I parked one of my chars here the night before the patch and about 4-5 hours after the realms came back up the Matriarch spawned and dropped the hatchling so I think its safe to say that this is a guarenteed drop assuming that you catch the matriarch before anyone else does. Happy hunting :)

The drop rate does seem to be 100%, I had 1 kill and it dropped earlier tonight. He spawned towards the back of the cave by the raised area thats surrounded by water. He spawned just next to the water in the back of the cave. Hope this helps.

Found it first try, just walked into the cave and there it was. Strange thing was there were a ton of dead mobs around like someone had just been there.

Don't know if it's specific to this hatchling, but every now and then it does a little roar (complete with animation). Sounds like the carrion bird aggro noise.

Picked this little guy up not two mintues ago. Farmed him for 4 consecutive hours, and got nothing. Decided to check just in case, and there she was, sitting on the pedestal like rock formation. I'll be checking back again in a few hours to confirm her spawn time, but if that DK from earlier got her when i logged off, the timer is indeed 5-8 hours.

Edit: Wow this thing sold as soon as i hearthed for 5k gold. Definitely worth the farming.

For some reason I was under the impression that the raptor spawned on the raised platform in the center of the cave, so after 3 days of camping, I decided to work on my staves skill by beating on some nearby raptors while I waited....I ran up the cave toward the enterance and killed 3 raptors, looted them...and found the pet, I was very confused then i realized that Razormaw Matriach was one of the 3 I killed Razormaw Matriach looks identical to an elder razormaw (or atleast to me it did).

So note: Razormaw Matriach can spawn anywheres in the cave.

I was farming this little guy a few days ago, so I parked my character in the cave and spammed my /target macro at the 15 minute/30 minute/hour marks. I went AFK for a bit and came back a few minutes after 8 and saw she was up, but by the time I figured out where she was, someone else got her. The next day I killed her a little past 4 AM and got this little pet, and now, with all the other raptors hatchlings except the Razzashi, I'm two pets away from Lil' Game Hunter!

The matriarch spawns in three different spots from all the times I've come across it.

First is on the little cliff/edge which everyone knows about. Now if you stand on the end of that ledge facing forward (so the drop is in front of you) one of the other spawn points is to the right, just across the water on the ramp that goes up.

The final spot is yet again, facing forward on the ledge but this time go left through the tunnel and you will come across a little pond in the pond is the other spot (along with a chest that spawns there too)

Just a few words of warning:

If you like me have parked a low lvl alt to get this for your main, you should be aware of the fact that he will scream for bakup and all the other dinos in the near area will start to attack you, so make sure what ever char you park here is able to fight with 4-5 other dinos while you kill the Rare.

If you wonder how I manage to handle this surprise: I barely managed to kill the rare, and loot him before i got killed by the others, i was lucky but it was a close call.

Note that the Razormaw Matriach can spawn anywhere in the cave, so keep running around to find her.

As this little hatchling can be quite lucrative I was just wondering, has anyone tried to learn it and still killed the Matriarch and got it on a drop, or is it only when you dont have it that it drops?

If no one tried it, I just got it on my first travel there, and will park my sweet Dranaei tail at the cave and log in tomorrow. that should be just about time enough for her to spawn again so I can see. I havent learnt it yet though.

Later than I expected and hoped for but I just found the Matriarch again and after putting up a short but brave fight she was laid to rest, and I was able to adopt yet another hatchling (cant learn it though if anyone ever got that idea), which will go to the highest bidder.
So, if anyone doubted, you are able to learn the pet, and still farm it for profit.

Fly to Menethil, go to Ravasaur Matriarch. Destroy if available.

Quickly run back to Menethil, take the boat to Theramore, scout for Dart. Destroy if available.

Run up to Wailing Caverns, The Barrens and seek out Deviate Ravager and Deviate Guardian (INSIDE THE INSTANCE!). Run in, destroy, run out, reset. (I do this one when I have time, due to the fact that it is a zone drop and may take a while. Same applies to the Gundrak Hatchling.)

Run up north to Takk the Leaper. Destroy if available.

Run south to Ratchet, take the flight path to Un'goro Crater. Search for Ravasaur Matriach. Destroy if available.

Hearth back to someplace (Dalaran in my case)Fly to Rebel Camp, travel to Zul'Gurub. Go near raptor boss (Bloodlord Mandokir) and destroy Razzashi Raptor (will ALWAYS be available). Run out and run back in (from what I've read, all but bosses reset once you step out then in. I cannot confirm this) and the mobs should reset.

Do battlegrounds, Ulduar, instances, whatever.

Rinse and repeat.

Keep in mind that you can buy the Obsidian Hatchling from Breanna (store next to Exotic Mounts vendor) for 50g.

EDIT: Also, all raptors GENERALLY respawn every 5-8 hours.

Get "Silver Dragon" addon, it will warn you as soon as any rare mob in the game is within your range, download it from Curse or smething, very usefull addon.
You wont ever need another /target "random rare mob".

