An interesting tanking neck, basically a point-for-point upgrade of Gluth's Missing Collar from Naxxramas.

Whilst the stamina on this ring isnt overly huge compared to some of the other neck options, and it has no defense, the Block Value on this ring is -enormous-, and is the highest amount of Block Value you can get on your neck slot.

For this reason, I'd recommend every Prot Warrior farm it and use it in their Block Value Kit for tanking normal 5-mans and crowds of weaker hitting mobs (my rough guide being that any mob that hits you for under 2000 damage is better tanked in Block Kit rather than Stamina/Avoidance). It's an excellent tanking necklace when you're facing the less heavy hitters, possibly the best available as long as you have enough defense/stamina on other gear.

That said though, don't use this for the really heavy hitters. Get one of the higher stamina necklaces like the Mark of the Ravenguard or Barbed Choker of Discipline, or a heavy avoidance/defense necklace like the Strength of the Untamed, for tanking raid-boss types.

At level 70 1% block chance = 7.9 block rating.

That means this necklace give you +2.4% chance to block.

While this neck might have less stamina than other neckpieces and be missing defense, it is the only necklace in the game outside of Naxxramus with both shield block and block value, both of which are the highest of any neckpiece in the game. Nothing else comes close for either.

From a warrior's perspective, if you have at least 490 defense and stamina already, this neckpiece is incredible. The extra block value will boost your shield slam a bit, giving you more aggro while doing additional damage at the same time.

If you don't have the stamina or defense, however, I'd stick to using this just on trash until you can beef up those stats. Your healers will thank you for it.

As a proc. tank I was using https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/item=25809 (Maimfist's Choker) before. I now use the Steam-Hinge and IMO it is way better. The +2.4% block is huge. Easy to get and drops @ the same place https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/item=27804 (Devilshark Cape) does. So farm both of these great tanking items @ the same time!

If you're farming heroics for the hundreds of badges you need post-2.3, you definitely want to maximize your Block Value.

This one of the best +Block Value items you can get, pre-Zul'Aman and 25-man raids.

732 damage off each hit is massive. Turn on the Auto-blocker and you take 992 off each block. 8 Holy Shield blocks and that's a whopping 7,932 damage mitigated -- nothing to laugh at.

Note that generally choosing block value itemization will lower your overall avoidance. Make sure you fill up your other item slots/sockets with enough to reach uncrittable/uncrushable.

I think as a protect spec warrior 400 block is about what you need (maybe a little less or maybe a little more). The + to block (chance to block) is also nice.

I have around 515 def depending on my gear and around 12K health and 400 block...

so it would be cool to push this past 430. This allows me to do more "DPS" with my shield and it also allows the tank to hold more threat, since SS does extra threat.

But there are some mobs in Kara that do a TON of damage to the tank (with around 14K armor) ... so for those stam is one of your most important stats... the stam on this is a little low.

I guess it depends on if you're stacking avoidance or not. Stamina is close enough to disregard in the context of comparison. SHCoV plays nice with Shield Slam for added TPS and increase Block%, but SotU ups Defense significantly and increase avoidance by an entire 1%... equivalent of the Night Elf racial ability...

I'm inclined to believe more dedicated tanks would opt for the SHCoV for the increased Block% and mitigation, but then again, I'm not sure how well the Defense Bonus on SotU would increase Block/Parry/Dodge individually, especially if you're already at the 490 mark.

Thoughts?

pushing def past 490 in exchange for any 'block-booster' as it is in this situation, doesnt seem to be a good idea for either warriors or palas.
the benefits from getting def past cap are marginal compared to getting a good amount of the other stats they need in almost any case.
