Confirmed to be dropped from mobs in Silverbrook.

I will post the source once i find it, it was on MMO-Champion, but I have to go back quite a few pages to find it again.

EDIT: Source is the official patch notes, under Inscription.

Exact line is:
Added a recipe for creating a different level 70 superior-quality off-hand item. Scribes will find the recipe is dropped from residents of Silverbrook.

Confirmed it went live in 3.1 patch. I got this off the ~75th Silverbrook mob I killed. the titles do not change, just the color will show as different. Random chance to make red, black, white or grey. (of my first 7, 4 were red)

Based on my own experience, and anecdotal reports, the drop rate is far higher than the 0.6% shown. Presumably this is because it only drops for scribes whilst the rate shown is for all kills.

IDK If this helps but I before I could grind for this item I had to make the residents of Silverbrook village RED to me

I did this by completing the following quests :

A Swift Response
A Dark Influence
The Failed World Tree

Probably a reference to the sequal of the book "Twilight" called "New Moon" in where the reader gets introduced to werewolves who are described as very large wolves.

The recipe itself is bind on pick-up but the off-hand book is bind on equip.
I have made two books so far and it seems each book will transform you in to a particular colored wolf (I've gotten white and grey).

Not a hard item to make (Ink of the Sea x5 and Eternal Shadow x3) so worth making as a novelty item for the wolf form rather than just as a lower level off-hand.

Obtained this along with three JC recipes today, this took about 34 kills which is in line with the 3-4% drop rate I was seeing on the other recipes. Probably the same with all the BoP profession items that drop off specific northrend mobs now.

Got it on my first kill with only 99 inscription. Seems there's no inscription level requirement to see it, and a fairly high drop rate.

You do NOT need to be hostile to the people of Silverbrook to get this technique to drop. Simply go south-east of Amberpine Lodge near the mountains and farm Silverbrook Hunters to get this technique. So alliance who can't be bothered to become hostile to the people of Silverbrook can simply go and farm Silverbrook Hunters at roughly 36, 67.

I went and "farmed" it on my 80 night elf death knight, pulled 4 Silverbrook Hunters, dropped a Death and Decay, hit a couple of buttons, and the adds died. Luckily, I got it first loot :D

When crafting these, keep in mind that the recipe in your profession window will only list the USE ability as a 'giant wolf.' As it is created one of four colors(red, black, white, and grey) is randomly assigned, so there is technically a large market for people wanting to collect all four. Market value should hold strong, as long as your buyers know that there are four colors to get.

I just crafted 12 of these, here are the suspicious results:

Rituals of the New Moon - Red x5
Rituals of the New Moon - Grey x5
Rituals of the New Moon - Black x1
Rituals of the New Moon - White x1

It's likely that each color has a 1/4 chance to be created, but if anyone else notices Black and White seeming rarer than Red/Gray then please let us know. :)

Also, as other users have pointed out in comments on some of the crafted books linked above, this is a reference to the novel New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (of Twilight fame), given the obvious connection of these 4 colors being used for the wolves in said novel (as well as most Blizzard-Devs being young teenaged girls.)

I just went after this. It dropped off the Silvermoon hunters after about 40 kills. It is a bop pattern, and I'm sure only inscriptionists are the only ones to see it. I highly doubt the drop rate stated is correct. Now to see if they sell.

As I entered Silverbrook from the south I started killing mobs in a counter-clockwise fashion. Found mine before I made a complete loop. Book was dropped by a villager, so I'm assuming any Silverbrook Inhabitant can drop it. Very easy for an 80 Sprest.

FYI: Selling books for 75g on my server easily.

Got this technique as 66 shaman. Mobs took me about 5 min to kill though, so after a few my friend came to help. Dropped after about 50 kills. Crafted 6 of these: 3 white ones and 3 black ones

Dropped for me after 3 Silverbrook Defenders. Either I'm VERY lucky or the drop rate is higher on them (they're the mobs fighting the Conquest Hold Marauders).

Edit: Just made 3 of these books and got one black, one white and one red.

Regarding farming it: A capable scribe can get this pattern as early as lvl 70. (Earlier, if they have help.)
Unable to get help farming it, I took my Lv. 70 DK (blood spec and crappy gear) out to the Silverbrook hunters and started killing. The mobs were still orange for her, but she was able to take them down without much difficulty. The technique dropped in about half an hour, after 35 or so kills. I made my way around the camp, trying to only pull one hunter at a time. The hunters currently don't hit very hard on plate, but less armored classes might need to be more cautious if they're trying to farm this solo.

