The achievement for Old Crafty is actually easier for Alliance to do than this one is for Horde.

Alliance have plenty of places in Orgrimmar that they can fish relatively undisturbed.

Horde have one spot, the Forlorn Cavern, and it has NO hiding spots.

Not at all easy to get. Spent an hour or so in ironforge at the Forlorn Cavern, got the 250 fish achievement but no Old Ironforge. Died twice to alliance characters.

If you're going after this achievement, I suggest going at a low traffic time and fish at the most southern point of the pool in the Forlorn Cavern.

has any horde gotten this achievement at all? I know people with over 500 casts without getting the fish, yet I've seen alliance after alliance getting it and running away, or ganking me first.

I'm at 250 casts myself atm, and I got bored with getting ganked.

After 4 Hours of fishing, and emptying my "Gigantique" bag twice, I got the old iron jaw.

My gf wasn't so lucky and few hours later, all the alliance woke up and endless ganking began. She never did caught the fish.

The location is southern most part of Forlorn Cavern.

I just got to 100 fishing Achievement and fished to 347 and got Iron Jaw and the at 360 BAM! Iron Jaw number 2.

Off to Valley of Sprits to see the lucks holds out.

I got lucky and got it in 156 casts getting some other junk fish along the way and some items. I find i had better luck in the Forlorn Cavern and have seen some people on my server fish it in the Terrace near mage trainer and some people where trying to fish in lava.

I found just put sime music sit down and relax and just fish. Even if it takes u 1k casts...hey ull get lots of achievements along the way so its ok.

2000 casts, 2x 'the 1 ring' and still no luck with this fish =( I hate rng. I've seen several people next to me fishing get the fish within their first 500 casts.

Be prepared for some frustration if you go for this, you might get lucky or you might be there all week.

Edit: 4500 casts later I have finally got this item. In the meantime I believe I have made a noticeable income from selling lvl 1 fish @ 1 copper each and I have nearly completed my city defender achievement via killing horde who come fishing (sorry hordies). This took about two weeks of farming whenever I had time.

Note for all fishing fans like me who are totally going for Salty Title:

Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty are NOT necessary for the Accomplished Angler !

So you can get Salty without spending days on these fish :-)! Happy fishing!

I'm posting this in hopes that other's can avoid the mistake I just made.

I turned on auto-loot and was trying to cast and recast as quickly as possible to reduce the pain of this endeavor as much as possible. Believe it or not, I caught Old Ironjaw before I even got my "Catch 100 Fish" achievement. Problem is, I was going so fast, that before I even realized I had caught Old Ironjaw, I had already recast my next lure. Old Ironjaw is Bind on Pickup, so you have to click OK on the "Are you sure you want to loot this?" dialog -- which I didn't. Old Ironjaw went back into the water, and I haven't seen him since.

Lesson of my sad tale is to not go so fast that you drop him when you actually manage to catch him. Who knows when I'll catch him again. Good luck to all of you.

I'm having the same 'luck' as a Hordie fishing in IF. I have the fishing quest for the crock - which I am catching on every cast but I have yet to find Old Ironjaw.

I had no issue getting Old Crafty in Orgrimmar while I had the quest. I got him in less than 15 minutes. I'm into my second hour of fishing in IF with no luck and the server is now in maintenance so I 'hope' that I can get him before too many allies come to gank me tomorrow.

The safest spot for those who choose to fish in Forlorn Cavern is in the way back of the pool of water. I went there and not many alliance go to that area of IF. I was spotted by only two people who were warlocks and that was within an hour span. They didn't rat me out, but instead they fished with me =P. Maybe I just lucked out, but there are spots to stand in the back of the pond that you will be able to fish and may be seen every once in a while by alliance and hope they do not kill you.

Screw this achievement its just another example of how Blizz has a hard on for the Alliance and hates the Horde.

Ally's have an easy shot at Old Crafty. Just grab the daily and use the glitch in IF (the glitch that blizzard wont even admit is there.) But the horde are jacked any way you look at it with this achievement. No decent place to try and get it done period just hours of corpse running and getting ganked and the "hide behind the pillars and fish in the lava" BS is just that grade A first class BS. My advice is that if you're horde forget about this cause unless youre just lucky as hell you arent going to get it without hours and hours... and hours of frustration.

I spent the better part of 4 hours in IF last night in Forlorn Cavern. Not only did I gain 50+ lvls of fishing, but did not reel up Old Ironjaw.Opened GM ticket and they told me that everything is working as designed. So good luck with the achievement. I think the best time to go in was around 9pm to 12.