Found Razormaw Matriarch today as a corpse at 8:21 (guildmate had just killed her lol). Logged back in at 1:21 and waited. Spawned at 1:43 and killed her and got the pet ^.^

Was parked at 70, 30 as others had requested (and where I had seen her corpse), but this time she spawned on top of the peninsula.

Hatchlings: Leaping, Darting, Razormaw, and Ravasaur Hatchlings no longer drop from their associated rare creatures. Instead, there are now rare nests that spawn which contain these hatchlings. For example, the Leaping Hatchling can now be found in Takk’s Nest rather than as a drop from Takk the Leaper.

Personal Notes:

Both the nests and rare spawn raptors can be up at the same time.
Rare spawn raptors no longer drop the mini pets; they can only be obtained from the nests.
100% loot chance for the mini pets from nests.
Nests can only spawn near the location of the rare spawn raptors but not always in the same spot (almost certain). Example: Dart's nest can only be found around the location where Dart spawns even if it's not in the same spot where it last spawned.
Nest spawn timer is about the same as rare spawn raptors on LIVE realms.

I was searching for tin in this cave when I got attacked by an Elder Razormaw when I started to mine. Looted it and saw the Razormaw Hatchling. Looked again. It was an ordinary Elder Razormaw.

Can't see any droprate on it here, or even that it drops from the Elder Razormaws, but obviously it does.

As of today, the Razmormaw, Darting and Leaping Hatchlings no longer drop from the rarespawn raptors. Instead they are lootable from a nest in the same area as before. Just picked up all 3 (Forgot to SS the Razormaw), and posted a picture of it.
Im still not sure what the spawntimer is on these nests, but probably the same as the rarespawns, so about 6-8 hours. Also, I dont know if the nests have random spawnpoints or not.

i have seen the 10 imes in 4 different spots in the cave. i have the coordnates but have lost them so i have to write them down again. i have killed the Matriarch several times but only have received jurassic wristbands. does she still drop since the nest have appeared or u can only find them in the nest now

What's the deal with this guy? Is he like a one-shot thing like Lil' Tommy's White Kitten? I regularly farm that region of Wetlands for Tiny Crimson Whelplings and I always check the cave and surrounding area for this drop. I've gotten one in I don't know how many tries. I found it at 71, 31 to the right side of the cave as you enter. I've checked the other coords left by other people and nothing. And never seen a nest near any trees... which trees? I check them all that are on that plateau and nothing! Grrrrrrrr!

I can confirm. It cannot drop from Razormaw Matriach anymore.
It ONLY drops in the nest inside the cave. 100% drop in nest.

I just got this pet to drop for me.. well ok not DROP as i didn't kill anything when i got it... I saw a nest laying on the ground in the cave when i went in with my 64 mage looking for ore... I clicked the nest and received the pet....

I ran around that cave for over three hours last night with no luck and logged out at dinnertime. When I logged back in the nest was literally right at my feet. Undoubtedly my most unbelievable stroke of luck in WoW to date.

When I logged back in the rare was in the cave too.

Found his nest also in the cave, have found this with others, that if you find rare up, it is likely his nest is around.

Confirmed to still be obtainable as of the 4.0.3a PTR (i.e. after the "shattering"). The zone has changed significantly, but Raptor Ridge and the cave are still there. Approximate spawn locations of the nest inside the cave (entrance at 69.1, 35.4):

67.7, 30.6 - Next to a pond, between the two protruding rocks toward the right.
70.0, 29.2 - On a large platform surrounded by a mote, where the Razormaw Matriarch spawns.
71.1, 31.0 - Between two boulders against the wall.
69.1, 31.5 - Down a slope and on a platform overlooking some water.

OK I am really confused. I was farming this in the days leading up to the patch with no success. After the patch, it seems to spawn every 2-3 hours always in the same spot on the ledge. I've now gathered 14 of them in the last 3 days.

same here, im farming like 15 of these a day, every time i log my alt its there, but strangely enough im not seemingly finding the same RS rate on darting leaping ravasaur

This one is pretty easy to find. I found the nest on the ledge surronded by water. I looked for two hours only found the matriach, killed her and ran around, no luck. Came back in about 2 more hours, didn't find him. I did a instance when I was in the cavern the nest and the matriach was there!

I've had the yellow skinned raptor (Corrupted Bloodtalon Scytheclaw from Durator) as my main pet since I hit level 10 the very first day of WoW, and he's remained as such ever since.

Figured I'd check for this while working on my Archeaology in the area, cause it'd be neat to have a little version of my long running pet. Ran in, immediately spotted the nest next to the Matriarch up on the ledge surrounded by water. That cute lil' bugger is all mine!

Confirmed this spawns in only one spot now, the rock surrounded by water and spawns approx. every 60 minutes. Very farmable.

An elite spawns on a much longer and separate timer very close but once killed, a low level can camp and grab the hatchling many times before the elite respawns and needs to be killed again.

I today, been looking on all nest places.

