For those who are wondering, no, this mount will not count towards your 50, even if you do get it before learning anything else.

As of this date, this mount counts as a Vehicle and thus (just tested this):

You won't get dismounted if dazed by a mob
You can mount it while in PvE or PvP combat
If you dismount while in the air, you get slowfall

Enjoy your free PvP escape! :)

Limitations are however:

Can only be flown in the zones Ice Crown, Storm Peaks and Sholazar Basin
60% Flying speed
If you log out while in the air, you will fall down upon logging in, because the mount disappears

Enjoy getting nowhere in all the time in the world! :)

Also, if you accidentally fall from a great height or get knocked off while in mid-flight for whatever reason, you can mount up on this while you're falling. Came in very handy when I accidentally fell from the cliffs in Winterspring down into Sholazar Basin (don't ask).

You can actually dive with this mount! land on the ground and walk in the water WITHOUT flying. then you will get down in the water without dismounting.

Can we narrow this down a lil ? 77 DK (friends toon) with no flying skill got the loaner riens , is this a mater of not having a flyer , or no 280% skill , or Cold Weather Flying ? I'm afraid to get "too" skilled to acuire this lil treasure !

Another cool fact bout it, but not so useful.

If you jump into another vehicle while mounting the windrider, the wind rider will still follow you around.

use after activating https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/item=30847 for the most epic way to mount in the game.

Also after doing so, the mount will have a parachute attached as u fly, makes it look pretty pathetic, lol

Since this mount does count as a vehicle and not an actual mount I was able to complete the quest in Storm Peaks to get the tool in the middle of the mine field without having to walk through it myself. I was also able to complete the achievement Mine Sweeper(https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/achievement=1428) without getting the knockback effect and getting dismounted.

I was using this guy today ... and i started some quest were i needed to mount onto a frostsaber
Anywho ... i did so , and my Loaner Flyer became a non-combat pet pretty much , just flew around with me , pretty awsum lol xD

Lol, funny that noone have noticed, but at can carry more then one person, I jumped on my mates Wind Rider :P I flew with it, pretty funny to control anothers flying mount :P My mate says he can't /dance, maybe because I'm on it. I have no problem dancing, tho :P

EDIT - i think you have to have a loaned mount as well though.

The idea of this mount is to give players who don't have the 1k gold they need for cold weather flying in northrend.

You can get this mount if you have basic flying skill, I'm not sure about epic flying skill, but if you don't pay for cold weather flying you can get this from the goblin in storm peaks.

A good idea, since storm peaks and icecrown Need a flying mount in order to move around, and not every player will have 1k gold at 77.

Also this mount is a same speed at basic flying mount, so its no slower then those ones, and I used 60% speed all through TBC so it makes no difference to me, don't write it off just because you fear the idea of a 60% mount.

Some recent patch turned this baby from a vehicle, to a mount. well, still not really a mount as it requires an item to summon, and does not get added to your mount tab. But all the fun stuff, like having a vehicle bar, and a second passenger doesn't seem to work anymore :(

I acquired this on a 77 DK without even training basic (60%) flight skill. This is perfect for characters that just aren't worth the 2K gold required for flight + cold weather flying. Until 3.2 at least. ;)

As of patch 3.2, this item is no longer available from the vendor (unless there's a quest prereq), and can't be used. I had the item in my inventory and tried to use in Icecrown and got the message, "Can't use this item here." Went back to K3 and tried to use it in Storm Peaks and couldn't use it there either. Checked the vendor and he's missing his original flavor text.

As noted on the Loaned Gryphon Reins page this is currently broke as of 3.2. It only returns the message "You can't use that here." Apparently it still works if you buy or have bought the flying skills though. There are threads acknowledging this on the official forums, as of now there is still no blue notice I can find on this subject, guess we'll have to stay tuned for more info on this.

This item is broken after 3.2, at least on my character. Petitioning the GM said the developers are aware of the problem, but they didn't give an ETA on a fix. I'm curious if it only happened to people that already had the mount, or if the item is just broken for everybody? Can anyone else still use it?

I bought my regular flying and the loaner mount works just fine with no, cold weather flying... Not sure if this is a fix or not but, I'm up and flying =)

as of patch 3.2 this is bugged. It does not work in any of the zones specified. I tried destroying it and getting a new one but still the same bugged result.

Now works with crusader aura,I used the mount on my paladin. Before it didnt work because it was considered a siege vehicle.

Doesn't work in WotLK classic. I can mount, but it will not fly.
I have a character I specifically did not get cold-weather flying on because I wanted to see how this works. kinda bummed.
