This item is wonderful for leveling blacksmithing. I think it stayed orange for me until at least 415 blacksmithing, and the mat costs are very low. Also, the chestpiece disenchants quite nicely since it is a level 170 green. Great deal for the mats that you spend to make it.

Edit: When this comment was originally made, this recipe only required 4xCobalt Bar. With the 3.0.8 materials increase to 8xCobalt Bar and 2xCrystallized Water, this isn't quite as wonderful as it used to be. Still, when it was good, it was very, very good.

Can confirm it turns yellow at 415.

The plans drop from Venture Co. Excavators (https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/npc=28123) who can be found in Sholazar Basin.

To all Blacksmiths out there, save all your cobalt ore/bars for this recipe and you get straight to 415 spending only 4 cobalt bars / level. As grishnaar said, you need a total of 160 saronite ore/bars to level from 375 to 415.

Note that the same mobs also have a chance to drop the Heavy Frostweave Bandage Manual (https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/item=39152) which is BoP, so you might kill two birds with one stone. ;}

Im surprised no one commented on the droprate yet, as it is a pretty important thing (for me at least) to know.

Anyway, I wanted this for my level 72 alt warrior and I was lucky enough to talk a guild mate of mine into helping me. We cleared the camp just about 3 times before it dropped so although the droprate isnt too bad I still wouldnt recommend you going there alone if you are still low level for the area - eventhough you can most likely kill the mobs you will probably end up being frustrated because you hoped for the droprate to be higher (it could be of course - I might just have been unlucky). Not to forget, the mobs are pretty close packed in the camp so you will get multiple mobs quite a few times which isnt exactly what you want if youre already having a hard time fighting singles.

Dropped for me on my first kill. You have several quests in the Venture Co. anyway, you're almost guaranteed to get it doing the quests you get from Nesingwarys, so don't forget to pick those up if you are of the required level prior to going for these.

Dropped for me tonight off my 6th Excavator kill while doing the Nessingwary quests. Was going to grind it out later when im 80 but this works for me =]

Sounds like the droprate is about 5% if you are a BS. I killed about fifteen on my 72 pally, 368/450 BS, before a shammy came by doing the quest. I asked if he'd group with me (to speed things up) and we got it on the first kill.

Oddly, I got the heavy frostweave book (a low chance world drop) on the third kill.

For those of you who it took a long time for, at a 5% drop rate, there's still an unlucky 7.7% of smiths who won't get the drop after 50 kills -- and 1% who won't get it after 90. But just remember, drops are conditionally independent so each new goblin has the same chance!

This took 58 kills to get for me, not to painful, only about 25 minutes. No real downtime at all as they are really easy to kill just keep circling the camp.

Also got me about 7% of my level (77-78) while rested

Decided to test how profitable it was to buy cobalt bars and make this chestpiece of them and then disenchant it.

I bought all stacks for 50 - 55g each.
I ended up with 22 stacks of bars. Spent about 1100 - 1200 gold totally.

Result (disenchanted into):
25 > 2 Infinite Dust
21 > 3 Infinite Dust
21 > 4 Infinite Dust
15 > 5 Infinite Dust

12 > 1 Greater Cosmic Essence
13 > 2 Greater Cosmic Essence

2 Dream Shards

38 Greater Cosmic Essence x 25g (server price) = 950g
278 Infinite Dust x 4.5g (server price) = 1251g

Total money put into it: Approx. 1100 - 1200 gold.
Outcome: Approx. 2200 gold.

Doubled the cash.

Half of these posts are pointless.

It simply -doesn't matter- if you got the plans after a couple kills. That has NOTHING to do with the drop rate.

Mobs SPAWN with their drops. Absolutely NOTHING you do will change what they drop. "Being a blacksmith" will not change the drop rate, and just because YOU got lucky and killed a mob that dropped it doesn't mean "the drop rate is higher than listed".

The recipe drops from a single mob. You can loot it even if you aren't a Blacksmith and don't have high enough Blacksmith level to learn it (which is different than some of the Lich King recipes where you MUST have the level req to loot it). That really is all that should be commented on this page.

This is indeed a sweet recipe for leveling blacksmith.

Just went to Sholazar Basin to farm the recipe, took me about 5 minutes to get the drop. Killed about 20 mobs so wasnt to shabby. ;o)

As of patch 3.0.8, the material requirements for this plan have been more than doubled, from 4 cobalt bars to 8 cobalt bars and 2 crystallized water. It may still be worth making for skill points, but it's no longer the free ride to 420 it was before.

It's Patch 3.0.8. I just started farming these today but after clearing the camp over and over, these plans did NOT drop. Be warn if you are considering farming this.

I farmed bs till 390 using trainer recipes, then I followed the directions here and got this plan droping from an excavator in my third kill. The mats of this plan, even after the patch that raised the cost, still a very good deal. Trainer's recipes uses 12 cobalt bars at 390 skill. This plan still a mere 8 bar till 415 skill, a reasonable cost IMO.

I just farmed mine. I got it on my 31st kill. (Was at 390 BS skill).

Also, on a side note. This is really only useful to make between 390-400 (Once you hit 400, start making https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/spell=54949 until 405). Once you hit 405, make these again until 415. Assuming you only want to use Cobalt.

Just want to pass on an apparent stealth buff to the drop rate of the reinforced cobalt patterns. I’ve been farming missing recipes on my alts (passing the time until Mists) and today was my blacksmith’s day. I got the helm, legs and chest patterns (already had shoulders) in less than 20 kills each, and the helm actually only took 9 kills. Get to farming in case Blizz reverts back to the old drop rates! :D

Just got this pattern to drop today, 6/17/2012 in patch 4.3.4.

There are roughly 35 Venture Company Excavators that spawn in and around Swindlegrin's Dig. Basically, anything that's not an Ogre in the camp is a mob that will potentially have the plans. There are human, goblin and troll varieties as far as I can tell. They do not appear to share spawn points with the Ogre Venture Co. Ruffians so you should feel free to kill on the Excavators.

The respawn rate seems pretty good given the number of spawns in the area. It didn't seem to me that I was waiting for mobs to spawn.

I got it after 97 kills. Those kills were perpetrated in between LFD runs, so I didn't have a lot of time waiting for spawns.

This dropped for me as I was doing the quests associated with the mobs you need to kill for it. First round of quests, no drop. Went back to grab next quest in the same area and after about 15 minutes, one of the excavators dropped it.
I have TONS of cobalt ore, so this is great to level BS from 406 to about 416 when it turns yellow I believe. But, since I have a surplus of ore, I'll make these for as long as possible because I'll just send the chest pieces to my alt to disenchant them.
Really easy, cheap, and efficient way to level BS and get gold or disenchants.

Can confirm, got this on my 5th kill exactly. It is now BOP, by the way. My BS is 390 and lvl 71.

Found this plan off Venture Co. Excavator as described. WOTLK Classic 12-4-2022. I was level 71 and BS 378, took about 10 minutes of grinding (I had help).