Heres what I got/found:

Rare mobs:

Dart x1
Takk x1
Razormaw Matriarch x2

Vanity Pets:

Miniraptor x1
Cucciolo Saltante x1
Cucciolo di Boccaguzza x2

I did not find Dart and the Hatchling on the same time. But I did with Takk and the Matriarch (both times).

What I did was log out in Un'guro, and check it for about 5 minutes.
After that I went to Dustwallow Marsh and checked that for 5 minutes aswell.
I headed my Wind Rider towards Nothern Barrens, and looked there, 5 minutes aswell!
My next move was going to Orgrimmar to take the portal towards Twilight Highlands to check the cave in Wetlands.

(I hope you can do the same)

In the cave I ran to the right, running straight big room, and both times I found the Matriarch with her nest up on the rocks.

I hope hordies can use this!

Edit 1b: I got a Darting pet, and I killed Takk.
Edit 1c: I got the Leaping pet about 15 seconds after killing Takk.

@ Mikegan: The Razormaw Matriarch is a rare, but not an elite, so it shouldn't be too difficult to kill.

I'd been checking on this nest off and on whenever I'm in the area, finally got it today. :) The Matriarch and nest were there toegether. Good luck guys!

Was putting a toon at each nest today. Just by accident I logged back the char where i had looted this earlier. And it was actually up again. That was 1 hour later.

So it actually have a very low minimum respawn timer.

7:00 PM Kael'Thas server.. I had just ran in, cleared it, and nothing was there. hung around for a little while, went in again, the nest was there at the Matriarch's ledge.
By the way, the Matriarch was NOT there when I cleared the cave the first time, nor did she spawn when I went back in. Conversely, I have seen her spawned with no nest.

ETA: My puter crashed at 10:10pm and by the time I got back onto wow it was 10:18 and there was the nest was on the Matriarch's ledge.

ETAA: Spawned again at 11:18 PM.

I managed to get two of these lovely little guys in one day. What I did was to go early in the morning when server activity was lower than usual, sneak in and take the first egg. The Matriarch dropped a good Cloak too. Anyway, I went out and, since they're all over the place, I started farming Ebon Whelps for the black and red baby dragons, hoping to get lucky. I wasn't in case you're wondering.

I came back in about 30 minutes, no respawn. Came back in an hour, found a chest with a Rare in it... that was fun. 90 minutes later, no nest yet again. The second nest spawned in about two hours after I looted the first. The two hour wait time was well worth it since it allowed both me and my girlfriend to get one of these.

Thought I'd do a post laying out the different color variants of the hatchings, having recently completed my collection. I won't get into where each one comes from, as each link has plenty on that.

It's interesting that some of the hatchlings have very defined stripes on their backs, while others have less defined stripes and more like splotches/lines of color.

They are:
Darting Hatchling - Orange with cyan stripes and green eyes
Deviate Hatchling - Purple with cyan stripes and yellow eyes
Gundrak Hatchling - Cyan with dark blue splotches. Yellow eyes.
Leaping Hatchling - Dark Cyan, almost slate with violet splotches and yellow eyes
Obsidian Hatchling - Olive and sort of grey-purple with aqua splotches and yellow eyes (and round pupils, oddly enough)
Ravasaur Hatchling - Lime green with orange stripes and squinting orange eyes
Razormaw Hatchling - Light yellow-orange with blue stripes and green eyes
Razzashi Hatchling - Red/Burnt orange with green splotches. Cyan eyes.
Lashtail Hatchling - as the unique reward from An Old Friend, your 'aka has a slightly unique model. She's a bit bigger than the others, and has a more defined "beak" color. She also has large round eyes with round black pupils, whereas the others have the classic dinosaur thin line pupils. That aside, her colors are almost identical to Razzashi's, but with much larger stripes.

Most of the hatchlings do an idle roar(more of a screech really) animation/sound, with a few exceptions. One wanders around and leaps back to you with a screech when out of range (Leaping), one will tear off running around with a dust trail a la Egbert (Darting), and Lashtail reportedly will play with the bones of your fallen enemies.
(I could have sworn I'd seen a raptor other than Darting do the run but couldn't get him to do it, would like confirmation if anyone sees it)

I need to play the Lotto today. i ventured to the wetlands as a LVL 61 to kill this thing a couple of times to try and get lucky...I got the hatchling on my very first kill....I couldnt believe it!

In case anyone didn't get the patch notes, the Matriarch no longer drops the hatchling. Instead, there is a small cliff-like platform surrounded by water. The hatchling can be looted from a next that rarely spawns there.

Appearantly Blizz has made this item a 100% "rare" drop with timed respawn. you get it every time you kill the Matriarch in the cave on Raptor Ridge. Unfortunatly it gets farmed so for hours at a time the matriarch isnt there. She has some sort of timed respawn rate now (sort of like "little Timmy" the boy selling the white Kitten in SW) Anyone know what the respawn time is for this beastie? I got lucky and found it at 355am (my time) one night but i've not been able to locate it in my last 5 trips there. I seem to find a certain blood elf there on occasion though... Farming...
