Completed this item today and tested it. As previously noted, it summons a group of scarabs that will follow you around. Sadly, the effect seemed to last all of twenty seconds, which is rather disappointing given the hour and forty minute cooldown. It may be that either the duration or cooldown is currently a mistake, but for the moment, many might find it fairly underwhelming compared to some of the other "toy" items from archaeology.

How many people found this after spending hours without a single dig site spawn in Uldum. I mean, I sure love the thought of needing to farm 150 fragments just to get past this worthless item. Whoever designed Archeology is currently at the top of my list of people to kill.

My second Tol'Vir artifact, and this useless piece of junk pops up. I simply do not care about it, and it's agonizing that you also need to get 150 fragment pieces in a place which they are already so rare.

Probably one of the worse typos around WoW:
My guess is that this incredibly useful and very funny item should have had 10 minutes cooldown instead of 100 minutes.

As I was assembling this, a friend from my teamspeak said: "Great, the worst of the useless rare artifacts."
After completing it, i knew why.

I hope Blizzard improves the spawn rates of dig sites in Uldum soon. Having this kind of rare artifacts (150 pieces) makes archaeology more boring than it needs to be. And many players on my server think it is boring already without having skilled to the max.

Just got mine today. I could understand this being a rare reward from one of the other races - sure, fine. But, given the increased grindage for Tol'vir fragments, this is a little disappointing. And I agree with the others on the cd - that has to be a mistake considering most other "aesthetic" items usually have a cd of about 10 min. Obviously most people are hoping to get the mount from Tol'vir, but at least make the other Tol'vir rare items worth the while.

Well, as Tol'vir rares go I was after something a bit more useful, but this is still one I'm happy to have found.
For anyone who has completed the Scepter of the Shifting Sands quest chain and maxed out their Nozdormu rep, this this feels like a little piece of the past.

Now I just need to find the new scarab mount and hope that Blizz decides to make "of the Shifting Sands" into a title.
Please, Blizz, please.

P.S. As it's BOA this is a very nice piece to send to your blingy level 1 bank alt. Now that's jazz.

I can't for the life of me understand why this item is Bind to Account... Maybe they intended to make it an actual epic neck but decided against it at the last second.

given it's named a pendant,
perhaps it was initially an actual necklace, with the on use as a side note,
I would imagine an agil or tanking neck, due to the lack of lev85 agil & tanking items.
perhaps they felt there were too many lev85 epic pieces from tol'vir and reduced it to a flavor item.
all just speculation tho.

Took 18 completed tol'vir artifacts just to seem my first rare, and it happened to be this piece of !@#$. I have not even seen a canopic jar yet.

Of course this had to be my first Tol'vir epic. Found it before my first Canopic Jar and another common that I still needed for The Boy Who Would be King. Upon seeing the 150 frag requirement I just stopped digging for about 2 days. Keep in mind this was before 4.0.6 and since then they've added like 5 new digsites at Uldum and their improved frequency is very noticeable.

This thing sucks and the HUGE cooldown is salt on the wound, but I take solace in knowing that at least the worst is over with. Every other epic from Tol'vir is a lot more useful and interesting, even though all I can really use is the ring and mount.

Found it before my first Canopic Jar and another common that I still needed for The Boy Who Would be King.

Exact same for me: Pendant before my first Jar. Immediately sent it to a banktoon -- always fun to have a Level 1 showing off some moderately-cool vanity stuff.

BTW, either I've been on a lucky streak or the latest patch has upped the dig node spawn rate in Uldum a bit. Still not great, but improved.

These scarabs can be killed by AoE attacks (I was sad to see my peaceful scarab friends die after using Fan of Knives).

The cooldown resets when you mail it to other characters on your account.

THE PENDANT SUMMONS A STORM OF SCARABS... do these count for the achievement to kill critters?

If so, it would seem like a truly EXCELLENT way to get an achieve that would be difficult (not impossible, just difficult) to get otherwise....

I wonder whose job it is at Blizzard to piss players off? It is the guy who designs things like this item, Bones of Transformation, Kaledori Wind Chimes etc. Very, VERY poor design, no thought into it at all.

I don't mean to hate on Blizzard's attempts to add some nifty items in the game, but...

"Summons a swarm of peaceful scarabs"

More like "summons a dozen little thumbtack-sized bugs that follow behind me in a half-circle and disappear after 20 seconds"

When I think of "swarm", I think of bugs flying around me, sorta like the towers in Silithus. Sorry to say, it's a large number of artifacts from one of the hardest races to find mining sites, and in the end a fairly lackluster brief effect with a ridiculous cooldown. I realize it's being changed in 4.1, but 10 minutes is still ridiculous.

Also, how is this a strain on Blizzard's systems? With all the hundreds of thousands of critters all over Azeroth, will the system really break by someone using this to generate a few more for 20 seconds?

This item made me sad and left me with the thought that the whole Archeology profession is rather poor in its devellopment.
I have spent a lot of time in levelling this profession, but most of the rewards are just too poor, exept the fossil mount perhaps.
There are some possibillities to make the profession somewhat more attractive, like making the monetary rewards a little higher, more useful items to gain and make you feel that maxed archeology means something like giving you more survey on a certain dig place, maybe 5x or so.
The way archeology is now, I won`t advise any new player to level it, because it is simply not worth the time in terms of entertainment.
Other professions, even fishing, will give you more quallity time.

Rant Warning: Skip this comment if you don't, in any way, loathe archaeology and it's "rewards".

OK, I finally give up. All I wanted was the Crawling Claw, for reasons possibly best known only to myself. Now, I can handle the small but sharp disappointment of completing each Tol'vir artifact only to see that the next is another common, and will therefore have to spend a considerable portion of my playing time clearing other sites in Kalimdor (in which I have ABSOLUTELY no interest) just to get that slight joy of finally seeing an Uldum site pop up. I can handle the constant debate with myself whether it's worth paying 400g a time for the Hieroglyphics to reduce the time spent doing Archaeology, and therefore the possibility that my brain is finally going to flatline on me in sheer disgust at the boredom I am subjecting it to. But I have finally had enough of the absolute horror of seeing that my next artifact is a rare, which means I can't even pray for the Claw without prostrating myself before the altar of mindlessness for days, or even weeks, to obtain a completely useless item which is fun for about 10 seconds, or at least would be if it hadn't nearly cost me my sanity to earn.

I'm not saying this rare is worse than the others, by the way. For me it's just the straw which broke my patient, camel-like back.

You know what? I'll skip the pet. And maybe with counselling I'll get over the lost portions of my life.

This just popped up for me. I'm happy it's a rare. One step closer to Professor but I've been farming the Claw or Mount for what seems like a lifetime.

It'll take me forever to grind out this one to get to the next at the rare I get Tol'Vir sites.
