Wowhead Guide with Map & Elemental type Locations

This was the limited time event achievement added for the Cataclysm Pre-Launch Events.

To get this achievement, you need to have had each of the above mentioned buffs at any time (not required at the same time though). Each buff is obtained by being around an Elemental Rift of that kind when it closes. And you can have all the buffs at the same time. :D Each buff lasts 1 hour.

Rifts Details:

Elemental Rifts (Click for locations) will be appearing all over the game world. This includes Northrend AND Outland.
Elemental Rifts lose health when one of their elemental creatures is killed. If the rift has 10 Health, killing 10 of the elementals it spawns will kill/close it.
These Elemental Rifts are level specific in relation to the item they drop. So, for example, all level 80 characters will have to kill rifts in Northrend locations to get the daily quest item that spawns when the rift dies, while level 60 characters can kill rifts in Silithus, Western Plaguelands, or other level appropriate zones that spawn rifts.
Rifts started with a 60 minute respawn timer and a 10 minute despawn timer (i.e. if not killed within this time from appearing, it goes away for an hour). As the event progresses, the time on respawn will decrease (exact decrease amounts depend on the event phase).

Rift Loot:

Each time a rift closes, it leaves behind a loot-able floating item called Mysterious Device (Click for locations). This automatically gives a daily quest called Hammering It Out that rewards some XP and/or gold.

Buff Details

Earth Powered from Rumbling Elemental (Click for locations) - Each melee attack, ranged attack, harmful spell or healing spell has a chance to heal you for 2% of your maximum health.
Fire Powered from Searing Elemental (Click for locations) - Each melee attack, ranged attack or harmful spell has a chance of engulfing the target in flames, dealing X damage over 15 sec (scales with level). Stacks 5 times.
Water Powered from Surging Elemental (Click for locations) - Each melee attack, ranged attack, harmful spell or healing spell has a chance to increase your Energy, Rage, Mana or Runic Power gain by 15%.
Wind Powered from Gusting Elemental (Click for locations) - Each melee attack, ranged attack, harmful spell or healing spell has a chance to increase your haste rating by X for 10 sec. (scales with level)

Confirmed Alliance/Neutral Northrend Rift Spawn Points

Air: Borean Tundra - Magmar, due north of the west end of the Fizzcrank Airstrip.
Earth: Storm Peaks - Gnoll camp due west of K3, east of the sleeping giant
Fire: Zul'drak - Reliquary of Pain, a bit east of the teleportation platform, in the empty field.
Water: Dragonblight - Wintergarde Keep, on the ramp leading down to the "middle tier" of the village.

Spawn timer seems to be about, or exactly, one hour from the previous spawn-in. There may be a 2-5 minute variance working here.

Despawn, if a rift is left alone, seems to be about 10 minutes, give-or-take.

Definitely an hour respawn timer.

As posted, you can get the buffs from closing Rifts anywhere, not just zones that are level relevant to you. This may not be the case to get the the daily quest.

Where I got mine:

Storm Peaks (Earth) - Just east of the sleeping Giant in the Gnoll camp West of K2 (36,81).
Dragonblight (Water) - Ruby Dragonshrine (49,50).
Borean Tundra (Wind) - North of the Air Strip (55,15).
Zul'Drak (Fire) - Near the Altar of Har'koa (61,67).

Co-ords might be slightly off. ^^

Netherstorm: 65, 50; 55,22, 30,64 (Wind); "30, 64" is next to Area52, you may check this one first.
Nagrand: 27, 61; 33, 41 (Earth).
Zangarmarsch: 46, 60 (Water)
Hellfire P. : in Falconwatch.

Most of these effects can be seen from a very far distance.

Wind - whirlwinds, like the Druid spell.
Water - a Blizzard effect.
Earth - much dust and a "moonfire" like effect.

There is a Water Elemental Rift in Ymerheim in Icecrown, JUST north of the tower of Mordrethar. I hope that helps.

Also, the Fire Rift east of the Reliquary of Pain in Zul'Drak is confirmed.

You can get this achievement at 80, while killing the Outland level 70 rifts. You can't loot the items dropped, but you can still get the buffs needed.

No, not randomly. They all spawn at the same exact time, so find out when ONE is open because it means the rest are open for 10 minutes max.

For the achievement it is NOT level specific. You can kill rifts anywhere and obtain the buff! I just got mine and two of my rift kills was in old world zones. The only thing that is level specific is the daily!

They seem to have spawned at same time only first time. after that, they spawn one hour from time they were closed, which based on when they were closed, over time they do become staggered. so no they won't all spawn at once and close at once anymore

More info. The staggering actually doesn't seem random it seems consistent. at least on my server i've now gotten this feat on 3 alts using same path.

Camp in outlands in zangermarsh, north east of Cenarian Refuge. ~~Water spawns here 2 min before the hour every hour.~~
Go east to hellfire to Falcon Watch (horde) or Temple of Telhamat (alliance). If neither are up you can truck it to just east of honor hold or the dark portal itself..
As soon as Fire is down, head into nagrand to immediate area of nessinwary camp. ~~Earth will spawn here 3 min after the hour~~. If the ones at nessinwary aren't up there is another spawn point at Oshglun.
Hearth and from dalaran head east into crystalsong forrest. The big shrine directly east of "the unbound thicket" will spawn wind (74.5,62.2) ~~11 minutes after the hour~~.

Plot your course carefully and you will get all 4 in one run. worst case, you may miss fire and earth both if you arrive a little late to either. To reduce risk, you can skip fire and camp earth after water and then wind after for a guaranteed 3. All 4 is a tight fit when you try to squeeze fire in.