Tried this trick. I'm horde, got the crocalisk quest, went fishing for Old Crafty in Orgrimmar, got him after 21 casts. Started to believe this works.
Then I went to Ironforge, after dying to guards once or twice, I started fishing in the forlorn cavern.
After 216 casts, still no Old Ironjaw.

So seems it does not change much, though I have to admit, either I was very lucky in Orgrimmar, or it does work, but only for Old Crafty and not for Old Ironjaw.

Just as a matter of stats, as a horde druid at the wheel location, I caught Old Ironjaw today. It took me approximately 2 hours and 250 casts to get it. I wasn't using a lure, but had max fishing and +33 from pole and line. I only had 2 alliance even notice me in that time, neither of which could see me well enough to make a reasonable attack before they died in the lava.

Got it today after 46 catches, while doing the Crocolisks in the City quest.
This quest raises the chance to get Ironjaw and Crafty, as long as you don't have the Baby Crocolisk quest item in the inventory.

Just completed this as Horde yesterday. Fishing in the Forlorn Cavern it took be 412 catches before I fished up Old Ironjaw, so be prepared to spend quite some time.

I am happy to be on a very horde dominated server, so I only got killed by alliance 3 times while completing this

Although there's been much speculation you could increase your chances of fishing up Old Ironjaw by grabbing the Baby Crockolisk fishing daily, I can assure you that as an Alliance member it doesn't increase your odds of acquiring Ironforge's elusive fish. After fishing for over two hours with that fishing daily in my quest log (and not looting the baby crock as speculators suggest), I still was unable to fish up Ironjaw.

That said, I fished up Old Crafty on the first cast with the baby crock fishing daily in my quest log. Perhaps the mechanic works similarly for the Horde, whereby their chance of fishing up Old Ironjaw is increased but doesn't necessarily affect their chances of fishing up Old Crafty.

Fished up Old Ironjaw yesterday as Horde using the "secret spot" noted above in the lava after my 5th cast. Fishing skill was about 390 and was using the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishin Pole with a Spun Truesilver Fishing Line. No other fishing enhancements and no fishing quests in my log.

FWIW wasn't able to position camera as noted above on my current model MacBook Pro (couldn't get it to pan out far enough that I could see the lava on the other side of the wheel), so just turned 90 degrees and fished between the wall and the spinning wheel. Other than having to click multiple times sometimes to cast, no other issues doing it that way.

I don't think the quest changes much while fishing in Org. I fished mine out on my 7th cast WITHOUT having the quest. I have yet to attempt to fish Old Ironjaw though.

It took me several hours (2-6h) during 4 days to get this. It was really frustrating to see some dude get it after less than ten casts. My fishing skill grew from 250 to 450 during those days.

spent 6 hours and leveled to 300 on this. Goddamn some alliance are *!@#$%^s. the worst ones are the ones that either get guards to attack you or the ones that don't kill you, instead they prevent you from fishing. A lot of /sigh involves. Still didn't fish him up, though...

You need to hope that alliance are feeling generous.

Using/wearing items that increase your fishing skill does not increase your chance of catching a rare fish. It only increases your chance of getting a bite and of your catch not getting away when your fishing skill is too low to catch stuff with regularity in the zone you're fishing in. In other words, higher fishing skill does not give you better luck catching rare fish.

I've been fishing for this over 4 nights, and approx. 3-4 hours efficient time every night now without any luck.
Dont have a count but I've been around 700-800 fishes caught per session, so to undercut abit Im well over 2500 catches...

Been fishing at the wheel in the lava all of this time, anyone that can confirm that he's still catchable there after the latest patch? Seeing a comment somewhere that a guy got a warning and a 3 hour ban for wallclimbing and using that to fish, I figured they might removed it to avoid any further incidents like it.

Going there again tonight after midnight when its not that crowded for another 700-800 catches, but its really getting on my nerves, especially since most of my guildies never spent over 1000 catches for him.

Update . . . .with well over 1200 fish, and a final fishing skill lvl of 387, I have finally caught Old Ironjaw. And as others have posted here, remember that when you catch him, you will receive a loot box asking if you wish to loot the item, so don't be too quick on the recast, or you might miss your chance.

As of today, I have gone from fishing skill level of 227 to 323, over 600 fish, and still have not gotten this achievement. Will update later. . .

Wow, it seems I managed to get this one with some major luck; I was fishing in Ironforge for approximately 5 minutes with around 75 fishing skill (gogo powerleveling profs at 80). That said, I guess his drop rate, as it were, requires some decent luck. It also looks like it doesn't require much skill in the way of fishing in order to obtain him.

