Fun fact:

The three Monocles called Jeweler's Ruby Monocle, Jeweler's Sapphire Monocle and Jeweler's Emerald Monocle are the same colors as the third generation of Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.

At first I thought that these monocles would be a gold mine, but the mats to make them on the AH cost more than the going AH price of the monocles them selves.

Volatile Water: 17g x 50 = 850g
Ocean Sapphire: 58g x 3 = 174g
Elementium Bar: 16g x2 = 32g
Total: 1056g
Cheapest on AH at this time: NA (because nobody will buy them for more that the material cost)

Why would I spend 50 volatile water to make a vanity item with no unique properties (there are much cheaper versions that look the same) when I could use that volatile water to make almost TWO dreamcloths on my tailor?

Maybe some day, when volatiles are cheap as dirt, this item will be fun. Until then, it is just a big waste of materials.

On my server, I am able to craft these for 180g, and have sold them for 2k each. I have added these to my regular crafting rotation, one at a time, because 1000% profit is very nice.

This item appears to have been changed in the patch to finally give it a blue colour (as well as the Ruby and Amber versions - Emerald has been replaced by Amber)

BTW: What kind of cr*p is this... None random enchant, none nothing... just vanity cr*p who uses a lot of materials just for nothing. Forewarned are the jewelers....

We create these for the same reason we kill the whale shark... because we can.. and we often enjoy it... it is one of if not the only BoE blue useable by a lvl 1 bank alt... it is an obvious gold sink... in fact my bank mage has one of every color... although the red one is what she has equipped with her embersilk dress...

Until that point, even for a bank alt, people will opt for a cheaper alternative (Like the High Society Top Hat) and these will be passed over and forgotten.

Except of course that the crafted top hat isn't actually in game yet and we're already two major patches through Cataclysm. What's to say that when it actually gets implemented that it won't be cost prohibitive to create? That is of course if it ever actually gets implemented at all.

These monocles are vanity items. There's nothing forcing you to create any of them. There's other material sinks in the game too like Black Embersilk Gown (only 8 volatile fires but it also needs a chaos orb) and Authentic Jr. Engineer Goggles (only two hessonites) that are only meant for dress-up in town. Well, the engineering goggles are also used to purchase Sparkling Cogwheel but I'm trying to make a point!

Oh and the true cheaper alternative to any of the jewelcrafting monocles is the Noble's Monocle. You can get that by doing the Shattrath fishing daily for a few months and hoping that the PRNG loves you.