EDIT2: Seems that these events were tuned to happen every 30-45 min now instead of every 60. possibly do to forum qq? it has thrown my initial times off. however not the deviation between locations. IE whatever time it starts in number 1, the rest will follow in this sequence still. but do to a now off hour time, it will now hop around to various parts of the hour.

Edit3: Updated fire to reflect that temple of Telhamat and falcon watch are more efficent for the route. But still include other 2 locations since the town spawns will kill themselves off fighting with town NPCs and may not be up cause of this when you get to them.

Dunno about that one, cause I saw 2 fire spots from a distance in Everlook on my 72 Hunter, and when I got close, they all just vanished. From a distance (like 75+ yrds) I could target the elementals, but when I got close, just poof. Gone.

Is there any reason one would NOT get the buff?

I was fighting them of the same level (Northrend).
I was right on top of the rift as it closed.
The Mysterious Device showed up after I killed all the elementals.

I went to two different ones in the same zone (Wind, In the Tundra) and didn't get the buff from either. I DID have the Fire Buff, and I STILL had the device from the Fire Rift...could that be why?

EDIT: Why on earth would someone downrate this? It's a legitimate question and I'm wondering if it's a bug.

- In order to get the FEAT OF STRENGTH you just need to have the 4 buffs (not at the same time), which you can get from a rift anywhere. I just got the Feat of Strength having only gotten one rift in Northrend and the rest in Outland. You do not need to do Northrend rifts only to get the feat of strength at 80!

- In order to get the DAILY QUEST item you need to close a rift specific to your level (e.g. 80 needs to be in Northrend, 61 needs to be in Outland etc.)

Confirmed that you can get the achievement at 80 while killing the lower level rifts.

I killed mine in Hinterlands (Fire), Wetlands (Water), Burning Steppes (Earth), and Duskwood (Wind) and got the achievement no problem. So unless you really want the quest items, avoid the Northrend massacres and go for the Azeroth spawns. I had NO competition whatsoever for any of my rifts.

The daily quest has no effect on the Feat of Strength.

Even if you die or the buff(s) wear off you will still get the Feat of Strength.

Someone said if you were level 80 you could only get the Feat of Strength for killing the Northrend rifts. That is false. You can get the Feat of Strength by killing the rifts in Azeroth, Outlands, or Northrend.

All the rifts spawn at the same time with a 1 hour spawn time.
Easiest way is to camp at the site of a rift and wait.
After you killed one run around and spam this macro...

Found a random air one near Taunka'le Village. Killed the first fire one in Trymn's End. Then 1 hour later: Earth at E3 then ran at Obsidian Dragonshrine for Water then was going for the Airstrip when i found the last Air at Taunka'le.

They are tiny little rift dealies surrounded by 12 of their type of elementals. You might miss the rifts, but not the elementals surrounding them.

My theory about that:
The Rifts despawn after a certain time. But they only check, if their time has expired, if someone is close enough.
So you flying closer is causing this "check up".

The rifts spawn ~ every full hour on my Server (Area 52 EU). The first fire Rifts in Hellfire Penninsula despawned at XX:13:07 (hh:mm:ss).

Here are the spawn points I witnessed myself in Northrend:

Earth:
Valkyrion in Storm Peaks 25.1, 63.3

Fire:
Zeramas in Zul'Drak 21.1, 80.3

Water:
Scarlet Point in Dragonblight 74, 27.1

Wind:
Village with mobs that throw bombs (right side of the Glimmering Pillar) in Sholazar 55.9, 40.7

The exact point in each map may not be correct, but it's pretty much around that area. It'll be hard to miss it. They can be attacked by other mobs.

The crowd of elementals surrounding them tend to be more visible than the rifts themselves.

The rifts fluctuate with effects pertaining to their elements, for example the wind rift has lightning and cyclones. You can target the rifts to see how much health they have, but the rifts are not directly attackable. They lose hitpoints when the elementals are killed.

Confirmed: Respawns are approximately 1 hour from last spawn time. (Had to wait at Blade's Edge for the repop.)
Confirmed: Killing Outland rifts at 80 does yield the achievement.
Confirmed: The silly things can de-spawn on you while you're fighting them. There's no way to engage the rift itself in combat, so you may wind up killing a few elementals only to have the whole lot vanish on you before you pop the rift.

Anecdotal: I was assisting my server in Storm Peaks last night by flying around and pointing out rifts, then directing people to it and giving directions / coords to the Mysterious Device so that people could get their daily quest done. I had thought rifts could spawn at any of their locations over the course of an hour (thinking 4-5 rifts, 1 hour timers on each) but they felt far less frequent than that. It was more like one rift at any point in a given hour.

We found a second rift in-zone with 8 minutes left on my buff from the first rift we identified. Respawns are likely 1 hour from when the last rift spawned, not the despawn or kill time.

For what it's worth, you don't have to actually take part in killing any elementals from the rifts. You just have to be with in a certain range of the rift when it's closed in order to get the buff required for the Feat of Strength.

So if you AFK in the right spot, but forget to watch the time like I did, you may luck out anyway!

I was alt-tabbed for a small bit, and my friend was only a few feet away from me. She got the buff and got back a sec. too late. All was left was the item.

BTW it wasn't on the hour too. It was like at XX:40

Considering you don't have to be in Northrend to get the achievement from the rifts Outlands is a great spot since a lot of people are camping Northrend instead.