Using the "lava method" worked best for myself as far as avoiding pvp,

Caught him this afternoon around 12:30pm with my Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole. I have 450 fishing + 30 for the pole bonus putting me at 480 skill. I used the wheel's invisible ledge trick in The Great Forge (had my toon facing the wheel) and had no problem adjusting my camera angle to find the bobber.

Longjaw Mud Snapper: 19 (59.4%)
Brilliant Smallfish: 9 (28.1%)
Bristle Whisker Catfish: 3 (9.4%)
Old Ironjaw: 1 (3.1%)

32 catches in total, took about 15 minutes.

I tried briefly last night in the back of the Forlorn Cavern /sleep fishing with a friend, only about 5 casts before an alliance pally caught wind of us and attacked us/aggroed all the guards... logged off for the night dead and came back early this morning and rezzed and ran to the Great Forge, died in the lava and rezzed once I hopped up the wall. I had no troubles today and didn't see any alliance for the short time I was there (I am 3 hours ahead of server time so it seems the early bird gets the worm). Good luck to everyone else!

P.S. I used the instructions here as for how to jump up the wheel, strafing seemed to do the trick!

Well, I thought I'd add in my own personal experience now that I've caught Old Ironjaw. It's a cute little Horde story....

<begin> About two and a half hours ago (10:30 PM PST, 12:30 AM Realm time ), my buddy and I decided to try fish up Old Ironjaw. We're both level 80 Mages, decently geared, and knew the kind of trouble we were about to get into. (Whisperwind is about 75% Alliance, but it was late as well as a weekday so we figured it'd be a good time to go.)

We teleported to Stonard, flew to Kargath, then hopped on my Mechano-hog and rode north all the way to Ironforge. I had him navigate the quickest route to The Forlorn Cavern. There were a few lowbie Alliance players dueling out front. At any rate, we booked it past the front gate and headed left toward TFC. I got ganked by a guard, my buddy made it all the way to the water with an 80 Human Warrior hot on his trail. I revived and got my corpse to the water; he stayed dead but ready to revive.

There were two Alliance players fishing. An 80 Night Elf Druid and an 80 Gnome *something*. I was getting a little frustrated with the situation, so I said "!@#$ it" and revived at the edge of the water. I started casting and expected to get ganked at any moment, but the Allies left me alone. My buddy saw this and did the same thing. We fished together for about 10 minutes before both Allies left. That's when a 70 Night Elf Rogue decided to play around with us....

We got sapped a bit. Then we had little knives thrown at us from around a corner. Then we got ganked. Of course we were both naked and unbuffed; we figured the Allies would have left us alone if they saw that we only wanted to fish. The two 80s were respectful, but this Rogue was downright annoying. Anyway... after we popped back and began fishing again, my friend and I used two Savory Deviate Delights to disguise ourselves as pirates. I suggested we put our gear back on in case the annoying Rogue came back. You know... a little payback before we booked it out of Ironforge.... Well, a few minutes go by and the Rogue shows his ugly face again. I let him throw two knives at me before running into his LoS, casting Presence of Mind to make my Arcane Blast instant-cast, then he tasted a double Arcane Barrage from two 80 Mages.... He never saw what hit him! Haha. We laughed a bit, killed a few guards, then ported to Dalaran. </end>

By the way.... About two minutes after the two 80 Allies left me and my buddy alone, I fished up Old Ironjaw. It took a mere 50 casts. :) Sorry for the long and boring story. It's late here and I'm dead tired!

Naked Tauren with fishing cap and poll FTW. Almost no one came by and those that did either starred or fished with me. I was usually killed after between (100 and 300 catches). Oddly enough often people would fish with me then decide to kill me.

The new battleground queue from anywhere feature makes this a little less miserable. Horde, keep a battleground queue up. If any ally take notice, simply take the queue and a short pvp break. You have to anticipate a little bit, since you can't accept the queue while in combat, but you can usually tell pretty easily if someone's going to start trouble. It works great, it has saved me many corpse runs, and it breaks up the monotony a little bit.

For the horde there is a way to catch it and be safe if you manage to get into IF and to the pool were he is go to the back of the pool and fish i seen some other hordes doing it but i have no need im alliance so plz test it out and reply to me if you can do it or not

I just fished up Old Ironjaw on my Paladin, leveling up Fishing. My fishing had just hit 134, so it was much, much less than the casts people have been complaining about above.