I've leveled mostly by doing dungeons and BG's on my scribe, so to get this item I had to get Silverspine hostile first (I'm Alliance). Having done no quests in Grizzly Hills before I've searched around till I figured out the complete questline to get them Hostile. Doing the following steps got them hostile for me, starting fresh.

The first questgiver is Lieutenant Dumont in the building in Amberpine Lodge. You need to be level 73 to get these quests.

This opens up the following new questline that starts at Sergei in Silverbrook. Before I did those I also did Wolfbane Root, but I don't know if it's required (it's unavailable after they're hostile though).

At the last quest you should have gotten the drop Mikhail's Journal starting this questline:

After this the NPC next to Gryan (Private Arun) continues the questline:

After turning in last quest the Silverbrook NPC's were hostile to me. I had 19 quests done in Grizzly Hills at that point. I didn't reach a certain rep anywhere, or changed anything else afaik. I'm quite sure you always have to do the quests up to A Swift Response, after that it seems that you just need to do a few random quests to turn them hostile.

Had mobs that were named Silverbrook and who were already red. So since I was a mage I did the standard mage thing and aggroed 4 yadda yadda yadda.

Well the journal dropped and so did the above item in question the recipe book.

So just go to this spot and farm and you will get it nuff said.

Just confirming the above post by Thistlefur - I followed his remarks and farmed up the Technique in about 30 minutes or so. The worst part about all this is running between mobs for the next kill :). Very easy, very quick, and as grinds go, quite pleasant.

Yeah, drops with no problem. I realized this was one of the last inscription skills I needed to learn before I knew all inscription skills, so I went to farm it. The third guy I killed dropped it.

OK this finally dropped for me, from one of the mobs in Silverbrook. I did try to get it from both spots: Silverbrook and the across the river, where the Hunters are. For me it dropped off a Silverbrook Villager. This was my third attempt at grinding until I got it and I must have killed a couple hundred Silverbrook folk before it dropped. I was beginning to wonder if it ever would. :) I would just say be patient, very patient. I put myself in a couple of random dungeoun queues as well, just to break the monotony. Good luck, and persevere! - unless your sanity is at stake, in which case have a break, make yourself a cuppa and come back to it later. :D

...oh and for all those show-offs who get it on their like second kill: "I curse you to have rubbish drop rates from now on!", or maybe I'm just jealous, who knows. ;-)

I've made around 10 of these and only had one white and one black the rest were most red with a few greys. Again a very small sample the white and black do seem to be a bit rarer

After noting the relogging 'trick' mentioned here, I did so immediately after Escape from Silverbrook and everybody (including Katja) but Sergei, Envoy Ducal and Caged Prisoner were hostile.
Must be weird coming in to Silverbrook on the early quests and see your alliance buddies killing what appear to be friendlies.

The problem with that zone is that there are many fewer mobs. With a drop rate this low, you really want to keep moving. I'm proving to be at the tail of the curve and I must have killed several hundred in Silverbrook with no drop yet. Very frustrating.

Farmed it up on my lv72 hunter after about 15-20 minutes from the Silverbrook Hunters, a little southeast of Amberpine. I picked that spot because I wasn't high enough level to start the chain to make the other Silverbrook mobs hostile to me.

The drop rates here are probably not correct because of people killing those mobs without having inscription. At least everyone I asked (including me) got this in 10-15 minutes which doesn't really sound like a 1-2% drop rate.

A note for Alliance: If you're too low-leveled to start the chain which will turn the (initially Ally-friendly) townsfolk hostile, find a higher-leveled friend who's done it before to party with you and kill them. They'll stay friendly with you even under attack, but you can loot them when they die.

Agreed. This dropped in about 10-15 minutes on my inscriptionist(s). Was fun with my Engineer boomkin zooming through the town with Starfall running and mowing down mobs left and right.

This may or may not be true, but certainly seemed to apply for me.

As a scribe (scriviner as someone stated above) the drop chance definitely seemed higher than 3% for these mobs, but i got mine on the first mob that actually shape-shifted into her worgen form. Prior to her, all my kills were too fast (or they were too slow) to change form.

Might just be a coincidence....>.>

well i finally got my death knight to 68 yesterday and after exploring all of northrend (very slowly), I came to amberpine to get this as was my goal for a while now. I found last night my ghoul and I should only take on 1-2 of the trappers at once and I have probably clocked in 20 or so kills. I will keep at it. Maybe it helps if I'm 70 to wear the thing to begin with :)

as a 68 mage, went there with a lvl 85 pally, he passed on loot, 10 kills later the pattern dropped.

easier to have two ppl, one pass on loot, then you dont have to loot anything, whoever is passing on loot can see when an item, green+ has dropped on a body by being able to loot it, while passed on loot.