Being on one of the most populated servers, I decided to get my achievement in Outlands rather than Northrend where there are 80s swarming everywhere. At this time of the day, I was alone killing the elementals, but they are very easy to kill, even for a squishy clothie like me.
Couple hours and I got the achievement "Tripping the Rifts" at my first try.

Given high enough dps and not too many people camping the rifts, this is what I did to complete the feat in one spawn.

Set hearth at The Argent Stand in Zul'drak
Fly to either the wind rift at Borean Tundra or Dragonblight

Wait for the rifts to spawn and kill these 2.

Hearth, and kill the Fire and Earth rifts at Zul'drak and Grizzly Hills

However, since Zul'drak is really the most popular place for rift hunters (cause it's the only zone in Northrend with Fire rifts), you could also set your hearth at Star's rest/Taunka'le Village and achieve in the reversed order.

I did the following route for all my 80s (Horde), seemed the easiest and attainable within the same hour:

Cenarion Thicket, Terokkar Forest (right next to the moonwell)
Falcon Watch, Hellfire Peninsula (in front of the inn)
The Dread Mire, Zangarmarsh (near the middle pool)
Thunderlord Stronghold, Blade's Edge Mountain (near Rexxar)

If you can't find the earth rift there, try Bladespire Hold, which is just northwest.

For those of us lvl 80's that are attempting to close the rifts in both Kalimador and Eastern Kingdoms for less high lvl pvp contact, I have a few tips and a theory as well. If you've been trying to get these, you may have notice that when you run towards a rift out in the open, it will despawn when you get near it. I have noticed this personally as well.

I believe the reason for the despawn of these rifts is directly because of our level. I also believe that if a character of the appropriate lvl first engages the elementals, a level 80 can then proceed to also engage these elementals without risk of despawn. Of the rifts that i have closed on these 2 continents, the elementals were previously engaged in combat with appropriate lvl npc's that are already stationed at a given spawn location. So if you're doing this on the old world continents, try either to stick to the spawn locations with npc's that will engage the elementals, or run around the zone with a lowbie in tow, preferably it'd be nice for the lvl 80 to have a vehicle mount such as the chopper or travelr's tundra mammoth. Just to be safe, once you see the elemental graphic of the rift (aka the blizzard in the air for the water elementals) have your lowbie friend exit the vehicle and approach and engage the elementals before you yourself as a lvl 80 decide to rush in.

Hope this helps, and that a few of you can grant confirmation of this theory.

Will as Im finding more with my alts and people are updating the forums with more locations. You do not have to be grouped with the people killing the rifts, you just have to be within a reasonable (yet short) range of the rift when it dies to get credit. 80s DO get credit for killing the lowest level rifts for their Feat of Strength. A Water Rift just spawned just near the entrance to the Slithering Scar in Un'Goro Crater.

1.) Fly Shadowmoon Valley (Outland) Wildhammer Stronghold (Alliance) or Shadowmoon Village (Horde)

Be there at XX:55
Elementals will start to spawn at XX:00 (Full Hour) or somewhere on a 15 Minute Timer past the full Hour (xx:00 --> xx:15)
They spawn right in the Camp, so keep an Eye open. After you got the Elementals in STV -->

2.) Fly Terokkar Allerian Stronghold (Alliance) or Stonebreaker Hold (Horde)
Elementals should be right up there, kill em all, next -->

3.) Fly Nagrand Telaar (Alliance) or Garadar (Horde)
Again, Elementals are up... kill em, next -->

4.) Fly Hellfire Temple of Telhamat (Alliance) or Falcon Watch (Horde)
Last Elementals should be up here, kill em... and taadaa, done

Shouldnt take long... maybe 10 Minutes to complete all 4. And it DOES work at level 80.

You can get the achievement from killing any rifts in the world, not just Northrend ones. You do, however, need to kill a Northrend Rift to loot the daily quest item if you are level 80.

I killed Wind and Water rifts in Northrend, and had issues finding spawn points for Fire and Earth. I decided to try my luck in Westfall for Fire (Moonbrook), and Redridge for Earth (Lakeshire); low and behold, I found both easily and poof, achievement. :)

Rather disappointing so far. Seems the rifts spawn on the hour but the npcs, in my case, just trashed the spawns and no object appeared. The 10min respawn time should really be a little longer and I would guess 20mins at least. The time frame is just to short.

I just did some of my rifts in Azeroth. Easier as most were right in the towns.

Fire- Westfall (right in the town Sentinel Hill)
Earth- Redridge (right in the town of Lakeshire)
Water- Tanaris (A little further out. 60,30) Just parked myself right on the rocks near by and waited)
Wind- Did this in Terokker Forest. (To the east. Forget the area. But it was right by that building where all those moths are)

Of course there are many other spawns, but those were mine. Hopefully it helps anyone looking. :)

The Mysterious Device that spawns when you kill a rift stays up for 60 minutes. If you ever see one disappear, know that the rift of the same kind is about to spawn and will only stay up for about 10 minutes.

ALSO the rifts have 12 health, so it requires you to kill 12 elementals, not 10 as explained above.

I had two friends doing this with me, and we would split locations for each rift (the locations we looked at were the ones listed in the original post on this thread). I would take two locations that were close to each other to look, someone else two and so on. It was pretty effective.

