The quest name is (obviously) a nod to Steel Magnolias.

It should be noted that trying to loot the flower has a chance of spawning a Lava Burster. The monster only spawned three times out of the needed eight when I first did the quest. Also, there is a chance that Pollen de magmolia will be cast on the player when looting the flower. The fire shield does not stack and does not seem to be refreshable.

I'm pretty sure the worms are also a reference to Men in Black II, namely Jeff the Worm. Remember he had a little innocent looking flower on his head when along comes Agent T (Patrick Warburton) who starts kicking and pulling on the flower. Jeff didn't like appreciate it very much.

And if you notice, the worms have a little flower on the top of their heads, just like Jeff.

One can avoid any encounters with flower wearing worms by simply checking whether the flower they're hovering the cursor over displays the current quest progress beneath its name or not.

If it's the latter, it means there's a worm under it.

There's a useful little bug associated with this quest:

If you're phased for either The Forlorn Spire or Into The Fire, IE, you've grabbed those quests, but have not completed them, then you'll never see Lava Bursters spawn. Instead, the Magmolia that would have spawned a Lava Burster will simply not provide loot.

A friend of mine & I performed a little experiment. She didn't phase, while I did. We stacked on top of each other while out of phase... when I picked a flower that would have spawned a Lava Burster, the Lava Burster appeared in her phase!

Edits: Trying to get the handy quest links to work. They don't seem to at the moment.
