I have done this twice, once with a shaman and once with a hunter. To be honest, I don't really see a portal. Just went to where it was shown on the minimap and stodd there for a while and that was it. However it might be better to do this quest before the others just in case you lose your wisp. If that happen, abort the quest and retake it.

The 'portals' are the two little fires between which all the nasties spawn, not too far back from the place you start. The nasties will keep spawning while your wisp whirls about the portal and does its thing. Check out the Screenshots for visuals.

As soon as you accept this quest, move to a quiet spot where you can positively identify your own whisp, and put a raid marking on it. Then, when you're near a "portal" (as someone mentioned, two vertical jets of fire) you can see if your whisp is actually doing anything useful that you need to stick around for - the whisp will start circling the portal.

1) You will need to kill 8 Firekin and only 8 Firekin. Ignore anything else that comes out of the portal and they will ignore (barring aoe's) you.

2) Set up far away from any Druids of the Flame. They are like a hunter pet on aggressive.

Excellent advice from JDLKY. I had attempted this quest twice to no avail. Did exactly what JDLKY sated in his post, and it worked the first time.

$%*£!$%* Wisps! Always getting in the way of my pointer while I try to pick other quests. Do yourself a favour and pick this quest up last to avoid a great moaning and gnashing of teeth
(and for those without teeth, teeth shall be provided, oh yes)

If the Firelands is the fire plane where all the bad fire elementals were coming from during the Hyjal quests, then what are these portals? I mean... aren't the fire elementals from here? So where are they portaling from?

Just a heads up about a bug in the quest: If you pass too close to a portal that is already in the process of being closed by another wisp, your wisp will still attach itself to the portal, only you won't get credit for the other wisp closing it, and your wisp will become stuck, endlessly circling the non-existent portal. Even when the portal respawns, the wisp will not begin to close it. The only solution is to drop the quest and reclaim it.

I learned this from personal experience.

If you keep miss targeting other things, then you will need to make a macro to /target firekin.\
Also, I find that if your near a portal and your busy fighting other things, your wisp will automatically fly to the closest portal and start closing it even if you have no intention to close the portal yet.

Quite an unrewarding quest. There is no animation or effect, the portals don't disappear (not even for a few seconds), and furthermore, invaders still come out of a portal right after it is closed. That really kills the sense of accomplishment.
