Warcraft, and an adjustment to Ensembles might well be something that boosts its esteem in the mind of the playerbase into an even more positive light.