They have removed the ability to fish this up from the wheel in the lava. It nows says "There are no fish here." My friend and I put on our PVP gear and snuck in. After killing a really annoying DK around 30 times, we both made friends with some alliance (PvE server where they actually made Horde toons to ask us why we are trying to fish in their pond!) who fished up Old Ironjaw with us. It took me about 200 fish and my friend 600 fish to catch this up. Things to consider - 1-make sure that there are no terrabad guilds on your server doing For the Horde at the same time as you. 2- Race in and run to the pond past all the guards to the back corner. If you die wait to rez until alliance are gone (unless they are very nice!). 3-Make sure there are no annoying alliance 9yo DK's in sight. 4- type /sit and fish up achievement. Note - Not recommended to vow to stay with friend while they fish up fish either! However - also go to dance with alliance fire pillar, get drunk with alliance, dance with alliance /hug alliance. TY to those of you who are really cool!

On Horde, Destromath server. Been fishing pretty much all day. I've gone from 241 fishing to 355+ and still climbing.

Haven't gotten the rare pull yet but I've gotten a couple useless greens which was surprising. Only been killed about 15 times total and 10 of those were in the last couple hours. Few Alliance were needing free kills so I just /sigh /tap and wait for them to finally kill me. Run back and they were usually gone.

Not really a problem though because I've been bored and it was calming. So make sure you're not in a bad mood or expecting to just run in and get it straight off.

Done tonight - 53 catches with skill 585 (15 minuts). Safe spot to fish is The Folron Cavern (just stay in back of the cave). If you not stealth class you will die before get there + some aliss on back (do it at night - safer). GL

Took five hours in three days to catch him. But had a good time in Ironforge, drank with alliance players who where also fishing and told jokes. Guess I was lucky only ganked four times. Helps if you don't wear your armor or fight back. Have a good time and good luck.

I am currently fishing at the Forlorn Cavern. It's 7:26pm and it's fairly quiet, only 3 people fishing here.
So far tonight I've caught 300 things. No ironjaw yet. Got a 19 pound catfish, though. :)

After much time and diligence and just over 3000 casts (at max fishing level), I finally caught Ironjaw. This could easily be the hardest fishing achievement there is. Wouldn't it be nice if the reward was worth the effort?
As a funny sidenote, the night before I caught him I had spent over three hours in a row trying. In comes a level 20 something and he started fishing right next to me. His first cast he got his 50 fish achievement. His next cast brought in Old Ironjaw! I coulda killed the guy! lmao

took 23 mins to fish him up in Forlorn Cavern...I used a Small Feast to go unnoticed, and "sit" (X) under water most of the time :)

anyway, props to Graig of Dragonblight - EU (human paladin), who beared with me while attempting the achievement :))

I got this after about 80-90 fish. I thought I had to do it all over again cause when i caught him I was so exalted that I forgot to click on the fish. After that it went back again. The next cast I didn't get anything. The cast after that I really catched the damn fish. Lol but the guy beside me said he's been there for days. I guess it's really depends on luck after all...

I caught him in 97 casts, as a Blood Elf.... I think it helped it was during Brewfest, because almost no one was in the city and no one noticed me. I just sat in the back of the cavern and laid down so I wasn't as visible. I got lucky on Old Crafty, too, too bad I can't catch any gold coins....

I decided to fish Old Ironjaw which i did in about two hours of fishing. On my first try, after 30 mins of fishing, a 17lvl player comes next to me and started talking. I told him that i was trying to get the achievement and he begun fishing also. In only 3 mins of fishing he managed to get Ironjaw. I got really mad and i left. The following day i went back to Ironforge and completed the achievement in about 1.5 hour.

Took me about 2 hours of fishing, don't know how many casts. A few hundred, I guess. I didn't count, it's just an estimate.

Keep at least 4-8 bag spaces free and throw out fish when they stack to 20. The BoP alert has gone away but you don't want to lose the fish especially if you're an auto-looter. I fished up catfish, 17 pound catfish, 19 pound catfish, lowbie health/mana pots, other random items, but always make sure one spot is dedicated for this fish.

I was in the back of Forlorn Caverns, no Alliance activity (I'm horde). One level 60 warlock sent his pet on me but once he realized I was level 80, he backed off. haha. I just /shrugged at him and went back to fishing.

I got to that area after taking the tram from SW after getting the Fishing Diplomat achievement (where you fish something up in Stormwind and Orgrimmar). headed directly to the Forlorn Cavern. I think I had to kill one or two guards when invis didn't cast in time, but I didn't run into any level 80s who were alerted. I fished from 445am to 645am eastern time.

I expected to spend hours if not days there, based on some notes in here.

Btw I didn't have any special equipment on, just the fishing pole from Kalu'ak (exalted rep). I just stood in the back of the cave, cast the fishing pole, looted fish, cast the pole, loot fish, rinse, repeat... you get the picture right? :)

This will definitely help increase fishin' skillz if they weren't already maxed.

