an amazing trinket that will serve you well through heroics and into raids the proc gives you a survivability bonus when you need it
ive never been a fan of random trinket procs as a tank. On use or ones like this that happen when your low are great!
hopefully mine will drop soon and i can see myself using this in combo with my JC trinket (if they ever unbug it so it will drop for me!) as i progress though raiding till a nice epic trinket drops :D

prot warrior/paladin:

15% stam from prot spec
5% stam from plate gear mastery
5% stam from MOTW/Kings

Total +25% stam

= 534 stam @ 14HP/stam = 7472 HP total from this trinket!

17% drop rate means more than 1 chance per 6hcs to drop. obviously this is wrong. I have done it 30times now and never dropped.

Does there always have to be a discussion on whether or not/when mitigation > avoidance? Don't get me wrong, it's a valid topic with many valid points on both sides...just as it was when it started two expansions ago.

The fact is this; tanks use several stats to help keep from dying - dodge, parry, block (where applicable), armor, stamina, mastery, even strength to a certain extent - and trinkets can only increase one or two of these at a time. Furthermore, different tanks have different abilities to help in different areas - warriors can spell-reflect, paladins have Divine Protection and Guardian of Ancient Kings, death knights can self-heal even better than paladins, etc. - so a trinket that's a godsend for a beartank might not be as helpful for a death knight, and so on.

Meaning? Tank trinkets are often situational. There's no way to have just two trinkets that'll cover you in EVERY fight, and if you're really that concerned about which is best, the smart move is to collect and keep different ones on hand, switching them out when necessary. The Tol Barad trinket is a perfect example of this - bloody useless in some cases, but in spell-heavy fights it is a thing of beauty.

This li'l gem has a nice chunk of Stamina, which is always nice. The proc can be a lifesaver on physical-heavy bosses - when a boss is hitting you for 50k, an extra 5% armor or so can slow down the damage just long enough for that big heal to come through. However, it's useless against bosses that frequently or only use spells, rendering armor utterly useless. It's not the best for every fight, but it has its uses. Like every tank trinket.

If you're lucky enough to find it, hold onto it even if you don't use it now. It may just save your life someday. :)

I see a lot of people writing off the RNG of avoidance in comparison, but really, say you're a shield tank sitting at 80% avoid + block vs the boss (after taking into account reduction in level difference) leaving him only a 20% chance of landing a full on hit.

Even a proc that gave just 2% dodge or parry (after DR) would reduce your chance to take a full hit from the boss by 10%.

It's still RNG, but it has more of an impact than some would imply. To me that's far greater than a ~3% dmg reduction when the next hit may very well kill you outright.

Nub question, but is the wording on the proc correct, that it will only proc for the melee hit that puts you below 35%, and not other once you are already below 35%? And it has to be a melee hit, not even say ranged physical damage?

The biggest question I have is: can you equip both heroic and normal version at the same time?
Because this is as far as I can see the only real trinket for tanks which doesn't require you to raid (which takes lots of time) or have a certain profession,
except https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/item=63742, which I sold (I know, I'm a complete idiot) because I thought Blizzard at least had made more than one dungeon trinket for tanks.

What is the real drop rate for this trinket? I've run H Stonecore for over a month now and haven't seen it drop once. Magnetite Mirror drops all the time, but never Leaden Despair.

Also, what other DK Tank trinkets can I try for without running raids or doing alchemy?

I did 14 runs in Stonecore hc, and NEVER saw this trink dropped (as well as mount tho). Since i m prot warrior, its the only thing that keeps me doing this hc again and again. I saw ALL the loot possible from this boss, except my damn trinket. Arrrrgh!

The value in this trinket lies solely on how much you are dropping below 35% health while taking physical melee damage, if you are saved by the damage reduction from the armor bonus, and the stam. This requires no math to prove, only common sense. Judge it to your own standards.

There seems to be some confusion:

- A raid boss has a normal level like any other, being maximum level for that expansion +3.

: You can confirm this in your character pane!

So a boss in Molten Core is considered to be level 63,
A boss in Black Temple is considered to be 73,
A boss in Ulduar is considered to be 83,
A boss in any of the current raids is considered to be 88.

HOWEVER, when a boss is marked as a skull, as with any raid boss, the hit% you need changes significantly.
If your hit% part of the character sheet pane, when you hover over it, you will see up to your level +3 worth of levels.

You will always need a minimum of the boss' level to counter, but if you are above boss level minus 3, you need YOUR level +3 levels worth of hit rating to be hit capped.

For example:

The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 60 and will need to cap for level 63.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 61 and will need to cap for level 64.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 62 and will need to cap for level 65.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 63 and will need to cap for level 66.

And also:

The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 70 and will need to cap for level 73.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 80 and will need to cap for level 83.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 85 and will need to cap for level 88.

But also as you can boost level 52 alts through Molten Core:

The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 52 and will need to cap for level 63.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 53 and will need to cap for level 63.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 54 and will need to cap for level 63.
The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 55 and will need to cap for level 63.

Etc. In case some of you didn't get it yet, here's some more examples:

The boss is level 63 (level 60 raid), you are level 85 and will need to cap for level 88.
The boss is level 73 (level 70 raid), you are level 85 and will need to cap for level 88.
The boss is level 83 (level 80 raid), you are level 85 and will need to cap for level 88.
The boss is level 88 (level 85 raid), you are level 85 and will need to cap for level 88.

If you are maximum level and are going to do old raids, you WILL need to cap for 3 levels above your level, regardless of being the boss much lower level than you are.

Wow! I saw a shadow priest in a heroic with this! Could he be using this to pvp? Who knows! All I know is he afk'd after the first boss!
