It's time for another 8.2 interview, as Polygon also interviewed Ion Hazzikostas about the upcoming Rise of Azshara patch. He confirmed that you'll be able to fly in Mechagon and Nazjatar!

Rise of Azshara Overview
for what we know of Patch 8.2 so far.
Heart of Azeroth and Azerite Armor
Previously, it was announced that the Heart of Azeroth requirements for Azerite Armor in 8.2 would not be increasing but Polygon's interview with Ion Hazzikostas implies that Azerite Traits will not require a Heart of Azeroth requirement at all! Instead, players will be putting Artifact Power directly into a Legion-style artifact progression and upgrades as previously announced.
For one, Azerite traits and armors are no longer linked to the level of your Heart of Azeroth, so players can just focus on picking traits. There will be Legion-style artifact progression and upgrade systems. There will be active powers, like shields and buffs, that players activate from their Heart.
Flying in Mechagon and Nazjatar
Both Mechagon and Nazjatar will have flying enabled! You'll probably have to unlock BFA Pathfinder Part 2, similar to previous expansions, but these zones will take the best elements from the Timeless Isle, Argus, Tanaan Jungle and the Broken Shore.
Mechagon and Nazjatar will both be endgame experiences that draw on the best elements of previous endgame grinds: the Timeless Isle, Argus, Tanaan Jungle, and the Broken Shore. Azshara’s domain of Nazjatar will be a little more typical, while Mechagon will be “what you might expect from a gnomish paradise,” says Hazzikostas. He describes it as more sandbox-y, unpredictable, and akin to a playground. Both zones will have flying enabled.
Classes
Ion notes that the loss of Legion's legendaries, pruning abilities and lack of endgame talents means that being max level isn't always fun to play. If the core gameplay loop isn't fun, it doesn't matter how beautiful the scenery is.
Why no 120 talents? If they come up with new abilities, some classes might not feel like they need those abilities and they are more filler. Changes to the talent system as a whole will be something for a whole expansion but they will be continue to have talent tuning for the rest of Battle for Azeroth.
The problem with Battle for Azeroth’s endgame is that a culling of abilities, the loss of Legion’s legendaries, and a lack of endgame talents means that hitting the max level doesn’t necessarily make your character more fun to play. Your character is a vehicle to explore new content, and it doesn’t matter how stunning the vista is if the core gameplay loop you’ll execute a few thousand times just isn’t fun.
The Story
They are aware of the parallels between Sylvanas and Garrosh, and the Horde's story between
Mists of Pandaria
and
Battle for Azeroth
. Ion explains that Garrosh's motivations were different and there will be no trial for Sylvanas, as that is not her character.
Hazzikostas is aware of the parallels to Garrosh’s story, and he says that the Horde is too.
“There are a couple of references here and there,” he says. “There are more coming. Members of the Horde leadership will remember going down dark paths before.”
He also notes that Garrosh’s motives were different; they were an attempt to restore a lost vision of the Horde at the expense of everything else. Sylvanas’ goals are still unclear, but Hazzikostas notes, “There will not be a trial where she is in chains. Sylvanas is not a character who would find herself in that situation ... ever.
Back at
BlizzCon 2018
, someone asked "How are you going to differentiate between what Sylvanas is doing and what Garrosh did?" and Blizzard replied:
These are my favorite kind of questions--that I can't answer. Well the story is not done. And there's much left to discover, to explore. I will say this...If I were Sylvanas and looking at what Garrosh had wrought across the world, I'd probably think "Garrosh was an amateur."
We speculated what this could mean in
Thrall, Sylvanas, and Garrosh - Story Hints from the BlizzCon 2018 Q&A
, including Sylvanas potentially mastering Undeath by overthrowing Bwonsamdi and the Lich King.
Ion also addressed the concerns that the Horde players were forced into a very dark story, complicit with Sylvanas in the genocide of Teldrassil.
It’s a heavy responsibility, and it’s not one that anyone on the team takes lightly,” he says. “Our aim in storytelling is always to evoke emotion. If that goes too far, it can feel exploitative, it can feel like players are caught in a situation they don’t want to be in. We want people to stick around, to play with their friends, and to see the end of the story we’re telling
Hints of Alliance Unrest
There's a interesting quote about how the Alliance don't have a division in their ranks
just yet
. Could this hint at a split between the Alliance? We've already seen tension in 8.1 between Anduin's decision to focus on Dazar'alor, and Tyrande's desire to drive the Horde out of Darkshore.
Alliance don’t have that same division in their ranks just yet, and there isn’t that same natural point of choice.