As i`m on horde, i was aware of alies. On Drak'thul, where i`m playing, i saw in Floorlorn Caverns 3 alies and 5 players from horde :D

Today I was down in the lava on the wheel in Ironforge with a Horde character and every time I tried to cast my line I received the message "There are no fish here." I tried jumping back into the lava and repositioning myself on the wheel several times but it didn't work. I've caught Old Ironjaw this way in the past.

Does anyone know if this method has been disabled?

ok, the day i got this one was a good day for me and fishing, i got the dalaran rat, the turtle mount, the last coin for the coin achivement, mr. pinchy and old ironjaw, this last one i was prepared to stay there several hours but i got it in my 5th cast, nice work...

For Horde , I recommend using shrink noggenfogger or pygmy oil, going to the back of the Forlong Cavern, and fish underwater.
(note that you can only cast fishing while standing/sitting , find the correct spot)

Very easy achievement (for horde) that, with just a little bit of luck, you can get without even seeing any allies presenting danger (provided that you are level 80). The main problem with this achievement is that you have to fish in an area that is in the middle of a busy city and you can't really hide there. Allies attacking you on sight if they have at least some pvp blood in their veins is given and understandable, and you can't really fish under those circumstance, of course. The basic solution to this problem is very easy... simply fish at a time when there are no allies present. I'm talking about the weekly resets (Monday night/Tuesday morning). Shortly before and shortly after the reset, most people simply don't play because there is no time to do anything. No time for raiding, farming dungeons, playing BGs or playing on AH genius in the first case, for example. Everything you have to do is wait till it's 30 min. before the reset and then go to the Forlorn Cavern and start fishing.

I have done it like that just yesterday. Bought some invisibility potions and buffed, just in case, and went to Dun Morogh through Gnomeregan. To test my strategy, I didn't take the tram from Stormwind (which is better because it connects right to the cavern so there is lesser chance someone will see you). Instead, I marched right through the front gates with a trail of guards following me. Actually, I went to IF twice, taking both routes (to the right and to the left), just to see how many allies are there. All I have encountered was one lower level ally who didn't pay me any attention, though I know for sure that there was a number of allies sitting in Dalaran. In the end, I spent some 10 minutes catching fish in Forlorn Cavern without any allies interrupting me and after about 50 fish caught the Old Crafty. The only thing I had to fight were the guards, which are very easy to kill anyway.

Also, right after that, because I was already there, I decided to stay a bit longer and did the following things:

Took the tram to Stormwind and fished something from the cannal for The Fishing Diplomat.
Went to Stockades in Stormwind and got the achievement for finishing the dungeon (I also killed, just for fun, about 20 guards and all npcs I could see on my way there.
And finally went to the library in Stormwind Keep to read a couple of books for the Well Read achievement (which is guarded by a bunch of 80 elites with 25k hp, so a little bit of caution is advisable).

Only after killing lots of npcs and guards few 80s started showing up, so I used my invisibility potion, made a quick escape to somewhere where I won't be disturbed and hearthed. At this point, I spent about 20 minutes in both IF and SW and just as I ported to Dalaran, the 15 minute warning for server shutdown popped up.

Other info that may be of interest: I'm an 80 Undead demonology Warlock, though not fully geared still in PvP with about 24k hp self-buffed and this was done on RP realm Shadow Council (medium population). Of course this makes it a little bit easier, as my realm is medium-sized and its an RP realm so there are fewer bloodthirsty allies, which should be taken into account, but I do believe that this should make it still incomparably easier for horde to get this achievement done. I don't know if this was luck or not, but I spent about an hour and an half fishing for Old Ironjaw in the Forlorn Cave and then I gave up at 310 casts.

Next morning I see a guy there fishing, on his 1600 cast and still hasn't got it. I fish for about 5 casts, and then decide to use a water walking elixir and go into the deep part of the forlorn cave and I get it in 4 casts. I tell the guy what I did and he tries to do the same thing and gets the fish too.

Try using a water walking elixir and go where the water is deeper in the forlorn cave.

This was easier than catching Mr. Pinchy. Which I got a few days ago after several weeks. Anyway I swam to Stormwind on my Sea Turtle and then I ran into Stormwind. Where at level 70 I died. lol! I then made my way to the Dwarven district in spirit form and took the tram to Ironforge. The tram is at the back of what looks like another canal. Once in Ironforge I went for a rez at the spirit healer. She was down the path and to the left of the bridge outside Ironforge. (just follow the road) It took two runs into Ironforge before I made my way to the back of the Forlorn Cavern. The only Alliance player that tried to get me was a level 5 rouge. lol! It did however take 1400 casts in order to get Ironjaw which took about six hours total. I passed the time by doing dungeons. I had a lot of fun doing this. Be creative Alliance are amused by sea turtle and noggenfogger as well as pygmy oil apperently it is so amusing to them that they forget your horde. Good Luck!