Done it this morning, but I had to login several times to get the buffs.
Yesterday elementals spawned at 9.00 pm, I got to zul drak too late and could only grab the daily quest..at around 9.55 elementals spawned again, took fire at zul drak near the lake (spawns exactly into the rageclaw camp) and earth at grizzly hills (northeast corner of the map, near the stairs so zul drak)

This morning around 9 .10. went to dragonblight at aggramar camp, too late but quest was there (water rift spawns inside the southwest corner of the camp so be careful you're ally like myself), relogged at 10.15, late again, then at 10.55 exactly it spawned
Soon after I got to borean tundra, near the goblin camp (a bit southeast, just where all the crazy machines are) and got my wind buff

Just found another water rift in Waterspring Field in Tanaris. This time it's closer to Gadgetzan, but farther south. On the Tanaris map, southeast of Gadgetzan, there are 3 mountain ranges. It is directly to the east of the middle mountain range, right beside one of the pirate tents. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, there's two of them there, but the other could have been the one I already saw, I can't quite remember.

i found mine at time from xx40 to xx50. so, but i can confirm they have 1hour cd,

Thank You So Much!

It has been my observation that the rifts do not spawn every hour on the hour, despite what much of the interwebs are saying. Some rifts were spawning at a quarter after or a quarter til. For a while, I was able to go from one to another and get three back to back so they were offset. Most speculated that this was due to the hour starting when the last one ended. If this is the case, the more popular rifts might appear to be spawning close to the XX:00 mark due to the fact that they are taken down so quickly.

Our realm found it helpful to start a chat channel "Rift" to announce rift spawn times and locations. Once you have an idea on the times you can go on about your day and not sit and stare at your screen all day.

The Fire elemental buff that states "does X fire damage every 3 seconds stacks five times" is false, after sitting on the target dummy for 15 mins (during my server shutdown announcements) doing nothing but atuo attacking with my feral druid i was able to get the buff constantly refreshed without falling off at a maximum of 3 stacks. it did 240 damage every 3 seconds (don't get me wrong, still pretty nice 80 dps increase for my hardmodes today) but, i wanted to let the community know that the tooltip is indeed wrong.

I disagree with the timer being 60 minutes; we saw a spawn in 1 spot at 7:30 pm, and the next one was earlier than 8:30.... so I'd recommend going to the spawn spot EARLY.

In case you are farming goblin rep like me and still need Wind, there is a rift right outside the entrance to Dire Maul. When taking the path up from the main road, it is just left of the path before it turns to pavement and ramps up to the ruins. Cheers.

Here is what I found while doing these.

Killing the rifts anywhere else did not count for the achievement for me. I did them in Outland and never got it. I moved to Northrend and it all counted once I did the last one. Below is the map locations and the times they first appeared.

Tripping the Rifts Guide - Northrend

**Warning: You may be sitting at coordinates awhile before the rift spawns.**

Get buff from killing the mobs, and acquire quest from the rift for gold/xp. Quest is a daily apparently.
These are the spots I visited:(thanks Phosh for wind and water)

I just got my achievement today, and here's where I found the rifts:
Water Rift in Stranglethorn Vale, near the Wild Shore (Where the pirates are).
Air Rift in Sholazar Basin, right in the centre of the Cultist camp near the Glimmering pillar.
Fire Rift at the crossroads, Barrens.
and Earth Rift at Nessingwary's camp in Nagrand.

The biggest mistake I find anyone can make is to camp at spawn places in Northrend, because you can still get the achievement from rifts much lower than your level.

Flight points / flavor locations
Fire - Zim'Torga, then fly to Altar of Rhunok.
Wind - River Heart, then fly SE of Frenzyheart Hill to the wasp hive.
Earth - K3, then fly west to the gnoll village.
Water - Argent Tournament, then west PAST the cultists.

I managed to get Earth, then take quick flight points / hearthstone to Water in one night.
Next night I got Wind, then take quick fight points / hearthstone to Fire.

So, apparently, the rifts spawn continent/zone wide at the same time, ~~on a roughly 50 - 60 minute timer~~. they seem to respawn 50-60 minutes after they last died/de-spawned. (all other vital info about despawning, duration of the quest giving item etc. apply)

NOTE: The local mobs attack the elementals, and given enough time will mow several of them down. BE in the area before the rifts spawn, having someone tell you "they are up, come now" will likely not end well.

For those that have slightly better graphics, this could be rather easy.

If you set view distance and environment detail to max, if your card is good, you can see things at 1,000 yards out. (if you want to test this to see if you can, go to hell pen, and see if you can find a Fel Reaver. Then use a map addon to see the distance from where you are, to where the Fel Reaver is.

If you can, you can see the aoe that the rift does from close to 1,000 yards out, if you have los. Using this, in combination with a 310% mount, I have been able to get 3 rifts in less than 15 mins, multiple times. Though, atm I am 7 out of 12 on getting them. They seem to like to despawn just as I'm landing, but at least then you have an idea on the time and exact location, so you can return when it's respawning.

Also, I'm finding that the spawn points usually are around some sort of village, camp, or town, for any faction or group. Which would fit the lore, Deathwing wanting to kill the living, and retake everything for himself. Best bets are in outlands, lots of faction "camps" in a zone, not too hilly of terrain, and you can use flying mounts.

It was much easier for me to get the rifts in Outlands as opposed to Northrend. There was just too much competition between Horde and Alliance on my server. Also, I did discover a water rift in Swamp of Sorrows. The coordinates are 28.4, 39.4. Best of luck!

I was able to pick up the daily quest from the mysterious device on 3 chars who had not helped kill the elementals from the rift that spawned to make this device.

The device despawned exactly 5 mins after the rift was closed.

so put all your chars in 1 place log out and check back every so often then swap alts until all have done the daily once a device/rift is present to do daily on all.

The most common misconception is that these rifts spawn every hour on the hour. They don't, they spawn every hour after they were last destroyed/despawned. That is why there's been reports of them spawning at odd hours.