Further Confirmation. Mine took me a bit to find on my 85 Druid (525 Insc). I needed 23 more recipes (22 are from books of glyph mastery) so I set out to do this one. First tried south of amberpine for about 30 min and had no luck (respawn was far too slow it seemed). Went to silverbrook village and about 15 min later had my book! Of course, Random drop is random! Lets hope you, yes you, the one reading this, has good luck and find it fast!

Since only 1 post alludes to this, I thought I would post about how to get this technique as a class/level 85 that can 1 shot these mobs. I farmed the hunters for this on my warrior for 3 hours before I finally read Deez's post on the matter of letting them transform into worgens at 40%. I decided to try that and I got the recipe in 6 kills compared to the 1500 kills previously. Seems like transforming adds the recipe to their loot table.

Trappers, at least, don't need to transform to get this drop. As a matter of fact, I never saw a Trapper transform, only Villagers, and my drop came from a Trapper after about 40 minutes of farming in Silverbrook. The transformation tip may up the drop possibility from Villagers. I killed many of them too, transformed and not, and threw in Defenders for good measure.

Farmed Silverbrook for about 45 min and no luck at all. Decided to go over to Forest's Edge Post to kill the hunters and dropped on the third kill there. I did let them transform if I could, as it was easy to one or two shot them as an 85 DK. Can't confirm if there was any change in loot tables.

I was looking to farm this myself to complete my inscription skill list on my shaman. After doing the Escape from Silverbrook quest, I ran back to Silverbrook to try and farm the NPCs there, since I was having no luck with the hunters southwest of Amberpine Lodge.

Finding them with green nameplates and un-targetable with my offensive spells I tried the relogging suggestion I'd found in these comments. After trying twice with the NPCs still in the same state I ran in and they started attacking me.

Needless to say single-target spells would not work, I had to use lightning shield, searing totem, magma totem, the elemental totems, thunderstorm and earthquake to attack them. After the second group were killed, the technique dropped. I was pleasantly surprised.

So it seems this is still a bit glitched even this late into cata. It was pretty funny though =)

I got this with 1/75 Inscription, took 309 kills.
With a level 78 DK so most of the kills transformed just before death (I suppose the perfect speed, mobs die in 2-3 seconds)

Now to see the profits.

I don't know how or why, but I went out there HOPING I was hated by them so that I could kill them. In fact, I was and so I began. Took me roughly 15 min. I killed no more than 40 but no less than 25-30. Recieved it off of the corpse of a Silverbrook Defender. I also recieved the following items: Spalline di Halgrind (...of Power), Gambe di Voldrune (...of Shadow Protection), and Tiara di Foscogelo (...of Intellect).

I am the one who is usually never lucky with drops. Seeing some comments about the hunters are the one to go for, but no hunters where in Silverbrook, I started taking out those defenders instead. "IdonaeofKilrogg" said he got it off a defender, so I started killing defenders. After 10 mobs I got it.
Now, I don't know if I was finally lucky on a quick drop for once, but I got it off a defender. No transformation from them either. Just ran around and dotted all of them up with my priest, and then started looting.

As a level 84 scribe, I returned to Grizzly Hills to grind for this recipie. I started the quest chain above to turn residents of Silverbrook red. However to my delight I received a drop before completing these 2 quests:

It dropped from a Silverbrook Hunter in the quest area southeast of Amberpine Lodge. This leads me to believe that the drop rate is currently not as bad as described for an appropriate skill-level scribe.

After making several of these I noticed a very even assortment of red/back/grey/white, so I do not believe the odds of one color is weighted over another. Still a great vanity item, and a good money maker for a scribe with the recipie.

I got this from the Silverbrook Hunters near Amberpine Lodge - I didn't have to do any quests to get the Silverbrook mobs hostile or anything. I farmed for... 10 minutes? If that? I suppose I got lucky. But, yes, the Hunters work just as well as any of the Silverbrook mobs for those who don't want to do the quests to get them hostile.Good luck! :)

I am playing on my Horde Tauren Druid which is level 61 AND have inscription as one of my professions. I have checked my WotLK inscription training and it shows 75/75. I have read all of the comments here and can't help but wonder what miracle piece of information everyone is leaving out! I have gone to both areas in Grizzly Hills and have now killed over 1000! mobs. I'm surprised Silverbrook hasn't called the UN about the number of kills I have! 'Rituals of the New Moon' simply will NOT drop for me so I'm ignoring all of the comments that say "Oh! I got it in 5 kills!", and wonder if someone could tell me the obscure box I haven't checked yet.