And just every 2 casts in the same spot turn to the side and cast 2 times keep doing that and you'll catch him fast. It took me about 5mins to catch him...

As you cannot fish anymore in the Lava, I spent 2hours in the Forlorn Caverns which resulted in
Session 1 - 568 Fish - No Bite
Session 2 - 12 Fish - Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

My advice, don't be worried to walk away and don't be plagued with "If I stop now then it'd of dropped in the next cast...", because it will drop when it drops.

TIP: If wanting to transport to Ironforge as quickly as possible as Horde, it's advisable to obtain Goblin Transponder. To obtain it, speak to Sovik in Orgrimmar and pick up the Self Titled quest. You will then need to travel to Booty Bay {Fly to Rachet then get the boat to Booty Bay} and speak to Chief Engineer Scooty. Wait a moment and loot the Goblin Transponder. Then step into the Transporter which will take you into Gnomeregan, make your way out of the instance and you'll be in Dun Morogh. Hopefully you can find Ironforge from here :-).

This is really disgusting . . . Was leveling up fishing on my Priest the other day. Standing about waist-deep in the forlorn caverns pool, on the right side. Not really paying attention because I didn't think I had a chance in catching anything but regular fish and 'viola, up comes Old Ironjaw . . . Amazing, level 21 Priest, probably around 120 fishing skill (at the time) and I catch the bugger when I've tried for HOURS on my main (450 fishing skill) . . . Go figure!

After around 25-30 mins of fishing today I got it, Fished about 100-150 times (In a row) Rather lucky I suppose, as seeing other people farming it for over 3 hours.

And this is with the ORIGINAL Fishing Pole, aswell as NO buffs for increased fishing, meaning I.e no Fishing Baubles or w/e.

Yesterday I just so happen to go through the Cavern and saw a hunter fishing. I thought I'd give it some time. I wasn't there 5 min. and I caught it. I hate hearing about stories like mine. EDIT: Possible, but beware of the level 85 guards, they will agro on you from quite far away and with 100k health they are no pushovers anymore. Took more than 900 casts but finally got it. Still a bit unfair, considering that half of Orgrimar is now covered with pools and there is still only that little patch of water totally exposed in Ironforge.

Just got the achivement after my 85th cast into the Ironforge Pond. I guess they have increased the drop rate, or I just got luckier than the rest!
The picture for Old Ironjaw is a frog, but when you actually hold it, it's a fish--kinda weird.
Weilding Old Ironjaw provides you with +5 Stamina and also "...makes you feel tough".
Well worth the 10 minutes I invested into this achivement.

Finally Caught the Godforsaken fish!

It seems as if complaining on Wowhead actually DOES help for a few hundred casts after this post and Old ironjaw was MINE!

My cast total ended up at 2549. Now it's time to camp out in Dalaran's sewers :)

I thought my overall skill level and status would afford me some consideration but I was apparently wrong. I might as well be a level 14 gnome with some string wrapped around a half-crushed beer can, casting blindly into the side of the cavern walls.

Just got it, 866 casts. In addition to the usual three fish, I caught three 17 pound catfish, two lesser healing potions, one lesser mana potion, and one bard's belt of the boar. In the time it took me to do this, I saw about 10 allies go past, only two of which tried to gank me. One was successful, one was a lvl54 d-bag who though because I was naked he could take me. Taste my Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, gnome. Also saw one other horde flyin' around, probably trying to do the lunar festival thing.

There is a ledge on which you can sit and still cast your lure. Alliance run by without ever knowing the difference.

(50.65, 14.68) is the ledge I'm talking about. A bit ago a dwarf was fishing underneath me but was low enough level he was unable to get up here with a mount. When people run in you can just stop casting. They'll never know someone is there.

Flew into IF for the Edler for the Lunar Festival as horde. Got the Elder and died. Figured I would take a shot at Old Ironjaw while I was there so ran back. Stealthed into Forlorn Cavern.

You can stand with your back against the wall on the far side of the pool. No aggro from guards. Only took me 8 casts. Wasn't there long enough to see any players.

Hello Fellow Horde Fishermen. I went for this achievment after reading multiple(all lol) posts. This achiev is really ALOT simpler than I had 1st annticipated. I started about 6pm server & Caught this Lil Bugger roughly 2 hrs Later. All the Posts were very good and Spot On. I did fly in @85 & max'd skill of 525 + 50=575. Had to kill 4 Guards(116k)each but otherwise had NO trouble. I was spotted by a Lvl 32 alliance toon...but they quickly changed their PvP Status(Unflagged) But I also /truce & /bow..:) Wasn't there to start a ruccass:) Just the achievment. :) Here are my Findings:::

Alliance were (thankfully) friendly. They would typically emote when they noticed me while doing their fishing dailies, but didn't seem to be concerned about doing much else. (I was also careful to switch my Warlord title over to Salty).