They all spawned for me at 12:24 PM eastern time.

I was able to get Water from Dragonblight, moved to Crystalsong to get Wind and then moved east to Zul'Drak to get Fire.

I previously got my earth in Storm peaks so I got my Feat of strength :)

So it is proven, they do not spawn exactly at **:00

They all spawned everywhere at **:25 for me!

Okay, for those of you who still haven't run into any rifts, here are some of my tips that helped me out:

1. Just starting out? Ride around.
If you're just starting out, just ride from zone to zone, keeping an eye out for the rifts and elementals. The rifts will open on the hour, every hour. (You can sometimes find the rifts a little before or a little after when they're "supposed" to be open.)

2. Points of interest.
Head to important places on the map. Usually these places are marked and are named on your map. Usually the rifts, accompanied by the elementals, are usually in the generally vicinity.

3. Camp one location, but set your Hearthstone to another.
Since you only have 10 minutes to find these little buggers before they despawn, what I did was I set my Hearthstone to Wetlands and camped the Ghostlands when I needed the Water Elementals.

FACTS
#1 The rifts and elementals spawn every hour on the hour.
#2 The rifts will despawn after 10 minutes. If it is 12:15 and you are approaching a rift, don't be surprised if it disappears.
#3 In order to get this achievement, you Do Not have to be level appropriate. (I am level 80 and did all of mine in Azeroth.)
You only need to be level appropriate if you're trying to pick up the item for the daily, Hammering It Out.

Easy to get in one go at 80 in Northrend, assuming medium server population.

Can't find the post of the creator now, but using this map, and knowing the last mass despawn was at about :37 server time, we hovered around Dragonblight's Moonrest Gardens and waited for the water rift using NPCScan. Killed them quickly as soon as they spawned, flew to the air rift a little northeast of Borean Tundra's Taunka'le Village, hearthed to Dalaran and flew to the gnoll camp west of Storm Peak's K3 for the air rift, then quickly jumped the border to Zul'Drak and killed the fire rift.

This all got done in a little under 5 minutes thanks to crusader aura, lots of AoE, and brooms. d-(o_o )z

It would be really nice if the lower levels could get coords for at least 1 of each of the rifts. I've been galloping around everywhere looking for a rift no higher than 40 and can't find the one where some people have been mentioning, because there are no coords. So you're just kind of sitting around staring aimlessly.

You guys are mentioning all the level 60-80 zone rifts, but almost none of the 1-59 rifts sightings.

so maybe they dont spawn on the hour (**:00) but 1 hour after the last kill (or 1 hour after the rift closes if no one is there to kill it) as someone told me in the server. that makes some sense since you can close a rift at 14:07 and the next will spawn at 15:07. then this could close at 15:17, so the next spawn will be at 16:17 and so on...

if that is the case, they are random

Tip: The ground rumbles twice before the spawn, it seems to be about 15 and then 5 minutes before the rift spawns. Finding this out helped me as I was going from zone to zone.

I managed to accomplish this in about 7 minutes with a non-porting class. Here's the process.

Prep: Set your hearthstone to Loch Modan and fly to Sentinel Hill in Westfall.

Run:

Fire: Right near the flight path. (55, 49)
Air: Ride directly East into Duskwood. Ride through the southern part of Raven Hill Cemetary and look to your right as you approach the central path. (20, 50)
Earth: Hearth to Loch Modan. The rift spawns right in town. (37, 46)
Water: Take the flight path to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands. The rift spawns just on the other side of the Keep by the stables. (9, 55)

Note: You can take the ship on the right side dock back to Northrend from here to reset your hearth to Dalaran.

After doing 6 toons, I found the rifts to be spawning as early as 2 minutes before the top of the hour and as much as 4 minutes after.

Let's see, nothing in game about these events, not one iota of in-game info. Rifts spawn and despawn on some sort of a timer, with no indication of their location, despite the fact thet they MAY spawn at the same spots on whatever cycle time they are on, once again no in-game info about this. And there's a daily of some sort, but apparently based on completing tasks that are not referenced in-game anywhere.

I was a big fan of pre-WOTLK events, had tons of fun battling the scourge at their spawn points all over old Azeroth. But this is pathetic. At least in the pre-WOTLK events the presence of scourge was announced zone wide (as I recall) and there were fixed markers that indicated spawn locations.

God I hope Blizz does better than this for Cata, because this is frustrating and pointless. Just goes to show that even smart people with lots of financial resources are still more than capable of screwing the pooch.

Edit: I actually did miss something: after finding three different Fire Rifts/elemental groups i landed to kill them but instantly they all faded away, despawned.

Some of these locations are duplicates. For example, since Valkyrion is in Storm Peaks, not Icecrown, I assume that the Water Rift location listed is actually Ymirheim, which is already mentioned in the same list.

Likewise, "Drak'Atal passage" is the stairway to the left of Ursoc's Den, so that's another duplicate.

Incidentally, I'm confused by the description of the location as being "next to" something. I'm never sure if that means to the east or to the west, or how far.

Aside from these problems, I do appreciate this list.

A few edits:

1. Just after posting the above, I found the Ymirheim water rift. The exact location is 60.2, 60.0.
2. "Storm Peaks, Brunhildar Village, to the west of the village": Does this mean Foot Steppes or Sifreldar Village?
3. The Drakil'Jin Ruins rift is at 72.6,23.5.
4. Found a wind rift among the Beryls in Borean Tundra at 51.1, 36.2.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting this Feat. If the pre-Wrath event is any indication, over the next week or two the respawn times for each rift will get shorter and the durations longer (perhaps more severe, even). Add to that the part of the invasion in which the elementals actually attack the cities and we should all have plenty of time to nab this (on the PTR the city rifts also gave the corresponding buffs required for this Feat. Subject to change, but I doubt it will).

