Part of a pre-cata event where you can kill 12 elementals spawning out of a rift. The amount of health on the rift indicates how many elementals are alive.
These rifts are everywhere in the world, ranging from lvl 10-80.
Destroying a rift gives you a buff based on the element.
These rifts are a daily, meaning you can only loot one that is around your level and only turn it in once per day.

An easy way to check how many you need to kill is to click the rift, its hp represents the elementals remaining.

Got one in Zul'Drak as a level 80, it did not start a quest for me. Tried another rift and was unable to loot a new one. Tried another rift again after destroying the first and was still unable to loot a second one. Guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Edit: In my excitement, I didn't realize that I had accepted the quest when i clicked the Mysterious Device, and then stupidly destroyed the quest item without checking my quest log. /facepalm at myself.

A fire rift spawned right in the middle of Winterfall Village in Winterspring. Far East.

Was grinding rep there. Once all the elementals were dead the Mysterious Device sat there on the ground but I was unable to loot it. I'm level 80 and the rift was 55 so it might be a level req. thing.

Edit: closing the rift grants you the 60-minute Water Powered buff.

Got one on my 22 Undead Mage in Hillsbrad -- the elementals there were level 25. Killed 9 of them and the rift closed and I looted this.

Took it to the Undercity as the quest instructed, rewarded 2100exp and 14s.

A bunch of elementals spawned in the middle of New Hearthglen and started fighting with the Scarlet Onslaught. I let the epic battle resolve and then looted the device. Ezpz.

I have been Questing in STV, and got my device in grom gol bace camp and have seen 2 rift more in stv randomly while i was questing.. So there are plenty of em ..

Update i was in Ogrimar by the great fire near the entrance, i turned in my "Device" there got 6000 xp for it on my lvl 43 rogue.. Sweet, so if u got it go there..

Killed a Wind elemental rift off in the basin (20 65) area and the mysterious device seems to give me a 50 haste buff while attacking stuff. Too bad is doesn't stack tho, I'm having it proc every 3-5 seconds and the buff lasts 10 seconds.

Edit: proc buff is given off of the 1 hour buff you get upon looting called "Wind Powered"

My 50 ish characters can't seem to even though they are closing level 50ish rifts.

Close one of each type of rift for a Feat of Strength only available during this event. Achieved on my 32 druid today so most should have access to this.

Each rift awards a different buff. So far Barrens is Fire, Stonetalon is Stone/Earth, Hillsbrad is Lightning(Nature) and Thousand Needles is Water.

The quests are repeatable but you can only turn in one of each element per day.

I have done this now on several characters.. only my 70s and 80s can ever loot, even though my younger ones are closing rifts the same or higher level than they are.
They are getting the buffs, so they should be qualifying.

I have tried bug reporting, but no petitions are being answered.

I do not have any addons to mess it up either.

of this latest patch, there is no feat of strength for the handing in the rifts...have done this 6 times, no feat of strength..further some of these rifts wont even let you click them after killing all the elementals..way to go for bad patch writing skills blizz..shame blizz are so far up their own bums they can't see just how bad their coding is at times

is this gonna be like scourge invasion event when the naxx things come around and have thos mobs spawn around and get the necroshards then cash them in for some cool armor.....god i miss scourge invasion