After Old Crafty gave me a horrible time, I read over the posts and was positive that Old Ironjaw would be an easy piece of cake since most who went to do it right after got him in under 30 mins.

Well, I don't think the achievements like me, because it took me even LONGER to get Ironjaw than Crafty! The only positive to this one was that I didn't have to hie while I fished lol

Whew! This took me several hours, but not as long as some.

not to brag, but i caught this with the 5th cast during one of the IF fishing dailies. it seems that if u aim to catch Old Ironjaw, you will not be as successful as if you just go and fish with no intention of catching him. i was also shocked that i caught him because i did not expect it at all, it almost seemed unfair that i didnt have to fish for 4 hours to catch him.

I don't know why one of the first posters said this is almost impossible for horde, but I don't agree.

I'm horde, I went overnight at about half past 3 a.m. into Ironforge to fish.

The first time I died while looking for the place where I had to fish, killed by guards.

I'm in an average populated realm, and apart from stormwind most alliance cities (this included) are completely empty, even less overnight.

The second time I went there, started fishing thinking it'd have taken a long time for it (4.400 casts for the turtle just yesterday), and at the 4th cast I got it.

Seems like unluck\luck change, sometimes.

Edit: fished in forlorn cavern, of course, I'm not aware if there are other places.

I finally pulled myself together to get this one, so I put on some good music.. Make a good big bucket of coffe, find my best RP gear from bank, lure up, sit down, start fishing ..

I just got this, and I'm exhausted.

I'm an 85 rogue on Horde side, flew in to Ironforge tonight at about 10:15pm PT. I fished a total of 739 fish/items in just under four hours, non stop. The only breaks I took was to stealth if someone saw me. At 2:05am I finally caught Old Ironjaw, but I also want to point out that the server restart was at 2:00. Coincidence? Who knows. But anyway, I also stood at the far back of the cavern wall, /sleep to keep myself somewhat hidden, wore my Weather Beaten Fishing Hat and just fished non-stop.

I just fished up Old Ironjaw with my lvl 18 warlock. I use Fishing Buddy addon, and I set to easy cast (double richt-click) and auto-loot. The auto-loot was no problem, I got him right after my 500 fish achievement

I believe there is a high probability the opposing city gets a very generous bonus on the drops. It took me hundreds of drops to get the Orgrimmar one as horde, 10-20 in Ironforge.

No advantage if u use lure, or if u have max fishing level. It`s all about LUCK.
468 catches. Snapper, catfish,smallfish, etc. Spend 3, 1/2 hours. There`s no one around in Forlorn caverns at anytime, is a dead zone, but i think depends on realm. I suggest to start a level one dwarf to check area first. Use /sleep method near background wall it`s less visible. Try to fish without shoulder`s equipped and without any title in front of your name. Use autoloot.

As a druid I just flew past the guards - no dismounting, no slowing down. They shot me as I passed, but I didn't die. By the time I reached the cavern they'd all lost me. I did a /sleep and fished for quite a while with no problems. Eventually a couple of level 60ish gnomes showed up and decided to harass me. I calculated my fishing time would face a shorter interruption if I disappeared rather than killing them, so I tabbed out to my task manager, closed the game, then logged one of my alliance toons to fish the same cavern for a few till it was clear they'd all gotten bored and left. Haven't caught Old Ironjaw yet, but this strat worked pretty smooth and I will use it again when I go back.

Just finished this as horde. It honestly wasn't as difficult as people made it seem. Flew straight through the front door and to the Forlorn Cavern. As a DK I was able to stand on the water all the way at the back of the pool and fish from there. Not the best coverage but I didn't get killed once. Although it took me 1,040 catches before I got Old Ironjaw.

Posting here in a vein attempt to keep my sanity :p

This ofcourse aside from the casual lvl 20 troll, that tries to swim and jump in front of my dangling line. They usually give up after 20 seconds of no reaction :D

So far 1 horde paid a visit. It was a very short one.

Edit: Finally cought the bugger after aproximatly 2217 casts!

Tips:

Use 'Fishing Buddy', it will help u feel more productive and educated while repeating the same action over and over.(and it has an easy-cast option)

Do it in blocks of set numbers to have something to work too. I used blocks of 50 casts.

If anyone tries to annoy u, simply keep fishing without giving any reaction. They will get bored very soon.

Do not give up! Do not even think about catching the thing. Live it!