Don't let that stop you from hunting them down now, though! New things are always fun.

I've found out that at least on Trollbane and Shattered Hand EU, the elemental rifts seem to spawn massively around xx.40 every hour (e.g. 11.40, 12.40, 13.40).

I don't know if this can be generalized to other EU realms or even US realms, but I hope this information will be useful for your hunting purposes nonetheless.

For my low level alliance characters (lvl below 15) here are the "safe" places where I found my rift for them :

Fire : Sentinel Hill in Westfall
Earth : Just outside of Theramore in Loch Modan. It's close to where there is a broken Catapult next to the road
Air : Auberdine in Darkshore, just stand next to the mailbox and you can't miss it.

killed the water rift at 4:47pm (41.37) in Stranglethorn Vale. got earth rift at about 8:42 am in The Storm Peaks (33.80 just NW of k3).got to the Sholazar spawn point just east of the Glimmering Pillar (56.40) at 8:55am got the wind rift. logged on at about 9:44 am at Everlook and the got the fire rift. seems there are on 40mins to 1 hour timer

after finding three different Fire Rifts/elemental groups i landed to kill them but instantly they all faded away, despawned.

The elementals are on a strict 10 minute de-spawn timer and it may be unfortunate that you were unlucky to arrive just as they were de-spawning. There is a theory that they also de-spawn if not already engaged by a player or NPC of the appropriate level. Details are sketchy ... which, for me at least, is what makes it a little more exciting as there are puzzles to be uncovered, rather than handed to you on a plate. There was a similar series of quests for the scourge event. I never even found out about the Kara one, for instance (until someone shared the quest in Wintergrasp about a year after it was possible to complete it!).

Could someone confirm if it's possible for the server to be "late" with spawning the rifts or if the locations might not always spawn the rifts?

It's 23:20, I've been flying around the specified spots in Zul'Drak since 23:00, and nothing. Not a single fire rift. There are no devices floating in the air, so it means no one has killed one either...

To put it plainly: what the hell?

EDIT: I can confirm that something is weird with the time. I just saw the rifts spawn at 23:45...

the easiest ones for me to find were:

Crystalsong Forest (wind) coords: 74.42, 63.03
Dragonblight (water) coords: 79.15, 48.93 (at wintergarde keep)
Zul'Drak (fire) coords: 21.75, 79.58 (at Zeramas)
Grizzly Hills (earth) coords: 45.51, 26.93 (at the Drak'atal Passage stairs)

I first hit up the earth rift, and once getting that i went over to the fire rift and immediately got that one within 3 minutes of getting earth. After fire, I flew over to the water rift and got that just 2 minutes after getting fire. I was then headed up to Crystalsong Forest for the wind rift, and would have had the Tripping the Rifts achievement done in less then 10minutes, but the wind one despawned about a minute after getting there. Basically, my flight order was earth, fire, water, wind.

I have also seen rifts spawn in

Zul'drak @ about 32,47 just east of the reliquary of pain (fire rift)
Dragonblight @ about 35,46, at the SW entrance to Agmar's Hammer (water)
Sholazar Basin @ about 49,68, just south of River's Heart along the bank of the river (wind)

It would be really nice if the lower levels could get coords for at least 1 of each of the rifts. I've been galloping around everywhere looking for a rift no higher than 40.

You guys are mentioning tons of level 60-80 rifts, but almost none of the 1-59 rifts sightings.

Those of us between levels 27-34 would like to get he dailies done like all you higher levels can, but there is no info in this entire thread on spawns appropriate to that level range for both Alliance AND Horde.
Especially for Earth.
Horde has no problem with the level 20 level spawns for toons 20 and under, but level 30 spawn won't allow anyone higher than level 30 to get the daily.

Can somebody please post spawns points that are level 35 or so? If there is such a beastie?
We little 'uns can get the Tripping achievement, but want to do the dailies too.

1. Water rift - there's one outside the entrance to Booty Bay and another along the south-eastern shoreline of STV.
2. Air rift - one spawns in the middle of the field at Dabyrie's Farmstead in Arathi Highlands.
3. Earth - a rift spawns in the Uplands just north of Strahnbrad, and another one south east of Dalaran Crater in the Alterac Mountains.

Finished this just now, only looked in Outlands. Found all within one hour (even though that's not a requirement.) Also did WG in that time.

Earth - found in BEM @ Vekhaar Stand
Air - Near Area 52 in Netherstorm
Fire - Hellfire near Hellfire Citadel. Bonus: Killed a rare mob for another step down for Bloody Rare.
Water - Zangarmarsh near the big hut in Feralfen Village.

I just turned in each of the rifts. Icecrown, Crystalsong, Dragonblight, and Zuldrak. I didn not get the feat of str, can anyone else confirm same issue. I'm guessing it is a phase 4 achi for beating each boss.

I have the perfect path I have used to get this achieve on all my toons. Each time it takes me just one pass, so I end up with all 4 buffs. When the attack spawns all the rifts open everywhere, so you have 10 mins to down all 4.

1\ From Dalaran head out and over to Storm Peaks (35, 82), you need to have an idea when the next attack begins or your up for a wait on this first one. It's Earth btw.
2\ Once that is dealt with it's fly straight over to Zul'Drak (16, 60) for the Fire.
3\ Now head for Crystalsong (74, 63) and clean up the Air rift there.
4\ Finally, as fast as you can it's Dragonblight (75,27) for the water rift.

FYI...you need the buff to get credit for the ach (verified by myself), meaning, you have to wipe out the spawn and complete the event. Don't do like I did and only kill 1 elemental to be a nice guy and let someone else kill a few...that did not get me any credit. And, more than 1 can spawn at a time (I killed a spawn in Zul drak and someone spammed that another spawn was active in general).

JUST incase anyone had the same prob as me before i worked it out - its not that you kill an element, its that you stay until the void is destroyed is how you get the buff which applies towards the acheivement. I found this out after killing many rifts, you dont need to be there till the end but just until the void is killed.

And they have a 1 hour spawn timer but they do not spawn "on the hour" which many on my realm believe, as i have just killed a Fire rift in Zul Drak at 25past the hour.
It is a 1 hour spawn timer from the time they are killed and they last for 10 minutes until they are killed or fade out.

I have had problems with I.E. Shoulin Basin (Sapphire Hive) where i see a void and by the time i fly down it phases, apparently this is a bug but if you are there at the time it appears it will be fine.

Hey There,

I found a really nice way to do this and Get the Tripping the Rifts achievement done in One Go. I did it on my Rogue and Druid this morning

Rift Tripping is the screenie with the path I took to get it done :) (pending approval) you can see all 4 buffs in the top right hand corner.

I did this on my Druid first , and when she had 10-15 mins left on her buffs I logged over to my Rogue and flew from Dalaran to the first one in Crystalsong Forest, then Zul'drak, then Grizzly Hills, and lastly the spawn in Dragonblight.

I was on my own with no one else around so even doing it solo is possible. the only thing I did have in my favour on my Rogue is that I had 310% speed Flying mount.

Heres a pro tip for all you people in wowland!
Get all 4 rifts in one run!

For Alliance..
Set your hearthstone in Westfall.
Travel to Southshore and wait in the middle of the town's main road.
A wind rift will spawn. Quickly kill this rift.
Now quickly head straight for the Dalaran Crater in the north west of the zone.
Along the south western edge of the crater, about 50 yards out from the bubble itself there will be an earth rift. Quickly Close it.
Now run all along the Dalaran bubble following it clockwise from the bottom till it brings you through a small valley. You will see murlocs fighting water elementals. Quickly Close the rift.
Now hearth!
Just at sentinel hill, next tot he tower itself will be fire elementals if you have been quick and no one has killed them yet.
BAM! Feat of Strength in 1 run!
There is also a rift in Westfall down right outside Moonbrook if you missed the one by the tower.

For horde, you will be doing the same ones at dalaran crater and the Murlocs, but replace southshore with the west side of Tarren Mill, and replace Westfall with the Crossroads. If you miss the invasion in the crossroads itself, go due north and there is a second fire rift spawn near the quillboar.
BAM! Horde Feat of Strength in 1 run!

Hunters can also use Track Elementals to see these mobs. There usually aren't other elementals nearby, so the rift elementals stand out well.

For those players on multiple low level alts like me, doing it in Eastern Kingdoms.

Westfall, Sentinel Hill, Fire - you can camp in the inn and look toward the tower. This enables you to log out without the 20 second delay. The rift spawns halfway between the Inn and the Sentinel Tower.

Redridge Mountains, Lakeshire, Earth - The rift spawns at the first dock in Lakeshire. Again, you can camp at the Inn, so you can logout without delay if no rift is present.

It may be possible to hit 3 in a row (Westfall, Fire; Darkshire, Wind; Redridge Mtns, Earth), but spawn times vary. I was able to catch Fire and Earth in one go tonight by immediately flying to Redridge Mtns immediately after finishing Westfall. I would've hit Darkshire on the way, but I didnt know there was a wind spawn point until just now. Thank God for Wowhead!

It might be true, but it is not always true.
I have killed one rift at 09:24 and another at 10:35.

Earth rifts spawn in Azshara (currently a level 45ish-60 zone).

One rift was in Ursolan (Timbermaw Hold).
Another was at Forlorn Ridge (near the Alliance flags).

Edit: Earth rift spawned at the path into Haldaar Encampment (1st satyr camp when you enter the zone)

Easy mode Tripping the Rifts for alliance:

Part 1: Camp the bottom level of Winterfall village, Winterspring inside the fence area. A Fire Rift spawns right in the middle of the poor Furbolgs that folks are trying to grind for Wintersaber Trainers. Once you do everyone a favor and close that rift, quickly head to Everlook and fly to Talonbranch Glade, Felwood. Once there ride north to Felpaw Village where a Wind Rift will spawn at the Southeast Corner of the village once again slaughtering the unfortunate Furbolgs who were just minding their own business.

Part 2: Camp the Northeastern area of Menethil Harbor, Wetlands inside the wall where a Water Rift will spawn and annoy the guards. Once you close it quickly hop a flight path to Thelsamar, Loch Modan where you should see an Earth Rift right in the middle of town once again aggravating the guards.

Both of those parts are commutative in the sense that you could do the reverse of what I said (Camp Felpaw village FIRST or Thelsamar FIRST respectively). The Rifts do seem to spawn simultaneously in those areas. You may get unlucky if a player closes the second rift before you get there.

After flying around in Northrend zones for a couple of days and never seeing a rift, I started grinding Wintersaber Trainers and noticed rifts all over the place in Winterspring. Maybe it's related to the progression of the event or the absence of people camping them, but it seems much easier to find them in classic zones.