I am horde. Made it into Ironforge and once you get into the Forlorn Cavern no guards will bother you. I fished for 12 hours straigh. I caught (236) Brilliant Smallfish, (836) Longjaw Mudsnappers, (329) Bristle Catfish, (1) 22lbs Catfish, (4) 17lbs Catfish, (3) Lesser Mana Potion, (1) Schematic: EZ=thro dynamite, (1) Gypsy Tunic of the Owl; at which time, I gave up.
During that time, I only had one Alliance decide to kill me, which was around hour 11. I think that the drop rate on this is so horrible now, that it is impossible. So, yeah. >.< Annoyed!

I spent about 6 hours today trying to catch this fish. During that time, two people caught it. One of whom had 6 fishing skill and the other was there doing his daily. The drop is completely random. You could fish for seconds or days, its all luck. I feel like I've wasted minutes of my life reading about how fast some people fished it up. How many casts or how long adds no importance to the site. Its a random drop. The only thing I think I've read that was actually worth posting here was how some horde players made there way in to complete this achv in order to be helpful to others.

Got Old Ironjaw in 102 casts! (I have tried many other times, but alliance always seemed to find me after about 30 min.).

I was set on auto loot and after it said I got the achievement Old Ironjaw went straight to my bag. I didn't have to hit accept to receive him. I fished in the Forlorn Cavern, went straight to the back and did /sleep. Only saw two alliance the 45 minutes I was there. They never saw me. :) I took all items off with durability and I was fishing with Mastercraft Kalu'Ak Fishing Pole, Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat and Nat Pagle's Extremes Anglin' Boots.

I have fished for Old Ironjaw since the beginning of my fishing career. I fished for him occasionally when i was bored as an alliance, and after my faction-change it was, of course, more difficult, but the challenge even greater. I have earned the salty title, but Old Ironjaw keeps bothering me. Here is my story:

Last night at had been fishing for roughly 2.5 h. One from my guild said that he was bored, and I suggested that he could come and fish after Old Ironjaw. He said his fishing skill was very low, and did not even know that the fish existed. I said the skill did not matter. How right i turned out to be. My friend had fished for 5 min when he made a throw that earned him 2 achievements: Old Ironjaw (as you've probably guessed already) and 100 fish!

It was my saddest wow-moment ever. No hard feelings, but oh my god....

I swear I will catch that fish some day.

I got really lucky here!

I spent over five hours at Ogrimmar, trying for Old Crafty, and all I got was killed a few times because some idiots just can't let a poor Elf fish....

Anyway, I went to Ironforge, to see what might happen, and in 62 casts, there he was!

The breakdown was:

1 Lesser Healing Potion
37 Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers
16 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
7 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
1 Old Ironjaw

I admit that this is NOT the norm, because I'd been reading the posts as I sat fishing for Old Crafty.

ok been fishing in ironforge now for 8 days. over 2850 casts and still now old ironjaw. my fishing is maxed out. my fishing skill is at 650 or above. what am i doing wrong to not get this stupid fish.

finally after 960 casts. Did catch him at the right site of the pool, after I saw someone else did catch him there within half an hour.
I decided to try that spot too and had him there also within half an hour.

Ripley's believe it or not....I have Old Crafty on 6 toons. The first toon took over 2k casts. the next 5 were within the first 100 casts. The last one (which was on Sunday morning) took over 1300. I caught all of them at the right side of the pool standing about 3 inches from the right wall. If you want to check the validity of this post here are the toons.

Tarlcabot, Feelmyburn, Chingate, Ojsblade, Smegmawet and Molestro. They are all on Proudmoore.

I am the person that the previous poster saw catch Ironjaw.

Whenever I see a horde fishing in IF, I wave at them. I wont attack them, if they are fishing. They have enough issues trying to get to IF and hiding from alliance in general. I still havent gotten freaking old iron jaw. I spend about an hour a day before I just say "screw it" and go on my way. LOL

i spent a good 4-5 hours at hourly intervals searching for this guy. many, many casts...

after reading the comments here extensively, i mounted and flew to the back of the cavern and dismounted. i fell on a ledge were you can fish without actually falling in the water. i fished for about 30 minutes and finally caught the sucker. don't know if this was luck or what but i yielded nothing fishing at the "shore" of the cavern.

This achieve is all rng luck.
The only relevant information to add here is a small change in recent patch:
There is no longer a Binds-on-Pickup confirmation dialogue window for Ironjaw to screw up your fishing. It just fishes up like any other fish, only difference is that it is green quality and you get achievement spam the first time you catch him.

6500+ tries before I got him and witnessed 5 people catch him while I was trying.. <.<