Note that you will not get the daily associated with closing these Rifts unless you are the appropriate level, but you will still get the FoS.

Regarding the spawning of the rifts.. the spawn time is 60 min from when it was last closed. Which accounts for the different spawntimes.. i would imagin however that it resets at servermaintainance to be on the hour.

U can get ths achivment even on Phase 4 invasion, when elementals will attack capital cities (Stormwind and Inforge / Orgrimmar and Thunder Bluff)

"If you succeed at closing at least one of the rifts, all players who participated in the defense will gain a buff appropriate to the type of elementals you just repelled. Also, every city will be attacked only by two types of elementals, so if you want to earn your Tripping the Rifts by defending your cities, you will need to defend each one at least twice." (Source)

Ok so either this map isnt acurate or there is only 1 rift per hour. Like 1 rift in the whole northrend map and 1 in EK etc.

Because for 3 hours straight, as soon as it hits **:00 I start searching in Scholazar Bazin at all the locations. Managed to take 2 runs to check. Even if I were to be late and the elementals are allready dead it would still be a device on the ground.

Anyone that can confirm what I am saying is true?

WHAT the hell is wrong with nowadays wowplayers ? - I see TONS of Location Descriptions - tons comments here - and kinda ZERO Location Description comes with coordinates.

Seriously, are all wow players now addon-immune ? In the old days nearly any location came with a proper coordinateblock, and there are alot of addons that provide coordinates (mapaddons, location addons, waypointaddons like : tomtom, mapster, broker_location).
Use coordinates pls to get rid of misunderstanding descriptions, whats "short" for one palyer may be alrd too long for another. Coordinates are one of the best addon inventions on wow, making finding stuff fast + easy for others.

At least https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/guide=cataclysm&prelaunch#. should come with coordinates IF ppl had alrd the time to find and post a location.

As of now (Nov 10) the respawn timers on the rifts has been shortened to 45 minutes. ~~I don't know what to exactly, but it's definitely less than an hour now.~~

I took down one at 11:15 tonight, came back on another character at 12:15 hoping to down it again, and was greeted by the mirage glitch (the elementals appeared and immediately despawned), indicating that the rift had already spawned and despawned on its own well before I got there.

It would seem that Zarhym's warning is starting to come to pass (in Soviet Russia, rift camps you).

Update: The timer is now 45 minutes. I predicted that the rift would reappear at 12:55 (downed at 11:15, 45 minute respawn, 10 minute uptime, despawn, 45 minute respawn) and I was dead on -- it reappeared at 12:55 exactly.

2 things:

1.) Does the level of elemental killed have any relation to the feat of strength? (I know it matters when speaking in terms of the offered daily quest from the mysterious device)

2.) Is there any chance after killing these things that one couldn't get the feat? I'm an 80, hunted up and down ZD for fire and was SOL each time, so I found them at the portal in Hellfire Pen. and got the buff (of course the daily wasn't offered there). I only ask because I had counted that I'd killed 2 Earth (1 in Storm Peaks, 1 in Grizzly), 1 Wind (Sholazar) and 2 Water (Dragonblight) and then finally killed this fire in Hellfire, fully expecting the feat of strength to ding and it didn't.

Just so you guys know, they are not set to spawn at the top of the hour. I found this out the hard way. The one at Reliquary of Agony is ~10 minutes before the hour. I was there on my DK, logged got my Rogue there and had them all killed but the last one which equals no buff. The rift despawned at 9:01 pm server time.

On Scarshield Legion I encountered rifts at any time past an hour in Outland on my 64 Druid. Like **:45 and be able to kill it and get the quest.
On my 80 Pally I camped lots of sites but never encountered one in Northrend. I even spend like 90 minutes flying between three portals in Zul'Drak.
I know this is not supposed to be the cycle, but I thought I share it anyway.

It's possible to do all 4 in one spawn timer if you can fly in Outland (280 or 310 speed helps alot).

Spawns seem to appear just before the top of the hour.
You have until 10min after the hour before they despawn.
Each spawn has 12 health that ticks down per elemental killed.
Each elemental has under 3k health.

Start at Falcon Watch in Hellfire 5-10 minutes before the top of the hour.
The fire spawn is in front of the Inn.
Fly to Veil Shienor - Terokkar - 59,25 (air)
Fly to Umbrafen Village - Zangarmarsh - 80,85 (water)
Fly to Windyreed Village - Nagrand - 71, 52 (earth)

If those spawn points listed are empty, then someone's already been by and killed it so you'll need to use the map to find the next closest.

All spawn points will typically be where there are NPCs or beasts to "fight" it.

If you're 80, these rifts won't allow you to loot the device, you'll have to find a rift in Northrend to turn in for the daily.

I have a question, so please forgive me if I sound ignorant. I didn't notice any of these rifts over the past week or so, because I haven't been out and about. When I saw the Elementals invading Stormwind and Ironforge was my first clue that I should look this up and see what was going on, so I just discovered that this achievement exists and I want to get it.

What I want to know is if this achievement can be obtained from closing rifts anywhere in the world, or at least anywhere in Northrend for a level 80, or do I have to close rifts in Stormwind and Ironforge now that they are opening there? I would prefer to catch them in open pastures, because the second this event starts in the cities I get disconnected from enormous latency and can't get back on until all the rifts are closed.

I have been unable to get the buffs in IF during the invasion.
Once the barricades are up the city seems to transition straight into "free citizens mode" with all rifts already closed.

By contrast, in SW some time is spent running around the city and closing rifts. It is quite easy to get the buffs there, but alas only Wind and Water (the two I had already previously obtained).
